00:00Are you happy or sad today?
00:02Yeah.
00:02And I know that everybody's a little bit of both.
00:05But I want to know who's winning the fight.
00:08You know what I mean?
00:09Who outplayed who yesterday?
00:11The Niners or Cardinals?
00:12Oh, a little bit of both.
00:15That's a great question.
00:16That's a hard question.
00:17But in the end, the Niners won.
00:19Right.
00:19And it can be close, but the Niners won.
00:22And so that's kind of what I'm after today.
00:23I want to know who's winning that internal struggle between,
00:27yay, we're 3-0, and, oh, crap, Bosa's out for the year.
00:30It's obviously a mix.
00:31And, you know, it's a victory Monday, so you want to stay in that moment
00:35because winning NFL games is very hard, and you're 3-0,
00:38and there aren't a lot of those teams that are 3-0.
00:40And then you think about the future, and you realize, okay,
00:443-0 without Bosa is going to be tough.
00:47It's going to be tough to get to 4-0 or 5-0 or whatever if you get to the playoffs
00:51and you don't have Bosa and you won't have Bosa.
00:54What does that mean for your overall bigger picture?
00:57So for me, it's kind of a micro-macro.
01:01In the micro, you come off a game, you won the game, and it was a hard-fought game.
01:07They lost a guy.
01:08You lost a guy.
01:09You lost Mikel Williams for a while.
01:11He came back.
01:12You had backup linemen.
01:14You had a backup tight end.
01:15You had a backup quarterback, and you found a way to get the job done at home.
01:20It wasn't pretty, but you got the win, and they didn't.
01:23That is awesome.
01:24But the macro is, oh, my God, Bosa is gone for the year again,
01:30and will he be able to come back next year for the start of the year?
01:34It's now his third ACL, and will he ever be Nick Bosa again?
01:38And so when you think about it macro, you start to think about the really, really,
01:43really bad part of what the injury means.
01:46Well, and even the macro of the season, in other words, like, you could sit here
01:51and go, well, Mikel Williams couldn't, and Bryce Huff, they can fill in.
01:56Are we all crazy enough to think that this is the last injury the Niners are going
02:00to suffer this year?
02:01Right.
02:01That's it?
02:0214 more games and everything's just going to be hunky-dory?
02:05Like, your depth takes a huge hit, because there will be more.
02:09There will be more.
02:10And you have to be ready for that.
02:12And testing depth is a big part of any team.
02:15And then, to your point, I'll admit something that I wish, you know,
02:19wasn't really true this morning, but I'll admit it.
02:23I already Googled the three words, Nick, Bosa, contract, in search of when's the out.
02:31Yep.
02:32And it's not this next offseason.
02:33No, he's guaranteed next year.
02:35It's another one after that.
02:37So, and he'll be able to play next year.
02:39But will he be Nick Bosa?
02:41I mean, even if he is, we always are told that that first year coming off of the torn
02:48whatever, you're usually not your full-blown self.
02:52It's the year after that that you can really, really get it going.
02:55And so, yeah, man, it's tough, because I think there's also a realization today that
03:00this Nick Bosa experience has been very topsy-turvy.
03:04It went from, like, superstar rookie to torn ACL, to DPOI, to contract holdout, to some
03:14field underperformer, to great start to the season, to torn ACL again.
03:23So, like, it's a lot of up and down.
03:25Because at 2020, he played two games, tore his ACL, and then the next year he played
03:31all 17, he had 15 and a half sacks.
03:34So, if we think about next year and his ability to return and be Nick Bosa, well, the last time
03:40this happened, he came back and he was Nick Bosa.
03:42Now, he was 23.
03:44He was not going to be 28 turning into 29.
03:47A little bit different, but he was able to come back from that.
03:50And the first time he tore his ACL in high school, he went to Ohio State, and he sat
03:55out, and then he turned into the number, yeah, Nick Bosa, number two pick in the draft.
04:00And so, he has this ability to recover from this injury and be awesome again.
04:06And so, I don't doubt that he will, but to your point, for this year, there's no more Nick
04:11Bosa.
04:12No, and his brother has suffered some major injuries, too, and in fact, was very kind of left
04:17for, oh, he's on the downside, and he's had a great start up in Buffalo.
04:22He looks really good again.
