Transcript
00:00Fresh aid at this church in eastern Taiwan, now a temporary home to hundreds of residents
00:08affected by devastating flooding in Guangfu Township in La Hualian.
00:12There's enough food and water to last a few days,
00:15but some evacuees say they feel helpless about the state of their flooded homes.
00:30Most of the town has been cut off from water supply and gas.
01:00After Typhoon Ragusa brought torrential rains,
01:03causing a lake in the mountains above to overflow and pour down into the town below,
01:08killing at least 14 people as of Thursday.
01:12Chefs from Hualian City and other parts of the country are volunteering to cook warm food for the people here,
01:17even offering to hold their businesses until necessary.
01:20We have to gather all the food and dishes together.
01:26First responders from around the country have gathered here to help track down missing residents.
01:50As of Thursday, 22 are still unaccounted for,
01:54and they're scrambling to dig houses like this out of the mud.
01:57Now we're trying to try to find them out of the last 10-year-old people.
02:04We need to throw them out of the river inside, or let them sink in water.
02:08Because there's no water in the water.
02:11The water will allow too many people to find them, and it's not easy to find them.
02:15Meanwhile, President Lai Qingde and Defense Minister Wellington Koo have come to oversee recovery progress
02:22at the local water purification plant, which was also damaged by the overflowing river,
02:28as well as checking up on the soldiers stationed here to help with the cleanup.
02:32Rescue and recovery operations are still underway in Guangfu.
02:36As emergency teams and volunteers arrive, they work to bring hope to the community.
