Staff at Strong's Fruit and Veg shop in Lytham. An engineer sent to probe a suspected gas leak at a greengrocers was shocked to discover the cause was the world's smelliest fruit.

00:00Hi, I'm Andrew Simpkins, owner of Strong's Green Drosses in Lytham, Lancashire.

00:11We're in the shop at the moment with our jury.

00:15A large box came, polystyrene box, sealed in Vietnam, sent to the UK.

00:20So we opened it outside and I took a lungful and believe me it's horrendous.

00:26We've got 16 packets in this box and I nearly threw up with the smell of it.

00:30But my Malaysian friends here, they rave over it, they crave it.

00:34Get us some durian, get us some durian.

00:37We put the durian outside on Tuesday, fresh from Vietnam, and there was a very strong smell.

00:42Blowing down the street. A customer went into the shop next door, told the lady there was a gas leak.

00:48She immediately rang the gas port.

00:50We sent an engineer with a sniffing machine, two police officers.

00:55They're trying the empty shops and the neighbouring shops, checking for a gas leak.

01:00When they came into here, the staff informed them that we don't have any gas.

01:04But it'd be the smell of the durian.

01:07And the engineer said, well, I've still got to check the properties.

01:09Check the property all over.

01:11Then I had a good lung full of the durian.

01:13And he said, oh yeah, that's definitely what it is.

01:15All right.

01:16We went to Florida,

01:40so anyway I have tried it today and at first I thought that's horrendous but then there's like

02:05an aftertaste almost like coconut that comes through it's not too bad it's nice actually I

02:11think if you got used to it and I recommend to freeze it and then eat it like an ice cream or

02:16like an ice cream yeah
