00:00my father grabbed me off my mother because I was in her arms the train pulled away I've never seen
00:09my mother again out of the blue he just said I just want to make sure mom told you the family
00:18secret every year thousands of people come to us looking for missing family she's my sister she's
00:28loved and she needs to know that she's loved sometimes is to solve a mystery that's troubled
00:34them for decades I'm petrified I'm looking for her but I've just got to try or to end the torment of
00:43what they don't know any siblings any answers any anything be great so imagine the moment
00:52hi Alan hi Davina when the burning questions can finally be answered
00:59reuniting families who've spent a lifetime apart
01:09our first searcher has been on a mission to find her brother ever since she discovered the terrible
01:28way her mother was separated from him mom was 21 when she had Jeffrey he was born two years before
01:44myself she went home one day and he wasn't there my grandparents had the baby adopted I can't imagine
01:56the pain of that she carried that every single day
02:09that's really pretty 60 year old Jane Hadlow lives with her husband Alan
02:14what does that say Jeffrey wow together they have three children and four grandchildren
02:22I adore them and I want to spend every minute with them
02:26Jane grew up in Essex with her parents Kathleen and Jeff and two brothers Stephen and Jamie
02:34Jamie's come over to share some family photos
02:37that's mum and you such a lovely photo and that I remember mum wearing that and this caravan holidays it was a canary in the cage and mum one day decided that it would be probably nice to let it out for a bit of a fly about outside
02:58and it never came back I had a fantastic childhood we all knew that she absolutely adored us she just shone
03:09that's good one as well oh that's lovely isn't it but there was one night every year when Jane's mother Kathleen changed completely
03:19bonfire night my dad always used to take us out we were just super excited to see the fireworks with dad it was great but we'd always you know where's mum why's mum not coming
03:29I do remember not understanding why she wouldn't come out she wasn't her usual bright
03:36um bright self we'd come back and mum would be in the bedroom and we didn't really see her until the next day you could see that she had been upset and crying
03:44it wasn't until Jane was 19 that she discovered the reason behind her mother's sadness
03:51she just said to me one day I'm gonna need to tell you something you've got a brother his name is Geoffrey and I had him adopted well I didn't have him adopted he was adopted
04:03Geoffrey was born on the 6th of November 1962
04:08bonfire night was the night that would bring all those memories back now I understand why she was so upset that time of the year
04:17Jane's mum grew up in Liverpool today she's returning to the childhood home where 21 year old Kathleen lived when she discovered she was pregnant
04:28this is where it all began my grandparents were not happy at all about mum and being pregnant and not being married they were very strict Catholics so having a baby out of wedlock was shameful
04:53they sent her away to the Isle of Wight they were trying to hide it basically
05:00Kathleen spent the duration of her pregnancy miles away from family and friends but when it was time to have her baby she returned to Liverpool
05:08mum brought the baby home to this house I think she did have him for quite a few months she had that time to actually to bond with him
05:17after she had Geoffrey I think the pressure her parents probably put on her every single day
05:24we don't want a baby here don't another mouth to feed I think she fought it as hard as she possibly could
05:31she wasn't going to let him go but she came home one day and the baby wasn't there he was gone
05:39all they said to her was you don't need to worry he's been adopted
05:46when I look at the house I feel the pain that mum must have felt at that time
05:53in the years following Geoffrey's adoption Kathleen got married to Jane's father and built a family
06:07but she never forgot her firstborn son
06:10I still know that it hurt mum to the depths of her soul to let him go
06:15she carried it with her for the rest of her life
06:18in 1994 Kathleen sadly died of cancer aged 53
06:25one of the last things she spoke about was Geoffrey
06:28and she said Jane when I'm gone can you please find him for me
06:33can you please tell him what happened and tell him that I loved him
06:37and I didn't want to let him go
06:39she held my hand and she said please please make sure that you do it
06:44ever since her mother died over 30 years ago Jane has been desperately trying to find her brother
06:54but in 2011 she was forced to put her search on hold
06:59when I was 45 they diagnosed me with head and neck cancer
07:04I was having treatment for about a year and a half
07:08and yeah it changed the way I look but it also completely changed me as a person
07:17I can get it I can
07:19and the way that I live my life every day counts
07:25I just need to find my brother Geoffrey
07:30I want to know that he's had a happy upbringing
07:35that he had parents that loved him
07:38I don't want to miss that opportunity of being able to meet him
07:42and to look him in the eye and call him brother
07:45that would be wonderful
07:48before she came to us Jane had tried all she could to find her sibling
07:58but every search hit a dead end
08:01Jane knew from her mother that her brother had originally been given the name Geoffrey Lacey
08:07our specialist intermediaries wrote to the general register office to learn his new identity
08:13they discovered that his name had been changed to Andrew
08:16and that he'd been adopted by a family in the Lake District
08:20we tracked Andrew down to where he now lives
08:29we wrote to tell him he had a younger sister who was trying to find him
08:34Andrew works in insurance and has a teenage son
08:38I'm meeting him at the home he shares with his partner Daniela
08:42ahead of filming we told Andrew about his birth mother's death
08:47thanks a lot
08:49cheers
08:51it's going to be hard for Andrew to hear the heartbreaking way he was separated from his birth mother
08:58but there's good news
09:00a sister Jane and two brothers cannot wait to welcome him into their lives

