00:00Is there something innate about Batman that makes him so beloved across the entire world?
00:08A tragic story that is being transformed into something good?
00:14Or is it that Batman has attracted some of the greatest artists in all mediums,
00:21comic books, gaming, film, television, that have told the story about this character?
00:27And because of that, his legend has grown and grown.
00:31I think the answer is both.
00:36It's always interesting to me how different creatives can do something really unique with Batman
00:42using the same building blocks.
00:44Years ago at TT, we made the first Lego Batman game.
00:48That was so special for us.
00:50But now with Lego Batman Legacy of the Dark Knight,
00:53we are able to draw upon the whole history of that wonderful character
00:58and distill decades of fantastic storytelling
01:02to really immerse players in the experience of becoming the Dark Knight.
01:08I took the liberty of making some adjustments.
01:11The nature, the tonality of Batman changed with the times.
01:18That's what keeps these characters interesting.
01:20When we were looking at bringing this into one narrative, we did a lot of research.
01:24We've pulled in all of these references from Batman movies and TV shows.
01:28Batman 89, The Batman, The Dark Knight Trilogy.
01:31The animated series.
01:33We read every comic we could find.
01:37We had access to all the DC archive.
01:40And then putting down key, essential, iconic moments.
01:45That was our starting point.
01:47Everybody sees Batman in a different way.
01:51There's Batman as the do-gooder.
01:52Batman as the Dark Knight, this creature of vengeance.
01:55One of the many great things about Lego Batman Legacy of the Dark Knight
01:59is that it manifests all these different elements of Batman
02:03that we've loved over the years.
02:05People can experience this character maybe as fully as they ever have.
02:12Come on, Bruce. We'll be late for the movie.
02:14We start with young Bruce Wayne in the grounds of Wayne Manor,
02:18excited to go to the movies.
02:20Bruce!
02:21I need my outfit.
02:22Years later, we see him train with the League of Shadows and Nanda Parva
02:27and then return as a crime fighter to Gotham City
02:30where he builds a new family of crime-fighting allies.
02:35This has some of the greatest supporting characters of any Batman story ever,
02:38starting with Commissioner Gordon,
02:40an undervalued Batman character, a character I love.
02:44Batman.
02:45In Lego Batman Legacy of the Dark Knight,
02:48the criminals become ever more colorful and crazy.
02:52by the coolest rugs gallery in all of fiction.
02:56Gangs of criminals equipped with weapons.
02:59So as the player progresses,
03:01they will learn the skills and tactics they need
03:04to really start to turn the tide of crime in Gotham.
03:08I need to become more than a man.
03:09I need to become a symbol.
03:13I love this combination of DC and Lego.
03:21I like them working together.
03:22There's something about Lego that just opens our mind to play and creativity
03:28and kind of our own personal artistic expression.
03:32It has that spirit of the Lego physical toys,
03:36having all these different sets,
03:37pouring them on the floor,
03:38mashing them together and telling your own story like we all did as kids.
03:42I think the creative, playful nature of Lego brick feeds into how we work here at TT.
03:47This kind of wonderful medium harmonizing and visually bring it all together so it's cohesive.
03:56We've worked with TT Games for the longest time.
04:00There's a almost tactile feel to their games that makes it feel just right.
04:07They are able to create the diversity, the density, the beauty in some ways of the world of Batman
04:14through the vocabulary of Lego bricks.
04:17In this title, more than any of our others,
04:20we were really conscious about an engaging and dramatic story.
04:25Some of the best comedy sits in those dramatic moments.
04:29The comedy always drives the narrative.
04:32It never interrupts it.
04:33Take three!
04:35What?
04:36I love when a story defies expectation.
04:40I love the fact that we're going into Lego Batman.
04:43It actually has real emotion and stakes.
04:47Lego bricks as a medium changes the lens.
04:50It's adding a more playful aspect to it without taking away the main story.
04:56It's almost like a mosaic.
04:58When you come up close to a wall, you go, that's a Lego brick.
05:01You pull back and now you're in Gotham City and it feels and looks like Gotham City.
05:08For this game, we've strived to achieve a whole new level of detail.
05:12The surface imperfections of everything has been enhanced a lot.
05:15The small weave on the capes, the water droplets, how the rain runs down a character's face or on the Lego vehicles, every small detail we've pursued to make sure we're clearly visually better than what we've done before.
05:28You're in a world of Gotham City that is more alive and rich than any environment we've ever created.
05:35We know Gotham has had a history, so we built this layered experience and that kind of helps with our mechanics.
05:41The traversal of the city is just way, way beyond what we've done before.
05:46We really wanted to make sure that players could grapple and glide around Gotham City with that same mastery that Batman has.
05:53Being Batman, you get to drive the Batmobile, weaving in and out of traffic, hitting the booths, trying to control your speed.
06:02In the cityscapes, there'll be these alleys and these hidden rooftops and hidden areas where crimes will be taking place.
06:08And it's on you to go and find those locations, discover new things and protect the city.
06:16Who are you?
06:18When we're doing the testing now, it's fantastic to hear the feedback where they're saying,
06:22you feel like you're Batman. You are coming out of the darkness and taking the baddies down.
06:27It is incredible how immersive it feels.
06:30They've brought so many nuances and details of the world of Batman to life through this game.
06:34The fact that you can do it with a friend or a buddy as a dynamic duo in the same room together,
06:40I think people are just going to be blown away.
06:42The big part of the success with LEGO Brand is stories and experiences connect from one generation to the next.
06:50I mean, I'm excited about all the people that have never experienced Batman in any sort of personal way.
06:56Being able to play this game, and now they have their own connection to Batman.
07:00They have their own connection to the DC Universe.
07:08Part of the premise of working on Batman is to come in and do your own take.
07:12LEGO Batman Legacy of the Dark Knight reflects that ambition.
07:15This game is an absolute celebration of everything Batman.
07:19A lot of people have been waiting for exactly this experience.
07:24Batman's primal story of fear and overcoming fear has lived on for generations,
07:31and all of us at TT are incredibly honored to now be able to contribute to that legacy.
