Venezuela has urged the U.N. Security Council to condemn recent U.S. maritime strikes in the Caribbean, saying they violate its sovereignty and international law.

00:23Venezuela's UN Ambassador Samuel Moncada submitted a letter on Wednesday
00:27accusing the United States of killing at least 27 people
00:31in five strikes on civilian vessels in international waters.
00:36The letter called on the UN Security Council to investigate the attacks.
00:40Washington defended the strikes, saying they are consistent with Article 51 of the UN Charter,
00:47which allows countries to act in self-defense against armed threats.
00:52Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro called the U.S. actions an open attack on peace,
00:57and accused the CIA of carrying out operations against his government.
01:02The Security Council is expected to hold closed-door discussions on the matter later this week,
01:08but no formal resolution is expected.
