I think if I didn't find Islam back then, my life would probably turn out a lot different.
00:09
No matter what religion, it's supposed to be something that guide you, right?
00:14
Last time, I was a free thinker, so there was kind of nothing guiding me along, you know?
00:21
I think I will be a much worse person if I haven't found Islam.
00:30
My name is Kisha Ang, I'm a real estate agent and I'm a Chinese Muslim.
00:36
Kisha is not the name you're born with, right?
00:38
No.
00:39
What does Kisha mean?
00:40
Kisha is a name I picked out for myself because the name I was born with is Ang Wan Ki,
00:50
so I still want to retain the ki because I still want to be authentic or genuine, like still me.
00:57
So, Kisha is basically like a variant of Aisha.
01:02
Can you tell me about your first encounter with Islam?
01:04
I think it was Ramadan back then at the Mamak shop.
01:05
Yeah, I was skating with my friends.
01:06
I heard some melody.
01:07
Then I was like,
01:12
I'm like,
01:13
I think it was Ramadan back then at the Mamak shop.
01:18
I think it was Ramadan back then, at the Mamak shop.
01:31
Yeah, I was skating with my friends.
01:34
I heard some melody, then I was curious.
01:37
So I asked my friends whom I was skating with.
01:39
Then they tell me it's the Azan, the call to prayer.
01:42
I think that was my first proper encounter with Islam.
01:48
I think that was my first proper encounter with Islam.
01:52
It was a whore.
01:54
I don't know.
01:56
I'm crying.
01:58
I'm crying.
02:00
I'm crying.
02:02
I'm crying.
02:04
I'm crying.
02:06
I'm crying.
02:08
I'm crying.
02:12
I'm crying.
02:16
Even until now, sometimes, when I hear the Azan, I still get goosebumps.
02:22
Yeah, it's kind of a remembrance of God.
02:26
Yeah.
02:27
It feels like he's calling us.
02:29
Yeah, so that's my first proper encounter with Islam.
02:34
I think learning about Islam is more of a gradual thing.
02:38
Like, I slowly learn more about Islam and the religion through daily life.
02:41
But I think my first official class in Darul Akam was in 2018 for my beginner's course on Islam.
02:50
In Singapore, if anybody wants to convert or revert to Islam, that is where we go.
02:56
Yeah, Muslim converts of association.
02:59
And I officially converted in 2022.
03:10
Did you have to prep your family?
03:12
How do you tell them?
03:13
Hmm.
03:14
Because I'm very close with my parents, my family, my sister.
03:19
Yeah, so their permission or their blessing matters a lot to me.
03:24
At the start, probably my parents were concerned because I was only 15 years old.
03:30
Maybe they scared.
03:31
I don't know what I was doing.
03:33
I was too young or maybe I was influenced.
03:35
Or maybe they even thought it was just a face.
03:37
They were also probably afraid that things were going to change.
03:42
I think it was probably in COVID lockdown period, right?
03:46
It just struck me, you know.
03:48
I was just like...
03:49
I go up to my mum and say,
03:50
I want to convert now.
03:52
Yeah, then after that she...
03:53
Then she just say,
03:54
Why must now?
03:55
Just wait until you...
03:57
You want to get married then and convert lah.
04:01
You want to do it now so fast for what?
04:03
Yeah, maybe more like that then...
04:05
I cry easily lah.
04:06
So then I just like...
04:07
And I...
04:08
I don't usually like fight or talk back with my mum.
04:11
So I just like...
04:12
Go into my room and cry lah.
04:15
When I look at my...
04:17
Other...
04:18
Malay Muslim friends who are born Muslims, right?
04:21
I feel like...
04:23
They grew up very fortunate because...
04:25
Especially during Ramadan,
04:26
They have their family to...
04:28
Cook with, to pray with, to breakfast with.
04:30
Yeah, but...
04:31
There was one particular day I remember.
04:33
It's just I go to the...
04:35
Pasal Malam, buy food, sit down at the block and break fast.
04:38
Yeah, alone.
04:39
So that was...
04:40
One day that...
04:41
I don't know why it just stuck with me.
