00:00During her address at the ATS-Yunga general debate, Prime Minister of Barbados Mia Amor Motley
00:06emphasized the importance of upholding the sovereignty of all Caribbean nations amid
00:10U.S. interference. Our correspondent Krista Hoyt with the report.
00:15Amid rising tensions between Venezuela and the United States and an increased military
00:20presence in regional waters, Prime Minister of Barbados Mia Amor Motley has declared that
00:26the Caribbean must not become collateral damage. Speaking during the general debate of the 80th
00:32session of the United Nations General Assembly, Prime Minister Motley emphasized the importance
00:38of upholding the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all Caribbean nations. She calls
00:43on the international community to fully respect the region's borders and to ensure that the Caribbean
00:49remains a zone of peace.
00:51There has been a buildup in military assets in the last few weeks in the Caribbean by both
00:58sides, by the United States of America and by Venezuela. We believe that any such buildup
01:08could occasion just an accident. And if it does, a simple accident can put the Southern
01:17Caribbean at disproportionate risk. I need not tell you therefore what a war can do. Let us make a
01:28greater effort to have the necessary conversations to prevent war. It is too simple.
01:37The climate crisis advocate expressed strong concern over the global backslide on climate commitments
01:43whilst providing possible solutions for the way forward.
01:46Focus on emissions rather than focusing on the fossil fuel industry. As I have said before,
01:53the fossil fuel industry is not the enemy. It is the emissions. In this regard, we should consider
01:59working towards a globally legal binding framework on methane, which could contribute to reversing global
02:08global temperatures, I'm told by the scientists by as much as half a degree while purchasing time for the fossil
02:16fuel industry to scale up to a commercial level, the use of decarbonizing technology. This is possible.
02:24The Baku to Belém roadmap must also ensure that the necessary resources, $1.3 trillion annually by 2035,
02:33are not only committed, but delivered. The Prime Minister says it is the political will and the
02:39ingenuity of countries and financial institutions that will ensure the money can be delivered.
