The third day of the general debate at the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly took place this Thursday at the organization’s headquarters in New York. Several world leaders delivered powerful speeches addressing current global challenges. In his intervention, the President of Bolivia issued a strong warning: he stated that the risk of a third world war is imminent if the UN fails to act in time. He asserted that the United States is seeking to reassert control over Latin America and denounced the presence of a “death threat” looming over the region and the Caribbean, amid ongoing violations of international law.

00:00Third day of the general debate at the 18th session of the United Nations General Assembly
00:06took place on Thursday at the organization's headquarters in New York.
00:11More on the day's addresses with our correspondent Jorge Gestoso.
00:16Luis Arce, during his final address as president of Bolivia,
00:22delivered a very strong message at the United Nations General Assembly here in New York.
00:27I think the risk of a third world war is very near if the UN doesn't react on time.
00:38And President Arce mentioned that the US is seeking to regain control of Latin America.
00:44The threat of death is covering Latin America and the Caribbean.
00:52Beyond violations of international law, this provocative action of imperialism has two intentions.
01:00To intervene into our kindred Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela,
01:05which possesses considerable natural resources, particularly in oil,
01:10which the North wishes to appropriate and claim.
01:14Secondly, to try to reconquer the Latin America and the Caribbean on the basis of it undermining liberal democracy,
01:25to impose militarization and to use other colonialist practices that we should call out.
01:32Arce also called the US claim that this military operation is meant to, quote,
01:37fight drug trafficking and combat organized crime, unquote,
01:42a fallacy, arguing that if they were true, they would begin tackling both problems in their own country.
01:50And on the regional situation, in addition to military actions,
01:56Luis Arce referred to the economic blockade against Cuba and the billions in losses
02:02called by the unilateral measure from Washington against the Caribbean nation,
02:08spanning six decades due to, quote,
02:11the empire's rejection of the region's first socialist revolution.
02:17In his virtual address to the General Assembly today,
02:22because he was denied entrance to the United States,
02:26Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas
02:29forcefully condemned Israel's campaign in Gaza
02:32as constituting genocide and crimes against humanity.
02:38By the Israeli occupation forces,
02:41in which they killed and injured more than 220,000 Palestinians,
02:47the majority of whom are unarmed children, women and the elderly.
02:54Abbas affirmed that the Palestinian Authority
02:57is prepared to assume full responsibility for security and governance in Gaza,
03:03insisting that Palestinians would not abandon their land or identity.
03:09Haiti's representative Laurent Sancir declared that, quote,
03:14Haiti is at war, unquote,
03:17emphasizing daily terror, bullets, fire and fear,
03:21the destruction of neighborhoods,
03:24displacement over a million people,
03:27hospitals burned and vandalized,
03:30and a looming risk that the country's crisis will spill regionally.
03:36It is critical to listen to the voice of the Haitian people
03:38to try new solutions that are stronger and more adapted to the realities on the ground.
03:44Sancir said, quote,
03:46I'm ashamed on behalf of the world that we cannot find it in ourselves to be more compassionate,
03:54to recognize what people in Haiti are going through.
03:58Mexico's foreign minister, Juan Ramón de la Fuente,
04:01reaffirmed Mexico's call for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and its opposition to genocide.
04:09The wars in Gaza, in Ukraine, and in all the other places that they're taking place must end now.
04:19While also emphasizing that Mexico seeks a respectful, cooperative partnership with the U.S.,
04:27one based on mutual sovereignty,
04:30shared interests like immigration, trade, security,
04:34and clear expectations rather than subordination.
04:39And Ecuador's president, Daniel Novoa,
04:42used his address to highlight Ecuador's challenges with crime and security,
04:47advocate for constitutional and institutional reforms,
04:51and appeal for international cooperation and investments to bolter development and stability.
04:59And at the end of this third day of debate here at the United Nations in New York,
05:07there's something more and more clear.
05:10The crisis needs unity.
05:13Indeed.
