00:00Oh
00:30Hello
00:32Hello everybody
00:34Good evening
00:36You are so welcome to the show
00:38Yes, Autumn is here and like a misty September morning
00:40I'm back
00:42Cool grey and just a little bit damp
00:44Anyway, we've got a great line up for our first show of the season
00:46Look over there singing for us later
00:48It's the fabulous Ray
00:52Love Ray
00:54She'll be performing her new single
00:56Where is my husband
00:58Where are my guests
01:00Let's get them on
01:02First off, we love them as the prime solving
01:04Dicker in Grantchester and we love to hate
01:06him as Tommy Lee Royce in Happy Valley
01:08Now he brings us the epic succession drama
01:10House of Guinness
01:12It's our good friend James Norton
01:18There he is
01:20Really nice to see you
01:22There he is, James Norton
01:24This Oscar winning actor
01:26Swaggered into our screens
01:28In Days of Confused
01:30Won our hearts in How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days
01:32And was out of this world
01:34In Interstellar
01:36His latest book, Poems and Prayers
01:38Is already a Sunday Times bestseller
01:40While he returns to our screens
01:42In a heroic true story
01:44Here is a warm welcome back
01:46To Matthew McConaughey
01:50Here he comes
01:52Hello son, it's really good to see you
01:54There you go
01:56Yes, that's Matthew McConaughey
01:58Yes
02:00And we've got two stars
02:02From the new sports drama
02:04The Smashing Machine
02:06She made her mark in The Devil Wears Prada
02:08Thrilled us in A Quiet Place
02:10And was Oscar nominated for a performance
02:12In the global hit Oppenheimer
02:14In Blunt everybody
02:16Oh, so shiny
02:18So shimmery
02:20So famous
02:22So nice to see you
02:24Thank you
02:26And as The Rock
02:28He conquered the wrestling world
02:30Before turning action movie star
02:32With roles in it's like Jumanji
02:34Moana and the Fast and Furious franchise
02:36Now earning rave reviews for his performance
02:38As champion wrestler Mark Kerr
02:40In The Smashing Machine
02:42It's the mighty Dwayne Johnson
02:44CHEERING AND APPLAUSE
02:46Hey, welcome along, what a couch
03:00Sit down, sit down, sit down
03:02Lovely
03:04Welcome along, thank you very much for being here
03:06Lovely to see you all
03:07Cheers
03:09For a show back
03:10Cheers
03:11Cheers
03:12OK
03:13Yeah
03:14If you're wondering
03:15Tequila
03:18Now some of you know it
03:19James
03:20I've got to ask
03:21Are you alright
03:22Because you injured yourself
03:23Are you alright
03:24Because you don't know anyone
03:25Well
03:28I feel like I know you
03:29I know you
03:30Yeah
03:31And you've met the other backstage
03:32I have
03:33We had a lovely time
03:34We've discussed tequila
03:35Yeah
03:36Just tequila shortly
03:37Just tequila shortly
03:38I did get into it
03:39Am I alright?
03:40No, I am fine
03:41This is the thing that's on now
03:42King and Conqueror, which is on BBC One on Sunday nights
03:44Yes
03:45I fell off a horse
03:46That's cool, look at that
03:47Yeah, I fell off a horse and I broke my collarbone
03:49Now in Iceland
03:50Now in Iceland
03:51Now I was thinking
03:52Oh, that must be terrible to fall off a horse
03:53Quite a distance
03:54And then I saw a picture of you with the horse
03:56And you are taller than
03:57Yeah
03:58That's right
03:59So Iceland
04:00Surely a pony
04:02It is a pony
04:03OK
04:04Yeah, yeah, so Iceland have a protective order on their horses
04:06You cannot import a horse
04:07Because they have this kind of gene pool
04:08And it doesn't
04:09It can't be polluted
04:10And so we were having committed to shoot the whole thing in Iceland
04:13And I was a producer on the show as well
04:14So we were tasked with finding the biggest Icelandic ponies we could find
04:18And they were
04:19That was the biggest we could find
04:20Even though it was that small
04:22I still broke my collarbone from falling from that great height
04:25So yeah
04:26When did it happen?
04:27It happened at the very beginning of all the stunt sequences
04:30That's fun
04:31Yeah
04:32Stunts though
04:33If you have one of those scenes where you might get injured
04:35It's a good thing to schedule those at the end of the show
04:37Yeah
04:38End of the show
04:39End of the show
04:40Yeah, it was rehearsal
04:41Yeah
04:42Yeah, well
04:43Producers will do that
04:44They'll put the big stunt
04:46Wait, but he's producing
04:47It was my show
04:48He is the producer
04:49I learnt a lot
04:50I learnt a lot
04:53But also
04:54Looking at that
04:55Dwayne
04:56Never do an historical epic in Iceland
04:58Because that pony would not survive
05:00No
05:01By the way
05:02Does a regular horse make a noise when you get on it?
