Please Follow Me! Thank's for watching...
Transcript
00:00On sale this week, lot 19, 1982, Range Rover.
00:10It's kind of an off-roader, a powerhouse and a shopping car all in one isn't it?
00:17506, the KTM, it's a fair machine this, look at that.
00:22Reckon this is something your grandad would ride?
00:24Oh he loves a bit of enduro and motocross as grandad like.
00:27There we are, star of the show then, the 1997 Honda NSX.
00:31Do you have a sutter up? Yeah, yeah, please do.
00:35First time in a couple of years and there she goes.
00:37You're getting Ferrari starling with Honda reliability.
00:42What better could you get?
00:45The Matthewsons, a dynasty of classic car auctioneers.
00:5155. The joys of an auction.
00:53Most people will go to a sale with something in mind,
00:56we'd come away with something different.
00:58The fun is the chase.
00:59We'll have a look and we'll advise you from there.
01:01You just don't know what's on the end of the phone,
01:03what you're gonna find when you open them doors.
01:05This is a family's love affair with motors that have lived a life.
01:09Testing, testing.
01:10Most people will buy a car because they can relate to it,
01:14maybe a car that dad had.
01:15You're selling dreams.
01:16Right, here we go.
01:17Another week begins.
01:32And all is calm at classic car HQ.
01:35The well-oiled machine is just gliding along.
01:42Someone down there has been an absolute cock-up.
01:46Furring away.
01:51Nothing to see here.
01:53It's all fun.
01:54Someone got rolls and a Bentley mixed up.
01:57So anyway, it's all hands on deck.
02:00I bet you a pound at least one won't start.
02:09Just the 60 classics to shift.
02:12See, if they had just came to me first,
02:14none of this would have happened, would it?
02:17Having a nice, relaxing morning.
02:21Polishing a few bonnets.
02:24Then all of a sudden, it's a great big road.
02:30Anywhere you got it!
02:36You might think we set all this stuff up for your entertainment.
02:39Well, I'm being a shoeshine boy, you know.
02:42You've got to be careful with someone's foot between your legs.
02:44But other than that, I reckon I could do well.
02:47Truth is, you walk in, press the on button, and hey, presto.
02:52You've got a lovely tap.
02:53I've been to Greece for four days.
02:55Then I walk in the door and Charlie goes,
02:56all right, Mum, nice time.
02:57Yeah, lovely.
02:58I'm out of pants, if you could sort it.
03:00I only went for four days.
03:03I was getting worried.
03:04I thought I might have to start and wear Angie's, but anyway.
03:07Right, welcome home, Mum.
03:08We managed to scrape on by.
03:22That's lovely.
03:23In 400 metres, turn right onto Avenue du Berger.
03:27Um...
03:28Hmm.
03:29That wasn't the avenue that just shouted out of that map.
03:34We've been round here already once.
03:36So you haven't got your bearings?
03:37No, I haven't got my bearings.
03:38No, no, no, no.
03:39No, I've just seen that a minute ago.
03:43In the timeless words of Swansea's finest, Bonnie Tyler, I was lost in France.
03:49Genuinely the first time in France.
03:50Genuinely the first time in France.
03:51Yeah.
03:52Genuinely feel very lost.
03:55Yeah.
03:56That's it?
03:57Yeah.
03:58Fluent in French, Dave.
04:00Yeah, there you go.
04:01That's typical.
04:02French, that's what you do.
04:03Yeah.
04:04That's it.
04:05Yeah, 15 people on a quadcicle.
04:07Somehow, Dave has managed to send himself to Le Touquet, an elegant French resort, just a few miles from Pickering.
04:17The town was Ian Fleming's inspiration for Casino Royale, and 007 Mathewson is on a mission to track down a Bond villain of a car.
04:28As a child of the 1970s, I obviously had the classic supercar posters when the occasion arose in 2007.
04:36I went and bought one.
04:38Straight from the bedroom wall to Stephen Cable's garage, a Japanese classic.
04:47This is a Honda NSX, a Targa V6, hand-built.
04:53It was billed as the everyday supercar.
04:57It's an automatic, which is quite rare, and the interior in the brown colour is very rare indeed.
05:05They were designed by Ayrton Senna, and the handling is superb.
05:11The tyres on the rear are bigger than the ones on the front, and the engine is rear-mounted, and the combination of that means the handling is unsurpassable.
05:20So the everyday supercar, which you've not used everyday?
05:25Correct.
05:27For ten years.
05:28Made to take on Ferrari and styled with a little help from Ayrton Senna, the NSX was Honda's first bona fide supercar.
05:43The car could shift.
05:460-60 in 5 and a bit seconds, and a top speed of 168 miles per hour.
05:51Made this car ready to go bumper to bumper with the Europeans.
05:56The original NSX had the flash for less cash than a Ferrari, but with Honda reliability as standard.
06:02OK, it still costs £60,000 new, but then you were going to save a packet on garage bills.
06:10A beefed-up second-generation version was rolled out in 2015.
06:14Faster, punchier, but much less popular.
