00:01This time on Outback Truckers.
00:03We've just come out of the Tanamai Desert.
00:05We're hauling 140 tonne right now.
00:08What?
00:09We just had a massive bang, dude.
00:12We really didn't need this right now.
00:14That's the absolute bullshit bottom line of being a sole operator.
00:19You know, turning around, no backing down the hill.
00:21The only one way we're going, it's up.
00:25Got word there's an eight metre wide load coming towards us.
00:28The worst case scenario is he could end up rolling at it.
00:31We're going up a virtual.
00:34Got some bull dusty stuff here.
00:37What the ?
00:38Just lost all my power.
00:41I'm not sure what's going on.
00:43Just lost all my power for some reason.
00:53We've got a one lane bridge coming up here.
00:55Look out, buddy.
00:56Southbound road train, one lane bridge.
00:58Southbound road train, one lane bridge.
01:01Southbound road train, one lane bridge.
01:04Southbound road train, one lane bridge, two mile creek.
01:07Fucking hell, eh?
01:09Southbound road train.
01:10You got your CB on there, Blue Kenny?
01:23Yep.
01:24Yeah, I might have done a bit for the channel, bruh.
01:27That's why you call it.
01:28That's why you call it one lane bridges in the top end can be quite a dangerous thing for road trains
01:34So he wasn't on Channel 40 then and there's him jamming his anchors on the last second
01:40Car recyclers Mike Elliott and his 17 year old son Vinnie have narrowly avoided a deadly collision in Australia's far north
01:50We're hauling 140 ton right now
01:52We've got a hundred and eight motors on board, and we've got ten other cars
02:00Oh, yo l-money a day six later lovely. Let's chop it
02:07Mike and Vinnie have spent the last ten days
02:10Salvaging wrecked cars in the Tanami desert to sell for parts on the lucrative export market
02:17Pretty happy with the haul because there's about 80 grams worth of stock on board
02:20We're about 50 k's before the turnoff to Derby and the Savannah way
02:27So we're heading towards Broom. We'll be taking our left up here
02:30And we should be home in about two days
02:34After leaving the tiny community of Billaluna one day ago
02:38They've made it back to the highway and have just passed through the narrow single lane bridges around Fitzroy crossing
02:45They still have over two thousand five hundred kilometers of hard driving ahead of them to get back to Perth
02:53Things are looking good. Doesn't seem to be any dramas with the truck today other than the uncomfortable fact there's no air con
02:59It's probably 40 to 43 degrees today
03:02That's outside so
03:04No air con at the moment. We've just got windows down
03:08It's probably 50 to 55 degrees in the cab
03:11Corking
03:14The extreme heat can take its toll both on owner operators like Mike and the trucks they drive
03:22Just up here. I blew a $60,000 engine in a road stop and
03:27Every time I pass that stop up here. It just bites me just absolutely bites me took me two years before I could get back on the horse
03:34You know, that's an absolute that is such a hard thing to weather man, you know, not unless you've done that yourself
03:42You know, could could you understand the pain and the anguish that you and your family have got to go through in order to overcome something like that
03:53Since we started every time we ever made a profit we put the money back into the business
03:58We've been renting trailers all year these trailers on this month just cost me ten grand
04:03So smart business boobies if we make a bit of money for some trailers
04:12We just had a massive bang dude massive massive
04:24In this part there is eggs playing for me very eagerly
04:29Made it yeah
04:31Would have been here earlier, but there was a line up at the coffee shop. Yeah ready for tonight. Yeah ready as I'll ever be
04:38But you go load this big thing a lot. Yeah
04:41Heavy hauling specialists Fardil Dean and younger brother Farhan Dean have a monstrous challenge ahead of them
04:50We're about to go load a Komatsu 930 dump truck nine meters wide six and a half meters high grossing about