05:05Like does it go
05:06Does it go
05:07Oh
05:08Me?
05:09Yeah
05:10Why?
05:11Because there's a lot of muscle mass there
05:12I don't
05:13I mean that
05:14A horse would be going
05:15Oh Jesus
05:16Look at this
05:17It groans
05:18Many things groan when I get on it
05:19Yes
05:20Yes
05:21I'm writing that down
05:22I'm writing that down
05:23Thank you
05:24All right
05:25Let's get on with our first film tonight
05:26Dwayne and Emily are together in The Smashing Machine
05:27It's in cinemas from the 3rd of October
05:28And here's just a little taste of what to expect
05:42Hey Don
05:44Can you take this picture for us?
05:45Yeah
05:46What are you thinking at the beginning of the fight?
05:48It's simple
05:49Am I going to hurt him before he hurts me?
05:52Yes
05:53Yes
05:54There were
05:55I
05:57I will show you
05:59This Grand Prix to crown the greatest fighter in the world
06:08He has come back from the break
06:10Let's see if he can pull out a victory over Mark Coleman
06:15Have you spoken to either about fighting such a good friend for a life changing amount of money?
06:19Good morning
06:21I just need you to let me in
06:24Always about you
06:26Only about fucking you
06:27Everything is about you
06:32Let's fucking go
06:40Extra man
06:41I love you
06:47So good
06:48Thank you man
06:49Thank you
06:50Thank you
06:51Thank you
06:52Thank you brother
06:53It is phenomenal
06:54It's a true story
06:55Mark Kerr
06:56He was sort of the first star to come out of the MMA UFC world
07:00He was yeah
07:01For a lot of you who don't know him
07:02And a lot of people don't know him
07:03Mark Kerr was the first
07:05He was one of the pioneers of
07:07There he is right there
07:08Of MMA
07:09And he was at one time
07:10He was the greatest fighter on the planet
07:13Heavyweight fighter
07:14And at that time there were no rules
07:15No regulations
07:17And MMA was different
07:19And there was no infrastructure around it
07:21There was no financial planning
07:23There was just fighters
07:25And Mark fought his way to the top
07:29And he struggled
07:31And he struggled like a lot of fighters do
07:33Unfortunately though he struggled under pressure
07:35And the pressure in many ways got to him
07:37There was addiction involved
07:38And he wound up overdosing twice
07:39And he was lucky to be alive
07:41But he's here today
07:42And not here in the audience
07:43But he is alive
07:45Ladies and gentlemen
07:46Mark Kerr
07:48But he is with us today
07:49And he had this unbelievable life
07:51And he had this volcanic relationship
07:54With his girlfriend
07:55Who eventually became his wife
07:56And they have a beautiful son named Bryce
07:58So it was really the role of a lifetime
08:02So Emily tell us about Dawn
08:04I mean she's an extraordinary person
08:06You know
08:07And I found her
08:09When I spoke to her
08:10Sort of simultaneously heartbreaking
08:11And fierce
08:13And I think it is a very complex relationship
08:18To be in when you're
08:20With a very dedicated athlete
08:23Whose life is on the line constantly
08:25Through his own addiction
08:26Through actually being in the ring
08:28And they did have this rather hazardous relationship
08:32But I think the movie is less about
08:34You know it's set to the backdrop of this 90s machismo
08:38But it's so about vulnerability
08:39And the brokenness
08:40And like how you never really know
08:41What's going on in someone's life
08:43You know
08:44Yeah
08:45And the image of invincibility
08:46Is not really the truth
08:47You know
08:48And we've got to talk about
08:49The Venice Film Festival
08:50Because you took actual Mark Kerr with you
08:52Yeah
08:53So I mean obviously emotional to watch it
08:55But to watch it with him
08:56There he is
08:57To watch it with him
08:58Must have
08:59That was the first time he'd seen it right
09:00It was the first time he'd seen it with an audience
09:02So we get to the Venice Film Festival
09:04Which we're there for competition
09:05And we're sitting there
09:06And watching it
09:07I sat next to Mark
09:08Mark's a big guy
09:09And I could feel him
09:11And he's shaking
09:12He's shaking the entire movie
09:14Especially the fight scenes
09:15With him and his girlfriend
09:16Who eventually became his wife Dawn
09:18He's shaking
09:19Every once in a while
09:20I reach over and grab his knee
09:21And towards the end of the movie
09:23Where we have the big scene
09:25Yeah
09:26With Emily and I
09:27Don't ruin it
09:28Don't over pitch
09:29Keep going
09:30I won't
09:31I won't
09:32I won't
09:33I won't
09:34So anyway
09:35You'll never guess what happened
09:36And then
09:38He is really shaking
09:40And crying
09:41And then I look over
09:42And Benny Safdie's holding his hand
09:44And
09:45You know in Venice Film Festival
09:46It's very ceremonial
09:47Right
09:48As we know
09:49And it means a lot
09:50Films mean a lot