06:18Poor sales eventually saw Honda call time, and by 2022, the NSX story was over.
06:24Maybe.
06:34The purpose of the car was for me to drive from London to here in the summer, with the radio on, the roof off, and perfect my tan.
06:44And how are both of those going?
06:46Good, apart from the tan. As you can see, it's not a very good place for getting tanned, but never mind.
06:54I've gone electric now, so I drive faster, more modern cars.
07:05My basic Model 3 Tesla is faster than this.
07:09Is that the reason why this car is going now?
07:12I think it's the main reason. I won't go back to petrol cars anymore.
07:18Part of the Yorkshireman in me as well likes the way that electric cars don't require any maintenance.
07:25This is a dream car that you can use every day, and it's reliable, which is the best thing.
07:31But, no, it's time to move on.
07:33Back at base, Charlie's eye has been caught by a four-wheel drive classic from 1982.
07:50So, we have the old Range Rover 4-door, not a 2-door, which makes it a little bit less desirable.
08:01V8, I believe. I don't know whether it's 3.5 or 3.9.
08:05Yeah, silky smooth.
08:08Lovely old vehicle, and still usable, and they're so comfy.
08:14They are so comfy.
08:16They're just the same as the Roses are regarded as a magic carpet.
08:21These are the same, apart from their four-wheel drive in there too.
08:23They're just lovely. They're really, really nice.
08:25Super, super comfy.
08:33And V8, it's just brilliant, aren't they, really?
08:38And it's manual as well, which, for me, makes it even better.
08:40To be honest with you, your new Range Rovers don't do a lot for me.
08:44Oh, them electrics, innit? They're just a bit much for me.
08:47And it's more the point of when they go wrong.
08:50It's like, ching, ching, ching.
08:53In an ideal world, I'd like to drive one of my Land Rovers,
08:55but that ain't gonna work really, is it?
08:57Seventeen, being insured on a 2.5-litre diesel,
08:59it probably ain't gonna work.
09:01Nothing else that was made really looked like them, did they?
09:05It's kind of an off-roader, a powerhouse,
09:08and a shopping car all in one, innit?
09:13This was so revolutionary.
09:15It was just, yeah, just unbelievable, really.
09:18It's gonna do...
09:21being a four-door,
09:23somewhere either side of ten grand.
09:26But that is a guess.
09:28A very big guess.
09:29But, yeah, somewhere there, I would have thought.
09:31Somewhere either side of ten.
09:38What?
09:50Sacre-bloom.
09:51How old the 2K?
09:52They've researched a maison with a grand garage.
09:56You could be driving down, you know, a normal road,
10:00and you look to your left and your right,
10:01and then you see a tree-lined avenue,
10:03and you think, that looks really nice down there.
10:06Set sur un avenue bordé des arbres.
10:10All these avenues are tree-lined.
10:13So, I'm in heaven, really.
10:16If you can find, Steve.
10:17Yeah, if we find.
10:18Hopefully you're going back with a car on the back.
10:19Let's hope so.
10:21Yeah, that's the general idea.
10:26So, this is one of the few cars that will not have a lot to build.
10:31Well, they're not on every street corner, are they, in all fairness?
10:33No.
10:34They're normally tucked away in garages in France.
10:37And here we are.
10:38Hey, mate, are you all right?
10:40It must be Steve and I said...
10:42Very nice to meet you.
10:43Nice to meet you.
10:44Well done.
10:45And there she is, eh?
10:46There she is.
10:47Yeah.
10:49Obviously, we've never dealt with one.
10:50Haven't you?
10:51No, we haven't.
10:52No, no, no, no, no.
10:53Oh, I thought you would have seen loads over the years.
10:55No.
10:56No, no, we've never handled one.
10:57Yeah.
10:58No, never handled one.
10:59I had a lovely few years driving backwards and forwards
11:02when the children were really young.
11:03Yeah, yeah.
11:04And then, over the time, we lived right in the middle of London
11:07with nowhere to park it, and it just became a sort of pain.
11:10Bit of an albatross, yeah.
11:11Yeah, and I've gone electric, as you can see, so I've got all these...
11:13I know, I've heard of all these Teslas now.
11:15I've heard.
11:16I'm going off you.
11:21So, this is not running quite a while.
11:26We'll see in a minute, won't we, if it runs...
11:28But it's a Honda on it, doesn't it?
11:30Ah, well, we've been there, haven't we?
11:38Do you want me to start her up?
11:39Yeah, yeah, please do.
11:44That's a Honda for you.
11:48First time in a couple of years, and there she goes.
11:51Ah, there you go.
11:52Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
11:53There you go.
11:54When was the last time they popped up as well then?
11:56Yeah, many years ago.
11:58Yeah, what a shame that it's been off the road for a while, because it'd be nice to drive, wouldn't it?
12:08But then having said that, before you drive it in anger, you're going to have to put a cam belt on, aren't you really?
12:13I mean, I know we've started it and we've moved it out of the garage, that's one thing, isn't it?
12:17You know, but if it was a £2,000 Honda, you just, you know, you just jump in here.