04:56Two hundred and ten time it is one of the biggest dump trucks around will be over
05:02Thirty-five meters long and yeah, we're actually gonna have a second truck pushing us cuz that heavy
05:07The Titanic
05:09210 tonne load requires two trucks to be safely transported
05:13The second truck known as a block truck is connected with a metal rod to add more power and
05:21Braking capacity I was get you to hook on the back
05:24Like Matsu push me around and then once we get there you know
05:28Put you on front and you can pull me up and I'll just sit back and do nothing like always
05:32I've got in the trucking cuz it's it's in my blood. I was born into it. So my dad started his business 24 years ago now
05:43This is my truck. It's a 2020 model black super owner
05:47Hundred year anniversary for Mac. It's got a custom-made king bar
05:52Custom paint they were running the super chrome rims. They got the gangster dog there
05:57Al Capone on the back counting a stash. It's looking cool
06:01This is a
06:032013 Mac Titan Southern Cross. It's a limited edition truck. They've been made ten of them
06:07It's got the bigger sleeper big bunk. It's always a big rivalry between me and my brother
06:12Who's got the bigger truck and you know who drives better who can get gears better who's faster who's you know
06:18But yeah, it's always come out on top anyway. Yeah, you think it's a better, but this thing is 240 ton rated at 850 horsepower
06:27I've definitely got the better truck. This one's obviously better
06:31We will be leaving Mackay at 10 o'clock tonight and we'll have three pilots two police cars
06:40Driving in convoy the brothers will maneuver the mega load from Mackay through the mountainous winding roads of the Great Dividing Range
06:49Two hundred and twenty-one kilometres to a mine at Moranbaugh
07:02About to go hook the rock truck up and then when it sets out
07:05We've got this little window from ten to five o'clock to move this big machine
07:13Their oversized permit gives them just seven hours to complete the mission or face being forced to stop on the side of the road until the following night
07:22Stripping any profit out of the job
07:25That's thousands and thousands of dollars and fleece and permits and yeah, we just don't want that to happen
07:31Righto, we're locked in, eh?
07:33Alright, let's roll
07:34Yep, cool on time, good to go
07:43Righto, fine, just roll with me for nearly
07:53Okay
07:54My heart's doing good
07:56He's there when I needed me
07:57Doing on these tolls, so that's good
07:59This will be our next challenge here
08:01We're going to cross over onto the wrong side of the road
08:04See they've laid the traffic lights down for us
08:08Okay, you got eyes on the overhead?
08:12Yeah, mate, you're looking good at this day, Jay, on the left
08:20These lights want it down, it'll make life a lot harder
08:25We just wouldn't be getting through there as easy as we did
08:29But now that we've come through Bakers Creek and all the places out of Mackay
08:33We're going to turn right onto Hunter Bush Road now
08:35And we'll begin with, um, lifting all the power lines
08:41Right, the ADFR, I think we've got the first wide area
08:45Hey, that would be very bad if we were down at one of the power lines
08:48It'll leave a lot of people without power
08:51Yeah, we're just going to take it nice and steady
08:53Go under until we get the all clear and make sure that, you know, we didn't touch it
08:58Any delays put the brothers at risk of missing their deadline
09:02But high voltage power lines demand respect
09:06It could weld the machine to the trailer, blow out all your tyres
09:12If you've got that much of high voltage electricity running through everything, yeah
09:19Wouldn't be a pretty sight, that's for sure
09:21Well, you've got to make sure you've got plenty of oil in there
09:34That's the mechanic, go right through all the vehicles
09:36So if there's any problems, it's his fault
09:38Hey Brendan, Brendan's the mechanic
09:49Won't start mate
09:51What's going on?
09:52Got a flat battery
09:54Saying they're green
09:56What's going on there?
