00:00African leaders addressing the session of the United Nations General Assembly New York this week
00:06are advocating for inclusive development, equitable trade and a rightful place at the decision-making table.
00:14The world is fractured by conflict, displacement and economic instability,
00:22instability, straining multilateral cooperation and a serious issue for us to reach consensus.
00:33A global liquidity crisis threatened to plug millions of people into poverty and insecurity.
00:43They called for bold partnerships and inclusive development to bring about lasting peace.
00:48The role of Africa in the community of nations must be respected.
00:54Sovereignty rather than subordination. Partnership rather than exploitation.
00:59It is unacceptable that poverty is worsening in Africa while wealth is accumulating in northern countries.
01:06It is time for the injustices inflicted upon Africa to be repaired.
01:10We call for a reform of its bodies, starting with its Security Council,
01:19so as to make these bodies more representative,
01:23more transparent and closer to the realities of our world.
01:32One can see clearly that the Security Council in its current composition
01:41no longer reflects the geopolitical balance of our world.
01:49Thus, the urgent need to reform it,
01:53not in theory, but in practice.
01:57The 88th United Nations General Assembly, which started on Tuesday,