09:51To people in Venice
09:52And at the Venice Film Festival
09:54And before the credits came up
09:56The audience erupts
09:59And they give us a 15 and a half minute standing ovation
10:03And Mark Kerr
10:05Is sobbing
10:07Which makes us all cry
10:08Yeah
10:09Benny as well
10:10And it was just beautiful
10:11We've got a little bit of footage of the ovation
10:14And I say
10:15It goes
10:16I mean it's incredible
10:17Look at me
10:18By the way
10:19Yes
10:20Let's wait till this is over
10:21So I can embarrass you
10:22Because this is
10:23I know
10:24No look at your face
10:25Beside yourself
10:26Yes
10:27And Mark Kerr's beside me
10:28That's Mark
10:29So there I am
10:30Right
10:31I'm
10:32Very emotional
10:33House lights come on
10:34Before they're expected
10:35I'm crying
10:36And I'm trying to wipe my tears away
10:38To try and still stay cool
10:39And this one is like
10:41Can you believe
10:42That we did that thing
10:43Whatever the fucking joke was
10:44That she said
10:45No I didn't
10:46You can see
10:47You can see in the clip
10:48That he's crying
10:49And I went
10:50Do you remember on Jungle Cruise
10:51He never cried
10:52No
10:53I'm in a moment
10:54I'm in a moment
10:55I'm in a moment
10:56It's like the British thing
10:58No I think it's the British thing
10:59No I think it's the British thing
11:00Like where
11:01It's like
11:02It's a long time for people to be clapping
11:03And I start to get embarrassed
11:04Yes
11:05Yes
11:06So I started making jokes
11:07Because I was like
11:08Oh God
11:09This is so much
11:10Yes
11:11And grateful for 50 minutes
11:12Yes
11:13It's quite hard
11:14Yes
11:15It's hard
11:16Thank you so much
11:17And here's the thing
11:18Just watching the trailer there
11:19That idea of Dwayne Johnson disappearing into any role
11:23You kind of think
11:24How can you transform
11:25But you do
11:26What
11:27What
11:28And it's not just the physical thing
11:30Because obviously there's hair
11:31But other things went on
11:32It was about 22 prosthetics
11:34We had Kazuhiro
11:35Who's our Oscar winning prosthetic artist
11:38And he helped me transform
11:39There was also a vocal transformation too
11:41But the idea I think of transforming for me
11:45Was something that you know
11:47I didn't know that I was
11:49I didn't know that that was for me
11:51And I wanted to do that
11:52Because a lot of times in the movies that I've made in the past
11:55The bigger movies they're big and they're fun
11:57And I've liked them from Jumanji to Moana
12:00And I'll go back to those
12:02But there was something about this opportunity
12:04Where there was a little
12:06There was a voice behind my ribcage
12:08That was just telling me right
12:10So like
12:11And I'd share this with Emily for years
12:13Like it's just
12:14It's gnawing at my gut to do more
12:17And challenge myself
12:18And grow
12:19And do something
12:20Where I'm not chasing box office
12:23But I'm doing it for me
12:24Yeah
12:25And it wound up being
12:26The most greatest
12:27Most gratifying thing
12:29And I've said this before
12:31And I mean it
12:32Smash the Machine changed my life
12:34Well you so pulled it off
12:35You really did
12:36Thank you very much
12:37It really is phenomenal
12:38And Matthew
12:39I'm interested because
12:40You had a kind of similar career pivot
12:42To what Dwayne's doing now
12:44Where you had this incredibly successful career
12:46With rom-coms
12:47Rom-coms
12:48And you went
12:49No I'm going to search out
12:50Different sorts of parts
12:51More meaningful parts
12:52How hard was it to turn your back
12:54So
12:55So
12:56Similar to what Dwayne said
12:57I had that 4am
12:58In my solitude
12:59On my own
13:00Truth that hit me
13:01That lands like a butterfly
13:03And strikes like a lightning bolt
13:04At the same time
13:05That truth that you go
13:06Okay
13:07Tomorrow when the sun comes up
13:08And I'm back in the masses
13:09And all the world's coming at me
13:10And all those offers
13:11I need to remember this truth
13:12Now
13:13I've been trying to get dramas
13:15And was even offering
13:16Huge pay cuts
13:17And they're like
13:18No stay in your lane McConaughey
13:19You're the rom-com guy
13:20You got that down
13:21Mind you I enjoyed him
13:22I was wanting to do something different
13:23Yeah
13:24Because I couldn't do what I wanted to do
13:25I said I got to stop doing what I'm doing
13:26So I said no more
13:27No more rom-coms
13:28Called the agent
13:29Said let the town know
13:31It's not going to happen
13:32I went to Texas
13:33Camilla's pregnant
13:34On the ranch
13:35Quiet down there
13:36Camilla says to me
13:37Look you don't know how long
13:38It's going to be dry
13:39How long are you going to
13:40Not go with work
13:41This could go on
13:42But this is non-negotiable
13:43We're not going back
13:44I was like not going back
13:45Now
13:46A year goes by