09:59Now there's not much wrong with it because they're still saying that they're green
10:01So
10:06You've got to turn the key properly
10:10Trucking owner operator and entrepreneur Luke Major has an urgent job that can't be delayed
10:20Even for family
10:22Thank you, normally I'm not home for the daughter's birthday but happy birthday
10:27We'll make the most of it either side
10:34Stay in a couple of weeks
10:41We run a concrete gaffold business and we also run an events business
10:45Which is why we're going up to the Birdsville to set up for the Birdsville races
10:50It's one of Luke's biggest contracts
10:54Setting up the Birdsville races
10:57First run almost 150 years ago in 1882
11:02The races are an iconic outback event
11:05Bringing a massive crowd to the tiny community of Birdsville
11:10I live in Birdsville, I've been here forever
11:13People come from par and wide to take part in the Birdsville races
11:17We're a community that you know as a hundred people it's really wonderful to have these events
11:23Because we've had up to seven, eight thousand people here
11:26It's a massive massive cash injection for the for the town
11:30Without that they probably wouldn't be able to survive
11:36Luke's family business is critical to the success of this unique event
11:41We're doing the whole track set up we turn the track from the desert into the Birdsville race track
11:48We've got all the electrical gear we've got some staging
11:53Then we've got the tent for the stage to go in and then on the trailer we've got the main scaffold tower to film the horses coming down the main straight
12:01Without the gear we've got
12:03Without the gear we've got you don't have a show
12:09In the quickest way to Birdsville is up the Birdsville track
12:11We've got 650 kilometres of sealed road and then we'll have a bit over 500 of dirt to get up to Birdsville
12:20From his base in Port Lincoln, South Australia, Luke must hustle along the highway
12:26Making his way through the Flinders Ranges to his overnight stop at Maree
12:30From there he must take on the infamous unpaved and unpredictable Birdsville track for over 500 kilometres to reach his destination
12:43My worst fear is water on the track
12:48Creek crossings they can get a bit bony
12:51You could get a run of rain go through there and then you end up with a really slippery muddy mess
12:57It could be a walk in the park or it could be a bloody nightmare
13:05We're gonna go past the turn off to Darwin and we're gonna head up towards the Flinders Ranges
13:12Known to be one of the oldest mountain ranges in the world
13:16I think they date back 600 million years
13:24We've got the boys following us up in the utes
13:27We need a lot of guys up there because there's a fair bit of work to do
13:30Cubby there Dammit
13:33I travel along nicely
13:37Oh I just saw a wall bar for the tent just started to walk out of the back
13:43You always get a bit of movement with scaffold
13:45Steel on steel it's gonna move
13:48It's when they pack the stillage there's been a loose bar and as we're driving along it's vibrating out to the front
13:54Ryan's just put a zip tie in there so it doesn't drive into the back of the truck here
13:59I think we should be right now
14:01About an hour out from Maree
14:09Camp there tonight
14:09Bit of a race against time the sun's getting pretty low
14:12So we want to get in there before the wildlife get out on the road
14:17We've got some wildlife here up on the left
14:20Maybe
14:20It's a good indication that as soon as that sun goes down
14:27We're probably going to have a bit of wildlife to contend with
14:29We'll be racing against the sun
14:39And here we are
14:41We'll just turn onto the Birdsville track quickly and have a look at the sign there
14:45It gives us a bit of an idea of track conditions
14:47That sign is supposed to tell me that it's open or closed
14:59At the moment it's telling me that the sign's failed
15:03Luke's only chance of making it to his job on time is by driving the Birdsville track
15:09When things go wrong, they go wrong
15:12We just had a massive bang dude massive massive bang
15:23Something's just gone wrong. Let's go check that shit out
15:29Holy shit
15:32Wow that's violent
15:34Looks like another $270 tire down the drain
15:37Mike Elliott and son Vinny have hit expensive trouble on the road
15:42So we've had a tire delaminate
15:45Pretty violently too dad reckons he saw a decent explosion
15:50Is everything okay? No damage to the trailer?
