00:00my father grabbed me off my mother because I was in her arms the train pulled away I've
00:14never seen my mother again out of the blue he just said I just want to make sure mom
00:22told you the family secret every year thousands of people come to us looking for missing family
00:29she's my sister she's loved and she needs to know that she's loved sometimes it's to solve a mystery
00:39that's troubled them for decades I'm petrified of looking for her I've just got to try or to end
00:48the torment of what they don't know any siblings any answers any anything be great so imagine the
00:57moment hi when the burning questions can finally be answered I never ever thought that this was
01:13happening reuniting families who've spent a lifetime apart
01:21our first searcher Lee came to us believing he was a foundling left with a woman in a block of flats
01:42the first discovery we made was that this simply wasn't true 56 year old Lee lives in Eastbourne and
01:56owns a retro clothing store 10 30 we've got that new delivery come in we'll move that section to there
02:03and build that little red white and blue section in there yeah okay when I was a kid growing up my
02:08mom and dad we didn't have much money I won't a pretty boy but I wanted to dress well so when I
02:13was 16 I started working in a jean shop as a YTS boy and now I'm 56 I still do the same job I've got
02:22the best job in the world just swap that over I was always told that I was foundling by my adoptive
02:29mom and dad who did love me and I loved them back and I was happy with that lot but I was sort of
02:34had this silly thing in my head where I didn't really exist I was dropped from space I had no
02:38birth certificate and just wasn't real but our discovery about the start of Lee's story is
02:46completely different I wanted to talk to our lead social worker Ariel Bruce to find out more when he
02:55came to us he thought he was a foundling it was when we started to search we then came to the
03:01realization that actually there had been a conventional adoption with a conventional
03:06registered birth and he wasn't a foundling Wow does he know now he does know as social workers
03:13we had a moral obligation to ensure that he knew Ariel has now given Lee his birth certificate
03:21actually see it in black and white I've never had a birth certificate I've never had one look what my
03:27name is look Mark Anthony not sure about the Anthony when I saw my birth certificate for the first time it
03:37actually blew my mind it's got my mum's name on there it just makes her real doesn't it
03:45story my adopted my dad had told me there was something along the lines that the girl had a
03:54baby in a pram and she couldn't keep me and couldn't have me I was told she was Irish and I was told that
04:01she knocked on the door of a block of flats and just said to the lady after the door sorry he's yours now you
04:09know the thing that surprised me was knowing that my mum had been married so that's the thing that
04:20shook me I thought my mum was probably 16 or 17 that's what I had in my in my head so that was the
04:27thing that shook me a little bit was knowing he said she'd been married but the father wasn't on the
04:33birth certificate so I don't know and you see where I lived look in Paddington told you I was posh
04:41Lee has returned to where he lived as a newborn with his birth mother whoa
04:52this is it
04:57when you see it on your birth certificate and you touch it and feel it and look at it in real
05:14life it's just mind-blowing absolutely brilliant my heart is jumping out my chest for the first time
05:26today and it's all so real it's it's nuts and I lived in one of them
05:38when I look at this and think back then I always think about how she felt and what she felt and how
05:44schedules was there no money left no food was she at the end of her terror
05:56absolutely mind-blown now I know where I lived my birth mother I hope she's alive any siblings any
06:12answers any anything would be great I'd love to know everything about the early days I'm got a clue
06:21what happened but there must be some tough old stories to tell and some high and I'm all ears
06:28because we'd found Lee's birth certificate we were able to search for his birth mother we looked in the UK
06:40and Ireland but we were unable to trace her however further investigations revealed something else Lee's
06:46mother had another older son called Stephen who was born in East London we tried tracing Stephen but could
06:54find no listing of him in the capital so we threw the net wider and found him living in Scotland
07:02Stephen's a retired cardiac nurse who lives here with his wife and family
07:15growing up with a vague and inaccurate story about his adoption must have been so hard for Lee but now
07:23we found a brother Stephen I want to ask him about his upbringing and what that might tell us about what
07:31really happened
07:38oh hi Nicky Stephen how you doing pleasure to meet you you too please come on in thank you so much
07:48can I have a seat thanks how you doing I'm doing very well pleasure to meet you you too really is
07:54what a lovely part of Scotland it's lovely isn't it yeah but the first thing I need to find out is
07:58did you have any idea that you have a brother no so I was brought up by my grandparents at no point
08:07ever was there ever any mention that there could be another sibling nothing what was it like hearing
08:12about it emotional maybe but I did just unbelievable really tell me about your upbringing
08:20within the household there was my grand my granddad and my auntie was there as well
08:26I was basically told that my mum who'd come over from Ireland was finding it difficult coping with
08:34having a child my my grand story that she told me was one one evening my dad had come back from work
