00:00Oh, I think we've got breaking news.
00:0295.7 The Game, breaking news.
00:09Jonathan Kaminga agreed to a contract.
00:12What? With who?
00:16Jonathan Kaminga and the Golden State Warriors are in agreement on a contract.
00:22In fact, Kaminga agrees to a two-year, $48.5 million deal to return to the Golden State Warriors.
00:33The deal has a team option in year two.
00:40So, of all of the options that were on the table, obviously Jonathan could take the qualifying offer.
00:47Jonathan had a three-year fully guaranteed deal at $54 million.
00:51Jonathan had a two-year, a one-plus-one with a team option for $48.
00:57That's what he took.
00:58He also had a three-year deal at $75 million, which was a two-year plus a team option.
01:06He selects the one-plus-one, which maximizes his first-year money.
01:15So, he gets the guaranteed money, which I think is up to about $23 million for year one.
01:20It's a team option in the following year, which means this can work as a tradable two-year deal.
01:28It can also work as an expiring contract.
01:32My very, very quick analysis on this is that Jonathan Kaminga has decided to, A, maximize his money in year one,
01:41but, B, also maximize the likelihood of getting himself out of Golden State as soon as possible in the way of the Warriors being able to move him.
01:54This is a very, very tradable contract.
01:57Right, and the Warriors ultimately put their offer up.
02:00This is from Shams saying they ultimately increased its offer by $8 million in the two-year framework to guarantee him approximately 15 more than his qualifying offer would have for this season.
02:11So, this year it's basically 23, and then for the next year it's 25-and-a-half with a team option on that.
02:19And, ultimately, if you're a team that might want to acquire Jonathan Kaminga and you like him,
02:24then you trade for him before February, and then you exercise that option for 25-and-a-half,
02:29and you hope he likes you to the point where you can then extend him and keep him.
02:34So, the Warriors gave up nothing in terms of control.
02:37They gave up a little bit more money, and they sweetened the pot for Kaminga progressively,
02:42and, ultimately, he got to the point where tomorrow is the deadline.
02:45So, he's down to 32-and-a-half hours to where they had to make a decision,
02:50and he took the money and not run.
02:53He took the money and he stayed.
02:54Yeah, no.
02:55Knowing full well that the bigger the number in year one,
02:58the likelier it is that the Warriors will trade him,
03:00either aggregate him and trade him or just trade him straight up.
03:04So, smart move and, you know, tip of the cap to his agent, Aaron Turner,
03:09because they pushed this all the way.
03:11And, whatever ill will you developed with the organization,
03:15that might go a long way toward actually getting you out of here even sooner.
03:20Yeah, although I would actually say, I mean,
03:23this is essentially kind of the deal that's been on the table for a little while.
03:28I thought that one was 45, two years and 45.
03:32I thought that's where that number was when Aaron Turner came on with Stiney and Goo
03:37about 10 days ago.
03:38I mean, maybe.
03:40You know, we're talking about a couple million bucks for the first year.
03:44I do think that the number 23, from what I understand,
03:48is a very significant one because if you go over that,
03:52if they went over the number 23 in year one,
03:55that would zap that last roster spot that they're hoping to use on Steph's brother,
04:00I think that this allows them to now.
04:03So, that's my hope is that sometime before we go to bed tonight,
04:07you'll see the rest of the contracts all become finalized.
04:10Al Horford, DeAnthony Melton,
04:11and maybe Seth Curry gets that last guaranteed roster spot for the Warriors.
04:16But we'll see.
04:17That's a question for a different day.
04:19But the bottom line here is that I'm really also happy the Warriors did not blink
04:25on this idea of a player option.
04:27I think a lot of fans, I've heard from a lot of fans who really thought,
04:32ah, what's the difference?
04:33Team option, player option, whatever.
04:36And to me, it's a big, big deal.
04:39And I'm really glad the Warriors did not blink on that part.
04:42If it's a couple more million dollars for year one, great.
04:45Do that.
04:46Who cares?
