00:00once upon a time lived a fairy godmother named chappers you have sheep as neighbors next door
00:07I love I love having sheep as neighbors yeah she soared through the Shropshire skies in search of
00:20a home for her escapees enchanting yeah Hansel and Gretel that's a good word I like that our
00:26enchanting cottage so that they could live happily ever after yeah I really I think it's great I think
00:34if I was living here I'd be like the coolest kid on the block yes
00:56if it's peace and tranquility you crave Shropshire delivers and even though there's not a single
01:12city in sight you don't need bright lights to flood this county in color at this time of year it's an
01:23escaped addition that one of the presenters kicks off a show in a beautiful bluebell wood like this
01:29one here in Shropshire now I have had the privilege of doing it in the past but I've always forgotten
01:35to do one thing and that's take a bluebell selfie with chappers country glam cam gorgeous
01:45today we're scouring the West Midlands County of Shropshire one of the most sparsely populated
01:55counties in England structure is a really beautiful county to live in there's a lot of diversity of
02:01arts and culture and it's very close to sort of walks and nature and it's like quite an inspiring
02:07place to live I mean I'm an illustrator so I'm constantly inspired by like the beautiful landscape
02:13bridge north a market town on the banks of the River Severn is split in two with high town on the
02:22hill and low town in the valley connected by England's only remaining inland electric funicular
02:28railway nearby iron bridge boasts another remarkable feat of engineering the world's first iron bridge
02:38constructed across the gorge in 1779 lots of farms and very very rural and very beautiful and wonderful
02:49landscapes and lots and lots of wildlife what can I say about this place it's wonderful
02:55it's almost time to set off on our house hunt but before we do we need to meet today's couple who are
03:08looking for a new home and a new lifestyle here in sunny Shropshire so the people who've been involved
03:15in the move will be me me and Leo who is somewhere somewhere he he was here just a second ago but he
03:24just he just goes wandering Leo the cat lives with Alka originally from Leicester and Isabella who grew
03:32up in Sicily in this three-bed semi a few minutes drive from the city of Wolverhampton where the couple
03:39both work for the council's children's services we love Shropshire it's a beautiful area where it has lots
03:45of history beautiful villages and also we got married in Shropshire so we have beautiful memories there
03:54we envisage a life which is slower paced and allowing us to pursue our hobbies and interests
04:03more as well so we really love the great outdoors so hiking that's something we'd like to do more
04:09regular and also growing our own vegetables being a bit more self-sufficient and sustainable and we want
04:15to get away from the rat race we both have really busy jobs busy lives and we really sort of our weekends
04:23are really precious so whenever we can we try to escape to the country so we may as well live there
04:29Isabella and Alka want a detached property with at least three bedrooms a spacious kitchen plus options
04:38for a study and home gym garden-wise they'd like up to an acre and they have a budget of 550,000 pounds
04:46Alka and Isabella are moving from Wolverhampton to Shropshire well let's be honest not a massive move
05:04but the difference it's going to make to their lifestyle is enormous I mean just driving around
05:10here this is the quality of life that they can have to open their back door to be surrounded by
05:14countryside to be able to walk to their hearts content and really be part of this community
05:21which I mean obviously Wolverhampton has served them well over the years but by the sounds of it
05:26they're truly ready to step into the countryside and a new way of life
05:31our search starts in the north of the county in the small village of Little Ness it's a five minute
05:40drive to Bass Church which nails all the everyday essentials including a small supermarket a post office
05:47and a pub on a quiet country lane just moments away from our first property I'm rendezvousing with Alka
05:56and Isabella to revel in the scenery Wow look at that Wow beautiful and have a proper chinwag about this move Alka and Isabella welcome to Shropshire
06:10although I should be saying welcome back because this is where you two got married
06:14that's right thank you we love coming to Shropshire we love the culture we love the events that happen and we love hiking walking anything outdoorsy so what's the one thing Alka that you're really looking forward to with this move I think it's getting away from the rat race yeah we have quite intense jobs both Isabella and I so to be able to switch off after work in my own home which is peace and quiet and tranquil in my lovely back garden