15:53Really didn't need this right now
15:55Sun setting it's been a long day
15:57Not a good location to be changing a tire
15:59The blowout is yet another cost
16:02Eating into any profit they might make from the recycled car parts
16:06On their triple road train
16:08We're only a small business
16:10You've got to know what your bottom line is
16:12You know we've had blowouts already
16:15Unexpected bills
16:16That's the absolute bullshit bottom line
16:18Of being a sole operator
16:21I'm renting this equipment
16:22I don't want to damage it
16:23You know I don't want to just keep driving
16:24And then you know have parts of that delaminated tire
16:27Start picking up and damaging the trailer
16:30Any further financial setbacks
16:32Will put their dream of buying their own trailers at risk
16:36We've been renting trailers for a few years now
16:37So hopefully we could possibly be looking at buying our own trailers
16:42Fingers crossed that we're going to get a clean run out of here
16:46Dude that was savage
16:47Hey look at this
17:02What's that?
17:02Kiwana?
17:03Look at that Kiwana
17:05Hey deadly
17:07Still got an issue with the air conditioning
17:15It's got to be at least 43 44 outside the middle of the day
17:19What do you reckon the cab temperature is right now?
17:21I don't know I'd say 50 50 degrees
17:24So we've just come out of the Tanamai desert
17:27We've finally hit the coast
17:29So it's the best opportunity now to make some memories with my boy
17:38If you're travelling eight, nine hundred thousand kilometres a day
17:42You know you want to be breaking it up with a bit of you know a bit of lunch a bit of a swim different locations
17:47We're not on the clock like a lot of transport companies
17:49So for us you know an extra hour and a half late no drama mate
17:54Tyre's got a break in the middle of the heat of the day
17:56Engine got a break in the middle of the heat of the day
17:58So you know we'll grab a feed jump back on the road and um keep punching on
18:02And we're hoping for just nice smooth travelling make sure we don't do any damage to the truck make sure we don't do any damage to the trailers
18:15Keep those tyres in nice good condition and just keep pushing on
18:21Uh-oh we got drama there's bulls all over the road
18:32We'll come into our first wire lift down here
18:38You can see how I'm out on the ground there
18:50Now we'll just crawl along here till Matty comes past me and gets to the next wire and lifts it up
18:57One down 19 to go
19:04Brothers Fardil and Farhan are weaving their extremely conductive 210 tonne six and a half meter high steel load
19:13Under deadly high voltage wires hanging as low as 5.6 meters
19:19It's got his stick on the ball bar set to height so as it comes anywhere post the touching or does touch
19:28That's how that gives him a good indication of um where he needs to lift some wires
19:32So far it's taken us an hour to do 17 by 5k
19:52It's all clear are we?
19:53Yeah mate Matty's about to take off now aye
19:55They're racing the clock to complete their delivery before their permit runs out or face a costly wait until the following night
20:07So we're going to be on site at the mine gates by five if not then we pull up and yeah we can't go anywhere
20:15We've still got each race to tackle so that that's another big hurdle in our way tonight once we get up there
20:21I'd like to say it's through we could be smooth sailing but it's trucking anything can happen
20:28Ahead lies a colossal challenge the road rises sharply cutting its way between the mountainous peaks of the eaton range
20:39We're just at the bottom of the eaton range down
20:41We'll unhook far from the back of the trailer and hook him onto the front of the truck so he can pull me up the range
20:46We'll just go to this side first
20:59Great
21:01Alright eh? We're all hooked up now let's um tackle the eaton range
21:05You already have some manual front?
21:13Yeah.
21:14The Harlow being my eyes and ears in the front, so he'll pick the line.
21:20Pretty much he'll have the whole load. I just gotta follow him.
21:23It's good when you've got someone you can trust, and I trust him 100%.
21:26We've got to make sure we are both on the same sort of gear, same pace.
21:30One's not pushing harder than the other, both kind of keeping it even.
21:35Let's go third gear. We're calling them. See how it goes, eh?
21:39Right, I know.
21:46There's a lot of factors that could go wrong.
21:49We could have one of the trucks play up and, you know,
21:54miss a gear or a bit of diesel or an oil spill on the road
21:59that could make us lose traction and come to a stop.
22:05I've been out turning around now, back and down the hill.
22:09The only one way we're going, it's up.
22:18Just on the street, could it be enough?
22:20What's that?
22:21In here.
22:22Oh, yeah.
22:23Oh, yeah.
