00:00on sale this week 159 is a 73 Triumph TR6 an owned from you TR6 now how nice is that
00:16but there's something about these sixes I mean listen to that absolutely lovely
00:23the 1924 Elvis 1250 lovely oh that is the official mascot of Elvis hair along a speed
00:33speed that's what it's all about in it lock number 86 the 1971 Lotus Super 7 right here we go
00:43yeah you want to be fairly nimble to be in and out of them don't you I think it's too
00:47blur to be honest 80 mile an hour in that feels like 150 mile an hour in that you know brilliant
00:56absolutely brilliant a lot number 73 wild boar and pheasant taxidermy there we are to be fair I
01:04will be very very surprised if that doesn't go to my house the Matthewsons a dynasty of classic car
01:13auctioneers 55 the joys of an auction most people will go to us out with something in mind but come
01:21away with something different the fun is the chase you just don't know what's on the end of the phone
01:27what you're gonna find when you open them doors this is a family's love affair with motors that
01:33have lived a life testing testing most people will buy a car because they can relate to it maybe a car
01:39that dad had you're selling dreams right here we go it's car coats at the ready in bickering where
01:59the weather has taken a seasonal turn I bought one of these many moons ago when the weather turned and
02:06they're just like walking around in your duvet I put an extra couple of layers on like you know
02:12keep myself warm but yeah I'm not a fan of the winter no no it's too cold hence the hot water bottle
02:19hugging it tightly beating the cold is something the classic car team has got down to a fine art so
02:26when you get freezing freezing cold you come in here and you pop on
02:29um he did seats put on number three
02:34oh I just really couldn't say that was just not to warm me arse up though
02:43up in the office Ali's keeping the troops fueled anything from the trolley anything from the trolley
02:51would you like salad it's a butter sandwich would anyone like some salad oh hello Dave would you like
02:57something from my trolley are you dinner lady tonight I am I'm dinner lady today yes very good role yes
03:04right I'll get on my popper job now after the snow comes the rain but Jack's up for the job he's got a day out with Grandad
03:22the good news is I've got your pack-up lunch I've got your corned beef and tomato sandwiches I've got
03:28your twirls corned beef and tomato yeah all right all right oh a little bit of a go where are we going
03:34then somewhere near Sheffield we're going for an Alvis and a Riley and nice early pre-war stuff
03:42late 30s 31 something like that these are two vehicles that I really do mean it if they don't
03:48achieve what they should do this auction we'll definitely keep until next and get a lot more
03:52exposure so like I say I'll do the paperwork you load up and and then you can drive home
04:00usually the way it goes you sure you don't want to load them off I'll do it make sure get them on
04:10right we're calling the market in lawnmowers so if anybody was throwing something out
04:22it came our way and as far as I know they all work cheek by jowl in this Sheffield garage are a couple
04:29of British beauties from a bygone age a 1929 Riley Monaco and this 1924 Alvis 1250 two cars that
04:40brought a lifetime of joy to Anne Harris and the late husband Brian I hope the cars go to somebody who
04:48will enjoy them as much as we have and will make good use of them because that was the other thing
04:53about Brian I didn't think cars just sit in garages or museums cars should be used this was the era that
05:04fueled our passion for cars and opened up a world beyond the streets we were born on provided you had
05:10the money of course these cars were an expensive luxury for the upper classes and Riley and Alvis were
05:17marked that embodied that age the Alvis came in 1966 repaints a bit from it bright yellow to nice green this is
05:28the touring car we've been all over France Switzerland Germany a day trip into Spain in the rain which
05:39was horrible so this was Brian's area yeah this was Brian's the first time we went out we went through a
05:50very busy area of Sheffield on a Saturday morning shopping you know it was a shopping area and it
05:58was breaking down I think roughly every hundred yards and I still married him so this is the Riley
06:08this one was mine I used to go to Wales and I used to trial it in Wales on the Welsh hills till it dropped
06:17to pieces I wasn't any good at all I don't think I really ever got to the top of the hill I can't
06:25remember doing but but it was fun it didn't have a lot done at it to start with only electrics and engine