04:23So, no, I don't think Nick Bosa, I don't think the Niners are done with him, but there's, boy,
04:28the Nick Bosa experience is a roller coaster.
04:31It just is.
04:32He's a great player, but it's been a roller coaster.
04:34There are some valleys, man.
04:36888-957-9570 is the number, but I can't, I don't know, man, ain't nothing going to break
04:42in my stride.
04:42Like, I can't get over the fact that this team is 3-0.
04:47The list of what they've been through already this year is bananas, and I want you to try
04:54to put that into perspective.
04:57Like, just think, within games and outside of games, what they've been through.
05:04They did that in the second half yesterday without Nick Bosa.
05:08They did that.
05:09But, like, Brock Purdy has missed two games.
05:12George Kittle has missed two games.
05:14Nick Bosa's missed a half a game.
05:15Trent Williams sought out a portion of the game.
05:18Jawan Jennings had a holdout.
05:19Jawan Jennings had an injury.
05:21Brandon Ayuk's never been here.
05:22Malik Mustafa has never been here.
05:25Christian McCaffrey had a scare.
05:27There was a safety.
05:29Somebody held in the end zone of a tie game with three minutes to go.
05:31Like, there has been so much crap, and you're 3-0.
05:38That's crazy.
05:39Yeah, you've survived all of it.
05:41Yeah.
05:41So that's really good.
05:43I don't care who the opponents are when you're talking about stuff like that.
05:46I do not care who the opponents are.
05:48I'm not saying that they would have beat the Ravens.
05:51They would have lost to the Ravens.
05:52Or the Bills or the Eagles or whatever.
05:54But the 3-0.
05:56Yeah, they beat the Cardinals.
05:57And they're in their division.
05:59And they beat Seattle.
06:01And they beat New Orleans on the road.
06:02And those teams aren't bad, by the way.
06:04Seattle and Arizona.
06:05New Orleans is.
06:06But Seattle and Arizona are not bad teams.
06:08No.
06:08In fact, they are undefeated outside of the Niners.
06:12The Seahawks and Cardinals.
06:13Right.
06:14Undefeated outside of the Niners.
06:15And you've got to face them again, and hopefully you can beat them again.
06:18So I never worry about being schedule Sam, because your schedule is your schedule,
06:23and it's the way it all lays out.
06:25And so you've got Jacksonville on Sunday, and Jacksonville is not a slouch.
06:30So you either will beat Jacksonville or you won't.
06:33And if you're good enough to beat Jacksonville, you shouldn't apologize the fact that you're
06:37better than Jacksonville.
06:38They're a good team.
06:39888-957-9570.
06:41We're about to go back to the phones.
06:43However, an interruption from Mark Grandy with this.
06:46Kyle Shanahan conference call update.
06:48Yeah, we'll hear the full thing coming up in a little bit once we get it cleaned up.
06:51But just to give you some of the injury updates, Kyle Shanahan said Nick Bosa's ACL tear is,
06:57quote, as clean as it gets, meaning there's no other damage to the knee other than the
07:01ACL itself.
07:03Kyle Shanahan says he expects quarterback Brock Purdy to continue back at practice this week.
07:08He'll be ready to go on Wednesday, and they'll evaluate him from there.
07:12Some other injuries.
07:13CJ West broke his thumb.
07:15He'll be reevaluated later this week.
07:17Could miss a game, but will be back soon.
07:19Matt Jones, day-to-day.
07:21Mike Hill Williams with that wrist, day-to-day.
07:24Renardo Green with a neck issue is day-to-day.
07:27I'd say that's a pretty good update.
07:29Like, you lost Nick Bosa.
07:31You knew that.
07:33CJ West is a maybe for a little while.
07:37You know, maybe a game, maybe two at the worst.
07:39Maybe none with a broken thumb.
07:41Maybe none.
07:42But everybody else, when you get the day-to-day on a Monday, that's as good as you're going
07:46to get.
07:46And then one other, Juwan Jennings, is also considered day-to-day at this point.
07:50Okay.
07:50I like that.
07:51So Purdy and Jennings are solid maybe to probables, I think, for this week.
07:57And then same for Renardo Green and Michael Williams, and I already forget who the other
08:02day-to-day person was.
08:03Mac Jones.
08:03Well, Mac Jones, right.
