00:00Hey, hey, get away, get away
00:06Oh, you've got to get away
00:10I'm a sweet life, a sweet life, a sweet life
00:18Italians have perfected the art of indulgence,
00:21so it's no surprise the phrase
00:23la dolce vita, the sweet life, was born here.
00:26And if ever there were a scene to capture its essence,
00:29surely this is it.
00:34Gliding along the Italian coastline
00:36aboard a luxury superyacht
00:38with no agenda but deciding where to dock next.
00:41A sweet life it is indeed.
00:54Our eight-day Italian icons cruise with scenic
00:58will take us from Rome, down Italy's west coast,
01:01across to the Mediterranean hotspots of Corsica and Sardinia,
01:05into Monaco and finishing up in the French city of Nice.
01:09Rome is one of the most visited cities in the world.
01:21And travellers aren't just flocking here for the ancient monuments and ruins.
01:25The power of food as a motivator for travel has never been so strong.
01:30And TripAdvisor has named Rome the number one foodie destination on the planet for 2025.
01:39So eating our way around the city has never sounded more appetising.
01:43Before we set sail on scenic eclipse, we're exploring this ancient city in all its delicious glory,
01:50with a Roman food tour.
01:52So Sam, we came to a very important place this morning.
01:56we are in the Mercato Trionfale.
02:04Trionfale Market has over 270 stores.
02:07So it's not only the largest market in the city,
02:10it's also one of the oldest.
02:13Is this an everyday thing you would do or weekly?
02:16So we usually in this kind of places we buy every day,
02:19because we got the very fresh stuff like the vegetables and the fruits.
02:24Most importantly, to be sold at the markets,
02:27the products need to be from the surrounding Roman countryside
02:30or other parts of Italy.
02:36Are these zucchini flowers?
02:38Exactly. Those are my favourite kind of flowers.
02:41They're huge.
02:42Yes, very huge.
02:43And this is the local variety of zucchini.
02:45And we love eating those flowers.
02:51What have we got here?
02:52Look at this.
02:53We are here for some olives.
02:56Really?
02:57So good.
02:59That's chateau.
03:01It's not bigger than my mouth.
03:09Rome is most certainly heaven for foodies,
03:12but it's all about knowing where to go.
03:15Do you recommend doing a food tour?
03:19Absolutely.
03:20To find that traditional food?
03:21Yes.
03:22You can discover places like this one.
03:23We are now at La Nicchia Cafe,
03:25and you will have some very wonderful appetizers
03:28with very fresh and typical Italian products.
03:30And it's also not just the food I'm noticing.
03:34We've got some Prosecco here too.
03:36Prosecco.
03:37We love Prosecco, right?
03:38But we are very superstitious.
03:40Okay.
03:41So the first thing we have to do,
03:42we should look in the eyes,
03:44eye contact always,
03:45and then we say chin, chin.
03:47And she'll, yes, like this.
03:49Mmm.
03:50Wow.
03:51Well, that's calling our name, right?
03:52Okay, here we go.
03:56Such a good mix.
04:01And that cheese is so smooth.
04:03No carb is safe with a true Roman foodie around.
04:10Amatriciana and cacio e pepe.
04:13Grazie.
04:14Is it true you eat pasta every day?
04:16Most of the Italians have pasta every day.
04:19But we don't eat big quantities.
04:21Okay.
04:22And we eat pasta al dente,
04:23which is very important, Sam.
04:25Okay.
04:26Do you know why?
04:27Why is it important?
04:28No, tell me.
04:29Because the glycemic index is low there.
04:30So when you eat pasta al dente,
04:31your body will break the carb later.
04:34And you eat less sugar.
04:36I just gave you one excuse to eat pasta every day.
04:39Oh, eating every day?
04:40Yes, of course.
04:41Like we do.
04:42Il Segreto in the Vatican neighborhood
04:44is rated as one of the best pasta restaurants in Rome.
04:49I can understand why people come to Rome just for the food.
04:54Chin chin.
04:55Chin chin.
04:58As well as pasta,
05:00the other daily staple for most Romans is pizza.
05:04It's very hot, okay?
05:05Okay, thank you.
05:07This is a very popular place.
05:09I can see why you brought me here.
05:11Absolutely.
05:12Classic pizza shop.