06:42in my lovely back garden that would be really really lovely for me do you know what I can see it on your face already I think we are actually mentally and physically ready for this move we've been thinking about it for many months
06:57and yeah we are ready we are ready for it well there is so much to see and explore lots of people to meet lots of interesting areas to go to and obviously gonna see if we can find you that perfect property as well should we get started yeah
07:11set back off this quiet country lane this grade 2 listed red brick Victorian farmhouse is up for sale for the first time in 60 years and when we saw it we couldn't pass by the opportunity to show it to Alka and Isabella
07:32and here she is this old farmhouse wow looks lovely lovely farmhouse yeah I'm taken back by how big it looks actually from the outside it's quite high isn't it it is my initial thoughts are warming friendly I can't wait to actually see the inside now you know I can just see myself sitting there with a cup of tea actually I'm loving the outside
07:59I'm loving the outside anyway so shall we step inside yes please now the front door looks so inviting doesn't it it does yeah but we're in the country so we're going to go around the back everybody does he'd like to follow me the neighboring property is undergoing a bit of renovation and this house dating back to the 1800s has also been knocked around to accommodate three generations currently living here part of that work including the
08:29we've decided adding this wooden conservatory that leads through to the kitchen
08:34come on through I can absolutely call this a country kitchen can't I yes you can yeah yeah very country I think workspace would probably need a bit more so we would probably change the kitchen up a little bit yeah yeah definitely yeah maybe the layout will be slightly different but yeah in terms of size I would say good really good healthy
08:55size kitchen with a utility next room and a boiler room as well yeah it's a good start it is a good start right let's see if that continues through here I hope so so the first of two reception rooms it is quite high and again we've got the beams yes the fireplace it's it's lovely spacious isn't it I think it's a spacious because when our two families come together it'll be nice that everyone has a seat yeah so um and it's kind of a
09:25kind of leads nicely from the dining kitchen area as well so it could kind of have that as a through social space
09:32opposite on the other side of the entrance hall the second reception in use as a bedroom completes the ground floor upstairs on the first floor the reconfigured layout is really evident
09:46oh okay what is this formerly a principal bedroom it's presently used as a living room you come up here
09:57and you have a second reception room that's really handy isn't it yes yeah especially if our parents are coming to stay
10:06and you know we can have our sort of own areas as well yeah got your different zones see what you think in here
10:13so as you can see I'm offering you a second kitchen wow if one wasn't enough we've got two we've got one each
10:25which is good because sometimes we fight over space don't we we do and then if there's an argument someone
10:32goes downstairs this room could subject to the relevant planning consent be turned into a luxurious
10:44bathroom suite for the adjoining principal bedroom let's keep going also on this floor is another roomy
10:53double and a recently renovated family bathroom with a freestanding tub and separate shower
11:00wow so this is the main bathroom
11:03i love it big size yeah again i think the running theme is space and look we've got two sinks there's no
11:14more fighting in the bathroom that's brilliant on the second floor there's a third double bedroom which shares a shower room
11:22with the fourth and final bedroom again big size it's a lot of space yeah i'm really impressed by how much space there is
11:34i think that's really important for me yeah given that we're going to have friends come over family come over
11:40yeah does it feel claustrophobic to me it doesn't know oh you've caught me sitting down relaxing taking in the view of this gorgeous sunshine
11:52but i've left the girls to it because there's an awful lot to this property and there's so many ways you could live in this house
11:58and what's so wonderful is both of them already very engaged working out how it could work for them and also their families
12:07the south facing garden enclosed by a sandstone and brick wall measures around a third of an acre
12:13so there's ample space for a veggie plot plus if they fancied a garden office and gym
12:20you ready to come and join me yes because i've shown you that vista but if i just get you to look over your shoulder
12:28that wasn't enough you also have the local little nest is the village the village church there's a village hall
12:34and you have sheep as neighbors next door that's very idyllic yeah very idyllic i love the fact of that
