00:00Has the Netherlands banned Antifa?
00:06Posts circulating online are alleging that the Dutch government has banned Antifa.
00:11This umbrella term, which is short for anti-fascist,
00:14designates loosely affiliated far-left activists,
00:17as well as groups that oppose fascism and neo-Nazism.
00:21Antifa is more of an ideology than an actual organisation,
00:25although some of its supporters have embraced militant tactics.
00:28Following the assassination of right-wing activist and Trump supporter Charlie Kirk,
00:33the US president said he would designate Antifa as a major terrorist organisation
00:37as part of his efforts to target the radical left.
00:41We have seen a rise in violence perpetuated by Antifa radical people
00:48across this country who subscribe to this group.
00:51No links between the suspect Tyler Robinson and any other left-wing groups,
00:55including Antifa, have been uncovered to date.
00:58However, following Trump's declarations, Hungary followed suit,
01:01announcing that it would also ban Antifa and urging the EU to do the same,
01:06as detailed in a letter addressed to the European Union's foreign policy chief, Kaja Kallas.
01:12As for the Netherlands, online users are also claiming that the country's government has banned Antifa.
01:17Now, according to the Dutch Parliament's website,
01:20a motion on labelling Antifa as a terrorist organisation in the Netherlands was passed on the 18th of September,
01:27with 76 out of 150 votes.
01:30However, motions are just recommendations rather than legally binding decisions.
01:35Although Parliament can submit motions,
01:38the Netherlands government is not obliged to carry them out unless they are a motion of no confidence.
