Joe Marino explains why he believes the Bills run defense is struggling.
Transcript
00:00Let's talk about this Bills defense and where they stand right now.
00:03They're not very good against the run.
00:05We know that.
00:06And during the week, we had a couple callers, you know, changes they could make, players coming back.
00:11What do you think is the number one problem with what's happening in the run game defensively?
00:19Well, I think if you look at the most recent game against the Saints, it was tackling.
00:23I mean, the Saints had 165 of their 189 yards after contact.
00:32And the yards before contact on average is .7.
00:34That's really good.
00:35I mean, that was a top seven mark in the NFL this past week.
00:40The Bills were pretty decent in terms of holding at the point of attack and not getting displaced in the run game.
00:47It was, can these guys get downhill and tackle?
00:49And you saw a lot of whiffs.
00:51Terrell Bernard with three missed tackles.
00:53Taron Johnson with two.
00:55Taylor Rapp with one missed tackle.
00:57But that also doesn't count the bad angles that he took that didn't put him in position to miss the tackle.
01:01So I thought you had, it was a little bit more like the first game of the season where, you know, I thought the front was okay in terms of the line.
01:08It was just these guys filling, getting downhill and making good tackles.
01:11And it's been an issue for this defense, I think, throughout the McDermott era, but especially in the most recent game.
01:18Yeah, it's something I've heard you talk about and we've talked about before about, like, it's been a problem during the McDermott era.
01:23We know Sean McDermott's big on fundamentals.
01:25So is there an explanation for why it might continue to plague them?
01:31Well, I think there's a couple of things.
01:33Structurally, the Bills play with lighter boxes.
01:36That's not been as drastic this year, but they were back up above 50% lightbox presentation of the Saints this past week.
01:46And I think when you just, you know, you have less bodies that are committed to being closer to the line of scrimmage, you're filling from depth, right?
01:53You're taking longer angles to the football, and so it's harder to calculate those correctly.
01:57I think that's probably the leading cause.
02:00Number two would probably be some size.
02:02You know, the Bills typically go with some smaller linebackers.
02:06And you've seen that as an issue, particularly with Milano and Bernard.
02:10Both guys will miss tackles and slide off the tackles.
02:14And then, you know, they have been a little bit lean with their D-line.
02:17I wouldn't say that's the case anymore.