12:41i love i love having sheep as neighbors yeah so what are we thinking for this beautiful farmhouse
12:49i'm thinking top end of the budget i'm going to say 545 000 pounds okay so i think 530 thousand pound
12:59is that a hopeful 530 thousand pounds yes i am going to take you to the top of your budget
13:08so alka you're the closest the asking price is 550 000 pounds oh we have spent your money but wisely
13:17thank you yeah because there's an awful lot of property for it yeah now the owners are keen to move
13:23there is a little bit of wiggle room i think it'd be a healthy conversation it'd be a conversation
13:29worth having okay okay that's good to know isn't it yes this handsome grade 2 listed victorian farmhouse
13:36boasts a large country kitchen two reception rooms four generous double bedrooms and a walled garden
13:44that extends to about a third of an acre it's on the market with a guide price of 550 000 pounds
13:53i was actually shocked of how much space each room has and the potential of this property that has it's
14:00it's amazing it's everything i wanted in terms of the outside it's just a beautiful outstanding natural
14:10beauty around us so the scenery is great for me it's perfect how are we feeling have you seen enough
14:18uh yes yes haven't we yeah i think we have enough yeah a strong start to shropshire and more to discover
14:26and show you in one of the quietest nooks of the shropshire hills lies the town of bishop's castle
14:46fantastic place to live the walking is incredible you can walk all day 15 20 miles and not see hardly
14:53another person all day it's beautiful and as you can see the weather is always amazing it's the epicenter
15:00of daily life for the two thousand or so residents who live here and the many more who reside in the
15:06outlying villages and hamlets i just can't stop looking at that view i know it is stunning isn't it
15:12the medieval streets are chock full of vibrantly painted buildings more than 160 of which are listed
15:24many house local independent businesses such as this bookshop and cafe where the poetry pharmacist
15:31prescribes poems for any emotional ailment i absolutely love living and working in bishop's
15:38castle it's kind of the perfect size it's got fish and chip shop it's got an indian a chinese pubs with
15:46live music lots going on a swimming pool a theater even and a real strong community whose thirst is easily
15:56quenched in any one of the town's five pubs bishops castle is a great fun town to live in we have a very
16:05active social calendar we do live music on sunday afternoons outside where possible we have a fun open
16:13mic quiz nights bingo and if this isn't your vibe there's a host of sports groups to join including the
16:22100 year old tennis club hi hi hello welcome to bishop's castle tennis club helen randall one of its 80
16:33plus members moved to the town four years ago joining the tennis club was the first thing i did and i
16:40didn't really know anybody when i moved to the area but now i've made lifelong friends that was a good way of
16:45kick-starting making new friends and sort of getting to know local people and what about in bishop castle
16:51itself is there any events that happen anything that brings all the people together there's always
16:56something going on honestly it's really really active there's a big arts festival in february and
17:01then in summer there's party in the park live music and bands there's carnival as well big parade down
17:08the high street and there's a michaelmas fair in september there's christmas light switch on really for a
17:14town this size it's got an extraordinary amount of things going on all year round so you ready to
17:20have a go can you join us yeah okay yeah let's play let's go let's go let's go come on
17:25but now we must rally and see if we can ace the search for isabella and alka's dream home
17:41our next stop is way down in the south of the county in the small village of hope say deep in the
17:51shropshire hills craven arms the nearest town is a 12 minute drive away and has shops plus places to
17:59eat and socialize covered as well as rail connections to the shropshire towns of shoesbury and ludlow and
18:06further afield to manchester and the welsh cities of cardiff and swansea in a glorious setting tucked
18:14away at the end of this lane this detached cottage originally a two up two down has been
18:20significantly extended to create a characterful family home now how is this for an approach
18:28i come to show you the next property wow i'm speechless yeah it's it's different enchanting yeah
18:38hansel and gretel that's a good word i like that our enchanting cottage nestled in the valley of the
18:44shropshire hills yes lovely what more can you ask for you've got your valleys you've got your walks if
18:51you hear the birds yeah yeah so you called it our enchanting cottage yes enchanting cottage
18:57let's see if i can enchant you inside the front door in the original part of the cottage opens into the