06:38maintenance the body was fine until I raked when we had to rebuild it a friend of ours really who did
06:50upholstery and he recovered it it is a fabric covered body I seem to remember it used to rattle
06:57the steering wheel so he put the leather cover on to stop it rattling I think I can get to the passenger side
07:05I mean there's a lot of memories attached like oh there are yes the memories are still there they're
07:25not just bits of metal are they no they've got a character definitely they've got a life
07:30you've used one of you not properly right Derek's still at base as he's just remembered there's an
07:52important call he needed to make dial your number in then there's darling codes up there look you see
07:59like um like Scarborough yes oh it's ringing now but yeah I'll answer it hello the rest of the
08:11memorabilia team are knee-deep in the usual selection of signs and stuffed animals look at that mate look at
08:19any mint I love a bit of taxidermist I do taxidermy even yeah yeah I do you haven't been to my house
08:28have you and to be fair I will be very very surprised if that doesn't go to my house I've got a couple of
08:36pheasants I've got a squirrel gosh what else I forgot but now I love it absolutely love it if he's
08:42sensible old Boris there then he will go on my boot room wall I can picture him now and probably with
08:51Percy the present here yeah yeah it could be Percy couldn't it or Phil that might be better mind it
08:56Phil I know we're talking f's and peasy I know we are but Phil the pheasant so I'm not gonna say
09:02anything to Claire I'll just give her a lovely surprise when I go home yeah she'll be over the moon you
09:07know absolutely over the moon right here we go
09:37we've got a Lotus 7 1971 twin camp owner of the super 7 Alan strange also has some pretty tolerant
09:47neighbors I have been known to go up the village here in the mornings early and give it a bit of
09:53thrush and it sets all the alarms off on the cars it's a straight through exhaust almost so it's quite
10:01noisy and it gives a real burble when you're going along the car was a one-off built as a demo vehicle
10:08and had many modifications from the standard factory-made type you have a look so this is
10:19the twin cam which is saying that they would have had in the Lotus Cortina basically your Ford angler
10:24engine modified at the end of the day this car weighs probably about 500 kilos so it's very light
10:30apart from the chassis everything else is aluminium it's probably an upmarket go-kart if you really
10:35wanted to ever you know explain it but a bit more fun Lotus Supremo Colin Chapman came up with the
10:48design for the 7 in less than a week the result was a fast paired back no frills sports car that
10:55brought racing performance at an enthusiast price the car could be bought as a build-at-home kit a
11:02neat Dodge that avoided the pre VAT 1960s purchase tax Chapman's plan worked low cost and the wind in
11:10your hair the super 7 was a hit the car was practically on the ground in a trip to the shops
11:16felt like a lap at Silverstone no room for the groceries but that didn't matter it was all about your choice of
11:22driving gloves and the joy of speed changes to the tax rules on kit cars in the early 70s meant the game
11:30was up for the Lotus 7 Caterham stepped in bought all the remaining bodies and took over production the
11:38new cars were faithful to the Lotus originals and are still in production today you don't really want
11:55to go to Europe especially in Italy with this you get stopped too many times we got to a place called
12:00Cremona and there's a restaurant and I'll see these two carabinieri's turn up and they're wandering around
12:06the car and then they came into the restaurant and they went can we have a look at it well within half
12:13an hour there were six carabinieri's on their motorbikes and two police cars there I went out and
12:20I said to them right that's this is a good time to do a bank job and they just laughed and went
12:26probably so that was it you know because we're in speaking Italian so it was all right I would hope
12:39it would do 15 I'm not using it and I just think to leave it there would be a shame that somebody else
12:46have it and the money will go to do good courses I wanted to go to there we go but there's something
13:09I think about these sixes I mean listen to that absolutely lovely
13:19TR6 1973 beautiful driving car drives really well oh we launched a dive for beautiful in it
13:29absolutely beautiful I bet the back's the same yep it is 100% when the seat upholstery is really good
13:37but the sponge is completely gone look at that totally misshaped completely and absolutely gone
13:43they've had it look we're down to the frame of the seat there it is shut that door most TR6's come