22:24Alright.
22:25It's time to hit the road.
22:30Have a look at the weather forecast and we haven't got any wind
22:32and we don't want it too hot.
22:34Otherwise, we'll run the risk of vehicles overheating.
22:38Luke Major is taking a gamble on more than just the weather.
22:42The status sign for the unforgiving Birdsville track is out of order.
22:47He doesn't even know if the road is open.
22:50We'll make our way down the track and we'll have a look.
22:53That's all we can do.
22:56There'll be pretty rough patches, I'd say.
22:59It just means we've got to proceed with caution.
23:02Supplying the Birdsville races with critical infrastructure
23:06is a massive job for Luke's family business.
23:09The Birdsville races each year, it's two weeks away from home
23:12but it's also two weeks of work.
23:14But his biggest obstacle is the route in, the Birdsville track.
23:20The Birdsville track is what it is.
23:22Rocks and potholes and big hard ruts
23:25and then you could get corrugations.
23:32Corrugations are a series of small bumps
23:35which shake the shit out of everything.
23:37It can damage the equipment that we bring up here.
23:40Wreck bearings.
23:41You do a bearing or something,
23:43well then that's a couple of hours on the side of the road.
23:53Driving over all these corrugations
23:56and, you know, just constantly watching the road.
23:59It really takes it out of you.
24:01We're still only 150 kilometres up the track.
24:04Still got 350 to go
24:06and who knows what that track's like.
24:08Luke's keeping an eagle eye on the track and also the clock.
24:15His business relies on him getting in and out of Birdsville on time.
24:19We've got a bit riding on it.
24:23If something goes wrong the time slips away pretty quick
24:26and that puts me back for the next job.
24:30Take every kilometre as it comes
24:33and hopefully we don't have any dramas.
24:35I don't have any dramas.
24:41Oh, look the down on there.
24:48Just lost all my power.
24:55I just lost all my power for some reason.
24:57Uh-oh.
25:07We've got drama.
25:09Bulls all over the road.
25:15Wow!
25:17Whoo!
25:19It's all station properties.
25:21Unfenced land.
25:23Wild scrub bulls just feeding on the grass.
25:24One just shot straight across the road.
25:27So we just jammed on the anchors.
25:29You don't want to hit a ball.
25:31Tear an axle out.
25:32Blow a wheel off.
25:33Rip all your fuel tanks off.
25:35You hit a ball, that's game over.
25:37Mike and Vinnie have survived a close encounter
25:40on the Great Northern Highway.
25:42Keeping their ambition of building their business alive.
25:45These trailers just cost me ten grand to rent someone else's skier.
25:49Best case scenario, we'd probably be able to buy our own trailers this year.
25:53But I tell you what, one thing goes wrong.
25:55You hit a ball, you can be two months back in a hole.
25:59After travelling over 1,000 brutally hot kilometres,
26:04they're now starting their third day of driving,
26:09entering the rugged ranges and gorges of the Pilbara.
26:12We're about to hit one of the biggest climbs we've got over the whole journey.
26:17It's about a ten kilometre climb.
26:19And the problem with that is we're pulling 130, 140 tonne.
26:23You know, we're right on our max weight limit.
26:26We're going to pull up, break down the triple.
26:29On the first run, we're just going to be taking the front trailer and this dolly.
26:33Our second trip, we'll take the last two trailers in as a double.
26:37Oh, mate, effortless with one trailer.
26:41It's really the only hill that I worry about the whole time.
26:46Because we're going to get on it now, give it some power,
26:49try and get as max speed as we can.
26:52So we're now starting the ascent.
26:56OK.
26:58We're already coming down through the gears.
27:00Through on the first bit.
27:12We're now going to set down the single trailer.
27:19OK.
27:21Let's go and do it all over again.
27:22The truck's about to go through twice as much stress
27:33as what it did the first time going up.
27:39We're going to try and be hitting the base of that hill
27:42at around 80, 90 k's an hour.
27:45This is the start, and this is a problem already because we weren't able to get the speed up.