08:04Who, obviously, as much as we love the job that he's done, I'm hoping Mac does not play
08:09this weekend.
08:10Yeah.
08:10I hope he's available.
08:12Yeah.
08:12But I hope he doesn't play.
08:13But day-to-day, he sure looked pretty limited.
08:16He was pretty banged up toward the end of that game.
08:18Well, I guess there's an aggravation of a PCL.
08:20Right.
08:20Yeah.
08:20From the preseason.
08:22Right.
08:22Which, I mean, it'd be great if he was able to be your backup, and then you put Martinez
08:27back as your emergency third.
08:29I always have an affinity for whenever somebody injures their PCL, because I think that that
08:36was the name of our league in high school.
08:40Maybe we were the, I can't remember if we were the PCL or the PAL, Peninsula Athletic
08:44League, Peninsula Coast League, something like that.
08:48Yeah.
08:48Anyway, it always makes me think of high school.
08:50Okay.
08:50Thanks, Mac.
08:52And the PCL is the Pacific Coast League, of course.
08:54Yes.
08:55Yeah.
08:55Does that even exist anymore?
08:57I don't think so.
08:58I don't know if they call it anymore.
08:59That was the old, old school baseball league back when the Seals were playing and all the
09:03rest of it.
09:04Let's go to Dan in Alameda here on Willard and Dibs.
09:08Hi, Dan.
09:10Thank you for taking my call.
09:12Yeah.
09:12I'm going to say that being 3-0 for the Niners is like a miracle, and you guys are right.
09:20We should concentrate on Ricky Pearsall, because, you know, in the movie, Boys in the Hood
09:25with Ice Cube and Kuba Gooding Jr., Morris Chestnut and Larry Fishburne, Ricky is the
09:31star.
09:32And even Kuba says, Ricky!
09:34And then you've got Pop Smoke with, Run, Ricky, run.
09:38Run, Ricky, run.
09:39So it's all about Ricky Pearsall.
09:40And he's going to lead this offense next week against Jacksonville.
09:43And we're going to win some games, because to go 6-0, we might be able to get to the playoffs
09:48in a year where, you know, we could easily be 0-3 right now.
09:52Let's just, you know, come on.
09:53We all watched a lot of football since Montana and then.
09:56We could be 0-3.
09:58It's not a stretch.
09:59And, you know, with this offense, you're just going to have, and it makes me wonder, why
10:03didn't we take Shadur Sanders in the draft?
10:06Because, you know, with our quarterbacks hurt, I think Shadur would be, he'd be stepping in
10:10right now with all these young receivers.
10:12And they would want to play with Ricky.
10:15And my man Shadur, and we're going to go all the way.
10:19And remember, fire Buster Posey.
10:21Come on now.
10:22Oh, Dan.
10:24Come on, Dan.
10:26Oh, Dan.
10:27And I mean.
10:28Your energy is infectious.
10:29You can't invoke Ricky from Boys in the Hood.
10:34What happened to Ricky in Boys in the Hood?
10:36Yeah, the same thing that happened to Ricky at Union Square.
10:38The only difference is, is the real Ricky lived.
10:41But, Mike, thank you for noticing that.
10:44Like, Dan, you lost me the second you're like.
10:47Come on, Dan.
10:47It was like, Cuba Gooding Jr. screaming Ricky was because he just got shot.
10:53Not because he loved him and he was like, woo, he's good on the football field.
10:55Not because he converted a fourth in two.
10:58Ricky!
10:59Oh, my God.
11:00That is.
11:01That was beyond inappropriate.
11:03Just 10 seconds on that.
11:05That still is one of the hardest scenes for me to watch.
11:08To watch.
11:08In any movie ever.
11:10Cinematic history.
11:11It's brutal.
11:12Still heartbreaking.
11:14Even, like, that movie will come on and I'll watch it and we'll get to that part.
11:17It's like, no.
11:18Yeah, I'm going to go to the bathroom.
11:20I'm going to have to put on MTV or something.
11:22Oh.
11:23I'm going to put on The Office.
11:24I can't watch that.
11:26Anyway.
11:27Ricky.
11:28Your guy.
11:29Ricky Pearsall.
11:30Third in football and receiving yardage.
11:32Mom starts hitting ice cube when he gets home.
11:35What you hit me for?