13:47Nothing
13:48Nothing
13:49I call my agent
13:50He goes Matthew
13:51Six months
13:52I'm going okay
13:53I may have just wrote myself
13:54A one way ticket out of Hollywood
13:55I start to think about
13:57Other vocations
13:58School teacher
13:59Wildlife guide
14:00Maybe I'll go back to law school
14:01Alright
14:02Eighteen months go by
14:04I really think I've done it
14:06I'm out
14:07I get this romantic action comedy
14:10It comes with an eight million dollar offer
14:12I read it
14:13I pass
14:14I say no thank you
14:15Comes back with a ten million dollar offer
14:16I said no thank you
14:17Comes back with a twelve million dollar offer
14:18I said no thank you
14:19It comes back with a fourteen point five million dollar offer
14:22I said
14:23Let me read that thing
14:25Yay
14:27Same words as the eight million dollar offer
14:29But it was better
14:30It was funnier
14:31I could see myself
14:32This could work right
14:33But I ultimately said no
14:35That must be so hard to say no
14:37It was
14:38But
14:39Saying no to it
14:40Thank you Hunter Lotus
14:41I think sent
14:42A little invisible message to Hollywood
14:44Oh McConaughey's not bluffing
14:46We were talking about not flinching
14:47Yes
14:48Oh he's playing offense
14:49He's not just doing nothing
14:51He's playing
14:52He's on to something
14:54And
14:55Twenty months
14:56Two months after I turned that down
14:58The offers came in
14:59That I was looking for
15:00And they came in in droves
15:02It went Killer Joe
15:03Mud
15:04The True Detective
15:05Dallas Buyers
15:06Magic Mike
15:07They came in
15:08Everything I was looking for
15:09They would not have come in
15:10If I wouldn't have unbranded
15:12For that twenty months
15:13Yes
15:14All right
15:15Now Duany you didn't have to unbrand
15:16You had enough steam going
15:17I can make whatever choice I want
15:19And I'm gonna make this happen over here
15:21It was a time for me
15:22Where I had to unbrand
15:23And it took twenty months
15:24But
15:25Then I was doing
15:26And all of a sudden my work
15:27Was challenging the vitality I liked
15:28I was like
15:29There we go
15:30So cool
15:31Absolutely
15:32And
15:33And
15:37You don't think that they
15:38Every actor that wants to be successful
15:39But then you don't want to be typecast
15:40And
15:41James
15:42You know you were
15:43So good
15:44As
15:45Tommy Lee Royce
15:46In Happy Valley
15:47You had that kind of
15:48Psychotic
15:49Like
15:54Were you just offered lots of
15:57Psycho villains after that
15:58Or
15:59Or
16:00Yeah
16:01I seem to get offered roles where
16:03They present as nice
16:04And
16:05Kind of civil
16:06And then underneath they have a heart of stone
16:07And
16:08I don't know what that says about me
16:09But
16:10Yeah
16:11I mean I
16:12Haven't
16:13Had to rebrand
16:14Which is lovely
16:15I've been lucky
16:16I've been able to kind of twist and turns
16:17And I think that's the way you keep learning
16:18And keep it fresh
16:19That's what every actor wants
16:20And
16:21Yeah
16:22I mean the villains are also really interesting
16:24Like the one I'm playing right now
16:25Is a beast
16:26Yes
16:27So you know I get to
16:28I get to play
16:29And yeah
16:30But I have to say
16:31I've cited you as someone
16:32Who has done it
16:33And you know
16:34Now you as well Duane
16:35Like someone who has done it
16:36So elegantly
16:37You managed to
16:38Go against the grain
16:39Because the producers
16:40They want their job to be done easily
16:41You know you don't want your actor
16:42To have to go on these massive
16:43Transformative journeys
16:44Because it costs money
16:45And you have to get dialect coaches
16:46And everything else
16:47You want the actor to walk in
16:48As the character
16:49And actually what we want to do
16:50Is go on those journeys
16:51Which you guys have just described
16:52So beautifully
16:53So yeah
16:54It's a tough
16:55Kind of struggle
16:56Talking of returning to our role
16:58We've seen a lot of paparazzi pictures
17:00Of Miss Emily Blunt recently
17:02Because you
17:03Are you still filming
17:04The Devil Wears Prada 2?
17:06Yes
17:07Yes
17:10It must be lovely
17:11To be making something
17:12That people are so happy about
17:13They are so excited about it
17:15It is incredibly sweet
17:17I mean we're trying to keep
17:18As much of it under wraps as we can
17:20But it's not just the paparazzi
17:22It's the fans outside
17:23I've never experienced this
17:24Where it's just thousands of people
17:26Waiting outside the sets
17:27And I think when we made the first one
17:29Like we thought it was funny
17:30We were like
17:31It's really funny
17:32And then it comes out
17:33And I was a kid
17:35You know when it came out
17:36I mean it's 20 years ago
17:37And I remember my agent calling me
17:39Going you know this
17:40This is the opening weekend
17:41I was like
17:42Is that good?