04:46But do not turn the team option into a player option
04:50that significantly lowers the value of the contract in a potential trade.
04:57Instead, what you now have, as you just pointed out,
05:00an acquiring team, let's say they do this in February,
05:04an acquiring team gets a half year to look at Jonathan Kaminga,
05:09and then they get to the end of that year.
05:11If they love him, they get him for another year at a pretty good price,
05:15$25 million.
05:17If they don't, they can opt out,
05:19and then that gets him to free agency very quickly.
05:22And even if he plays the life of the deal,
05:24this gets him to unrestricted free agency in two years,
05:27less than two years, actually, at the end of two seasons from now.
05:32And Jonathan will still be, what, 24.
05:35So it gets him to free agency at a very young rate.
05:37This makes sense, but I'm glad that cool heads prevailed.
05:44I never thought that he was going to take the qualifying offer.
05:47That would have been a disaster.
05:48That never made sense.
05:49And I'm also glad that the Warriors did not blank
05:52and turn this in to a player option.
05:55So this is probably as good of a resolution,
06:00at least on a temporary front,
06:01that we were going to get based on where we arrived.
06:05I still think there are some emotions to navigate.
06:07We'll see how that plays out.
06:09It's going to be hard for him to do.
06:10He's done it before.
06:12This is what I actually thought was going to happen.
06:14This is the best case scenario.
06:17You and I talked a couple weeks ago about
06:19what would you do if you were Kaminga,
06:21and this is what I thought that they would do and should do
06:24because it gives them that flexibility
06:26where even if the Warriors don't trade him,
06:29it's two years and you get $45 million.
06:32Turns out the offer went up to $48.5.
06:33So the Warriors threw in a little bit of a sweetener,
06:36a year two sweetener, like you're saying,
06:38because you can't get over 23
06:40because that would hard cap you and blah, blah, blah,
06:43the rest of the rules.
06:44But there was a certain number that they couldn't meet
06:46in year one, but they got to a point where,
06:48all right, we're going to sweeten you up in year two,
06:50but it's a team option.
06:51So if we do trade you,
06:53that team that acquires you is going to have to carry with you
06:56that $25.5 million in year two.
06:59So that becomes something that if you're Kaminga,
07:02you realize the reality of it,
07:04which is, all right,
07:05now it's up to Kaminga to go out and play well
07:08and play hard and do all the things that you're supposed to do
07:12and get to a point where, all right,
07:14maybe you're helping the Warriors be good again,
07:16so you stay,
07:18or you're playing as well as you can
07:20and you're doing great,
07:22and then the Warriors decide
07:23that they find somebody else they want more,
07:25and then they trade you,
07:26but the acquiring team is looking at going,
07:28man, Kaminga came out and he's averaging 15.5
07:31and he's doing all the things that,
07:33you know,
07:33his agent said that he would do
07:35if he played 30 minutes,
07:36and darn it,
07:37now he's doing it,
07:38so now we want Kaminga.
07:39So for me,
07:40this is a win-win
07:41because the Warriors maintain control in year two,
07:44and Kaminga now has a real incentive.
07:47He's paid,
07:48and he has an incentive to go out there and play great.
07:50Absolutely.
07:51Like, I will add that Shams also kind of added to this,
07:55the deal with that team option
07:56is designed for the contract to be ripped up
07:59and renegotiated next summer.
08:01Now that's kind of, I think,
08:03in the eyes of Aaron Turner,
08:04who's probably the one who's breaking this to Shams,
08:07but, you know,
08:09obviously the team can also opt out.
08:12He may not even be on the Warriors by then,
08:14but to your point,
08:15if he plays great,
08:17if he goes out and he plays great,
08:19then, yes,
08:20you can sort of rip up the deal
08:23and renegotiate.
08:25Now, I don't know if there's some sort of a wink-wink,
08:27nod-nod,
08:28like,
08:29we're going to rip this up
08:30and renegotiate it next summer
08:31because if he plays great,
08:33why wouldn't the Warriors just be like,
08:35no,
08:35we're going to pick up the team option.