13:53out of the factory like this with door gaps panel gaps like this wide at the top narrow at the bottom
13:58amazing isn't it and then we all wonder why they went skint but these actually they're quite good look
14:04virtually no gap but that's good for a TR that is brilliant lovely old car yeah one owner from you
14:13yeah Roger and just dropped it over and he poured it brand new and it cost him 1650 pounds or there
14:19abouts in 1973 in 1971 I bought my first two up and two down cottage for 1150 quid so in 1973 to buy a TR6
14:32of 1650 quid you think about it you have to have a few quid you really did there will be a good bit
14:39of interest in it the colors against it a little bit emerald green not particularly brilliant color
14:45really and not a good selling color so it won't actually romp away but it will be helped no end
14:50by the fact it's one owner from you I personally don't think it'll do 20 grand but it'll do pushing
14:56on that way I can see it doing somewhere between 17 and 19 in my opinion but what an honest old car
15:02look at that honest old thing isn't it really straight hang on
15:07I come once a year but I've never actually bought a car from here but I might do this time as a
15:22Jaguar I'm interested in I am interested in classic cars I wouldn't put myself in the same class as
15:28Derek Matthewson I'm more of a protégé the very first car I bought was a Triumph Roadster and I
15:37paid 23 pounds for it several years of saving up the money from repair for a round the seven Jaguars
15:46that are lovely I think there's such a range of cars that your eyes drawn to many different types
15:51so I do like the high-end ones like I was lucky men then I do indeed fast and furious plenty to
16:00choose from here and a lot of high-end Jags making high-end prices lot number 472 the cheapest e-type
16:07in the world it's gonna go at 34 500 pounds 428 the Jaguar there we are then these are lovely good value
16:17these are at the moment but 6,100 pound provisionally for the first second and third time 6-1 the Jaguar
16:26xk 150 genuinely my opinion while the best xk 150 is I've seen at 60,000 pound he's got himself an
16:33absolute storming xk 150 third and last time Alan there on the telephone it's gonna go
16:40jacks top many people's wish lists but the TR6 has generated a lot of interest 159 is a 73 Triumph TR6
16:59drove it myself from site to site just about faultless there we are owned from you and owned from you TR6 now
17:08how nice is that 14,000 thank you there at 14 14 14 000 and 250 14 250 14 5 one owner TR6 here 14,750 you
17:21don't come across one owner TR6 is 14,750 14 750 and see what we can do for you at 14 750 for the first
17:29second third last time at 14 and three quarters
17:33no sale on the day but an upped offer of 16 and a half was good enough for the TR6
17:43yes I didn't know what I was going to do with it the son-in-law said you could put a plunge pool in
18:00in Sheffield and Harris is moving on to classy tourers a 1929 Riley Monaco and a 1924 Alvis 1250
18:12hello this is Jack I'm Derek and I've never thought I'd apologize for being early that's a big car
18:23that isn't it is it a 1250 1250 big car isn't it no nice one just a job right yeah well we've got a
18:31tonneau cover that's good haven't we and we've got a roof on this one it'll probably be Wayman bodied
18:35would it is it Wayman I think it probably would be it's Brian bodied because he rebuilt it oh that
18:40was it all right yeah yeah and they both run they both run good show just a job super makes life a bit
18:49easier don't it yeah we're gonna get some ramps down to sort of get sort of a cup of tea
18:54yeah yeah milk and one sugar and biscuits of course and biscuits biscuits won't you oh absolutely yeah
19:02don't be offended if you haven't got chocolate chocolate biscuit that's all right then super job
19:08right it's coming down this one first Jack yeah yeah bang on mate bang on sounds a sweet old lot
19:27really nice sweet old thing yeah very sweet in actual facts well done Andrew well done that is
19:48the official mascot of Elvis hair along a speed speed that's what it's all about in it beautiful
19:56car super super super car
20:26I rate the car yeah I have a bit of a run at them ramps
20:32that's fine he's on lovely condition just a real genuine loved and used car
20:42two lovely old cars yeah yeah cosmetically not in brilliant condition but ever so honest ever so
20:52genuine sound lovely mechanically so if they drive half as well as those engines sound they'd be lovely cars
21:22there's a lot of it there's a lot of it there's a lot of it he's a lot yeah
21:28you've got any multi bikes there's only one full in then it has to be so yeah yeah are we saying his brother