12:22But obviously when you're looking at a £40,000, £50,000 car, you don't really want to just wing it, do you really?
12:29Is that what we're talking, money-wise?
12:31Yeah.
12:32I don't know what to do when we get back, I'm sat here thinking, do we clean it, do we not?
12:40Don't know.
12:42I'll think about that on the way home.
12:45I'm leaning towards cleaning it.
12:48I am.
12:50I think.
12:52Possibly.
12:53Maybe.
13:01Worth the trip.
13:10Yeah, lovely car.
13:12In a lovely location.
13:15So all you've got to do now is learn the lingo.
13:19Yeah.
13:21Can't see that taking long, can you?
13:22Right, smash it mate, thank you ever so much.
13:32Lovely to meet you.
13:33Thank you very much for your hospitality and hopefully we'll see if you come over in November.
13:35That would be so kind.
13:36Fantastic.
13:37Thank you very much.
13:38Thanks, Stephen.
13:39Nice to see you.
13:40See you later.
13:42Take care.
13:52Auction Week is here and the browsers are cock-a-hoop.
13:57I'm in paradise.
13:59Absolutely.
14:00These cars are fantastic now.
14:03Why Ford?
14:04What do you love about them?
14:05Just fast and sporty and, you know, good-looking.
14:10Speed.
14:13You have to set yourself a limit.
14:14A limit, yeah.
14:15And you might have to go one bit over your limit.
14:18It just depends who else is in the battle.
14:22But then you walk away from it and you have to do that.
14:27Away we go then.
14:28£2,000 away.
14:29£2,000 we've got there.
14:30£2,000, £2,000.
14:31Do what?
14:32Four, five, four, six.
14:33Go on, Andy.
14:34Go on, Andy.
14:36We all done.
14:37I'm going to sell.
14:38I'm going to drop it.
14:39Five.
14:4085.
14:41The Trotters Independent Traders.
14:43He's Trigger.
14:44He's Rodney.
14:45Four, seven.
14:46Five, six.
14:47Five, seven.
14:48Five, eight.
14:49Five, nine.
14:50500.
14:51For the nicest R32 you're going to find.
14:5227.
14:5327.
14:5428 now.
14:5528.
14:56Third and last time, fair warning.
15:01Let me just have a quick mouthful of tea, those gentlemen.
15:04Auctions work, don't they, when there's more than one person.
15:07In an ideal world, you want two or three, three or four people bidding.
15:12And then all of a sudden, the increments happen naturally, don't they?
15:16It's a doddle.
15:17£1,000.
15:18Come on, seven.
15:20£7,000.
15:21What a proper car that is.
15:23An auction, like most other things, is really what you make it.
15:26You need a good content, you know, a reasonable customer base.
15:30And the rest of it, you've got to work hard at.
15:32Start me on it.
15:33Where are we then?
15:3416, 17, 18, 18, 19, two grand.
15:37Only got to open the door, it started, that car, you know.
15:39Unbelievable it was.
15:402,600.
15:4126.
15:42Well done.
15:43Cheap car.
15:44It's a bit of an act, to be truthful, isn't it, you know.
15:47This is the stage, and I'm on stage, aren't I, really.
15:51But you've got to make it look not like an act, I suppose, really.
15:54Lot 19, 1982, Range Rover.
16:01Nice early Range Rover.
16:04Straight old car.
16:05Don't see too many of these now.
16:0715, 16, 17, 17, 17, 5, 17, 5, 17, 500.
16:14Oh, to come by now, like this, 17, 500.
16:18Here's the rating.
16:19Are you all done then?
16:2017, 500 only, 17, 5.
16:28It's a real shame.
16:29Lovely car, would normally have done good money,
16:31and this time it hasn't.
16:33And that's the joy of an auction, isn't it, that if you set a reserve
16:35and it doesn't meet the reserve, then actually, no, thanks very much.
16:38I don't want to do a deal on it, and I'll have it back.
16:41And the car goes home.
16:52We're off to Smedic, which is Birmingham, apparently.
16:56I must have been there, but I can't remember when.
16:59And we're going to have a little tour around the Mammod factory,
17:04the engineering works that produce the little steam-powered models.
17:09Been going for, I don't know, 80 years or something or more.
17:13And it's just amazing that they're still producing these models,
17:16and virtually the same models, and still send them throughout the world.
17:19It's just absolutely amazing.
17:20And the bonus side of it all is that I'm picking up, I think,
17:23four or five motorbikes, so that's the plus side of it.
17:26I've got my co-driver with me there, so if I get tired, she can take over.
17:31She's only learning now.
17:33So, yeah, job will be good. I'm looking forward to it.
17:35This is a 1929 Model 9 Sunbeam 500.
17:52Basically, we've rebuilt it completely.
17:54Absolutely everything's done on the bike.
17:56The engine has been stripped down.
17:58The valves have been re-ground.
18:00When you actually start working on them, you can see the engineering
18:03and the thought that's gone into them.
18:05It's incredible. Absolutely incredible.