11:36What you hit me for?
11:37Right.
11:38Yeah, well.
11:39Because you ain't going to be the cash cow.
11:41That's why.
11:42Oh.
11:43I hated that scene.
11:46Bring that up with Ricky Pearsall.
11:48And Buster Posey should not be fired.
11:51And your Shadur Sanders take is beans.
11:53I mean.
11:54Other than that, it was a great call.
11:55It was a great call, Dan, from the media.
11:58I mean.
11:58Oh, my God.
12:01I mean, lose a couple more games, Buster.
12:04You may have to pack your stuff.
12:07I mean, just 10 seconds on those Giants.
12:09Oh, yeah.
12:10What did you want to say?
12:11What a bummer.
12:12What's the bummer?
12:13The bummer is the way that this season is ending.
12:16It's one thing to not make the playoffs.
12:18It's another thing to go down to Dodger Stadium and basically get, like, patted on the head.
12:24You were surprised?
12:25I wasn't surprised.
12:26You were surprised.
12:27No, but it's just disgusting.
12:30It was over when they arrived there.
12:32You know that.
12:33It's just the fade.
12:35The fade is disappointing.
12:37Hey, hey, hey.
12:38Don't fade me.
12:39I wouldn't fade the dimmer.
12:40And I would love to hear the clip of the Niner pick, because I think I said exactly what was going to happen, and it all happened.
12:49I think you did, and all I told you, yeah, the pick was nauseating.
12:54Yeah.
12:55As was the game.
12:56Totally.
12:56The pick was, like, spot dead on, and all I could do was look at you and be like, I can't argue with you.
13:04We're not doing that.
13:05But I hate the concept, and then it happened, and I hated it, but it's okay, because the ball went through the little yellow thingies.
13:14And Eddie Pinero, and I would love, maybe we could get him on the show just to get exactly what he's saying, because he's pointing, like, this is my house, or I don't know exactly what he was saying, but the moxie in that young man.
13:28There's nothing better than kicker trash talk.
13:31It's absolutely amazing.
13:32Kicker trash talk reminds me, do you remember that minor league manager who lost his mind years ago?
13:39And it was like, bark, bark, bark, bark, bark, bark.
13:41He's arguing with the umps, and then he decides to, like, just put on a whole display.
13:46Yes.
13:46Like, he was a soldier, and he, like, pulled the pin on a grenade, and he was hiding behind the pitcher's mound, and he was down on all fours crawling around the infield.
13:56It was just like, hey, manager, what are you doing, dude?
14:00Like, you're not a player.
14:01You're not a soldier.
14:02What's happening right now?
14:04It's the same thing when a kicker puts one through and kind of does the, like, my house.
14:08Right.
14:09This is mine.
14:09It's like, no, you're allowed on the field for two minutes a day.
14:13Other than that, stand in the corner and just don't mess everything up.
14:18Kicker trash talk is the best.
14:20The best.
14:21I'm with you.
14:22I don't know what he was saying.
14:23I don't either, but he was pointing to the ground like, this is my house.
14:28This is my first time ever being here.
14:30I own this mother jumper.
14:32I'm told that this is our home field.
14:35I don't know any of you.
14:37We won.
14:38And I don't even know who we is.
14:40Exactly.
14:42He's perfect.
14:42People are hugging him, and he's like, what's your name?
14:46Hi.
14:47Hi.
14:48Hi, I'm Eddie.
14:49Hi, I'm Eddie.
14:50I'm Eddie.
14:51I just won the game.
14:52And what's funny, and I mean, this is going to be not a shot at Brock Purdy, but back-to-back
14:57games where the Niners had fourth quarter comebacks with Mac Jones.
15:04Back-to-back games?
15:05I think they...
15:06Were they down in New Orleans?
15:08Were they?
15:09They were down in New Orleans.
15:10No, no, they weren't down in New Orleans.
15:12All right.
15:12They should have been.
15:13Boy.
15:13They should have been.
15:14Chris Olave was standing by himself in the end zone.
15:17That was the first quarter, though.
15:18Yeah.
15:19No, no, no.
15:20Brock was down in the fourth quarter in Seattle, too.
15:23Benefiting from drops, though, is one of the sub-headlines from this year.
15:26Hello.
15:27For sure.
15:27Hello.
