00:04He has a full no-move the first couple of years of the deal.
00:07Now, people may have seen it.
00:10On July 1 when they signed him, I did not have a pleasant reaction.
00:14Let me make this clear.
00:16It's not because I don't like Tanner Janot.
00:18I love players like Tanner Janot.
00:21I don't love giving them five-year deals when they're coming off a season-ending groin injury
00:25and their game has treaded downward in three straight seasons.
00:28And that's what I don't like about it.
00:30You got into a bidding war for a player that you probably, in your current situation,
00:34should not get in a bidding war for this guy.
00:37It's just you're not that kind of team right now.
00:39And I like to think that you can find hammers and nail guns for a little bit cheaper,
00:45both in dollars and in years.
00:48Now, with that all said, I will tell you about Tanner Janot,
00:51talking to people that have played with him, guys that have had him.
00:55He's a great character guy.
00:56He's a workout fiend, you know, and maybe they need some of that, right, in their locker room.
01:02It's just five years of it.
01:05You know, you're kind of hoping that he can return to what he was in Nashville
01:09when he had 22 goals and 45 points and was looking like the next budding power forward.
01:14It's just the game is going in the wrong direction, right, and it has for a couple years now.
01:19So you hope you can revitalize that.
01:21But it's just a really tough ask right now because I don't think you want to put him in your top six, right?
01:27Because you don't want to put Trent Frederick in your top six.
01:29And they're kind of comparable players, in my opinion.
01:32So what you get there is going to be interesting.
01:34I think Janot's ideal spot is probably third line protecting two younger players, right?
01:41You're Matty Patras, you're Frazier Minton's, you're Matei Blumel, and that's another guy we're going to talk about here in a second.
01:46Like those guys, maybe they feel a little bit bigger, right, playing with a guy like Janot who, if you touch Matt Patra,
01:53he's going to come calling and he's going to start just dropping the gloves right away.
01:56Like maybe that's how you feel about that signing and that's why you bring him in.
01:59But that's the one I'm a little like, oh, man, is this going to be ugly by year three?
02:05You hope not, right?
02:06Because these little things add up, right?
02:07It's not a big payday, right?
02:09It's $3.8 million.
02:11Not the end of the world.
02:12It's – they add up after a while, right?
02:15And if $3.8 million is preventing you from signing a Jack Eichel or a Conor McDavid or whoever other star player hits the open market next year and wants to test free agency, that's when it hurts you, right?
02:27These little signings can add up and hurt you over time.
