00:00Denmark has been forced to halt flights at its Alborg Airport for the second time in
00:0524 hours over a suspected drone hybrid attack.
00:10Former FBI Director James Comey has been indicted on charges of making false statements and
00:15obstruction tied to his testimony before Congress in 2020.
00:21Suspected drone activity disrupted Denmark's Alborg Airport for the second time within
00:2624 hours on Thursday evening.
00:29The incursion forced the airport, used for commercial and military flights, to shut shortly
00:35from 11 p.m. to 11 a.m. after an object was sighted in the sky.
00:40Danish Security and Intelligence Services are investigating the incident.
00:44We are in a very serious security situation.
00:46There is no doubt about it.
00:47It matters in the whole of Europe and also in Denmark.
00:51Thomas has also said that we have no evidence that we can put a name on an actor.
00:57But we can say that this looks like a model for hybrid crisis.
01:03That's what we have seen andre steder in Europe.
01:05I mean, as some of you know, that we have seen, that the risk for Russia's bionage in Denmark is
01:14high.
01:14The incident on Thursday night, the third this week in Denmark alone, is part of what some European officials see as a pattern
01:30of Russian disruption at a time of high tensions between Moscow and NATO at a time of high tensions between Moscow and NATO.
01:49It's a truly historic and shocking decision.
01:56A Paris court sentenced former President Nicolas Sarkozy this Thursday to five years in prison for criminal conspiracy
02:05in an alleged scheme to finance his 2007 presidential election campaign using Libyan money in exchange
02:15for diplomatic favors. However, the former French president was acquitted of the other three charges.
02:22But what's really striking about this Thursday's decision is that the judge requested for a deferred detention order with immediate effect.
02:31This means that Nicolas Sarkozy will be summoned on October 13 to find out about the date and conditions of his
02:40incarceration, which cannot be avoided even if he appeals. His imprisonment would be a first in French modern political history.
02:50But at 70 years old, however, the former French president could request a conditional release.
02:57Here are some of his first words after he found out about the sentencing.
03:03I ask the French that they voted or not for me, that they support me or not, to appreciate what just happened.
03:18The court also imposed a five-year ban on the court.
03:45The court also imposed a five-year ban from holding public office as well as a €100,000 fine.
03:53The judge said that they could not prove that Libyan money ultimately funded Sarkozy's 2007 campaign,
04:01but emphasized that conspiring to commit corruption is a crime in itself under French law.
04:08Sarkozy said that he plans to appeal this decision.
04:12This verdict adds to Sarkozy's growing legal troubles.
04:17He has already been convicted in two other cases.
04:20The Big Malian affair for his 2012 illegal presidential campaign financing,
04:27as well as the so-called abysmuth case involving corruption and influence peddling.
04:32Sofia Katsenkova reporting from Paris for Euronews.
04:36The Global Sumud Flotilla says its main vessel, the family boat, will not continue towards Gaza
04:44after suffering a serious mechanical failure in Crete.
04:48Activists on board have been moved to other ships as the convoy,
04:52which includes climate activist Greta Thunberg, repairs damage from recent drone attacks.
04:57The family boat was hit by a drone earlier this month, one of the several assaults targeting the humanitarian convoy
05:05as it tries to break Israel's naval blockade of Gaza.
05:08Italy's President Sergio Mattarella has appealed directly to activists on board to accept an offer from the Catholic Church.
05:15The Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem has said it would take the aid the flotilla is carrying for Gaza and deliver it.
05:25Both Italy and Spain have deployed ships for potential rescue and assistance.
05:29Portugal has ruled out a military escort for the boats, despite several Portuguese nationals on board.
05:38The flotilla has vowed to continue its mission despite setbacks, delays and what it says is political pressure.
05:44The boats are currently in waters off Crete before they begin their next push towards Gaza.
05:53U.S. President Donald Trump on Thursday signed an executive order he says would allow TikTok to continue operating in the U.S.
06:01The Chinese-owned social media app's future was at stake after U.S. officials raised data security concerns.
06:07Trump's order will enable an American-led group of investors to buy the app from China's ByteDance.
06:13Though the deal is not yet finalized and also requires China's approval.