08:38You know?
08:39Yeah.
08:39Then maybe there's be an extension
08:40that would be involved in it.
08:42I don't know.
08:42There's a lot of ways this can go.
08:44I still think option A
08:46is most likely
08:48that the Warriors will try to trade him
08:50come January,
08:50February,
08:51but we'll see.
08:52Now you get to go into
08:54let's gather the data
08:55because here's the other thing.
08:57I don't think he's going to get DNPs.
09:00I really don't.
09:01No.
09:01He's going to play.
09:02He's going to play.
09:03They're going to have to try to figure it out.
09:04If he gets DNPs,
09:06it's because they try to play him
09:08and it ends up not working.
09:09But those DNPs came in the highest,
09:13highest of leverage moments
09:15going into and then into the playoffs
09:18where the Warriors felt like
09:20there were no minutes
09:21to kind of mess around
09:23and test things and whatnot.
09:25And Jimmy Butler's here
09:26and Jonathan's coming back from injury
09:28and all of that stuff.
09:29That won't be the case
09:30at the start of the year.
09:32So is he going to get 30 minutes a night?
09:34I doubt it.
09:34But he's not going to get DNPs.
09:36Jonathan is back
09:38and now it is his job
09:40to get the head totally screwed on straight
09:42and then go play good basketball
09:45and go play it the way I would argue
09:48the Warriors would like him to play.
09:49And I think he will get 30 minutes a night
09:51some nights
09:52and it depends on which games
09:54and which situations
09:54and you've got an older team
09:56and you've got back-to-backs
09:57and if you're going to add Al Horford in the mix
09:59then your team got even a little bit older
10:01than what you thought your old team was before
10:04and GP2 is a guy in his 30s
10:06who's had a little bit of an injury history
10:09not a terrible one
10:10but a guy who's going to miss some games
10:11so there are minutes for Kaminga
10:13between now and January, February
10:16and the Warriors do have an ability
10:18to trade him before the deadline
10:20long before the deadline
10:21if they see fit
10:22and they find something
10:23that is going to work for them
10:25but this for me is a win-win
10:27it's the kind of contract
10:29that I thought would have been
10:30the ultimate way to resolve it
10:32because the team does not give up control
10:34and it's a little bit of a Jordan Poole deal
10:36where yeah, you know
10:37the number next year
10:39is the number next year
10:40we may never even see that
10:42what the Warriors got
10:43is a tradable player
10:45with a tradable salary
10:46that can now be used
10:49in January or February
10:50to bring in a player
10:51that they like more than Jonathan Kaminga
10:53I will agree with you
10:54that it's a win-win
10:55based on where we arrived
10:58and what was currently available
11:00I do think that there were better ways
11:02for this summer to go
11:03for the Golden State Warriors
11:04and for Jonathan
11:05for that matter
11:06this was one hell of a ride
11:09and believe you me
11:10not everybody in the organization
11:12and probably Jonathan too
11:13and his agent
11:14were not thrilled
11:16about this experience
11:17and Draymond Green
11:18has talked a lot about this
11:19these things are hard
11:20these players are hardwired
11:22to also get over it
11:23and so Jonathan's
11:25going to have to do that
11:26but one more tweet from Shams
11:27that I would like to now pass along
11:29to everybody
11:30and by the way
11:30with this breaking news
11:32that obviously we've all been waiting for
11:34for months and months
11:35it's here
11:36and we're here
11:37therefore we're here
11:38for you
11:39888-957-9570
11:42is the number
11:42we will take your calls
11:44right now
11:44and throughout the afternoon
11:46on your reaction
11:47to what the final answer is
11:50on this Golden State Warriors