17:43Like I didn't know
17:44What was success was
17:45And so it had this meteoric life
17:48And it's amazing to come back to it
17:51And because to make the second one
17:52Obviously they needed the four of you
17:54You, Stanley, Anne and Merrill
17:55Yeah
17:56So did the four of you have a lot of say
17:58In what the story was going to be or
18:00We did
18:01I mean I think they were very collaborative on it
18:03And you know they wanted everyone to be happy
18:05They wanted us in cahoots with them
18:07Yeah
18:08It was it was really really cool
18:10Well we look forward to that
18:11But before then
18:13Do I urge you
18:14Go see Emily and Dwayne
18:15Give extraordinary performances in
18:17The Smashing Machine
18:18In cinemas from October the 3rd
18:20Very good
18:21Thank you
18:22Good day
18:23Thank you
18:24Okay
18:26Next up
18:27Matthew McConaughey
18:28He brings us the latest offering
18:30From director Paul Greengrass
18:32It's called The Lost Bus
18:34And it's out now in selected cinemas
18:36Then on Apple TV Plus
18:38From the 3rd of October
18:39Before we talk about it
18:40Here's some of the trail
18:42At approximately 6.30am this morning
18:44A fire entered the town of paradise
18:50Where do you need to get to?
18:52My son's up there with his grandma
19:01It's too late
19:03I'm too late as a father
19:05It's not too late as a father
19:13It's not too late
19:14Wowza
19:15Thank you so cool
19:16Wow
19:17And again, this is another extraordinary true story
19:20Yeah?
19:21These awful awful California wildfires in 2018
19:22And this kind of reluctant hero
19:23Tell us about Adam McKay
19:24Kevin McKay
19:25Kevin McKay
19:26Kevin McKay, sorry
19:27Kevin McKay
19:28Kevin McKay
19:29Kevin McKay, sorry
19:30In our story he's come home, because his father died
19:48he's there to take care of his widowed mother and reconcile our relationship with his son
19:52from an earlier divorce in his life. He's got a part-time job as a school bus driver.
19:57On this particular day, took the kid's school, dropped him off, was out and about, and fires
20:03were coming across the canyon. It happened all the time. No one even got alarmed. The first
20:08responders head up there and put them out. But on this day, the winds came and the fires jumped the
20:12canyon, so the first responders were stuck. And while they were stuck, they called it a
20:18mandatory evacuation out of the town of Paradise. When that happens, Kevin McKay has just made the
20:24decision, I'm going to go back and get my mom and my son, who cannot drive, I'm going to save them,
20:30evacuate them. Not two minutes later, it comes through dispatch. I've got 23 kids stranded on
20:37the east side of town. Does anyone on that side of town have an empty bus? Well, guess who's got an
20:40warranty bus? Do you pick that up and say yes? Or do you go get your mom and your son? He picked it
20:50up and he said, I got him. He picks him up. There's a teacher with a Mary Lugwig who's played by
20:56America Ferreira. And this is the story about the next six, seven, eight hours of what happens.
21:02And you mentioned the personal side of the idea of being a dad. And of course, that's incredibly
21:07present in this film because it is a family affair. Yes, it is. Check this out.
21:15I go home and pitch the script to my family, as I always do. Here's what it's about. You know?
21:21And if it's too R-rated, you've got to kind of do it in a parable form. Kids were old enough,
21:25I told them that this one was about straight. I get to the part about my son. And my son,
21:31Levi, who's 15 at the time, goes, is that part cast yet? I said, no. He goes, you think I can read for it?
21:36Oh, my God. And I just kind of look at him. Huh? Had he ever read for anything before?
21:41No. So this surprises me, but I kind of just give him a shoulder and like, yeah, right.
21:45He comes back next day. The next day, he badgers me four times. Okay. All right. First off, sit down.
21:51We're going to talk about what this acting gig is. I said, this ain't modeling. This ain't no attitude.
21:57All right. This is a freaking rodeo. You got to go with soul and no bullshit in your bone.
22:02So he goes, well, I already got a scene worked out. I want to shoot. So I pulled out my camera shot.
22:06I was like, first take. I was like, okay. Kids got present. He was able to behave honestly in front
22:12of the camera. I was like, that's for starters. You need that. Did two takes. I sent it to the
22:16casting director with a note saying, I think this is good enough for a callback. She writes back and
22:22says, I think it's good enough to send to the director, Paul Greengrass. I said, great.
22:25And it dawned on me. Wait a minute. Do me a favor. Can you pull his last name? If he gets
22:32it, is he going to have an inkling that the last name helped him? Oh, I don't want that
22:37happening. So she pulled the last name, goes in his leave. Paul sees it. Director looks
22:41out and goes, this is the kid. She said, well, you know, it's actually Matthew's son in real
22:44life. He goes, even better.