04:42
Then that day just felt very, very lonely.
04:44
Yeah.
04:50
But of course, throughout these 10 years, they saw that...
04:52
I'm still the same.
04:53
I'm still their daughter.
04:54
Yeah, so...
04:55
Same person.
04:56
I think they've gotten very used to it.
04:58
Because since...
04:59
Since...
05:00
Since I was 15 until now, 28, right?
05:02
13 years really.
05:03
The whole 13 years.
05:04
So...
05:05
They know that this is what...
05:06
I know I want.
05:07
Yeah.
05:08
And they also seen...
05:09
Good side of my husband.
05:11
And...
05:12
So...
05:13
They're very comfortable with it already.
05:14
They...
05:15
They also...
05:16
They're very used to it.
05:17
I just like to...
05:19
Disturb them also.
05:21
Like...
05:22
Always randomly go ask...
05:23
I pretty or not in hijab?
05:24
Yeah.
05:25
Because I just recently started wearing it.
05:26
Yeah, so...
05:27
I'm a very...
05:28
Playful person.
05:29
Yeah, so you started wearing a hijab this year.
05:32
Yes.
05:33
And why did it take?
05:34
I think you...
05:35
Three years?
05:36
Hmm...
05:37
Yeah...
05:38
Close to three years.
05:39
Uh...
05:40
Actually...
05:41
Because...
05:42
Most of the time, I think I'm a perfectionist.
05:45
I try to...
05:47
Strive to be the best version of myself.
05:50
Meaning I set very high expectations of myself.
05:52
So...
05:53
Actually before I convert, right?
05:54
I was thinking...
05:55
Okay, once I convert, I'm gonna straight away put on the hijab.
05:58
Because...
05:59
Once I convert, right?
06:00
Basically...
06:01
I will be like a baby.
06:02
Like no sin like that.
06:03
Yeah...
06:04
Sinless.
06:05
Like a blank sheet of paper.
06:06
So if I convert, then I don't wear hijab.
06:08
Then straight away got stained and ready.
06:09
That's how I thought last time.
06:11
But...
06:12
When the day come, right?
06:15
After conversion, like...
06:16
Like...
06:17
I felt like...
06:18
Eh...
06:19
I wasn't ready.
06:20
Yeah...
06:21
Like...
06:22
I felt like I wasn't...
06:23
A good enough...
06:25
Muslim yet...
06:26
To...
06:27
To...
06:28
To wear the hijab.
06:29
To publicly show that...
06:31
Oh, I'm a Muslim.
06:32
Apart from...
06:33
Outfit...
06:34
As a Muslim...
06:35
Personally...
06:36
It's a lot about the...
06:37
Mindset also.
06:38
So like...
06:39
Remembrance of God is one thing.
06:40
Like...
06:41
When...
06:42
When I'm having difficulties...
06:43
How I react...
06:44
How I respond...
06:45
Is another thing also.
06:46
Yeah...
06:47
I couldn't bring myself to do it.
06:48
And also like...
06:49
I guess...
06:50
Excuses just keep coming up.
06:51
Like...
06:52
Wow, I have to change a lot of things.
06:53
My ID tag...
06:54
Also I have to retake picture.
06:55
Then my entire wardrobe...
06:56
I need to change.
06:57
So a lot of things.
06:58
After that, I tell myself things like...
06:59
Okay...
07:00
If by next year, March...
07:01
Something, something, something happened...
07:02
Then I will wear the hijab.
07:03
Yeah...
07:04
So I gave myself two different scenario...
07:05
Of something that might happen.
07:06
But...
07:07
Of course, both didn't happen.
07:08
When it came this year, March...
07:09
So a lot of things...
07:10
After that, I tell myself things like...
07:11
Okay...
07:12
If by next year, March...
07:13
Something, something, something happened...
07:15
Then I will wear the hijab.
07:16
Yeah...
07:17
So I gave myself two different scenario...
07:18
Of something that might happen.
07:19
But...
07:20
Of course, both didn't happen...
07:21
When it came this year, March or so...
07:23
But instead...
07:24
Something else happened.
07:25
Yeah...