19:04entrance hall which leads to the ground floor of the more recent two-story extension and this spacious
19:11l-shaped living room now when you step in here it's a bit of a surprise it is it's bigger than what you
19:21think what you see outside i think i'd like probably i'm more so symmetrical are you yeah but i can see
19:28there's some space there which is quite good that that's a decent amount of space if you ignore this l-shaped
19:33part mm-hmm so this is one side of the cottage okay ready to see the next yes
19:44we have a snug stroke dining room here oh look there's a little bread oven on the corner okay
19:51i'm bringing you into the kitchen
19:54it's i think what kind what's the word i'm looking for cozy it's not cozy for me no and it's not really
20:01appealing too much but i can see it works for other people yeah um you want more space a little bit more
20:09space and a little bit more light if you lost your heart to this cottage i would seriously consider opening
20:15this kitchen up yeah you've got a huge amount of space behind which at the moment they use as a
20:20utility room in a downstairs cloakroom okay i would reconfigure it yeah yeah would transform it
20:26you know i appreciate that's not a small job i don't mind getting stuck in yeah and we've got
20:31uh people in the family that could help as well yeah and i know a few trade people so yeah i'm not
20:37scared i don't mind doing any projects i think i'm ready for it if i can see potential
20:43i wonder if isabella thinks there's potential upstairs
20:47any one of the five double bedrooms could become an office but we'll check out the largest
20:54this is a nice sized bedroom though and it's actually higher ceiling as well
21:00mm-hmm you've got another bedroom next door and you could have that as a walk-in wardrobe
21:04i always wanted one yeah it'd be nice wouldn't it yeah i think a walk-in wardrobe is a must
21:09yeah because there's not much storage space in the bedroom yeah yeah definitely yes
21:15there's plenty of opportunity to reconfigure the bedroom accommodation to better suit their needs
21:22but outside the large garden already has a wooden cabin that could become a gym
21:32so what price are you going to put on this property
21:36i'm considering the amount of work that needs to be done i would say it's 415 000 pounds
21:42i'm going to be quite generous 485 000 pound the asking price is 525 000 pounds
21:51okay with two receptions a modern kitchen and five bedrooms this detached cottage sits in a
22:00captivating spot in the heart of the shropshire hills and is on the market for offers in the
22:05region of 525 000 pounds it's such a lovely character cottage quite enchanting but the inside it needs
22:17a lot of work for us to do idyllic in terms of its location so it would allow isabella and i to pursue
22:26our hobbies and interests but i do need to think practically and practically the kitchen for me is a
22:33bit of an issue i think for me there's also upstairs to consider and considering the price of the property
22:39it wouldn't leave us a lot in the budget to do what we need to do to get it to the type of house we want it
22:45to be a sad farewell to our enchanted cottage then i think we should go and have a little chat yeah
22:54we're soaking up the last of the day's sunshine in the grounds of eton manor country estate
23:11it's hard work isn't it looking at houses it really is we're exhausted sitting in the sunshine at the
23:20end of the day surrounded by the most incredible views beautiful still sold on shropshire absolutely
23:29that is i think a must for us isn't it hundred percent one of the things that really wins me over
23:35with shropshire it's one of those counties where people seem to have taken a chill pill if there's such a
23:41thing they just don't seem to be too het up about life definitely when we first met you mentioned
23:47about getting involved in the community i mean has that been a long-term plan for you both it has
23:54and being part of like a community that will be yeah be good for us because then we can meet people
24:00yeah we can start creating a new friendship in in shropshire connections connections yeah i mean it was
24:07great when we went to meet the locals actually felt really welcomed and the tennis club we got a game
24:13and you know and they were just really welcoming everyone's just smiling and saying hello i mean the
24:18best way i always think when people move out of the area is actually to immerse yourself in the
24:23community that's how you make friends with like-minded people yeah i'm sure the um the count is going to get a
24:30lot of benefit out of the two of you i hope so
24:37want to know if a slice of shropshire is within your reach let us give you the lowdown on property prices

26:33well we're having a glorious time here in shropshire the sun is shining and the sky is blue and we pride
26:40ourselves on showing our buyers different types of property and that was certainly the case with alka