21:42whilst sootie perfects his Keith Harris routine magpie Mick is tempted by a shiny bit of an old bike
21:52so I don't want those to say concern I'm gonna have it
21:55this one here actually now that that is what's known as a piss pot helmet that one they are really
22:06quite sought after so that will actually sell that lot just that one now the person to model that
22:14because she wears one is Linda in the canteen what we all do is go over there and show Linda and say to
22:24her what's this helmet called and nothing you see what she says what's that known as fish pot yeah there
22:30you go I told you didn't I yeah I've been on bikes all her life been all around Europe on bikes there you

24:49and you how are you and you're charlie i know that for a fact good man there's a little motor
24:53right that's the little motor the little motor paul and charlie are here to collect is alan's
24:58strangers low to seven i've got to an age now though where you've got to be more like a snake to get in
25:05and out if you've got the roof up even he would struggle yeah you want to be fairly nimble to
25:09be in and out of them don't you i think it's too low to be honest super and little trailer your
25:16confidence going to tow back all right should do i mean you know it's been to italy and back so i
25:21would imagine you could get it back up to yorkshire i would hope so you have a cup of tea here because
25:25liz made you some chocolate cake that's your dad rang me and said make sure they got some cake to eat
25:29charlie likes chocolate cake and brownies and all that i'm trying to ease off me
25:39forcing it on me forcing it how was your cake lovely oh you should have come in and had a bit
25:45i thought you weren't having any we'll have to have a little bit
25:51yeah yeah just to be sociable see we don't tend to use other people's trailers do we to be honest i did
25:59wonder about you taking it home you've got a tow bar haven't you
26:16whoa whoa whoa right it's tight alan hang on it's tight not half
26:22i think that's it yeah there you go it just it only just goes in
26:36you can just get a bit of cardboard down either side a bit tight for my liking but anyway alan's
26:42happy so that's the main thing isn't it and then when he's fed up with his lovely bentley's
26:45gonna ring me so it's gonna be a win-win
26:57so right you got all your food yes thank you very much so we got the car we got the paperwork
27:01good man i'm gonna run sorry for all that sorry for all that as well mate all the best alan and when you get bored of that old bentley give me a shout i will
27:11i like cars that carry a bit of life and a bit of history dave's in luck the 1929 riley monaco has
27:30both in spades it's not shining like a new pin but it's all there and i love that lived-in look
27:41here we are today you know wrapping cars with vinyl um to get the looks and things that we want and
27:50so on and so forth and uh they were doing it in the 30s it's nothing new
27:58yeah she's led ahead of her life the old girl she's got a bit of bedroom carpet in the back there
28:03or a bit of uh something hall stairs and landing i think
28:06let's face it that that was done 60 years ago wasn't it you know and then when they changed the
28:13bedroom carpet or the stairway carpet they kept a bit for the uh back of the car but everyone did
28:19it didn't they everyone did it then how long before we start putting lino back in yeah yeah yeah
28:23along with the riley is the imposing presence that is the 1924 alvis 1250
28:37now this carries that patina that i like and a big tour as well wonder what horsepower she is father
28:42will know yeah oh it's funny in it look you'd never sell that nowadays would you yeah how'd you get in and
28:52out well what you do is you break your ankle on that gear change there yeah all the places you
28:56could put it they put it there starter up there on your left hand foot so you've got a starter button
29:01up there ignition so you've got advanced or retired so obviously you retired it back before you start it
29:08and then you've got your throttle which is a hand throttle you can see it moving that one down there
29:13that's obviously working properly and that's nice that's a nice quality
29:18feel the clicks on there that's a nice quality control is that
29:22you just want a big coat don't you a big coat and uh and a big hat yeah
29:30a big coat and a big hat and some goggles perhaps and away you go hang on
29:43lot 796 we're doing she's a 29 fabric body monaco just an absolutely beautiful sweet little car
29:50start me on it where you're going to be with it whereabouts in your hands completely
29:54where who's got seven seven to start surely seven thousand pounds no money for irani monaco someone
30:01yeah yeah i've got seven thousand seven thousand pound i've got on the way seven thousand pound