08:42and it found me crying in the court with a small note from my mum saying it's him or me
08:48a note from your mum yeah your grandmother said yes it's him or me yeah and it was decided to
08:54approach my grandparents to see if they would look after me and that's what happened and I am they
09:00applied for my guardianship and they were given that and I think I was just a couple of years old
09:06what does that make you feel like a pretty unwanted really to be honest um but the thing was why did
09:13you feel like that and then over time then you begin to think as well well why did my dad allow that
09:18what were your feelings when you thought about your mum and dad why weren't your mum and dad with you
09:25throughout my childhood they weren't always in my life but they were in the background I still
09:31spoke to him so I wouldn't say I ever loved my parents I was just aware of them and I had a
09:36relationship with them just for enough to be able to go and visit and such like what was the last time
09:43you saw your mother I haven't spoken to her for 32 years when Lee first came to us
09:53he thought he was a foundling because he had been told by his adoptive parents
10:00that a young irish girl had left their baby with some neighbors of theirs and then they took on the
10:08baby I find that which is quite disappointing that that's that's what happened to be honest what
10:14I'd really like to know is when was my brother born Lee is younger than you wow so that that comes as a
10:23surprise that'll take a few days to process so Lee very happily married to Aisha he runs a a retro
10:32clothing shop you can have some of mine if you want that's fantastic yeah he would describe himself
10:39as a mod when I just wondered if you might have a photo of him so I can actually see what he looks
10:43like I do have a photo of him
10:53both go for this glasses but I'm a bit disappointed he's got a bit more hair than me fantastic
10:59I'm so looking forward to meeting him so looking forward to meeting him
11:07thank you
11:11it'll be interesting we'll chat music I'm a rocker you're a rocker he's a mod
11:16I'm a please tell me please tell me we're not meeting in Brighton that would be an absolute disaster
11:21oh fantastic
11:29but before we tell Lee the good news we turn to another search for a brother
11:34for Peter McDonald it was a single moment at a train station that changed his entire life
11:40and separated him from his birth family my father grabbed me off my mother I was in her arms
11:53I was two and a half months old that's the last time I was with my brother Trevor
12:00I've always wanted to find them yeah
12:09just make it complete
12:1058 year old widower Peter McDonald was born and raised in Lancashire where he still lives today
12:29I'm a self-employed painting decorator
12:32in my spare time I like metal detecting when the weather's fine
12:37a couple of horse shoes and a couple of hinges I think I found it
12:40that Peter is a father of two and a grandfather of four hello darling give me love give me love
12:49are you my hand
12:51I'm proud to be a grandad I love it I really do
12:55are we waiting for it to beep
13:00go on then dig we're very close they all they all look after me yeah
13:05Peter was born Peter Stamp in 1966 he was less than six months old when his birth father placed
13:16him into care he was brought up by foster parents in the Preston area and had no idea about his family
13:24history my childhood was good never went without anything I found out I was fostered when I was seven
13:32years of age I always remember me sat sat on a rolled up carpet when they told me
13:42at the time it just went over me I was too young to understand
13:48he'd only really registered when I was 13 14
13:54I started to get curious and started asking a few questions but the answers weren't there for me really
13:59but then some new information emerged and I can't even remember who actually told me about it
14:10but there were some documents from from the social services
14:16with the name Trevor Stamp
14:20those documents referred to a boy a couple of years older than Peter with the same surname
14:25that could only mean one thing Peter had a brother called Trevor
14:33when I found out I had a brother and being at school
14:37and you know they had brothers and sisters it started to well where's mine it started to
14:44make me mind think well where's my brother
14:46in order to find his brother Trevor Peter decided to track down his birth father and in 1995
14:56he found him I was happy to have found him but there didn't seem to be any chemistry there at all
15:04Peter's father didn't know where Trevor was but he was able to tell Peter the story of how they were separated
15:11my father told me everything my mother was taking us to Preston railway station
15:27Trevor was about two and I was two and a half months old
15:31my mother was on the train with me and Trevor
15:34and my father had turned up and there was a bit of a argument
15:41as the train was leaving the station my father grabbed me off my mother because I was in her arms
15:51and the door was shut and that was it
15:56the train pulled away
15:57I've never seen my brother and or my mother again
16:10I do feel for me mother anybody taking a child off here would be very traumatic
16:16she'd have kept hold of me and he hadn't snatched me then everything would have been
16:21the way I wanted it to be with Trevor
16:27it's starting to get me now
16:40Peter McDonald is looking for the brother he was separated from when he was just a few months old
16:46well you know uncle Trevor that we're looking for do you want to draw a picture of him
16:52Trevor's been on in line for over 50 years
16:56as long as I can remember
17:00it's not professional here
17:03it's finding me be amazing