06:17Under the terms of the deal that have so far been revealed by the White House,
06:21the app will be spun off into a new U.S. joint venture owned by a consortium of American investors,
06:27including tech giant Oracle and investment firm Silver Lake Partners.
06:31Vice President J.D. Vance said there was some resistance to the agreement from the Chinese side,
06:36although he did not elaborate what Beijing's opposition was to the deal.
06:40TikTok's future in the U.S. was unclear after former President Joe Biden signed legislation last year
06:46announcing that it would halt operations unless sold to an American firm.
06:50Former FBI Director James Comey has been indicted on charges of making false statements and obstruction tied to his testimony before Congress in 2020.
07:03Prosecutors say he lied about whether he authorized links of classified information during hearings linked to the Russia investigation,
07:11the same probe into Donald Trump's 2016 campaign that the former President has long dismissed as a hoax.
07:18The indictment comes just days after Trump urged his Attorney General to prosecute Comey.
07:24Trump called the charges justice for the U.S.
07:28Comey is the first senior official tied to the Russia probe to face prosecution,
07:33raising concerns that the Justice Department is being weaponized for political ends.
07:38At the United Nations General Assembly, the European Union signed a €400 million financing agreement with the Palestinian Monetary Authority,
07:48aimed at boosting small businesses and supporting the private sector.
07:53First of all, as you know, the European Union is the biggest financer of the Palestinian Authority.
08:01We have this big reform metrics program which is worth €1.6 billion.
08:08This morning, as you see, we signed the agreement between the European Investment Bank and the Palestinian Monetary Authority,
08:16but the European Commission is guarantor of this loan.
08:22This loan is very important because we want to make the Palestinian economy also vibrant.
08:28So this is for 20,000 people who can establish small and medium enterprises.
08:36It has been...
08:38Sawika also responded to U.S. President Donald Trump's criticism of countries recognizing Palestinian statehood.
08:45...in their fight for a just and lasting peace.
08:48There are three issues on which all of us agree, even Trump.
08:53First is release of all hostages.
08:56Second one is on no role for Hamas.
09:01And the third one is the flow of humanitarian assistance.
09:05And all these three could lead to ceasefire.
09:09And this is where all of us agree.
09:12Of course, there are 149 countries which now recognize or they are just about to recognize Palestine.
09:25So there is a huge pressure, I think.
09:27And little by little, I think that everybody will be aware that the only solution is two-state solution.
09:34To the negotiation table.
09:37In their future reconstruction.
09:41It's a subject that has caused a stir in French politics, the so-called Zuckman tax.
09:47The proposal, devised by economist Gabrielle Zuckman, suggests that tax households that own more than 100 million euros in assets contribute at least 2% of their wealth every year.
10:00It aims to restore a greater amount of tax justice, whilst at the same time generating revenue as France struggles to balance its budget.
10:08The first one is that it's a very popular measure.
10:11So like the latest poll that I've seen, I think, place it at like an approval rate of like 86% across the population and also importantly across the political spectrum.
10:21The second thing is that it does respond to a problem.
10:26So the problem being the ultra-rich pay less.
10:30According to Zuckman, the scheme would make it possible to make up part of France's deficit without making deep budget cuts.
10:37The tax could bring in around 20 billion euros for the French government.
10:42The cumulative effect at an EU level would be even greater.
10:47It's estimated that such a tax would bring in 67 billion euros for member states.
10:52But other economists say that these figures don't add up.
10:57We won't reach 20 billion euros. I absolutely don't believe it.
11:01Some estimates arrive at 5 billion euros, but I even ask myself questions.
11:07I think it's possible that it doesn't relate to anything.
11:09Because, as I said, there is a dynamic of adjustment of behavior, which is often very underestimated by economists,
11:14which makes people not let themselves do it.
11:19There are strategies that are used to try to avoid this debt.
11:24In Europe, Spain has had a solidarity tax on large fortunes for three years.
11:30Norway and Switzerland also apply a tax on very high incomes.
11:35But these two countries have particularly high financial resources.
11:38Other countries have a partial taxation of the ultra-rich, such as France, Belgium, the Netherlands and Italy,
11:45which tax very specific assets.