30:06we'll submit it then is that all seven thousand pound ridiculous money seven thousand pound all done
30:10then what can i do i've been asked to submit the bid that's what i'll do provisionally only seven
30:15thousand pound we'll look at it later seven thousand seven thousand a deal was done seven thousand was
30:28accepted next up the alvis now then the second of the two cars that jack and i picked up from over
30:35there sheffield 838 the 1924 alvis 1250 lovely oh it is just gorgeous start me on it now then ten five
30:45eleven five eleven five eleven five eleven thousand five hundred eleven thousand five hundred what a car
30:51twelve thousand pound oh it's a beautiful car twelve thousand two fifty twelve five twelve thousand seven
30:58seven hundred and fifty absolutely stunning car thirteen thirteen thirteen i got thirteen do you want
31:04and a quarter yeah do you want thirteen and a half tell you what you're wrong worth its money all day long
31:10you're wrong thirteen five beautiful car lovely thirteen seven fifty here's the fourteen all done then thirteen
31:20thirteen seven fifty for the first thirteen seven fifty for the second third and last time thirteen seven fifty
31:35nearly four thousand more than the estimate a price the new owner and alvis collector jack meredith
31:41was happy to pay where does this one sit in the collection then oh for goodness sake man that's like
31:47asking which child do you love the best perfect what a beauty i'm on our way to inverness
32:03the lotus super seven is back in one piece
32:28just warm it up gently
32:30good little wheel
32:43so a real fit little engine and there's no sound like a pair of twin 40s or twin 45s certainly when
32:49you've got the airfields sticking right out the side of the bonnet there if they don't make you smile
32:53then nothing will put it that way they are awesome absolutely awesome so when you're sat in that driver's
32:59obviously what does it feel driving something like this skateboard skateboard skateboard with an engine
33:06so they might only be 150 horsepower for argument's sake uh on a good day that engine but they don't weigh
33:11anything and that will make you smile so much because you know 80 mile an hour in that feels like
33:21like 150 mile an hour in that you know brilliant absolutely brilliant the one thing you've got to be
33:29careful with no two are the same really in many respects because everybody personalizes them don't
33:34they um and that was the case back in the day when the lotus sevens because
33:39their usp was 600 quid you could buy the kit and you could build it at home so it made sports cars
33:45affordable
33:48you can buy a car that looks very very similar to this
33:52quite a nice little car for five six thousand quid
33:56so when you've got one of those there at five and six and then you've got one of these here at
34:02fifteen or sixteen ten thousand pound difference it just makes it a little bit more tricky
34:07buyers after the real thing know it comes at a price
34:16here we are then what's it worth ten i've got ten ten two fifty ten five ten thousand five hundred
34:23seven five eleven eleven thousand eleven and a quarter eleven a quarter eleven five eleven five
34:28the proper thing eleven seven fifty with you all the way twelve and a quarter twelve and a quarter
34:34twelve thousand five hundred absolutely dead right been all over europe with it proper proper
34:40car 12 750venir family

35:29If it makes you feel a lot better, I'll take 100 off of Surrey.
35:32I know they're a bit skimped down there.
35:33If you want to put another 100 in, I'll take it now.
35:36He's a bugger in it.
35:38Otherwise, 13,500.
35:40All right, go in then, 13,500, Skegnes, I love Skeggy.
35:4413,600, there you go.
35:46Dorkin, Surrey, poor people, 13,600.
35:49They must have clubbed together down there, Will.
35:51I bet they've gone next door, got a bit of money off the next door.
35:5313,600, Skegnes, you're losing it to Surrey.
35:58Who would have thought someone in Skegnes would have been outbid by someone in Surrey?
36:02You can't believe it, can you?
36:03What's the world getting to?
36:04It actually makes me laugh.
36:06Thank you for your bidding, gentlemen.
36:08I'm only joking, you know that.
36:09We always have a good laugh.
36:1113,600 provisioning for the first, second, third, and last time.
36:1613,600, there you go.
36:24Track days are probably the best place for them, aren't they, with the open tyres and everything?
36:27Well, some real talent goes into these cars, isn't there, when you think about it.
36:31There'll be hours and hours.
36:32They'll have spent more hours building it than they'll probably be driving it.
36:35You can see that on the car, then you know it's an Albus.