05:14The pizza looks really different to what I'm used to.
05:17Is it the dough that's making it quite different?
05:19The dough is very light,
05:21and even because we never use more than three toppings usually.
05:24Okay.
05:25How big, madame?
05:26More or less the same as the other one.
05:27Yeah, it's like that.
05:28It's okay.
05:29Yeah?
05:30For the Italians, it's all about quality over quantity.
05:33This is two classics, huh?
05:35This is potato with rosemary,
05:37and we have here zucchini flowers with some anchovy and mozzarella cheese.
05:43I love a carb, so I'm going to go potato on the pizza.
05:46Let's go.
05:47I want to know your opinion about this.
05:49Okay.
05:50Here we go.
05:51Mmm.
05:52That crunch.
05:53Very crunchy.
05:54That's the real Roman pizza.
05:57Even with all the pasta and pizza in the local cuisine,
06:02Romans always find space for sweets.
06:04So good.
06:05You can't come to Rome and do a food tour and not have a gelato, right?
06:09Of course you cannot.
06:10And this is a good way, then, to walk a little bit
06:13and do some digestion for all the food we've got.
06:16It's not just a dessert.
06:18The gelato is happiness.
06:19It makes me very happy.
06:22After the break...
06:23Follow me into the door!
06:25..we're sitting sail on Scenic Eclipse,
06:27headed for some of Italy's most loved destinations.
06:31And why do you think it's so popular here?
06:34Oh, because you have everything.
06:37You have the sun, you have the sea,
06:40and you have history.
06:58After farewelling the ancient city of Rome,
07:00our Italian icons' cruise aboard Scenic Eclipse has begun.
07:07First stop, the port of Gaeta,
07:12just under 150km south of Rome.
07:17Christina, this is such an idyllic seaside town.
07:20I really can see why people would love to holiday here,
07:24especially being halfway between Rome and Naples.
07:27Yeah, exactly.
07:28Are there a lot of tourists that come into the town?
07:31Normally, yes. Normally, yes.
07:33All the year over.
07:35Because we have a very good climate, you know.
07:39Gaeta is home to a unique religious site
07:42known as the Sanctuary of the Split Mountain.
07:45According to Catholic tradition and folklore,
07:47the mountain split in three at the same time Jesus died on the cross.
07:51So this is the entrance to Split Mountain?
07:54That's the entrance to the Split Mountain, exactly.
07:58That's the place in which, according to the legend,
08:01the mountain was getting opened at the moment when Jesus died.
08:06Probably is just a legend.
08:09Can be there to us in the earthquake.
08:11We don't know exactly what happened.
08:13I like your story.
08:19Oh, wow.
08:20Yeah, nice.
08:21So this is one of the cracks that we have access to.
08:24It's lit now.
08:25Yes.
08:26One of the three, right?
08:27One of the three, exactly.
08:29It's unbelievable.
08:30You can really see where it's just pulled apart.
08:33Yeah.
08:3635 stairs lead down into a very unique chapel.
08:44So there's a church built within the cracks of the mountain.
08:48Exalted.
08:49Exalted.
08:50What a special place of worship.
08:51Gaiete is home to many centuries of history,
09:01with its imposing landmark castle dating back as far as the 6th or 7th century,
09:07and a delightful medieval old town centre.
09:11Here we are entering the old town.
09:14It's very charming.
09:16Everything is here.
09:18Each stone, each brick, each pillar has more than 2,000 years of history.
09:24Wow.
09:25And people still live here today?
09:27People still live here today.
09:31While the nearby city of Naples is considered the birthplace of pizza,
09:36Gaiete is famous for a delicacy known as tiella.
09:40I'm confused.
09:41It's kind of like a pizza but a pie.
09:43I'm not really sure what it is.
09:45It's between a pizza and a pie.
09:47It depends.
09:48And what have we got here?
09:50What's inside?
09:51Okay.
09:52Here is carola.
09:53Like spinach.
09:54Exactly.
09:55And that's fish.
09:56Right?
09:57And then tell me.
09:58Okay.
09:59I will.
10:00I'll tell you.
10:01I'll be honest.
10:02If you like it.
10:03Tell me.
10:04Honestly.
10:05That is delicious.
10:08I told you.
10:09I told you.
