The farmers Trailer of Truth arrives at the Halls Auction Centre, Shrewsbury, before heading to a big rally in Liverpool on Sunday during the Labour Party conference. Shropshire farmer Alan Hughes explains what it's all about.
Transcript
00:00Okay Alan, so we're here at the halls in Shrewsbury, the auction centre.
00:06And behind you is the trailer of truth, which is covered in comments about the problems
00:13that the farming industry is going through at the moment.
00:16Just explain what this is all about.
00:17This is about showing that farmers haven't stopped protesting, we've just been busying
00:22harvesting the food that is on your table all summer.
00:26And now with the Labour Party coming up, and the budget on IHT in October and November,
00:30we are here to show the level of support.
00:33This trailer, this banner has been up since Monday, this is only the third day of signatures
00:38on it, it's almost full.
00:39We have two more banners like this, completely full, and another one on the other side on
00:44it.
00:45It's showing that farmers and the public are backing British farming, and that we need
00:49to make fairer food prices for farmers and the public so that we can afford to feed you.
00:55Because at the moment, we can't.
00:56Yeah, I mean there are quite a lot of comments on there, so you know, a lot of strong feeling
01:01obviously.
01:03This is all towards the rally on Sunday, isn't it, in Liverpool, is that right?
01:07Yes, so we're in Liverpool, Sunday the 28th, at King's Dock Street on Wapping, where we're
01:12holding a rally on private site.
01:14We've got speakers from England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland to meet the three trailer truths.
01:20Scotland started in John O'Groats, the Welsh one started in Welshpool, and this one started
01:24in Cornwall and Devon.
01:25It's travelled all over the country, showing that we have not gone anywhere, and we are
01:30going to keep protesting to get fairer food prices for all of us, and IHT reassessed.
01:36Because we cannot afford to pay a tax when we only get 1% margin on our turnover.
01:44People will be paying a tax bill of twice their yearly margin before they even pay themselves
01:50a bill.
01:51We can't afford to do it.
01:52Yeah.
01:53How many people are you expecting on Sunday, do you think, for the rally?
01:55I think we're going to be pleasantly surprised, I think there'll be an awful lot. We've been
02:00putting it to just the farmers, but there's been several groups around the country sharing
02:03it.
02:04We've got the veterans coming, Rolling Thunder is speaking there, as well as farmers
02:08ourselves.
02:09So I think it'll be a very good day out, join us there from 1 o'clock when the trailers
02:13drive in.
02:14We aim to be finished by 4.35.
02:15There's obviously a huge feeling behind this, obviously, understandably. There's going to
02:23be probably thousands of people there, I would imagine. What difference do you really think
02:28it's going to make with the government? Do you think they're going to turn around and
02:32change policy?
02:33I think it'll make all the difference. We're having a lot of MPs from all the other parties
02:37supporting us, especially on the fairer food prices and making farming affordable and food
02:42affordable. Now, lots of politicians are speaking to us in private saying they support us, but
02:47they can't go against the whip. There's guaranteed to be another cabinet reshuffle in October,
02:53the way things are going. So now is the time for them to go against the whip, vote against
02:57the budget and support farmers and the general public to make them heard. The more people who
03:02are there supporting, the quicker we can get things changed around for the benefit of everybody
03:07in our nation.