36:54Jack Meredith has got the Albus back to Inverness.
36:57It's a long drive from Pickering, but worth the effort.
37:00I formed the opinion that it was more or less necessary to have a 1250.
37:05It just so happened that we heard about this grey lady that Mattesons were selling.
37:11It had a wonderful provenance, a good history.
37:16So we were struck enough by it to have someone look at it for us with an expert eye
37:22and tell us, yes, this is the genuine article.
37:26Joining Jack for the car's first run out are members of the Albus Owner Club, Scottish section.
37:37Albus are special cars.
37:39It was what you bought if a Rolls-Royce was too common.
37:45I think it's a real character car.
37:48I think these cars have got a huge history to them.
37:51They've lived a life.
37:52Younger people are inheriting these cars.
37:55Instead of just running out and selling them, they're then going, oh, we could keep this.
37:58And that gets them involved in the movement.
38:01The general public love these cars.
38:19Wherever you park up, any pub or hotel or whatever, people flock around them.
38:24For 1930s cars, they are very usable.
38:32Their performance means you can go out and use them and keep up with modern traffic reasonably well.
38:40One of the things that you really get the feel for is as you're driving along,
38:45you can smell the countryside.
38:47You're in it.
38:49You can hear the birds singing as you're driving along.
38:51When you've got these cars of this ilk, it's important to keep collecting any bits and pieces
38:59to hold for future use.
39:04You can see upholstery, wings, exhaust gearboxes, bumpers, bonnets,
39:15everything that you could possibly want.
39:19Although I absolutely enjoy the notion of restoration, I enjoy even more driving them.
39:24A 1250 is everything you would expect it to be.
39:33It's such a magnificent looking car.
39:38It's a good size to it.
39:40A fantastic reputation.
39:42It's a car with pedigree and presence.
39:46And I can't think of another P for you in the alliteration, but yeah, a great car.
39:53Amongst the cars moving on today is the TR6, which new owners Ronnie and Selina Park are here in person to collect.
40:13I've always wanted one of these, and I'm getting to that age, if I didn't do it soon, I wouldn't do it at all.
40:23I like the colour, so the rest is history.
40:28We're driving it to a friend's in Northumberland to give it a wee run,
40:33and then we've got to drive it down to Wiltshire thereafter at the weekend.
40:37Got every faith in it.
40:38We're happy to report that the car made the round trip to its new home in Wiltshire without a hitch.
41:02Just a few miles from the Alvis, the other vintage car from Sheffield has also found a Scottish home.
41:08It even came with its own breakdown triangle.
41:13Which suggests it breaks down.
41:15New owner of the Riley Monaco, Tim Osborne, and his son Daniel have been getting it ready for a ride out.
41:23One of the disadvantages of a fabric car is that it does collect dust.
41:30We're not super pristine. We want them to be the way they were.
41:35A nice patina, as they say.
41:38It's great to drive. It's quite quiet because it's fabric.
41:42No radio, no air conditioning or electric stuff. It just works. It's proper mechanical driving.
41:50My generation, I think, are getting more into these cars. Once you experience them, you understand why.
42:01I had an uncle. This model was his first car. Although I don't remember it, I remember hearing about it.
42:12And it is at the end. This particular model, Riley 9, was a remarkable vehicle in its day.
42:21We didn't go to the auction. We didn't see them. But we did quite a bit of research. We were able to find out a little bit about the previous owner and we saw enough to suggest that, you know, that guy knew what he was doing.
42:34Brilliantly maintained and all the bits, spares that you might ever need were in the car.
42:39Under even the driver's seat, that's what you need at the side of the road. If something happens, you've got everything there that you need that you might need to put stuff back together.
42:49And it relates to its era. The hatch in the roof at the back is a smoker's hatch. The smoke comes out of the roof at the back.
42:57At the boot, you had a trunk, which you strapped on the back. So here, we've got both.
43:06And if you had a trunk, you just undid these a bit until this was flat and put your trunk on as well.
43:19The best thing you can do for the car is use it as much as possible. Let everyone else experience it and appreciate it as much as we do.
43:27We're just an ex-custodian, really. We're kind of entrusted with it and we'll try not to break it.
44:10Amen.