18:07Despite all this loving appreciation,
18:09vintage bike fanatic Martin Adams is having a clear out.
18:13Sunbeams were phenomenal bikes of their era.
18:17Possibly even the Vincent of their day.
18:19They were that good.
18:21Here we've got the Triumph TR7, but the actual model name is also Tiger 750.
18:31It's just a lovely, lovely thing.
18:34It's 45 horsepower, so it's got more than enough power for an old bike.
18:38You know, she'll cruise happily at 70 miles an hour.
18:41The purchaser of this bike is going to get a really good bargain here
18:44because they don't have the same value as a Bonneville.
18:49This is a 1930 Coventry Eagle Model F24.
18:54It's a lightweight bike, very, very rideable.
18:59Machines and machinery are in Martin's blood.
19:05My father bought a small precision engineering company in Huddersfield in 1973,
19:10so engineering started for me when I was 12.
19:14Besides bikes, Martin has a passion for model steam engines.
19:18So much so that he bought the famed company that makes them.
19:23My first introduction to Mammod, I believe I was about five years old
19:27and I nearly set my uncle's thatched barn on fire
19:32by spraying methylated spirits onto the burner while it was burning.
19:36If we hadn't have got the fire out, it would have cost a fortune.
19:39Luckily, Mammod are completely different to that nowadays.
19:42We use a completely different type of fuel.
19:49My late midlife crisis was in my late 50s,
19:53so I ended up buying this.
19:56And I thought, well, it would be fun to have one again,
19:59but quite quickly after riding it, I realised that no, no, no, no.
20:04Age has won. I've survived this bike.
20:07I mean, it's still intact.
20:09So once she's gone, there won't be any more KTM's.
20:12Tucked away in a factory on the outskirts of Birmingham,
20:14and Martin Adams' classic British bikes.
20:16I'll be all right parked there for a minute or two, won't I?
20:19Absolutely.
20:20The bikes are just a pretense.
20:21What Derek's really after is getting up close to these shiny toys.
20:24Great, isn't it?
20:25Great, isn't it?
20:26Great, isn't it?
20:27Yeah.
20:28Yeah.
20:29They're everywhere.
20:30The finished article.
20:31Ah, brilliant.
20:32Coventry Eagle, that's a lovely little bike.
20:33F24, 200cc.
20:34Yeah.
20:35Yeah.
20:36Everything's done on it, Derek.
20:37We've done everything.
20:38She's running OK, then.
20:39It's absolutely running fine.
20:40Nearly there.
20:41It's absolutely running fine.
20:42Nearly there.
20:43Is she on the way?
20:44Is she flooded, mate?
20:45Probably.
20:46Try that, yeah.
20:46Yeah.
20:47Hope your bike is really fine.
20:49It's got a vehicle.
20:51Look at that bike are just a pretense.
20:51What Derek's really after is getting up close to these shiny toys.
20:55Great, isn't it?
20:56That they're everywhere?
20:57Yeah.
20:58The finished article.
20:59Ah, brilliant.
21:00Coventry Eagle, that's a lovely little bike.
21:02F24, 200cc.
21:03Everything's done on it, Derek.
21:04We've done everything.
21:05She's running OK then?
21:06She's absolutely running fine.
21:07Meaning.
21:08Is she flooded, mate?
21:10Probably.
21:10Try that, yeah.
21:13Sounds lovely, doesn't it?
21:17What else have we got here, the Sunbeam?
21:20The Sunbeam, yes.
21:21Is she a 500, this one?
21:23Yes, 500.
21:24Yes, nice, isn't it?
21:25We've been through absolutely everything on it,
21:27so from wheel bearings, tyres, everything's done on it.
21:31Super thing, isn't it? I love hand change.
21:33Yes, oh, yeah.
21:34And girder forks.
21:35I love to see the girder forks going down the road like this,
21:37you know, absorbing the bumps.
21:39It mesmerises me.
21:41Then you've got a biggie.
21:42Ah, well, this, the Tiger 750, TR7, five-speed, 1975.
21:48We've done everything, forks all the way through it,
21:50new tyres, the whole blooming lot.
21:52This is far easier than a Bonneville to live with.
21:55Without a doubt, yeah.
21:56Nice, usable bike.
21:57Yes, absolutely, absolutely.
22:02Bikes aside, Derek's been itching to have a look around the factory.
22:06Can you imagine the work going in that front, eh?
22:09So this is one of our newer models.
22:11Feel the weight map.
22:13Oh, wow.
22:14Oh, that's substantial, isn't it?
22:15This must be the heaviest model you've made.
22:17Yeah, and probably one of the most expensive ones.
22:19What would that retail for?
22:20Around about the 900-pound mark.
22:22The standard steamroll, I think we've made three quarters of a million of them.
22:26Over what we can see in the records, two and a half million models have been made.
22:29Wow.
22:30How about that?
22:31And then we jiggle it.
22:32Are you putting all four in here?
22:33Yeah, we're going to put all four in, mate.
22:34Yeah.
22:35I've got a piece of sponge.
22:36You need one?