27:54I couldn't even get 80 k's an hour before the start, so we're already working our way down to the bottom of the box.
28:01So things are going to get pretty nasty.
28:04There's our second change down, so we're now one gear off the bottom.
28:09Worst comes to worst, run them up as single trailers.
28:15Stopping to unhook a trailer would leave one lane of the highway blocked,
28:20causing chaos for the hundreds of iron ore trucks that use the road each day.
28:25And that's us splitting to the bottom of the box now.
28:31Sitting on three to five k's an hour, absolutely redlining on the taco.
28:36The incline is too steep.
28:40This is bad.
28:48What revs are you doing?
28:50I'm doing about 1,600.
28:54It's a half throttle, is it?
28:57Just about, yeah.
28:59Should be right with that.
29:01Fadil and Fahan are fighting to get their multi-million dollar, 210 tonne load to the top of Eton Range.
29:10A job that requires them to work with precise coordination.
29:14I'll ask Fahan what revs he's doing, what gear he's in.
29:18He'll let me know and then I'll either match him or if I'm ready to go down a gear,
29:24I'll say to Fahan, have you got enough revs to hold me as I go down?
29:28So both trucks aren't changing gears at the same time.
29:29So that way, if Fahan takes all the weight while I do a gear change, then I'll take all the weight while he does a gear change.
29:38Do a bit on there.
29:40Yeah, all good, yeah.
29:41I'm doing that hard down here.
29:42You know, both trucks doing what they're supposed to be doing.
29:47We've got the same revs, same gear, so now it's just a matter of just keeping that gear, keeping those revs at the same pace and climbing our way to the top.
29:57The brothers are not only responsible for transporting the enormous weight of their payload, the reputation of their company, owned by their father, Musi, also rides on their shoulders.
30:12My dad's always taught us pretty much everything we know.
30:16And he's always taught us, you know, go on up a hill, pick your gear, stay in it, don't try to be a hero and change gears halfway up.
30:22And yeah, we've been taught from dad, and yeah, he's got years and years of experience on us, so who else better than he, just dead him.
30:33All good on the left so far, mate.
30:35All right, stop, go.
30:38We'll go get Fahan hooked up on the back.
30:42F1!
30:47F1, off you go.
30:53A little bit more, a little bit more, a little bit more, whoop.
30:56Up there.
30:57Yeah, good to go.
31:01We have an eight metre leaving Cabal Ridge at 2am.
31:08We just got word on the UHF that there's an eight metre wide load coming towards us.
31:14So that should make things a bit interesting, considering we're eight and a half and they're eight metres.
31:19Worst case scenario is I move over too much, the team moves over too much and, you know, you can see the camber off the side of the roads, they fall off like that.
31:30But you could end up rolling it if you go too far.
31:32I just saw me, pal, and I'm not sure what's going on.
31:46I'll just pull up here and we'll have a look.
31:48Yeah, it's just the brakes have come on for some reason.
32:01One's come off there.
32:03Screwdriver.
32:04Luke Major has come to an unexpected halt 250 kilometres from the nearest town in one of Australia's harshest landscapes, the Simpson Desert.
32:16That there runs to a main valve, which operates the brakes.
32:22And these type of brakes, they're called a maxi-brake.
32:25So when they don't have air, they lock on.
32:30Which is why I lost me power, because the brakes come on.
32:35Luke's brakes are designed to be fail-safe in the event of engine failure.
32:39A large spring inside the unit keeps the brakes on.
32:45Air pressure from the truck's compressor forces the spring back, releasing the brakes.
32:51Without the air pressure, the brakes automatically apply.
32:55There we go.
32:57We've got this one back up on here now.
32:59It's just one of those things that can happen.
33:02Maybe rough roads and whatnot.
33:06That's got that all fixed.
33:09It's only just a brake line. We've got it fixed up and back on the road.
33:20Just an example of things that can go wrong when you're so far away from any sort of help.
33:26As an owner-operator, with clients unforgiving of failure, Luke can't afford more delays.