07:26
So...
07:27
My friends asked me to do a...
07:28
Ramadan video.
07:29
Actually, I was contemplating.
07:31
I was very nervous.
07:32
Because to me...
07:33
If I were to do a public video...
07:36
Especially about Ramadan...
07:38
I should be properly dressed...
07:41
Appropriately in hijab.
07:43
Yeah...
07:44
So like...
07:45
After I agree...
07:46
Then the shooting day also...
07:47
Just nice...
07:48
One day before Ramadan.
07:49
Then to me right...
07:51
That one is a...
07:52
Very clear sign from God...
07:54
Already...
07:55
Because like...
07:56
I had intentions...
07:57
Since last time...
07:58
Then even stronger...
07:59
Since late last year...
08:00
Like he knows...
08:01
So he's like...
08:02
Pushing me saying...
08:03
Okay...
08:04
Time for you to wear the hijab then...
08:05
Yeah...
08:06
So...
08:07
Since...
08:08
The one day before Ramadan this year...
08:09
Until now...
08:10
I see...
08:11
I permanently wear the hijab.
08:15
When I...
08:16
Start to wear...
08:18
And...
08:19
Meet...
08:20
People for the first time...
08:21
With hijab...
08:22
It still feels...
08:23
Shy...
08:24
Yeah...
08:25
But...
08:26
I feel like...
08:27
Now that I've gotten used to it...
08:28
Like this three months...
08:29
When I go out...
08:31
I feel more comfortable...
08:33
Yeah...
08:34
Like...
08:35
Like I'm more in my own skin...
08:36
Even last time right...
08:37
Before I wear hijab also...
08:38
I try to wear...
08:39
Long sleeve long pants...
08:40
That can cover up lah...
08:41
But then I...
08:42
Feel very out of place...
08:43
Because...
08:44
I look...
08:45
Covered up...
08:46
But missing the head piece...
08:47
Yeah...
08:48
So last time you feel like...
08:49
Incomplete you know...
08:50
Like not here not there...
08:51
And I'm doing this...
08:52
For God...
08:53
Like I cover up...
08:54
For God...
08:55
Between this three months...
08:56
I start wearing the hijab...
08:57
Compared to last time...
08:59
Is...
09:00
The public's perception of me...
09:03
Because...
09:04
Last time I go everywhere right...
09:05
People were still thinking I'm Chinese...
09:07
Yeah...
09:08
Because I really look like Chinese...
09:09
I mean I am Chinese...
09:10
Right...
09:11
Yeah...
09:12
So I go places...
09:13
Then people were just...
09:14
They speak Chinese to me...
09:15
They also don't think I know how to speak Malay at all...
09:16
But...
09:17
Now...
09:18
Because I go out in hijab...
09:19
People automatically think I'm Malay...
09:20
Like although I look so Chinese...
09:21
Yeah...
09:22
So I think that's the most...
09:23
Most difference...
09:24
In general...
09:25
If I haven't found Islam...
09:28
Then I think my life would have been a lot...
09:30
A lot...
09:31
A lot different...
09:32
Because...
09:33
Like I said just now...
09:34
Islam is a way of life right...
09:35
It teaches me how to live...
09:36
How to be a person...
09:37
How to be a better human being...
09:38
Yeah...
09:39
How...
09:40
How to always be rooted...
09:41
I guess...
09:42
Yeah...
09:43
And I think...
09:44
Up until I die...
09:45
I will always be grateful...
09:46
That...
09:47
God has chosen me...
09:48
You know...
09:49
Out of so many...
09:50
People who are not born Muslim...
09:52
He chose to shine his light...
09:54
His light...
09:55
Yeah...
09:56
On me...
09:57
Ok...
10:00
It calls...
10:02
There's a face...
10:03
Hello...
10:05
Oh...
10:06
God is a very quiet person...
10:07
I guess...
10:08
should have stopped now...
10:09
Let's see...
10:10
You see...
10:11
Loving Me...
10:12
That...
10:13
Stop...
10:14
seem...
10:15
Onion...
10:16
They...
10:17
せ...
10:18
This...
10:20
Is...