11:52Jonathan Kaminga puzzle
11:53once again
11:55what has happened
11:56is Kaminga has agreed
11:57to a two year
11:5948.5 million dollar contract
12:01year one
12:03is the only guaranteed year
12:0423 million dollars
12:06year two
12:07is a team
12:08a Warriors option
12:09on year two
12:11that in theory
12:12gets Jonathan
12:13to free agency
12:14a little bit quicker
12:15but also add this in
12:17Shams just tweeted it
12:18a minute ago
12:19Kaminga chose
12:20this two year deal
12:21over the three year deal
12:23so he can maintain
12:24a higher level
12:25of control
12:26over his immediate future
12:28the Warriors
12:29never wavered
12:31on team option
12:32frameworks
12:32now
12:33both sides
12:35understand
12:36the likelihood
12:37of exploring
12:39trades
12:39when Kaminga
12:40is eligible
12:41in January
12:43so I also
12:44want to add in
12:45this is not
12:47kumbaya
12:48it's not
12:49this was never
12:51a perfect situation
12:52it obviously
12:53has been dragged
12:55on and on
12:55to the level
12:56of high frustration
12:57on both sides
12:58and this agreement
13:00does not mean
13:01in my estimation
13:03that everybody
13:04is like
13:04sweet
13:05gather round
13:06the campfire
13:07let's make s'mores
13:09we ride together
13:10this is still
13:11very much
13:12a temporary
13:13relationship
13:15in the eyes
13:15of both sides
13:16at least in all
13:17likelihood
13:18that's my guess
13:19and this is
13:20as tradable
13:20of a contract
13:21as he could
13:22have signed
13:22and so
13:23there's a lot
13:24of games
13:25to happen
13:25and there's
13:26a lot
13:26of things
13:26to unfold
13:27so this could
13:28go a lot
13:28of directions
13:29but I would
13:30still think
13:31that right now
13:32it's likely
13:32that Kaminga's
13:34time in
13:35Golden State
13:35has six months
13:36left
13:36perhaps
13:37yeah
13:38and actually
13:38less than that
13:39if you want
13:40to talk about
13:41him being eligible
13:41to be dealt
13:42in January
13:42it might be
13:43three
13:43might be
13:44October
13:45November
13:46December
13:46and then he
13:47could be on
13:47the move
13:48in January
13:48ahead of the
13:49February deadline
13:49but it's
13:50interesting
13:51about a couple
13:52things
13:53one
13:53if you look
13:54around the league
13:55the association
13:55and you look
13:56at players
13:57who make
13:57about 23 million
13:59there are some
14:00veterans
14:00there are some
14:01expirings
14:02there are some
14:02pieces that might
14:03fit better than
14:04Kaminga
14:04and the other
14:05part of it is
14:06and I've always
14:06taken Steve Kerr
14:07at his word
14:08about Kaminga
14:09Jimmy Butler
14:10and the DNPs
14:11they really didn't
14:12have a chance
14:13to practice it
14:14work it out
14:15figure out
14:16what might work
14:17now you've got
14:18a game on
14:18Sunday
14:19a preseason
14:20game
14:20I don't know
14:21if he'll be
14:21ready to go
14:22against the
14:22Lakers
14:22it doesn't
14:23really matter
14:23you've got
14:24about three
14:24weeks of
14:25run up
14:26until the
14:27start of
14:27the regular
14:27year
14:28you've got
14:28some time
14:29to figure
14:29out how
14:30this might
14:31actually be
14:31better than
14:32what it was
14:32in March
14:33and April
14:34because when
14:34he came
14:35back and
14:36Jimmy was
14:36here they
14:37didn't have
14:37the practice
14:38time to
14:38really figure
14:39out how
14:40it might
14:40work
14:41now you
14:41can call
14:41it a cop
14:42out whatever
14:42you want
14:43to call
14:43it I
14:43take them
14:44at their
14:44word
14:45and also
14:45now
14:46coming as
14:47a warrior
14:47he's a warrior
14:48until he's
14:49not a warrior
14:49and while
14:50he's a warrior
14:50he needs
14:51to play
14:52because he's
14:53a good player
14:54and he's
14:55young and as
14:56his agent
14:56said he's
14:57a guy who
14:58can eat