10:14Twenty minutes drive up the coast is the seaside town of Sperlonga,
10:18which has earned itself the nickname Little Capri,
10:21thanks to its beauty and dramatic cliffside location.
10:25And why do you think it's so popular here?
10:34Oh, because you have everything.
10:37You have the sun, you have the sea, and you have history.
10:42It is a beautiful view up here.
10:53But while the surroundings of Sperlonga are simply stunning,
10:57scenic eclipse is always a lovely place to land at the end of the day.
11:02The dining experience on board is every bit as enjoyable as the destinations themselves.
11:08From fine dining to casual pizzas.
11:11And my personal fave, the sushi bar.
11:16Within Coco's Asian fusion restaurant is a sushi and sake bar.
11:21Beef tataki is a beef tenderloin thinly sliced with torch.
11:25The cuisine at sea is as diverse and delicious as anywhere you'd find on land.
11:30And it's always a great way to catch up with fellow travellers.
11:34And why did you choose this trip in particular, the Italian icons?
11:38Oh, well, there's so much to see in the Mediterranean.
11:41Seeing it from the air or from a train or from a plane,
11:44a lot of it would be travelling in between locations.
11:48Whereas on scenic eclipse, you get to go into the port,
11:53you can see everything, you come back to the ship,
11:55it's your same room, it's fantastic.

12:30After the break,
12:32we're exploring the island of Capri from the air.
12:37This is one of the most beautiful and famous coasts in the world.
12:50Waking up in Capri is exactly the kind of delightful predicament
12:56you'll find yourself in on scenic's eight-day Italian icons cruise.
13:00MUSIC
13:08Sitting at the southern end of the Sorrento Peninsula, Capri
13:12is home to one of the most dramatic stretches of coastline in southern Italy
13:17and one very famous natural landmark.
13:19So we're coming up to the Blue Grotto now.
13:26What am I going to expect?
13:29That's the main attraction of the island.
13:31Yeah. The busy one.
13:33And these are blue key.
13:35We go inside and we will see this magnificent blue color.
13:39That's make this grotto famous in all the world.
13:43And it's really busy.
13:45A lot of boats, a lot of people all lined up.
13:50It's very complicated to understand who is first, who is second,
13:54but they know the system.
13:56And it's busy every day.
13:58Experiencing the Blue Grotto is quite the adventure.
14:02Oh, oh my gosh.
14:04The waves go right up.
14:10And the first step is to jump aboard one of these small rowboats.
14:14Looks very tight and very small.
14:16You know what you have to do, you have to pray, pray.
14:20I can start being religious.
14:21And lay down like that.
14:23We're going to get to know each other very well.
14:24Yeah, yeah.
14:25Wow, okay.
14:26May I, may I?
14:28A romantic.
14:30Oh, mamma mia.
14:32Here we go.
14:39We made it!
14:40Beautiful.
14:41It's definitely worth all that chaos outside coming inside.
14:50Everybody say that because sometimes people wait even two hour or more to get into.
14:56Honestly, it doesn't feel real because that color is just so bright.
15:01And how is it so blue?
15:03Hello, the first thing is,
15:05Capri is not volcanic like Older Bay, but it's a limestone highland.
15:09So we have a white stone.
15:10That means that we have white sand and make this a color reflection.
15:14But why?
15:15Because we have another arch under, under the sea.
15:19So sunlight coming from the bottom and make this chocolate light and make the glow so blue.
15:22Back on shore, the Piazzetta, Capri's main square, is the lively heart of the island.
15:38It's very popular and it's really busy.
15:40And we're not even in the thick of the season yet.
15:42So is this like this all year round?
15:44Yeah.
15:45Because it's another place that a must place to see in Capri.
15:47So everybody come here to see the atmosphere around.
15:50There are many coffee bars and people fighting to get the best table here.
15:57And we are, you know, right up on top of the mountain.
16:00I can't even imagine how this was built.
16:04The town were built on the top in order to defence, you know, to be not close to the cost.
16:10So even to go up to the houses over there,
16:13people have no possibility to go by taxi or by bicycle.
16:18It's pretty complicated.
16:19So Capri's a good workout?
16:20Yeah, a good workout.
16:21OK.
16:24Many of Capri's narrow streets and laneways are pedestrian only.
16:28And while it's steep, the town is small enough to be explored on foot.