22:37It comes out of Martin's pocket.
22:38Thank you ever so much for your hospitality.
22:39It's been actually brilliant.
22:40And the sandwiches.
22:41Yeah.
22:42And I've got some with me.
22:43I've got some in the cab to eat on the way home.
22:44How about that?
22:45Not many people do that for me.
22:46So what could be better?
22:47Everything from now is down here, wasn't it?
22:48I've got a piece of sponge.
22:49I've got a piece of sponge.
22:50Do you need one?
22:51It comes out of Martin's pocket.
22:52Thank you ever so much for your hospitality.
22:56It's been actually brilliant.
22:57And the sandwiches.
22:58Yeah.
22:59And I've got some with me.
23:00I've got some in the cab to eat on the way home.
23:01How about that?
23:02Not many people do that for me.
23:03So what could be better?
23:04Everything from now is down here, wasn't it?
23:08Yeah.
23:09Yeah.
23:10Yeah.
23:11Yeah.
23:12Yeah.
23:13Everything from now is down here, wasn't it?
23:15I mean, if I could go around Vauxhall Motors, it wouldn't be as good as that, would it?
23:18Safe journey.
23:19And you, mate.
23:20And you.
23:21Good show.
23:22Nice to see you, mate.
23:35It's another busy auction week at Pickering HQ, but there's only one thing on everybody's
23:41minds.
23:42Has anybody seen Dave at all?
23:44Is he collecting a car or is he on his jollies?
23:53Definitely not having French lessons.
23:54We hear his French every morning.
23:56Might be sad to see him.
23:57Could have gone on to the beach.
23:59It's a little holiday.
24:01Fighting with a collection.
24:02He's milking life out of it.
24:03That's what he's doing.
24:04And voila.
24:05I was just staring a few nice days away.
24:14Just so happened that we bumped into Stephen and picked up a lovely Honda NSX at the same
24:19time.
24:20So there she is, bless her, repatriated back into the UK.
24:24It's a bit dirty, isn't it?
24:26Oh, sorry.
24:27Yeah, yeah, yeah.
24:28This may or may not make sense to everybody, but it's not dirty enough.
24:33It's that sort of been parked in a reasonable garage for a year or two look.
24:40It's not been parked in a barn for 10 years look, is it?
24:43So it's not one thing nor the other.
24:46So I think we're going to clean it.
24:52You've got a bit of effort to get it.
24:53I have.
24:54Only because I wanted a holiday in France.
25:01You're going back to this age of production for a reason.
25:04To get a lot more fuel when you're driving a car.
25:07If it was manual, I think the customer base would be this big.
25:11It's auto.
25:12I think that's going to shrink it down.
25:14If it was manual, we'd be starting with a five.
25:17Because it's not, I think we'll be starting with a four.
25:30The bike shed is fairly bulging at the seams,
25:33with new lots arriving all the time.
25:37From the shiny...
25:38The first one I've ever seen like this.
25:40...to the shoddy.
25:42It's bits off an LA Velocet.
25:44We've crashed already.
25:45Hang on, we've got no brakes.
25:47Back just ahead of the next auction,
25:49are the bikes Derek picked up in Birmingham.
25:52Pick of the bunch, according to Jack,
25:54is the KTM Scramble bike.
25:57You can't have so much more than that, can you?
26:06One's carpet cleaning, really, and some fresh fuel.
26:08Oh, she sounds good, she sounds all right.
26:14I ain't had a proper look round it, you know, fork seals and bits and pieces.
26:17They all look good.
26:18There's no residue or anything there.
26:20Whether I want bearings in the bottom arms and stuff, I don't know.
26:23In them linkages.
26:25She's going to want to freshen up, I'm sure.
26:27It's amazing, this is actually kept as it is,
26:30because let's face it, you know,
26:32we all ragged the life out of them as soon as you got them, don't you?
26:34So it's actually kept very well.
26:36Yeah, knowing it'll clean up even better.
26:38Another great fun.
26:39Great fun.
26:40I've had plenty of fun on mine.
26:41Do you reckon this is something your grandad would ride?
26:43Oh, he loves a bit of enduro and motocross as grandad like.
26:46Yeah, it's a secret hobby other than ping pong.
26:52I wouldn't be bothered if I had 15, 16, 17 hundred pounds in it.
26:56No, spot on.
26:57But no, in general, it gives the impression you can jump on it now
27:00and go and play in the field and not worry about a great deal.
27:03So you can't ask for much more than that, can you?
27:06Not really.
27:07506, the KTM.
27:14250 KTM.
27:15It's a fair machine.
27:16This, look at that.
27:17Fair machine.
27:1815 then, I see.
27:1916.
27:2017.
27:2118 hundred then.
27:2218 hundred pound then for the big KTM.
27:2418 hundred pound then we are done at that.
27:2718.
27:2818 hundred pound.
27:29He's looking for more.
27:30You'll have to have a quick word with the office on that one.
27:33No sale on the day.
27:34But the bike zipped off for 1,400 at a later auction.
27:384-4 here with me.
