00:00These are the faces China never intended us to see
00:04from inside its system of mass incarceration in Xinjiang.
00:09The government has long denied its running detention camps for Uyghurs,
00:14insisting instead they are vocational schools
00:18for willing students.
00:21The photos, almost 3,000 of them, show the reality
00:25of how whole swathes of Uyghur society have been swept up person by person.
00:31The oldest was 73 at the time of her detention, the youngest just 15.
00:38The Uyghurs, with their Turkic language, Islamic traditions and roots
00:42in a region with a history of separatism and violence,
00:45have long faced cycles of tightening government control.
00:48And with mounting criticism over the camps,
00:57the authorities have taken journalists on tours,
01:00showing them Uyghurs celebrating their culture
01:03and, they say, being guided away from extremism.
01:07But it's a narrative undermined by the tens of thousands of files
01:12passed to the BBC.
01:14One set of documents describe the guarding of this camp
01:17just outside the city of Kashgar
01:19with armed police stationed at all the main buildings
01:22and with each watchtower guarded by two officers
01:25equipped with sniper rifles and machine guns.
01:29Inside, lessons are watched over by police
01:32carrying shields, battens and handcuffs.
01:36And the documents describe the response to students
01:38who attempt to escape.
01:40If warning shots are ignored, the orders clear.
01:43Shoot them dead.
01:44Yes, this is classified internal government information.
01:47The files, said to have been hacked from police computer servers
01:50in Xinjiang by a source whose identity remains unknown,
01:54were first passed to Dr. Adrian Zenz,
01:57a Xinjiang scholar who in turn shared them with the BBC.
02:00You have police officers in heavy riot gear
02:03standing next to some of the men.
02:05Some of the men have their arms in a funny position
02:08as if they were handcuffed.
02:09So this is really very powerful about the image material.
02:13And I was looking through these images on my laptop in the living room.
02:16I had to get up and go somewhere else and take a break.
02:21I was overwhelmed.
02:23The hacked files also contain hundreds of spreadsheets,
02:27row upon row of draconian jail sentences,
02:30often targeting expressions of Islamic faith,
02:32as a parallel method alongside the camps for detaining Uyghurs en masse.
02:38Just for growing a beard,
02:40Tursun Qadir was sentenced to 16 years in jail.
02:44His chosen expression of Uyghur identity forcibly removed.
02:48Many others have been jailed for listening to illegal religious lectures,
02:53including Tursun Memptimin and Ashigal Turgan.
02:56The documents don't say whether their daughters have been sent,
03:00like so many others,
03:01to the state-run boarding schools built alongside the camps.
03:07The data can be verified,
03:10shown to contain real people.
03:13Abdurahman Hassan has not seen his wife and children
03:16since he left Xinjiang in 2017,
03:18yet a search of the hacked files found this.
03:21You can see the date.
03:22A photo of his wife,
03:25sentenced, the documents say,
03:27to 16 years in prison
03:29for a vague offence that appears time and again,
03:32gathering a crowd to disturb the social order.
03:38You can see how her spirit is broken, he tells me.
03:44Mahmoud Toti knew his eldest son had been jailed,
03:47but the database tells him for how long.
03:5015 years.
03:51For terrorism offences,
03:55although as evidence,
03:57only his son's devout Islamic faith is listed.
04:02The Chinese foreign ministry spokesman,
04:04Wang Wenbin,
04:04responded to our reporting.
04:09Describing it as simply
04:10the latest anti-China falsehood
04:12and an attempt to smear China with rumours and lies.
04:16Xinjiang is stable, prosperous,
04:18and the people have happy lives, he said.
04:21But there's been no attempt to address the evidence itself,
04:25which includes these images from deep within the system.
04:29Further evidence of the harsh detention and indoctrination of a people,
04:33not for what they've done,
04:35but for who they are.