16:33What a beautiful part of Capri.
16:36It's my favourite. It's the Augustus Garden.
16:38The Augustus Garden.
16:39Yeah.
16:40It used to be private before, then it's a public garden now.
16:44All those images of Capri that you see on the postcards, this is the spot.
16:49Yes.
16:50Famous even for wedding, for the beautiful view that we have.
16:53And everybody find a way to arrive up here to the Garden of Augustus.
16:57For all of Scenic Eclipse's many features, one of the big highlights for guests is the two state-of-the-art helicopters.
17:14So how does flying over Sorento and Capri compare to other destinations you've piloted in?
17:27Well, this is one of the most beautiful and famous coasts in the world.
17:34It's one of my favourite spots here in Intel.
17:37How does a helicopter transform the guests' experience on the Scenic Eclipse?
17:44We go to all these beautiful places, but of course you'll see it either from the ship or on land on an excursion.
17:51But you're always on land.
17:52You will not have this view anywhere else than in one of our helicopters.
18:00And we can do this, most of all, all over the world.
18:05I've never seen the sights like this from this view and it is absolutely mind-blowing.
18:16OK travellers, it is competition time.
18:19Our friends at Scenic have given us an ultra-luxury, iconic Mediterranean cruise to give away.

18:59After the break, we're in Pompeii, one of the most intact archaeological sites on the planet.
19:12This is the reason why you see a thousand people coming to visit Pompeii.
19:17What was the life in the past?
19:18Was it all so bad?
19:23I am giant
19:26Stand up on my shoulders
19:29Tell me what truth seems
19:32Almost halfway into our eight-day Italian Icons cruise aboard Scenic Eclipse
19:37and the port of Sorrento in southern Italy is today's launching pad
19:41for exploring one of the greatest archaeological sites on the planet.
19:45The ancient city of Pompeii was destroyed by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius back in 79 AD.
19:59Mount Vesuvius looks so innocent here, but it created so much destruction.
20:06Yes, it looks quite sleeping, but it's very active.
20:11Imagine, 2,000 years ago, people were living in this area, and then the city was shaken by an earthquake, and looking towards the mountain, what they saw?
20:23A volcanic column.
20:26Two days of eruption.
20:2820 hours of ash rain, pumice stones rain, and the city's ceilings, the roofs have fell down.
20:34People were unfortunately entrapped into their dwellings.
20:40It's a tragedy, I know.
20:43Pompeii is a snapshot of ancient Roman life, frozen from the time it was buried in ash.
20:49Everything buried in the ash has been preserved.
20:58And now I feel we have so much information of how they lived.
21:02Yeah, you're right.
21:03Because of how well it still remains.
21:05But in fact, this is the reason why you see 1,000 people coming to visit Pompeii.
21:11Because they want to really see, touch by hand, let's say, what was the life in the past.
21:21And where are we now?
21:22Oh, we are at the entrance to the most ancient thermal centre in Pompeii, the spa.
21:30Pompeii's thermal baths suggest the ancient city's upper class enjoyed a rather lavish lifestyle.
21:37This is a really beautiful world.
21:41It's amazing.
21:43It's beautiful, well preserved.
21:45You can see the ceiling with the ancient decorations of fresco.
21:49And imagine here, a bronze bench, people laying down, having the massager with their oil.
21:57So elaborate as well.
21:59This spa was part of a grand residence and is considered one of the largest and best preserved private bathhouses in Pompeii.
22:08And what room is this?
22:10This was the sauna room, the steam room.
22:13And it was so hot and that's why it was so important to come here and refresh cool water.
22:19Okay, so that was cool water.
22:21Cold water.
22:22Cool off.
22:23And then sit again.
22:24Exactly.
22:25And chart and mix business.
22:28What a retreat this whole spa is. How delightful.
22:32And the best.

23:05There's nothing quite like a holiday where you go to bed at the end of each day not knowing what tomorrow will bring.
23:21That's the beauty of travelling by sea.
23:23Each day brings a new port, new places to explore, new foods to try and of course history to discover.
23:36Next week, my cruise continues to the Mediterranean islands of Sardinia and Corsica.
23:41It does have that rugged sort of appeal. I can feel it.
23:44Then up to Monaco and finishing off in the magnificent French city of Nice.
23:49See you then. Good night.