27:404,400.
27:414-4 was enough to bag the Triumph Tiger.
27:456,500 pounds.
27:47Vendor was looking for a chunk more.
27:49The Sunbeam didn't sell and went back to Birmingham.
27:521,900 down to mark.
27:55And the Coventry Eagle was snapped up for a bargain 1,900 pounds.
28:00There's cars from Italy, Germany, Sweden and the States for sale in the auction round the corner.
28:13But Dave is still on a French kick and eyeing up a good looking Citroen DS that's had its roof cut off.
28:21It is actually quite a nice car but it's not a genuine soft top car.
28:28But then a genuine soft top car is big money.
28:32If it fell into the category of what we would regard here as a proper car, nice thing.
28:38You know, very little in the way of restoration.
28:40You know, 95% genuine.
28:43Then you burst through 100,000.
28:45So in comparison to that, you know, 50, 60, sort of half price.
28:53The Citroen DS was designed by a sculptor in collaboration with an aero engineer.
29:04Innovative, futuristic, oh so French.
29:07Its beauty recognised in a pole that put it third in the car of the last century category.
29:14The convertible version of the DS was the dream child of the renowned Parisian coat builder Henri Chaperon,
29:21who was commissioned by Citroen to make the DS des Copatables.
29:26The decapitated car was stunning.
29:29It was massively strengthened in the middle, very expensive to make.
29:33And in 11 years of production, Citroen made just 1,300 of them.
29:37It's thought only six factory right hand drive models remain.
29:41So they're worth a small fortune.
29:44That means a saloon well made into a convertible is an option.
29:47But be very careful.
29:49It's not as simple as just chopping the roof off.
29:58The trouble is, when they're not exactly what they should be,
30:02when they don't tick every box,
30:04you've got some hurdles to get over really, you know.
30:07And sometimes the fact that it's half the price of a genuine one,
30:11you would think, when you're talking these figures,
30:13you would think would do it, wouldn't you?
30:14But sometimes even that still isn't enough.
30:16So if it started life as a saloon car,
30:19and now has been, you know, converted into a roadster,
30:22that's where your loss is.
30:24But, pretty car.
30:26Very pretty.
30:271972, Citroen DS.
30:36Oh, what a machine.
30:38There we go.
30:39What a lovely creation this has been.
30:41Where are we going to go with this one?
30:42You tell me.
30:43I can't start much lower than 40k though, Will.
30:46I'll go a little bit lower.
30:47I'll go maybe 38k.
30:49But I can't start much lower than that.
30:5138k, probably the cheapest in the universe.
30:54But 38k, look at that.
30:57I think that's extremely good value for money.
30:59But, no, I can't pull rabbits out of hats, as I say.
31:03So if you've got some interest in that,
31:04you'd have to have a word with the team in the office,
31:06but thank you anyway.
31:09And that is what happened.
31:11A deal was done,
31:12and the very stylish, decapitated DS was on its way.
31:16You know when things are unusual,
31:19and that sometimes makes them very saleable,
31:22or not saleable at all.
31:24You know, when you're asking that sort of money,
31:26and then, well, it'll need some recommissioning,
31:28and like, so, well, it did drive here,
31:31but, you know, there's those things that
31:33do make you worry, don't they?
31:35You're calling him absence.
31:36He's on the restroom, I'm afraid.
31:37We have an auction today.
31:38Can I help?
31:39The troops are gathered for another busy one.
31:40Hello Matthewsons.
31:41Cheers mate.
31:42Bye bye.
31:43Bye bye.
31:44Bye bye.
31:45Paul, do you fancy being helpful?
31:46I'm always helpful.
31:47Always helpful.
31:48Always.
31:49I might need you to do a telephone bid on this Honda NSX please.
31:51I'm very busy right now.
31:52I am.
31:53Well, free yourself.
31:54I am.
31:55I am.
31:56I am.
31:57I am.
31:58I am.
31:59You're calling him absence.
32:00He's on the restroom, I'm afraid.
32:01We have an auction today.
32:02Can I help?
32:03The troops are gathered for another busy one.
32:06Hello Matthewsons.
32:07Cheers mate.
32:08Bye bye.
32:09Bye bye.
32:10Paul, do you fancy being helpful?
32:12I'm always helpful.
32:13Always.
32:14I might need you to do a telephone bid on this Honda NSX please.
32:17I'm very busy right now.
32:19I am.
32:20But free yourself up for lunch time then.
32:24Star of this auction, the 28 year old Honda, is catching some admiring glances.
32:30I've got no clue what they'd be going for these days.
32:32This is going to be the one I think is out of my price bracket and then it goes and I go,
32:37damn I should have bought it.
32:40It's a nice looking car isn't it?
32:42Red brake calipers.
32:43Look at the red brake calipers.
32:45Oh yes.
32:47I must admit when I heard about it I thought, oh seems to be a long way to go for a Honda
32:53NSX.
32:54But this is just something else.
32:55Oh isn't it lovely.
32:57I think it would be fair to say they are the cream of the crop as far as the Japanese
33:01cars go.
