Social movements in Rio de Janeiro held the debate Brazil and Venezuela: Paths to Latin American Unity and Popular Sovereignty. The event was supported by the National Mutual Solidarity Movement, as well as by academics and social leaders. They spoke about the pressure of imperialism throughout Latin America, especially in Cuba and Venezuela. They also warned that the militarization of the region, not only in the Caribbean but throughout South America, poses a danger to the entire continent. Furthermore, they emphasized the importance of protecting Venezuela to preserve Latin America as a zone of peace.