26:46alka and isabella yesterday they were positive they were enthusiastic and they were very very open to
26:52suggestions so i'm hoping the same can be said for our mystery house today we're making our way to the
26:59final property destination the east shropshire village of lightmore a 15-minute drive from the market town of
27:06wellington as well as the cinema and art center there's a great mix of shops pubs and cafes emma williams has been
27:14serving up award-winning jamaican street food here for the past four years one of the best things is that
27:20we're surrounded by beautiful countryside wales is on the doorstep we're living within the shropshire hills
27:27if we need to get to cities they're not that far either it's well connected to get to birmingham
27:32manchester and various other places in fact isabella and alka might like to know there are direct trains to walverhampton
27:40with journey times of about half an hour just a 15-minute drive from wellington sits a tiny community of 14 homes
27:50that feels a world away from the hustle and bustle of town life time now for our mystery house and i think you can
27:58see from my face that i am super excited and enthusiastic about this property all the houses that i have seen
28:06over the years i've never seen anything like this yodeler i'll forgive you for thinking we've landed in the
28:16swiss alps this detached timber-built chalet style property sits in an idyllic spot on the edge of a
28:24nature reserve normally i would take you straight inside the house but there's so many enchanting magical
28:32areas surrounding it and i wanted to share this one with you it's got that chocolate box look about it
28:38it's part of a unique development of 14 homes where owners are encouraged to grow their own food share
28:46with their neighbors and contribute to the upkeep of communal outdoor spaces such as the village green
28:52it's got the most beautiful garden full of mature shrubs and trees and then also this a ready-made
29:00vegetable patch which is exactly what our girls want i can't wait to see what alca and isabella make of this
29:08oh look at this one something different hello hello what's this welcome yeah a little bit different isn't it
29:22to our mystery house what can i say amazing for me wow wow it looks like an alpine house definitely scandinavian
29:34yeah you know what i am delighted that you've given me that reaction because that's exactly what's going
29:40through my mind when i saw it it looks magical yeah it does definitely got character i can tell just from
29:46the outside and different to all the other houses yes very exciting are you ready to start a mystery
29:53tour yes let's go i'm half expecting heidi to pop her head out of the window built in 1985 with two
30:04solar panels this property has bags of character just not in the way the ladies may have expected
30:11let's start in here shall we okay spacious yeah light is a good amount of space actually in the living
30:22area and lovely big window yeah it's seeping in loads of lights isn't it i can see leo just hanging
30:30around and i suntrap for sun trap he would love it the cat wouldn't he but it's a good size space and
30:37then you've got a little sort of ante room off the sides which i'm thinking perhaps as an office
30:42yeah although i do have other options for that for you yes um open plan do you like this yeah i really
30:50i think it's great i think if i was living here i'd be like the coolest kid on the block yes definitely
30:56i do like it do you yes i do it's definitely a good start good let's have a look at the kitchen
31:02so we have a sort of semi-open plan vibe continuing through here into the kitchen oh okay again lovely
31:11windows lovely light lots of light and i really like the the bench dining space yes which is nice
31:19because you know you could be cooking i could be sitting here having a nice have a chat glass of wine
31:24yeah upstairs now to the bedrooms which are all set in the eaves of the house and benefit from lovely
31:33large windows oh i really like these wardrobes decent size really decent size actually and the
31:40nice view as well can you see the houses there yeah it really feels like we're in germany or austria
31:46i was just gonna say that yeah i feel like abroad like we're going skiing there's a family bathroom
31:54another double and at the end of the corridor a third and final bedroom presently used as a gym
32:00come office or it could be your studio gym could be because you got again gorgeous the lights i actually
32:10like this room yeah i like this room more than the others they needn't sacrifice any of the bedrooms
32:16since there's ample space in the half acre garden i think that's more than enough actually just
32:22looking around good amount of space yeah good good enough i'd be tempted to investigate looking at
32:28perhaps getting a wooden structure which has that scandy feels and have it at the end of the garden
32:34use that perhaps as the study or a gym that's a good idea yeah completely yeah yeah and that would