33:02They've made it so beautifully.
33:04Everything fits.
33:05Look at the shut lines.
33:06Just perfect.
33:07All the way down.
33:08Just absolutely bang on.
33:11Other than Aston Martin, Rolls Royce.
33:14I can't think of another, I can't think of a British firm that would compete to that.
33:20I think it's great.
33:21I think it's, I mean I can understand I'm putting the Honda on the front there, the
33:24Honda badge which is obviously, they're proud of it so whack it on.
33:27I don't know what it's got on the back.
33:29Ooh.
33:30Wow.
33:31There you go.
33:32Look at that.
33:34Nothing on the back.
33:35Just another Honda insignia.
33:37So when whoever's following that, looking at it and thinking what is it, and then they
33:41realise obviously it's a Honda, but what model is it?
33:44Don't give the game away, does it?
33:47How clever that was.
33:48I'm so clever it frightens me sometimes, you know.
33:51I'd have thought of that.
33:52I maybe thought of that before then.
33:53Fantastic.
33:54Going to make a lot of money.
33:57They tell me it could make 50 grand.
33:59It's a lot of money for a Honda, isn't it?
34:01To sum it up, really, is that you're getting Ferrari styling with Honda reliability.
34:09What better could you get?
34:17There we are.
34:18The start of the show then.
34:19The 1997 Honda NSX.
34:21Right.
34:22Here we go then.
34:23£37,000 on the telephones at 37.
34:2538,000.
34:2639.
34:2739.
34:2839.
34:2942.
34:30You all right with that?
34:3142,000 says Mark.
34:3345,000.
34:3445 and us.
34:3545,000 and a half.
34:37Just beat you in.
34:38Just beat you in.
34:3945 and a half.
34:4045 and a half.
34:4146.
34:4246 with us.
34:4346.
34:4446 and a half.
34:45She's in again.
34:46Are you out?
34:4746 and a half.
34:48She's in.
34:49Yep.
34:50Okay then.
34:51Not for long.
34:5247 is Alan.
34:53One of them.
34:54All the visitors dropped out, so...
34:55Just two of us now.
34:5648 and a half.
34:5748 and a half.
34:58Jill's back in at 48 and a half.
35:00Is that a half, Alan?
35:0149's just gone.
35:0249 and a half is Alan.
35:03And I'll do 50.
35:0449 and five.
35:05I'll do 50.
35:0650.
35:0750 says Jill.
35:0850,000 pounds.
35:09And a half.
35:1050,500.
35:1151.
35:1251.
35:13Yeah, she's come back again.
35:1451.
35:15We've got with Jill at 51.
35:16And a half.
35:1751 and a half.
35:18Take a 750.
35:1951,750.
35:2051,750.
35:2151,750.
35:2251,750 is with Jill.
35:2452.
35:2552.
35:2652.
35:2752,250.
35:28It's only 250.
35:29It's only 250.
35:30It's only 250 quid.
35:31It's only 250.
35:32Forget the 52.
35:33You can earn that in an afternoon.
35:34Come on.
35:3552,000 pounds.
35:36You comfortable, Alan, with that?
35:3752,000 pounds.
35:3852,000 pounds.
35:3952,000 pounds.
35:4052,000 pounds.
35:41Get it down.
35:42Get it down.
35:43On the phones at 52.
35:45Yep.
35:46Congratulations.
35:47This is yours.
35:48Round of applause as well.
35:50How's your blood pressure?
35:5252,000 pounds.
35:53Yeah.
35:54All right.
35:55Thanks very much, Matthew.
35:56Okay.
35:58Bye-bye.
35:59Gosh.
36:00Right.
36:01Can I go and have a sit down now?
36:11I fancied something French.
36:13And I'd not seen this one until maybe a week before the auction.
36:17Walked into the second building and there it was in the middle.
36:21And it was just a wow moment.
36:23Oh my gosh.
36:25The car with the wow factor was the 1972 Citroen DS convertible.
36:32It's like a piece of jewelry.
36:34It was just shining and sparkly.
36:37And just, it was just asking me to take it home.
36:42New owner, Elliot Burley, did take the car home.
36:46Had a bit of bother with the engine.
36:48And it's wound up here in Barnard with specialist DS restorer, Jamie Piggott.
36:54We've pulled it apart and found the minor engine problem has been quite an interesting find.
37:01What's the minor engine problem?
37:03It's dropped a valve and gone kaput.
37:06Or kablooey.
37:07Or kablam.
37:09It's knackered.
37:10It's knackered.
37:11Bad things have happened to the engine.
37:13Possibly head gasket's gone this particular year that the engine is, not the car.
37:18And they've got sodium filled exhaust valves.
37:21It's this little thing here, which really shouldn't be there.
37:24Water coming into the engine.
37:26It cools the valve head and it can't take the difference in temperature.
37:29Just cracks, drops off straight into the combustion chamber.
37:33Probably made a horrific noise until it's eventually split the piston.
37:38So the engine is actually technically seized.
37:49Hey.
37:50Hello.