22:45Oh, that's so cool. And so it's lovely. Your son's in it. Your mom's in it. My mom's
22:50in it. My mom's in it. Tell them who she plays. Tell them who she plays. No, she plays. My mother.
23:00There she is. Kate McCulley, 93 years young. Oh my gosh, she's gorgeous.
23:04Look at your son as well. So what we're going through, Paul and I would get together every week
23:14and kind of just go over the last week. How are we doing? Are we missing anything? Is there anything
23:18we want to do? Anything special? And the news was always good. We were always happy with everything
23:21that was going. But he said about four weeks in, he goes, I got one problem. He goes, I think I miscast
23:25the mother and I either misdirected it or we got to rewrite this scene. Do you know, do you have
23:29anybody idea who could play your mother? I said, let me think about it. Next day, he goes, what about
23:34your mom? Wow. You've been making this family affair, Paul. He goes, let's just cast her. I said, hang on.
23:40Hang on. Before we just cast her, let me get her in front of you. And I said, mom,
23:44can you send me a minute video on your phone of why you love being a mom? She sends me an
23:50eight minute video. I show that to Paul. He's like, yes. That's her. What was that conversation
23:57like when you told your mom? She was already into, like, let me check with my agent, which
24:03she doesn't have. She was already like, well, let me think about it.
24:09Yeah. That's awesome. This is all sounding very familiar to James Norton because your
24:17dad, has he been in every single thing you've done? Dad? Has he? My dad has been in nearly
24:22everything I've ever done. Yeah. I'm terrified of him watching this because I know I'm going
24:26to get a text saying, why can't I play your dad? I want to, you know, I've got my notes
24:29ready. He mostly does kind of supporting background work. Yeah. He does a day as an
24:34essay on everything I do. So here he is in the House of Guinness. This is your current
24:38project. There he is. But we have found footage of him from War and Peace. This is, it's over,
24:45is it ten years ago? More than ten years. He flew himself out to Lithuania to shoot this.
24:49Yeah. He flies across the world. I did wonder how the hell he ended up in Lithuania to be
24:54in this. So he flew himself. He loves it. Yeah, yeah. Okay. He gets a free haircut. He kind
24:59of struts around the set like a peacock. Gets, you know, to flirt. You're not in this scene,
25:05but keep an eye out. I'll show you James Norton here. I mean, blink and you might miss him.
25:10But here we go. A warm peace. It's all going very well. Lovely, very dramatic. And look, who's
25:16that in the moustache? There you go. Did he keep the moustache? Yeah, he loved it. Did
25:23he keep the moustache? He didn't keep the moustache, no. Oh, it's a new one in House of
25:28Guinness? It's a new one in House of Guinness, yeah. In House of Guinness, he had to throw a
25:30bottle at me and he's not the most coordinated. It was in a stunt sequence and he had to throw
25:35the bottle multiple times. But yeah, no, he loves it. So when he comes out, is it specifically
25:39for one scene or does he just lurk around for many background scenes? No, no, no. We make sure
25:43that he's only on for one scene. I mean, he would. He would, if he had the choice, get
25:46an agent. I mean, I'm terrified. But has he never asked for lines? Has he never asked for...
25:51He had a line in one thing. Oh, it was terrible. I'm sorry, Dad, but he had a line in Lady
25:57Chatley's Lover. And I remember him, it was the director said, Hugh, let's give you a line.
26:03And he improvised something about the state of the coal mine. And he looks at me and goes,
26:07what the fuck? Like, how do I, what does he mean? And then it was, I don't know about
26:10you, but you obviously, your son and your mum are clearly much more talented than my dad
26:14because he was terrible. And I was standing there and I'm trying to stay in character and
26:18all I have is this man going, the coal is not coming up the ground. Terrible.
26:24Really distracting when you're a bad, terrible actor. And Dwayne, your mum, she didn't act,
26:32but she has now done some acting. She has. We actually, so I followed in Matthew's path
26:37and I put her in, I cast her in live action Moana. So she's in that, yeah.
26:43Does she have lines? No, thank God. OK. You went the Norton route. No, yes, that's it.
26:49You've talked about her before, but I love the idea of your mother. She enjoys your fame very much.
26:55She loves it. She does. My mum's had a tough life and she, so now she's living like,
27:00there she is. She's just living her best life. And she, she does. She, she's my biggest fan.
27:06And she has this crazy room that's called the SmackDown room. And in the SmackDown,
27:11it's just all me. Yes. Everything that I, I mean, every little thing,
27:18anything you can think of, she just shoves it in there. And I'm just,
27:22did your mum have something like that? My mum has the same room. She does?
27:24It's not, not of you, but it's of all my stuff.
27:27That would be weird. Yeah.
27:30That would be amazing. So your mum is your biggest fan?
27:33Yes, but she also, and she is my biggest fan, but she also is very clear to take credit.
27:38For all of, wow. Every role I've ever played. Here's what she comes up after.