32:40free you that would have free up a bedroom then wouldn't it as well this is a leasehold property
32:46with 945 years remaining on the lease purchasers own the property but pay the freeholder an annual
32:53ground rent of 120 pounds there's also a monthly service charge of 30 pounds for maintenance of
33:01communal areas so let's try and put a price on this unique property a mystery house i'm gonna go for
33:08530 000 pounds okay i'm going for 525 000 pounds for the mystery house if i said to you they're looking for offers over
33:22five hundred thousand pounds okay would that work well we've got a nice big budget to work with yeah
33:34don't tell anyone don't tell anyone i'm shocked i'm quite surprised i think we've got a lot to think
33:40about because it's not just a home that we're buying it's a lifestyle that we're buying into here as well
33:45a lot to think about but it's absolutely gorgeous gorgeous would you like to have another look around
33:51on your own yes it would be a good idea please do thank you so much thank you thank you this detached
33:58timber-built chalet style home has a huge living room with a study a kitchen diner and three bedrooms
34:05with a half acre plot and shared use of the village green it's on the market for offers in excess of 500
34:13000 pounds it's it's not too big not too small it's about right for the two of us here yeah what can i
34:20say you guys i would say smashed it really a property that i would never thought to look at and again i
34:28probably wouldn't even book a viewing um but you've opened a lot of things for me to explore wow wow and
34:38wow it's not something i'd ever thought about uh it's something you see on holidays i would never have
34:45thought to even look at this house but actually it gives me really good sort of happy feelings
34:51actually evokes something positive in me so um yeah there's a lot to think about
34:58for many of us escaping to the country is about brand new adventures in the great outdoors
35:10and that was certainly the case for mark who having lived around the world made his escape
35:15to shropshire mark willis grew up in a military family exploring the mountains and rivers of the
35:21himalayas and the jungles of borneo me and my brothers would go off you know on our own
35:27white water rafting swimming rivers trekking and climbing taking what would be perceived now as huge
35:34risks mark's extraordinary childhood sowed the seed of adventure and in 2009 he moved to the shropshire hills
35:43to expand his burgeoning outdoor adventure business the ethos would be get children to try and assess risk
35:51for themselves uh to build confidence communicate well you know that's what i want to see in young
35:57people i want to you know i want to see them growing without thinking about it without you know being
36:02pressurized to think something just just enjoy the freedom of the outdoors
36:07i'm meeting mark on the 120 acre estate where he lives and runs his business with his wife and four
36:13children i mean mark this is the most beautiful of locations i mean there's vistas 360 degrees
36:24and he can tell me more about what's on offer well what i've tried to do is take the best bits of
36:30bushcraft which i consider to be shelter building whittling fire lighting some really good adventurous
36:36activity like the zip wire we've got a really good assault course we've got a really uh interesting
36:43orienteering course with an escape room on it on it you've got to build rafts you've got to build a
36:49bridge to cross a stream and that's where you see children um working at their best and they thrive in
36:55that environment and you know they thrive here but it's the environment you can't see another house from
37:01no light pollution so they get the sense of wilderness but without being in the wilderness
37:07you've just explained the extraordinary things that you do here and out of all of them am i
37:12allowed to have a go at one of them i think you should go down the zip wire do you yeah go on give
37:16it a go i'd love to great absolutely love to thank you this zip wire stretches 520 meters making it
37:25one of the longest in the country come on i know what you're thinking you're thinking is she really
37:32going to have a go on that zip wire at my age are you kidding of course i am don't be fooled that this
37:43is just for the young ones the oldest person to travel on this zip wire was 88 so i don't really have
37:50age as an excuse not to do it can you hear my heart it's really beating it is the most incredible view
38:01up here however i have the driest mouth and the wobbliest of knees but saying that i am excited at the
38:10same time mark tells me i could reach a top speed of 50 kilometers just over 30 miles per hour
38:20so deep breath one two three
38:34oh wow oh my goodness what a view
38:42it's a lot windier than i thought it was gonna be but i can see for miles and miles
38:50it's incredible the beauty of the landscape it's so green