33:32When you're late, you just put unnecessary stress on yourself, on the people you're doing the job for, and the people that are working for you.
33:40We've got some ball-dusty stuff here.
33:49There you go.
33:51You just don't know what's underneath it.
33:54Sometimes the ball-dust holes would be, you know, 100, 200 mil deep, and you wouldn't even see them.
34:02I've seen axles ripped out the back of caravans up here.
34:05So the rocks are still in there, and if they're sharp, they can go straight through your tyre.
34:16It's a bit touching going there for a minute.
34:25It's a good feeling to get across the border here.
34:28Too much further, is it, mate?
34:32I reckon about 8 k's, mate.
34:42Out my window here, you can see the Birdsville Racetrack, Friday and Saturday.
34:48She's going to be absolutely loaded with people picking their favourite horses.
34:52And we're here.
34:56500 k's.
34:59About 100 of it, mate.
35:04It's just another start for us.
35:07Right where we're standing is going to be 400 squares of tent here, and probably about 120 squares of kitchen and bath.
35:17We're going to have fencing and signage, and we've got to dress all the finish line up.
35:22We've got about six days' work here, and then we'll have the races, and we'll have three days' work pulling it out, and then another two days' trek home.
35:31Truck is the lifeblood of this country. They really are the lifeblood.
35:36What Luke and his crew do for Birdsville is nothing short of wonderful.
35:42I'm pretty happy with everything. A couple of little hiccups here, but we're here, we're unloaded.
35:47It's a bit of a weight off your mind.
35:48Cheers, Brunny.
35:49Cheers, Brunny.
35:51Cheers, Rod.
35:52Cheers, mate.
36:01Three and eight metres is not too far.
36:05So we might run at the top of Red Hill or something like that.
36:08Yeah, righto. Sounds good.
36:09Sounds good.
36:10We just come to the top of Red Hill, coming across that eight metre wide load, he's just
36:15coming to the top of Red Hill as well.
36:19So that was pretty good timing.
36:23He'll be able to pass on his side safely and I'll park up here and wait for him to get
36:29passed.
36:30There's enough room for both of us to pass here safely.
36:36All good, everyone got around safely, no damage very hard done to anyone, no dangerous manoeuvres
36:59so that's always good.
37:02Brothers Fardil and Farhan now have less than three hours to reach their destination in
37:08order to successfully complete another oversized delivery.
37:12We've got the last 20 k's to go and it's now 3 o'clock in the morning so it's been a long
37:21night.
37:22But there's no better feeling than carting big gear around, like you look in the mirrors
37:27and you can see 9 metres, 10 metres wide behind you and you're like, yeah, no, that's cool,
37:31you know.
37:32And then to be able to do it with your brother and that's, you know, that's even cooler.
37:37That's the end of the trip here.
37:38We'll just park up here now and do it, wait until daylight so we can unload.
37:44That's us.
37:45All good?
37:46Yeah.
37:47All good.
37:48Good job.
37:49Good job.
37:50Good job.
37:51I made it.
37:52I've been seeing.
37:53Everything went well, no dramas.
37:54Good.
37:55You definitely have to weight up your shoulders when you're here now, parked up, ready to unload.
38:07It took us five hours to get here, so that's good going.
38:08It took us five hours to get here, so that's good going.
38:12There's a few tight spots there, a few power lines.
38:15But, yeah, we got there in the end.
38:17We'll unload this one and then make a phone call
38:19and see what future hull is there,
38:21see where we go from there.
38:32Splitting to the bottom of the box now.
38:35Sitting on three to five k's an hour,
38:38absolutely redlining on the taco,
38:41and we're now three-quarters of the way up the hill.
38:44Mike is pushing his truck to the limit,
38:47desperate to get his 80-tonne payload of recycled car parts
38:51over an extreme incline.
38:54It's starting to accelerate now.
38:58I think we'll start getting some speed up.
39:02Mate, what a wicked truck.
39:05And now we're climbing 25.