14:58minutes and
14:59you're going
14:59to need
14:59people to
15:00play minutes
15:00on an
15:01older team
15:01yeah I
15:02would suggest
15:03and I know
15:03that Aaron
15:04Turner would
15:04walk this
15:05back if he
15:05could I
15:07would like
15:07go rebound
15:08no matter
15:09how many
15:09minutes you
15:09get I
15:10wouldn't wait
15:11for 28th
15:12minute to be
15:12like now I'm
15:13on a
15:13you know
15:13what I mean
15:13like that
15:14was a bad
15:15statement
15:15he stated
15:16it the wrong
15:16way
15:16completely
15:17yes I
15:17don't know
15:18if he fully
15:18meant it
15:19that way
15:19but that's
15:20how it
15:20absolutely
15:21was said
15:22and and
15:23so to
15:24me yes
15:25Jonathan
15:26is going
15:26to play
15:27here's kind
15:28of what I'm
15:29happy about
15:29in this
15:29moment I
15:30still have
15:31questions that
15:32need to be
15:32answered and
15:33they will
15:33when the
15:33season starts
15:34there's two
15:35things I
15:36want to
15:36point out
15:36that I'm
15:37happy about
15:38today one
15:39on each
15:40side I've
15:41already sort
15:41of stated
15:42the warrior
15:42one
15:43the warriors
15:44unequivocally
15:45absolutely
15:45should not
15:46blink on the
15:47team option
15:48framework and
15:49they didn't
15:49so for me
15:50good job
15:51warriors there
15:52again this was
15:53not a perfect
15:54situation there
15:55wasn't a perfect
15:55answer but this
15:56is about as good
15:57of what they
15:58could have gotten
15:58to and as
15:59for Jonathan
16:00I think that
16:02Jonathan I
16:03don't think his
16:04agent was great
16:05but Jonathan in
16:08the end took a
16:10deal the day
16:11before we got
16:12to the deadline
16:13and all of
16:14the he did
16:15not take the
16:16qualifying offer
16:17he in theory I
16:19think left room
16:20for Seth Curry to
16:21join the team
16:22and now he will
16:24be here for the
16:26start of training
16:27camp this is yet
16:28another brick on
16:29the wall and it's
16:31a good one by the
16:31way this is a
16:33brick on the wall
16:33of no matter how
16:35frustrating and
16:36annoying all of
16:37this has been
16:38between Kaminga
16:39and the Warriors
16:40Jonathan has
16:41never publicly
16:43caused a huge
16:44fuss that's right
16:45and he deserves a
16:47lot of credit for
16:48that and he just
16:49did it again
16:49because honestly I
16:51know there was a
16:52couple million
16:53sweetener in there
16:54but Jonathan did
16:56not get what he
16:56wanted he did not
16:58they threatened the
16:59qualifying offer
17:00the bluff got
17:01called and it was
17:03right to call the
17:03bluff they were
17:04not going to take
17:05the QO they
17:06demanded a player
17:07option they
17:08didn't get it
17:09sometimes you
17:10don't get what
17:11you want in a
17:12contract yeah he
17:13took it he took
17:14it on time he
17:16made room for
17:17teammates he's
17:18going to show up
17:19the next question
17:19is are you now
17:21focused and you're
17:23able to
17:23compartmentalize and
17:25play good
17:26basketball that's
17:27that's a question
17:27he would I would
17:28guess so too and
17:29the conversation is
17:30now ramped up
17:31because the news
17:32is breaking
17:32coming of signs
17:33for two years
17:34and 48 and a
17:35half million
17:3523 million year
17:37one guaranteed
17:3825 and a half
17:39the second year
17:40on a team option
17:41obviously not
17:42guaranteed because
17:43the team can give
17:44him a Ariana
17:45Grande and say
17:46thank you next
17:47and so he gets
17:4823 million this
17:49year instead of
17:507.9 and if the
17:52Warriors don't want
17:53him around he
17:54gets his freedom
17:55after a year and
17:56if they do want
17:56him around well
17:57now it becomes a
17:58two-year 48 and a
17:59half million dollar
18:00deal or the
18:01Warriors can trade
18:01him in January
18:02so I kind of
18:04think that
