Some 10,000 more prison officers will be given body armour in jails as ministers ramp up protection after a number of high-profile attacks. Justice Secretary David Lammy announced the number of stab-proof vests will rise from 750 to 10,000 as he visited Belmarsh prison, in south-east London, home to some of the country’s most dangerous criminals. 00:00Many of us were shocked by the outrage of prison officers being attacked in HMP Franklin just
00:12a few months ago. It's hugely important that this important work has officers feeling safe
00:19as they keep our country safe. So I'm very pleased to be announcing an increase in body
00:26armour for our officers, very significant kits, stab vests particularly that they can
00:34now use, 15 million pounds worth of new kit to support them and we're also increasing
00:40the amount of tasers that are available to officers that they can use in the most extreme
00:47of circumstances. And speaking to officers here at Belmarsh and obviously Belmarsh has
00:52to keep some of the most dangerous people in our country, they absolutely have to be
00:58supported to do their job.