39:12That's us back in the top of the box,
39:14accelerating out of Mangina East Gorge.
39:19Now we'll just build the road train and push on to Perth.
39:23After you, Vinnie, start winding.
39:25Smooth sailing from here, eh?
39:32Smooth sailing from here.
39:38Rocket ship.
39:39She's already back on 70 k's an hour.
39:41Woo-woo!
39:42Woo-woo!
39:48Two at eight and a half?
39:51What's that? Find a spot?
39:53Good idea, mate.
39:55Cheers, buddy.
39:57A two, eight and a half metre oversize coming past
39:59that's gonna take up the whole road.
40:00The biggest drama for us is that when you're running a road train,
40:05a lot of the embankments on the side of the road,
40:08the gradient, the angle is ridiculous.
40:12We've gotta quickly find somewhere that's not gonna tip our trailers on the side.
40:16You know, this is not really nice places to be pulling up a bloody road train.
40:20I said, this is a shithouse.
40:24Look at the gradient I've got to deal with here.
40:26I don't want my trailers to be coming off the road here.
40:29For sake.
40:32Can't keep going down that embankment.
40:35We're gonna lose this load.
40:38We've got two absolute monsters coming past.
40:40Just like that, we all share the road.
40:54This is the access route to the mines.
40:57This is where all your oversize run.
40:59So they're the things you've gotta contend with.
41:03We'll be at Mount Magdalene about eight o'clock tonight,
41:06which is still within our driving hours.
41:08After completing a full day of driving to Mount Magnet,
41:13Mike and Vinnie are able to push on to Wooburn the following day.
41:19Road regulations prohibit triple road trains travelling any closer to Perth past this point.
41:26We're gonna drop the trailers off and then all that stuff will get sorted out.
41:30It's gotta go to different locations,
41:32so at different times it'll get picked up by different companies.
41:35You know, depending on who needs what.
41:36We're lucky we just get to unhook and leave them.
41:46What we'll do now is head home as just the truck, see the family.
41:52This has been a successful trip.
41:54The last few days I took another loan and I'm out to go and buy some trailers.
41:57I'm happy to have about 80 grand's worth of stock.
42:01It's cost me 45,000.
42:04You know, it's not great money.
42:06As hard as it is, I'm still happy to still be out there having a crack.
42:10I tell you what, I'm pretty excited to be getting home.
42:15I mean, I can't wait to see the family, I can't wait to see the kids, I can't wait to see my wife, honest to God.
42:20Oh, dude, I can't believe we're home again. How good.
42:21Seeing that truck come down the driveway just makes me feel so much better knowing that they're home and they're safe and we get to all be a family again.
42:38Oh, how good.
42:40How you doing?
42:42How are you doing?
42:45I'm good.
42:47I miss you too.
42:49It's good. Another trip done and dusted.
42:51You know, we'll clean her up and we'll get her ready for the next trip.
42:54You happy?
42:55Yeah.
42:57Did your truck get stuck?
42:59Yeah, once or twice we got stuck, but we fixed it and we kept driving.
43:04And now we're here, I'm so happy we're here, I can't believe it.
43:09Should we rock, scissors, paper for who's cleaning the truck?
43:12Vinny, Vinny, Vinny.
43:21And there it is in front of me.
43:231,000k of red dust.
43:25See a fair bit of water laying on the road.
43:28If it rains, it turns into a clog mire.
43:30This is bloody scary.
43:32We're going across the Nullarboard.
43:34This will be very, very tight.
43:35If we find someone now, we might have half a chance.
43:38You've called outside of standard business, Alan.
43:40I don't know what to do here.
43:42It's what I call a make or break.
43:44You either make it up or you break something going up.
43:47We've got about 85 tonne.
43:49If it gets away on you here, major chances of survival are absolutely bugger all.
43:52We'll be right back to the HIPAAD-DRAW.
43:56We'll be right back to the HIPAAD-DRAW.
44:00You once again, I'll be right back.
44:02With the HIPAAD-DRAW, the HIPAAD-DRAW.