15:28I mean...
15:29Yesterday was crazy.
15:30Crazy.
15:30All right.
15:32Let's go to Miguel in Modesto.
15:34Hi, Miguel.
15:35Thanks for hanging.
15:36What's up?
15:38Hey, thanks for taking my call.
15:40So, I'm definitely feeling pretty high about the 3-0.
15:44I'm not going to give up on the season because Nick Bosa went down.
15:47I refused to do that.
15:49The off-seasons are just way too long.
15:51I kind of look at this as like a balance.
15:54Our defense was hanging in there.
15:56And now offense is going to have to step it up with guys coming back.
15:59I expect Jennings to play next game.
16:02Demarcus Robinson is going to be in there.
16:04And I expect Ricky to be Ricky.
16:06And, of course, Brock Purdy with his mobility.
16:08I think they'll have no problem really getting another debut against the Jags, even if it's a close game.
16:15It's a long season.
16:16This isn't the last guy that's going to go down, whether it's season-ending or not.
16:20And I think with players like Bryce Hoff, who also has two sacks on the year, like Nick Bosa,
16:26we've got to give these guys a chance to prove that they can fill his shoes before everyone goes crying looking for a fancy trade.
16:32So, that's all I wanted to say.
16:34Hey, thank you for taking the call.
16:35I'm with you, Miguel.
16:36Thank you very much.
16:37And that's what I mean.
16:39You know what Miguel's doing?
16:40Miguel's going week to week.
16:42Like, oh, how do we, you know, our ceiling went down.
16:46Your ceiling was a figment of your imagination to begin with.
16:49We're on to Cincinnati.
16:50Yeah, I don't know.
16:51I don't know where, like this whole, like, what if we play Green Bay in January?
16:55Good Lord, you're getting ahead of yourself.
16:59Like, play Jacksonville.
17:01Can you beat Jacksonville?
17:04Because, oh, by the way, if you beat Jacksonville, you're 4-0.
17:07And I don't need to give you the analytics on 4-0 teams.
17:11They go to the playoffs.
17:12A lot of times, yeah.
17:13Like, pretty much all the time.
17:15Yep.
17:15And so, you know, but the other truth is, is they're a game out of last place.
17:20So, they could lose to Jacksonville and the Rams, and just everything stinks.
17:26And you feel like you're out of it.
17:28So, like, just, I'm with Miguel.
17:31Maybe the right thing to do is to make a big trade, but not yet.
17:35Like, I don't even think anybody around the league is discussing that stuff yet.
17:38No, not in September.
17:40You're still trying to figure out who you are and what you have.
17:42And the other reality of being 3-0 is your point differential is plus 10.
17:48You're 3-0 with a plus 10.
17:50You won by 4, by 5, and by 1.
17:53So, three one-score games.
17:55Now, is that sustainable over a season?
17:57It can be.
17:58It's not sustainable over a long, long span over multiple years.
18:03But, yeah, right now, you're getting it done without a lot of offense.
18:07You're getting it done with timely defense, very timely defense,
18:10and also timely plays on offense.
18:13So, that formula is probably not sustainable over the long haul against really good teams.
18:19But the good news is you don't play a lot of, quote, really good teams.
18:23You've got the Rams and Tampa coming up.
18:25Those two teams are better than a lot of other teams you're going to face.
18:30Houston is, right now, they're in turmoil.
18:33I don't know what's going on with Houston and their quarterback, C.J. Stroud.
18:37Atlanta, is it Penix?
18:39Is it Cousins?
18:40We don't even know what Atlanta's doing right now.
18:42So, even in your, like, upcoming five-game schedule,
18:47even if you want to go to the Giants six games out,
18:50you've got a lot of opponents coming up that are in flux.
18:54Like, the Giants, will it be Jackson Dart then?
18:56It probably should be by then.
18:59Week five.
19:00Right.
19:00But you play them week nine.
19:02So, I'm just looking at your schedule upcoming,
19:05and you've got a winless Houston.
19:06Houston, you've got the Giants in turmoil.
19:09Atlanta with a possible quarterback question, whether it's Penix or Cousins.
19:14You've got a lot of games that are going to be winnable, even without Nick Bosa.
19:19Teams that start 3-0, since 1990, more than half of them win their division.
19:27Oh, wow.