18:04Kaminga he didn't
18:05get what he
18:06wanted because what
18:07he wanted was what
18:08Jalen Green got
18:09which is three years
18:10and 105 and that
18:11wasn't happening so
18:12this is better than
18:13what he was going to
18:14settle for and the
18:16threat of the
18:16qualifying offer was
18:17just that you're
18:18right a threat so
18:19instead of 7.9 and
18:21everyone's miserable
18:22now he gets 23
18:23million and everyone's
18:25not miserable it might
18:26be a little bit
18:27awkward and the
18:29awkward thing will
18:30be as Guru likes to
18:31say the rat on the
18:32table which is
18:32they're going to be
18:33trying to trade him
18:34and he's okay with
18:35it yeah that's going
18:36to be the rat on the
18:37table brought to you
18:38by Adko I look at
18:39it as kind of a
18:39staircase of what he
18:41of not getting what
18:43he wanted like you
18:43bring up he wanted
18:44what Jalen Green got
18:45okay that's step one
18:47all right if you can't
18:48have that what do you
18:49want next well I want
18:50to be a son or a king
18:51all right you don't get
18:53that you don't get
18:53that either okay
18:54what's next well then
18:55I want a player option
18:56right now I'm sorry
18:57I'm not getting that
18:58either no okay well
18:59then you got this and
19:01again this is not the
19:02bottom of the staircase
19:03no it certainly is in
19:05the top though I'll give
19:05you that I'm trying to
19:07give him credit here
19:08because he did not get
19:09what he wanted he did
19:11not like I mean Aaron
19:12Turner sat here on
19:14these airwaves and they
19:15were like we're not
19:16doing team option and
19:18here we are a day
19:19before the deadline and
19:20yes you are yes you
19:22are and but but I I
19:24want Jonathan to get
19:26credit for that because
19:27my concern all along was
19:30at what point are we
19:32now the interests are so
19:34competing that you are
19:37using this situation to
19:38basically get in the way
19:39of warrior basketball and
19:41he didn't do that there's
19:42one more round to hit which
19:44is now you got to go play
19:45well right focus don't get
19:47into sideline spats with
19:48Kerr or whatever but like
19:50don't let it get in the way
19:52of the season and he
19:53didn't and he took a deal
19:55that he's probably not
19:56thrilled with he gets
19:5723 million ways to get
20:00over it but he's probably
20:01not thrilled with it but
20:02he's now a highly paid
20:04man and there is some
20:06sort of get out of town
20:08card that's tucked in
20:10there seemingly sooner
20:11rather than later yeah I
20:13know that's good I don't
20:14think that he's necessarily
20:15that disappointed because
20:16it's not what they said
20:17they wanted of course but
20:19you always can say what
20:20you want and they can say
20:21what you're going to get
20:22and if you know the truth
20:23like you say in
20:24negotiations and a good
20:26negotiation always lands
20:27in the middle and that's
20:28where this is and if
20:29you're Kaminga worst case
20:31you play for 23 you don't
20:33get traded and they turn
20:34down your option and now
20:35you're a free agent best
20:37case you play for 23 you
20:38get dealt somewhere where
20:39you can cook they pick up
20:41your option now you get
20:4348 and a half and you get
20:44to play somewhere where you
20:45actually get to cook and do
20:46what you want 888-957-9570
20:49Kaminga and the Warriors
20:51have a deal it's a one
20:52plus one two-year deal team
20:55option on year two 48 and a
20:57half million dollar deal the
20:59Warriors and Kaminga
21:00experience at long last at
21:04least this version of it is
21:06over
21:06интересно
21:07to explore if you live in the
21:09CH through or just a couple
21:12you can wish you to
21:14learn a lot of voices you
21:15got there
21:17so
21:17we
21:19go
21:20to
