Naotaka Hiro’s second solo exhibition, *Of Two*, at Bortolami showcases his dialectical mark-making across canvas, wood, and bronze. Hiro’s practice oscillates between intuitive, organic creation and analytical reflection, embodying dual personas—instinctive and reflective. For his wood paintings, he works beneath hovering panels, pressing his body against them, unable to see his progress until flipping them for analysis. His vertical canvases involve wrapping himself in fabric, painting in intense bursts, then unfurling to reveal gestural traces—red lines for movement, green for stillness, and asterisks marking anatomical points. In the small room, massive canvases *Sandwaves, Internally, Volumes 1 and 2* display wavelike patterns from Hiro’s physical engagement. His bronze sculptures, *Plot, Perpetual* and *Plot, Rerouted*, capture subtle movements in silicone molds, later exaggerated to blur replication and reinterpretation. Hiro’s work, rooted in his filmmaking background, navigates dual roles—actor and director—merging subjective immersion with objective analysis. The exhibition runs until November 1, 2025.