19:28Teams that start 3-0, more than half of them, since 1990, win their division.
19:32Since 2020, teams that start 3-0, 86% of them make the playoffs.
19:38There you go.
19:39So, there's some, and that's on 3-0.
19:42Forget if you beat Jacksonville this week and go 4-0.
19:45I can give you some AI analytics on that.
19:48If they beat the Jags, they can beat the Jags.
19:55Postseason chances at 4-0 gets you to, yeah, I mean, north of 85%.
20:03I'd have to do some more digging to get the exact number.
20:07But, anyway, yeah.
20:09You're moving into about a 9-10 chance.
20:12Yeah.
20:12I'm making the playoffs already at 3-0, definitely, if they win this week and go 4-0.
20:17So, 888-957-9570.
20:20How about Fabian in Maryland?
20:22Hi, Fabian.
20:23Thanks for the call.
20:24Welcome to the show.
20:26Hey, what's up?
20:28No, I just feel like I think we should be more up than down, obviously.
20:33This is a messed up situation with Nick in it.
20:36But, you know, like you said, it was a gut punch.
20:38But I think things are in our favor, like you guys were just saying, 4-0.
20:43I was just talking to my girlfriend, and I was like, so the way I was breaking it down was like, all right, each win is one, right?
20:49But I kind of look at like a conference loss or a win, like Green Bay just lost, but they lost to Cleveland.
20:56So I was like, dang, it's not like a conference loss.
20:59But I feel like out of a conference, win or loss is like .75, and then a conference win is like 1.25, and then a division win is like one and a half wins.
21:10So when you look at that, we got all the metrics going in our way, and then, you know, we might be looking up 4-0.
21:17So I think there's more to smile about than the upset.
21:20Plus what we can do in the trade deadline.
21:24Fabian, I think you're on point.
21:26But the only thing I would change is that if you get a division win on the road, then it's worth somewhere between 1.75 and 2, which is why today I think the Niners are 4.5-1.
21:37Not 4.5-0.
21:384.5-0.
21:394.5-0.
21:40They played three games, and they're 4.5-0.
21:42Yeah, but a win over Jacksonville is only a half a win.
21:44Right.
21:45So you'd be 5-0 if they win this weekend.
21:46Even though you've played four games, you'd be 4-0.
21:49I don't know.
21:49All this crazy math, it's fun, and it's funny.
21:53I do think that there is a point to what you're saying about divisional games and divisional road games, certainly.
21:59But right now you're 2-0 in the division, and it's not to say that, you know, you dismiss Arizona, and you certainly don't dismiss Seattle.
22:07But it's the Rams for me.
22:09The Rams are the team that you need to worry the most about.
22:13And even though they lost yesterday, and it's a game that they probably should not have lost,
22:17I don't know what the win percentage was when they were up by 20 points in the second half,
22:23but probably north of 90%, and yet they couldn't get it done, and they had a couple of kicks blocked,
22:29and that's the way that went.
22:31But the Rams are going to be a really tough out.
22:33I'll tell you why yesterday was so big, though, for Niner fans,
22:36and I know it makes you throw up in your mouth to root for the Eagles,
22:39but that was a huge comeback because the difference between the fourth-place schedule and the first-place schedule is that game.
22:45Like that game and a couple others.
22:48They have Buffalo too, right?
22:49The Rams have to play Philly, they have to play Baltimore, and they have to play Detroit.
22:55And those are the games that they're playing that you're not.
22:58You're subbing out those games with Chicago, with Cleveland, and the New York Giants.
23:04That's what you get.
23:06And so if they win those games, then it's kind of like it's an even-steven deal.
23:11So the Rams, at Philly yesterday, they host the Colts this weekend.
23:16That's monstrous.
23:18Then they get the Niners on Thursday night, and then they go to Baltimore.
23:21That's their four-game stretch.
23:23And so I think the Niners need to make some hay during that stretch.
23:27While the Rams are playing such tough teams, and the Niners aren't, including one game against each other,
23:32and the Niners took that first step yesterday.
23:34And they both have Jacksonville, and then they have each other, and so that's in the next four.
23:38If you can find a way to beat Jacksonville and beat the Rams, well, now you'd be 3-0 in the division.
23:44You'd be 5-0 overall, and you'd be in a good spot.