37:51Oh, it's nice to meet you at last.
37:53Finally.
37:54How are you doing?
37:55That's not mine, is it?
37:56It is.
37:57Oh my God.
37:58But it's not that bad.
37:59Oh wow.
38:00We got to the bottom of what your little mystery noise was.
38:05Wow.
38:06It's the valve.
38:07Right.
38:08The valve has dropped and that's been clattering up and down.
38:10And it's actually cracked the piston across there.
38:13Oh wow.
38:14Loads of other things, like these are the cam followers, and they're absolutely knackered.
38:19Evidence that the engine itself is quite high mileage.
38:22So the car doesn't look like it's done hundreds of thousands of miles though, does it?
38:27The car's 60-year-old.
38:29Mm-hmm.
38:30The engine could have been rebuilt twice, the car's been rebuilt three or four times.
38:34So this was going to happen anyway, no matter what?
38:37Erm, that's incredibly unlucky.
38:46I've currently got two Rolls-Royces, a 1956 Cloud and a late year 2000 Corniche 5.
38:55I sent that off last year to have the bodywork done.
39:00Now all of a sudden I've got another hefty bill that I didn't see coming with this one.
39:05Erm, so I've got two swanky cars both off the road at the same time and I'm driving round in a two grand Rover 400.
39:14This car was at the NEC, so I managed to get it to the NEC to the Classic Car Show and it was on the GCCG stand.
39:23Caused loads of interest, lots of people came to look at it and it's really interesting when you stood next to the car listening to what other people say.
39:32The GCCG is the gay classic car group. We've currently got 1,400 members in the UK.
39:39We're doing a Euro tour to Germany where all the other gay classic car clubs from around Europe will be meeting in Germany next year.
39:48It was our turn last year and I would like to think that car will make it to Germany.
39:53Either driving or on the back of a trailer, we'll see, but that's the plan, to take it to Germany in May.
40:00Time-wise, it's ready when it's ready.
40:06It needs to be perfect and you've got to promise me it will never break down again.
40:09Yeah.
40:10OK.
40:11Honest.
40:12I feel passionately about this car. It's the first car that I really think I want to own forever.
40:19And that's the car I intend to be buried in.
40:22With my tiara, yeah, absolutely. I'll be buried in that car with a tiara.
40:29I was just going through the auction catalogue online one day, looking at all the cars, and I came across this.
40:46I thought, oh, wow. I'm interested.
40:50John Mildred was interested enough to pay what it took to win the Honda NSX.
40:58Listen to that. That's lovely. Today's the first time I've heard the engine running.
41:10I've never driven one. The first time I even sat in one was at the auction house.
41:16I think maybe I should ask Tom if I can just drive it down to 100 yards.
41:22Handling the recommissioning is ex-RAF mechanic Tom Haywood. Since swapping planes for cars, he's become one of the country's top NSX specialists.
41:32When I first saw it, it was either going to be in poor shape or great shape.
41:39It's actually in incredibly good condition today. It's been stood for such a long time.
41:44If you have a look at the door card, you'll see because it's obviously been stored, there's a little bit of mould setting.
41:49Oh, yeah. Yeah, it is rather mouldy.
41:51Yeah, which is not a problem. So the whole car will be getting deep cleaned anyway.
41:55The seat is still in quite good condition, actually.
41:57Yeah, actually, I could imagine the leather's pretty dry at the moment.
42:00Yeah, it does feel...
42:02Like I say, with a...
42:03It does feel pretty dry.
42:04Yeah, with a treatment and a good clean, they'll come up lovely.
42:08I'll polish it and get it all out and give it a bit of protection.
42:12There's a couple of little tiny nicks, but...
42:14Yeah, you'll find...
42:15Like I say, she's 28 years old.
42:17I won't recognise it when I come and see it again.
42:19I'm sure you'll recognise it, but it'll be...
42:21It'll just be...
42:22It'll just have that little glint of a shine on it.
42:29When Honda, I think, first tried to get this engine into the car, it was a little bit too big.
42:35It was too tight to squeeze, but they realised that if they tilted it back at five degrees, then they could shoehorn it in.
42:42Back in the 90s, when Honda were developing this car, they were obviously really strong in Formula One.
42:47And they wanted to showcase, obviously, how well they were doing and the technology they had.
42:52And they actually put a lot of the Formula One technology from the time into this car.
42:56You basically own an F1 car.
42:58Well, I hope I don't have the bills that come with it. That's all I can say.
43:01Oh, no. Honda did well at keeping this.
43:04The making of a 90s F1 car here.
43:06Yeah.
43:07Yeah, I think it's very cool.
43:13I never really expected to buy a supercar.
43:16It was never really on the radar.
43:18I thought, you know what, if I don't do it now, I'll never do it.
43:22What's that?
43:23Yeah.
43:24Oh, no.
43:25Oh, no.
43:26Okay.
43:27Oh, no.
43:31And what's that?
43:33Oh.
43:34Oh, no.
43:36Oh, no.
43:37I don't.
43:38Oh, no.
43:39Oh, no.