27:44She's like, she goes, man, you did so good. I can tell where you got it from.
27:49Very proud. But we, that, we're fine now.
27:54My, my ship's stable enough where I'm like, mom, say whatever you want.
27:57Whatever you want. Now that she's got a great agent, she's good.
27:59Yes, yes. But also, she, she published a book.
28:02Yes. Can you remember what the name of the book was?
28:04Oh, yes. Because I'm, she probably has already put a sticker of the title of the book on my truck.
28:09It's called I Amaze Myself.
28:14I feel like every book, every book should be called I Amaze Myself.
28:18No, she's a legend. That is amazing.
28:21Chapter 26, guess what the title is?
28:23Some people deserve to be pissed on.
28:26What is Christmas like in your house?
28:37It's, it's wild.
28:38Is it novel?
28:39No, it's, it's, it's short, short stories.
28:41I mean, some people, it's probably helped out some people.
28:43She's very much a, um, she gets by on positive thinking and denial.
28:49And it works. And she's 93 and not shallow and kicking ass, so.
28:54Talking of books, I must say, uh, after the success of your memoir, Green Lights,
28:59you now have a new book, uh, Poems and Prayers.
29:01Yeah.
29:02Number one in the New York Times.
29:03We already know that it's going to be in the bestseller list in the Sunday Times.
29:06Oh, yes. Thank you, thank you.
29:08And, from what I read, so, a lot of the material in here, you've been working on off and on for years.
29:16Yes.
29:17So this is something you've always done?
29:19Yeah, I've been writing poetry since 18.
29:21Yeah.
29:22Yeah.
29:23And, and I think you're going to do one for us?
29:25Maybe?
29:26Yeah, I'd love to read one.
29:27Have you got the book with you?
29:28Actually, your mum is here and she's going to read it.
29:30She's here in her two-piece bikini.
29:32Ready to read it?
29:33Ready to pee on somebody.
29:35Well, you've got the book there.
29:36Oh, you've got the book there.
29:37What this, uh, why I wrote it and why I put it out now.
29:40Um, seems to me belief is in short supply.
29:44Um, look around, turn on the news.
29:46You look around, there's not much to believe in or reasons to believe.
29:51And that's not going to work because if doubt wins, we're all going to lose.
29:56All right?
29:57So this is me looking for belief because I found my own self getting cynical.
30:00I found my own self objectifying people and kind of thinking, I guess that's just the way it is.
30:05First, that scared me.
30:06Secondly, thankfully, it pissed me off.
30:08And I said, no, no, no, no, no.
30:09I promise I'd never become a cynic.
30:11That's an early death if you do that.
30:13So I wrote this to dive into my own belief.
30:16And I've also found a lot of people along the way going, they feel kind of the same way.
30:19They're looking for belief.
30:20So poems and prayers, instead of looking to reality and the evidence for belief, let's look at our dreams and our aspirations and see if we can bring those back down to earth.
30:28And that's why I wrote this book.
30:31There's a bunch in there.
30:32Why don't I read one that's kind of funny?
30:33OK.
30:34All right?
30:35And not that long.
30:36How about that?
30:37OK.
30:38All right.
30:39It's called More Time.
30:40I think it was about 2 AM.
30:41The band played the last tune and I said amen.
30:43Went to pay my tab over at the bar when the main event started tuning their guitar.
30:48So I ordered myself another bottle of wine.
30:50God, I love it when I got more time.
30:53Thought it was the year 2010.
30:56Not a worrying sight in the fast lane again.
30:59Signed all my checks one year tardy because it was 09 and I hadn't left the party.
31:04So happy my balance wasn't in the red.
31:06God, I love it when I'm early instead.
31:09Met a woman I liked and she became my friend.
31:12We turned into lovers and thought we'd make it until the end.
31:15But as soon as we lined up hand in hand in the queue, my eyes started turning a lighter shade of blue.
31:22Well, sometimes love just loses its shine and sometimes leaving early just gives you more time.
31:29Shut up!
31:30Very good.
31:33Very good.
31:36Meanwhile, in another part of the forest, James Norton brings us a new epic historical drama, House of Guinness on Netflix now and here's a taste delicious.
31:51The death of your father has served to poke a stick in a hornet's nest.
31:58A gift from Mr. Guinness.
32:01From a representative of the Dublin poor.
32:06Children Sir Benjamin leaves behind are weak and divided.
32:11Now is the time to use that weakness.
32:13Freedom!
32:17You think there'll be trouble today?
32:19The man's name is Guinness.
32:24Of course there'll be fucking trouble.
32:26There's no Tonys in that.
32:44No Tonys.
32:45No Tonys.
32:46Big horses.
32:47The Guinness family, who are fighting for control of the brewery, they are real.