09:55that's going to be great for
09:57Jane to hear
09:58that was that was why I never went looking
10:01it was that loyalty
10:02only the last few years I've talked to my sister about it
10:05is she adopted?
10:06no she's not
10:07our mum and dad is her biological mum and dad
10:12Jane has been searching for you with no luck for a long long time

10:26I have no idea we never talked about it
10:30your birth mother Kathleen was 20 when she became pregnant
10:34and her parents were really strict Catholics
10:38so the fact that she was pregnant was for them unacceptable and a matter of shame
10:45Jane thinks that your mum was with you for a matter of months
10:49and then she went out one day and came back and you were gone
10:58you've been taken for adoption
11:00I just can't imagine what that must have been like
11:05awful
11:10it was your mother Kathleen's last wish that you were found
11:16and told that you were loved
11:21wow
11:33there's Kathleen

12:59and celebrate you in her own quiet way
13:02on bonfire nights
13:03our dad would take us all out so she could spend the evening alone
13:07to think

13:48wow
13:49and they can't wait
13:51that's
14:01that's
14:02some news
14:10our next searcher was only 16 when he and his girlfriend had an unplanned pregnancy
14:15even though it's been nearly 50 years since his daughter was placed for adoption
14:19he has thought about her every day and wants to know where is she
14:28the last time I see Michelle was when she was nine days old
14:32she was taken on the tenth day
14:34I didn't get to say goodbye
14:36and get to say goodbye
14:42it was a sad day
14:46from that day on
14:47Kevin has been desperate to find his daughter
14:50and if I ever get the chance to meet Michelle then I could die a happy man
14:57Kevin Jordan is searching for the daughter he last saw nearly 50 years ago when she was only nine days old
15:03well after that
15:04well after that
15:05well after that
15:06well after that
15:07well after that
15:08well after that
15:10well after that
15:11well after that
15:13welcome to that
15:15nine days old a keen angler Kevin was born and raised in Royal Wooden Bassett
15:24where he still lives not far from his son will
15:30fishing is my biggest hobby everything goes out of your mind when you're
15:35fishing family it means a lot to me I try to be the best father I can Kevin was just a teenager
15:47when in 1973 he met his first love Jacqueline we dated almost straight away it was like love
15:56it for a sight almost you know I met Jackie in September and around January time I had a phone
16:06call from Jack telling me that she was pregnant Jackie was living at home with her parents they
16:17were angry and upset and I think it was decided by my mum and Jack's parents that we should have the
16:29baby adopted arrangements for their baby's adoption had already been made when in August 1974 Jackie
16:39gave birth to a daughter they named Michelle today Kevin is returning to the site where Michelle was
16:49born the hospital building has since been demolished this is where the maternity hospital was this is
16:58where Michelle was born she spent ten days in hospital I visited every day after work on my scooter I did get a few chances to hold her
17:14which was very special to me something I'll never forget
17:21the day Michelle was taken was heartbreaking for both me and Jack but we knew we couldn't keep her
17:33if there was any way we could have kept Michelle we would have done but there was no way we were ever
17:41going to support a baby at our wages you know very sad times
18:02there you are wrote in church
18:04uh-huh three years after Michelle's adoption in 1977 Kevin and Jackie got married your mum looked
18:14really nice that day sure she did she looked beautiful the couple went on to have three more
18:19children together including their daughter Charlene I can't actually remember being told about Michelle
18:25because as long as I can remember I've known about her we've always wanted to look for Michelle but I think
18:33Jack didn't think Michelle would ever forgive us because we continued his life and had three more
18:41children sadly in 2013 after a 14-month battle with cancer Jackie died she was taken too soon
18:54your mum always wished that Michelle would come looking for us it would have meant the world if she'd
18:59have knocked the devil one day I think it's just really important for her to know that she mum did love
19:07her that she was always wanted she was
19:15my little chicken
19:16who wants some cake oh yes please
19:22bit of lemon drizzle yeah enjoy enjoy thank you very much
19:27that's one of you five a day my dad
