00:00I think one of the biggest things that youth say to me is they've got nothing to do.
00:04You know, they cause trouble, I've got nothing to do, where else can I go?
00:08So I'm at PCSO College from the Hena and Langley Most Safe Neighbourhood Team.
00:12So I approached Sam Goodwin from the Lions Den Boxing Club around three months ago to
00:18start looking at plans of how we can divert youths at risk of criminal exploitation and
00:23antisocial behaviour into a boxing club where we can divert them from that antisocial behaviour
00:28and criminal exploitation.
00:29I'm Sam Goodwin, I'm the owner and head coach of the Lions Den Boxing Club at Hena.
00:34It's just given them something to do, something to focus on and then when they ran the other
00:38boxers, as you've seen today, when they were mixing in a group that I've previously set
00:42up that was just to get kids off of consoles and off the street and doing something and
00:45now they're progressing further and they're moving into the amateurs and they're doing
00:48better and they're seeing them kids and they're thinking, oh actually, this is better than
00:53messing around on the street, so it's given them a purpose.
00:56To cut a very long story short, as a previous naughty kid off the streets by the police into
01:02a boxing club to now doing it myself, I know it works because I've been through the whole
01:06process myself.
01:07I got into some trouble and then got a phone call and then I got offered a recommendation
01:13to come down to get me off the streets.
01:16The sessions are quite good, they're intense, like high intensity with fitness and all that,
01:22like it gets you discipline wise and all that, so I think it's good for people to get involved
01:28in this sort of stuff really.
01:29Hi, I'm Sasha, a professional boxer here at Lions Den Boxing Club in Hena.
01:34To me, a boxing club, like until I started boxing I didn't realise how community and family
01:39orientated it is.
01:40Like you walk through the gym, even if you're feeling in the worst mood going, you will come
01:44out with a smile on your face and I think that's what it's all about.
01:47My name's Paul, I'm one of the owners of Full Power Fitness which is part of Lions Den Boxing
01:52Club and this is where the sessions take place on a week to week basis with us and we're
01:58delighted to be able to host it locally.
02:00I think boxing is a great sport for kids to get involved in, particularly from a young age
02:05because it teaches, certainly respect is the main thing, discipline and obviously just
02:14giving them an outlet of aggression really and letting off some steam which normally they'd
02:21be running around the streets I guess.
02:23Like we were discussing earlier, once kids have been in there for an hour they've got
02:28their interest in doing anything else elsewhere.
02:30I think for a long time all I've seen is a lot of media attention around the negative
02:36incidents involving youths, not just around Hena but surrounding areas as well.
02:42Whenever there's a negative incident that involves these youths, it has a lot of effect on public
02:49perception and what people think about today's youths and I think getting them involved in
02:54boxing, doing something positive and being able to get that out there and display all
02:58this positive work that's happening with these youths, it shows them in a really positive light
03:03and I really want to see them look at themselves in a positive light.
03:12So we want to have to see them know what's happening in the middle of this.
03:15We're gonna have to get to see them in the middle of this.
03:17And I want to see them in some ways.
03:19So let's take a look and see if it's in an internet, get to be able to get that out there and
03:20get to see them in the middle of this.