32:52real and who do you play and are you kind of an actual historical figure uh so i'm not i'm made
32:58up the the the story is a kind of the the father benjamin guinness is all true he died in the early
33:041860s um and he left his power vacuments the kind of big dynasty show the four children then take
33:09over the the brewery i play their um fixer caretaker kind of the he runs the show he's the boss
33:16he's called sean rafferty and he's a he's a badass yeah he really is a badass it's really fun yeah
33:21and it's by the same guy who wrote peaky blinders right it's stephen knight yeah and he is yeah
33:27yeah and he's firing on all cylinders he's he's in his element you can tell he had a lot of fun making
33:32it um yeah it's a really it's a romp you know it's a it's an amazing period of history it's when
33:37this this brand guinness became this you know the biggest i didn't realize how famous guinness was
33:43in the 1860s it was global already well it was just this this story is the kind of the moment it
33:48exploded into north america um and on the kind of coattails of the industrial revolution and and
33:53but it's sort of it's smoky and sexy and it's irreverent and you know it's it's we have many
33:58names the crown with beer subsession it's been called uh subsession i mean there's many people
34:06have coined it but yeah it's it's a lot of fun it's definitely a fun fun romp and when i watch something
34:10like this and you know you're in it and you're doing a really good dublin accent thank you when you said yes
34:15to it did you just kind of think i'm sure i can do that accent or did you know you could do a dublin
34:20accent no i mean i was terrified you know the irish are a very well you know they're a very proud
34:25people right they'll tell you they will tell me they do they often do have you done press in ireland
34:31yet i have you got away terrifying honestly i sat on this couch with jamie dawlin and he told us he got
34:36crucified by a journalist for his irish accent yes and he's irish i was in that movie with him
34:42and we got destroyed yeah but he's irish i mean i know he's but he's from belfast and they told him
34:49his irish accent was shit so i don't know what i don't know it was anyway but no i listen the accent
34:55the accent was terrifying and i worked really hard at it because you know we've we've all we all know
34:59actors who didn't get it right and they do get held to account and did you have any kind of like
35:04were you given shortcuts into it yes i did i had an amazing dialect coach called paul um musulides who
35:10basically yeah he gave he gave me um i don't know if you've ever done this for an accent but he gave
35:15me kind of the vowels broken down into eight sounds and then these little poems actually funnily enough
35:20i could follow i could follow with one of the poems but um they they were they were kind of ridiculous
35:25and i would listen to them and look kind of crazy walking around can you remember any of them i remember
35:30um uh like the sound i mean i'm gonna butcher it and the irish people are gonna come they're not they
35:35are um no i'm not i'm saying it was a year and a half ago in my defense so like the sound like um
35:40wine light uh fine ireland was it was something like um uh the prime height for umpours in ireland is
35:48five foot nine i'm smiling now because of the fine white wine i'm drinking it makes me feel like i'm a lion
35:54a lion flying over a toy yeah yeah yeah yeah still got it still got it that's one of that's cool yeah
36:03cool you've been there no there's an actor you like it's it's very scientific you break the accent down
36:08into these times have you ever done an accent matthew yes yeah tim monick is who i worked with
36:13who's done the same things yeah yeah you give the little limericks and you just find the uh the
36:19actually the rhyme and then the vowel sound along the way and you start it sort of seeps in and uh
36:25james uh norton the this is a you know it's a big action uh series a big action role for you and you
36:31know and we've we've had fighting we've had fires you bring us explosions now have you ever had to do
36:39walking away from an explosion before so please we can get to talk about yeah so we have no you you have i
36:46know you have because there is a song so we were shooting this scene um in in liverpool and and my
36:51and sean rafferty my my role was made very easy because all i had to do was sort of strut and smoke
36:56cigarettes and look kind of cool and so within one of these scenes i was walking away from an explosion
37:00and my business partner and my dear dear best friend she she texted me in the middle of this this
37:04scene she said have you seen cool guys don't look back at explosions the lonely island guys have you
37:09seen it yeah the andy sandberg which you were in it's a song and he's cut together it's so good it's cut
37:14together all the actors and actresses over the over the time in hollywood who have walked away from
37:19an explosion and not turned back you can't turn back you can't turn back but you are my inspiration
37:23oh yeah this is this is what actually in the series this is uh sean rafferty walking away from an
37:29explosion i'm not afraid of a bit of progress and wait for it oh there you go but then i do a look back
37:36do i not no you don't no it's so cool so the rules bernie are you don't look back that's a rule you
37:43don't look back yeah and i suppose the other thing would be you wouldn't look sort of pleased with
37:47yourself for walking away from it oh no no don't don't don't look back don't that don't look please
37:51yeah don't don't don't don't just stone cold straight faces don't go straight faces yeah like this
37:55is what i do kind of thing but by the way you're a producer make it happen yeah i wasn't a producer but i
38:00i don't know what you're about yeah so so this is this is uh this is a slightly longer this is
38:05from behind the scenes of uh sean rafferty walking away from the explosion oh so uh here he goes
38:12so there's the explosion not looking back oh he looked back at least he hasn't looked pleased with