17:06I'd love to meet my family and they'd love to meet him
17:09thank you
17:10I'd like to say to Trevor hello
17:23I'm your brother
17:28when peter came to long lost family he knew his brother was called trevor stamp and he knew his
17:33date of birth our specialist researchers were able to find his birth certificate and discovered that
17:40his name was trevor edward stamp but when they searched for that name they couldn't find him anywhere
17:47they knew it was possible that his mother could have remarried meaning trevor might have been brought up with a different surname
17:54so we searched the electoral rolls across the country for any man of the right age called trevor with
18:00the middle initial e who was born in 1963
18:04that gave us three possible matches so we wrote to all of them asking if they'd been born with the surname stamp
18:13and one of them replied
18:16he revealed that his birth mother had died in 2008 but that he'd grown up knowing about a brother called peter
18:24and he was living in london where his birth mother had fled to all those years ago
18:42that day at the railway station changed the course of peter's life
18:47separating him from the brother he feels he should have grown up with i want to know what that day
18:52changed for trevor and how has his life been since
19:01trevor is a carpenter who lives with his partner in east london trevor how you doing
19:06doing young man yeah good to see you nice to meet you too not so young
19:13but listen um did you ever think this would happen no no knew about my brother yeah i've known about him
19:20since i was about nine ten years old so your mother she spoke about peter she didn't speak about him a
19:28great deal but when she did speak about him she often wondered how he was and that but mum always thought
19:36leaving where he is is probably better off there peter was seven years old when he found out that he
19:42was fostered and he was also told that he had a brother somewhere
19:49tell me if it were the circumstances of your separation from peter all those years ago
19:55mum just said we she was leaving to go to london and we we'd got on the train to get away from to get
20:03away from me dad but i know she must have been holding people up and i must have been standing
20:11behind her the train was pulling out he leaned in and pulled him through the window pull through the
20:16window pulling through the window that's why he couldn't get to me because i think that i was behind
20:20because he tried to get both of us and i do know she did say it happened as the train pulled off
20:26had to train that she pulled that's when he grabbed him so she had no chance to try and get him back
20:38that is awful it's like something you see on a film isn't it that must have been traumatic for your
20:46mother you could see it in her face when she spoke about it hurt her because you she always said she
20:53regretted it not going back for him when she got very ill she started to talk a lot more open up a
21:01lot more she did say to me find him look for him find him and then i think it was a week or so late she
21:11passed away oh my goodness me when you tell peter that
21:17yeah
21:25yeah
21:29so tell me about your life then after you left it was happy i mean mum mum was a very strict person
21:36money was tight it was hard and all that have you got any photos yes all right that's mum in her
21:44maybe 40s or 50s for him to see that is just something that will be one of the most amazing
21:53moments of his life good i wonder if he's anything like me be nice to know well he's a painter and
22:01decorator oh no paint and decorator okay that's nice to know what do you say he lived
22:10lancashire oh he's still in lancashire is he good lad do you want us your picture
22:15yes please he better not look like me
22:18you sure he's younger brother he looks older than me we don't look the same do we
22:33well
22:36oh pete
22:39nice to see you mate
22:40any chance i can keep that of course you can thank you it looks a lot like mum
22:52it's hit me quite a bit that this goes i'm doing this for him and for myself and for mum yeah
23:01i think she'd be proud of me to do that oh yeah i can't wait i really can't wait now
23:10until he came to long lost family lee sharp believed he was a foundling left with a stranger
23:26in a block of flats with no clues about his identity but now he knows that's not a true story
23:34he has a birth certificate with his mother's name on it
23:38and i'm on my way to give him another bit of news that will be life-changing
23:42he has a brother who actually knew their birth mother
23:53hi lee oh davina hi come through thank you nice to see you and you i'll shut the door
23:59thanks for seeing me today it's my pleasure how have you been i'm just trying to take it all in
24:09it's but i'm very happy your story to me felt so unique and different because you may have had
24:18these feelings of a foundling when you weren't one that's yeah i always thought to myself whatever
24:25happened the the thing i was always grateful for was that lady gave birth to me and that one day if
24:30i ever get to meet her or a sibling i'd love to find out the little missing pieces you know so i wanted
24:37to um come here today because um i actually have a bit of news for you first of all i want to say i'm
24:46afraid we haven't been able to trace your birth mother but we have been able to trace a relative
24:55um and we have traced your brother

26:13but then at two years old it was decided that your brother steven would go and live with his paternal
26:22grandparents so he stayed within the family oh well that's something
26:32i'm trying to sort of process the stuff with my mum now tell me tell me what are you trying to
26:37well because i'm wondering why she let me go and i completely forgive her for that
