00:00Political commentator Murray Hunter was arrested by Thai authorities this morning

00:04over allegedly defamatory posts on social media.

00:10He told FMT he was detained at Bangkok's Suvarna Bhumi Airport at around 7.30am

00:15as he was about to leave the country for a personal trip to Hong Kong.

00:21A Thai immigration officer said the arrest was made under a warrant issued by the Bangkok

00:26Southern Criminal Court, although further details of the allegation remain unclear.

00:33Hunter is expected to be transferred to the Yanawa police station in Bangkok,

00:38where the officer in charge of the case will take over the investigation and prepare documents for court.

00:46The Australian is a long-time resident of Malaysia,

00:49who now stays in Thailand and is known for his critical writings on Malaysian politics.