19:36this is lovely so thank you I'm just hoping for a good outcome on this search and I know how much it means
19:48to all of you Michelle she's always been in my thoughts I don't ask for a lot I've got everything
19:56I want the only thing missing is the girl the little girl we give away
20:06when Kevin came to us he knew that his daughter was originally called Michelle and that she was born in
20:12August but he didn't know the precise day so our intermediaries searched in the local authority
20:20registry office to try and locate her exact date of birth once they tracked this down they then
20:27applied to learn Michelle's adoptive name they discovered that she was now called Hillary and
20:32her adoptive parents brought her up just over an hour away from where her birth father lives
20:42it's so sad for Hillary that her birth mother Jackie is no longer here but I can tell her that her
21:01birth father has thought about her all these years and she has three full siblings
21:09Hillary has been informed ahead of filming that her birth mother has passed away
21:15Hillary hi Nicky come on in thank you
21:23it's great to meet you Hillary it's lovely to meet you too I'm so sorry that you were told the
21:33news that your birth mother has passed away yeah thank you it's that's obviously very sad it would
21:39have been lovely to have met her did you have a happy childhood I did I did yes I had two parents
21:45that were very loving very supportive but both my parents passed away when you were growing up did
21:52you think about your birth family yeah I don't think there's ever been a time where I didn't think about
21:57them and what they were up to your birth parents they were 16 yes they fell in love and within a few
22:05months Jackie realized that she was pregnant and of course all hell broke loose and she she actually
22:13phoned Kevin and said my parents are absolutely furious and they said that under no circumstances can
22:20you keep the child oh you're right yeah I have a tissue in my pocket and when Jackie was in hospital
22:33Kevin came on his scooter to visit every day he really took responsibility and it meant it meant so
22:42much to him oh gosh I'm so pleased that there was a lot of love between them as well oh there was yeah
22:48would you like to see a photo of them back then I would love to see a photo of them oh my goodness
22:57after you were born they stayed together
23:01and they got married
23:13mm-hmm I look so much like both of them they look so happy don't they and they were together
23:28until Jackie died oh my goodness I feel really sad I didn't get to meet her
23:37did they have any more children they did they did so I've got siblings three four siblings
23:47because your existence was always part of their family life you've you were never a secret oh my
24:03goodness Kevin was desperate throughout their marriage to find you and Jackie was too but she held
24:13back because she thought that the fact that they'd stayed together who was unforgivable and you would
24:21not have forgiven them for that oh my goodness that's really hard to to hear in some ways because
24:27I've thought about it for a long time and so to know that if I had been brave enough
24:38and I could have actually met her I can understand that that was not the right time now is the right
24:47time definitely you know I have got a photo of Kevin now more recently please oh look at him

25:54that makes me really sad

33:26there's somebody who is just a lovely person.
33:29She'd be so amazingly happy.
33:31She'd be just doing a happy dance-up. She always used to do so.
33:34Do a happy dance.
33:35Yeah, that's what she'll be doing.
33:36I'm a rubbish dancer.
33:38I'm not that great either.
33:40And do a dad dance, that's about it.
33:42She was a bit dippy, but then so am I.
33:45She had no sense of direction.
33:46And I'm certainly like that. I'm really terrible.
33:49I might have a few dippy jeans.
33:51Since the direction's not bad these days, but yeah.
33:54As soon as I walked into the room,
33:56I just knew instantly that he was a part of me.
33:59He was a part of our family.
34:01I've only had to wait till I'm 16.
34:04I've got a big brother.
34:05Yeah, I've got a big brother, no?
34:07Yeah, yeah.
34:08Yeah.
34:09It's just incredible.
34:10The connection is there and the instant warmth.

34:37Glad to find you.
34:38Yeah.
34:39They couldn't have made me feel more welcome if they tried.
34:43It was fantastic.
34:45This is amazing.
34:46My grandchildren wanted to make you a card and tell you about themselves.
34:51They're all to Geoffrey, because that's the name that we had.
34:53Properly, a lovely surprise, yeah.
34:56Thank you, thank you all, yeah.
34:58I feel like I've answered Mum's request,
