00:00Are you ready for a Patriots Friday, Keith?
00:02Yes, I am ready for a Patriots Friday.
00:04Just Patriots today.
00:05Nothing else.
00:06Not going to talk about anything else.
00:07Just the Patriots.
00:09Nothing else to see here.
00:10Everything's fine.
00:11I'll tell you.
00:12Yeah, cue the guy drinking the coffee in the firehouse meme.
00:17That is, that's where we're at there.
00:19Red Sox feel like they're really going to blow it.
00:21Yeah, a little bit.
00:22Just yesterday, I'm like, why couldn't they be the Braves and win without Ronald Acuna?
00:26Now I'm like, now I'm like.
00:27They might be the 1989 Braves.
00:30They're not going to be any of the good Braves teams.
00:33No.
00:34We'll get to.
00:35But the Patriots, meanwhile, their season is just getting started.
00:37They're just getting started.
00:39Get ready for some bats.
00:40They can win back-to-back games.
00:41And not ready for some Red Sox.
00:41They could win back-to-back games for the first time in a dog's age.
00:44They certainly could.
00:46So we're rooting for that.
00:47It would help if the Red Sox could win any games, never mind back-to-back.
00:49I'll take any of them.
00:50But we'll get to that coming up here on a Patriots Friday.
00:53It is also a Top 5 Friday.
00:55Okay, coming your way at 1045, we're going to do comedy sequels, Keith.
01:00That's right.
01:00With Spinal Tap 2 in theaters right now, just me and Davey saw it.
01:04Nobody else, according to the box office.
01:06But that is a comedy sequel and a pretty good one.
01:08Not eligible for my list.
01:09I've not seen it.
01:10No.
01:10But it could be on yours.
01:11It could be.
01:11I have seen it.
01:12And we'll give you the Top 5.
01:14There are some good ones.
01:15There's not.
01:15It's a tough thing to hit just right.
01:18But there are enough good ones.
01:19You said this to me many years ago.
01:20You're like, a comedy sequel is really tough to do.
01:22A strong comedy sequel is real difficult.
01:24But I think there's enough.
01:25Yeah, I know.
01:26I like my Top 5 list a lot.
01:27I feel good about my Top 5.
01:28So it'll be good.
01:29So we'll do that coming up 1045.
01:30We've got the Friday 4-pack for you at 1130.
01:33As well, a 4-pack of questions pertaining to Pats and Steelers this weekend.
01:38We also have the Week in Review at 1245.
01:41And down the hall.
01:44Keith's Keys.
01:45To the Pats and Steelers at 1 o'clock.
01:47Mike and Wenu also going to join us in the 1 o'clock hour.
01:50So stay tuned for it all day long here on Jones and Keith's Patriots Friday.
01:55Let's start Patriots, Keith.
01:56Yep.
01:57I feel better and better about this matchup as the week goes along, to be honest.
02:00I like that they're underdogs.
02:01I like that people still kind of believe in Aaron Rodgers.
02:04I like that Vrabel, when asked the question about winning back-to-back games, is like,
02:10look, I'm not a part of any of that.
02:12I kind of like the whole way he's approaching it.
02:14And the further we go along this week, the better I feel about this matchup.
02:17I think they're going to win again.
02:18Yeah, and maybe it's because they did look offensively so good against Miami last week.
02:24So we're still thinking, just a few days ago, Drake May having nearly like a perfect game.
02:29I mean, he had very few incomplete passes.
02:31He had two touchdown passes, a touchdown run.
02:34It just felt like he was more comfortable in the offense.
02:36The offensive line was really good.
02:39And even though the game was close, and it was against a very bad team in the Miami Dolphins,
02:43I don't know, there's a ton of confidence to have coming out of that game.
02:46And then you combine that with Pittsburgh getting off to the start that they've gotten off to,
02:51meaning they've given up a ton of points and a ton of yards to Justin Fields and to Sam Darnold,
02:58who I'd take Drake May over both of those guys right now.
03:02The Pittsburgh defense has been, and we've tried to hammer this home all week.
03:05I don't know that Patriots fans fully realize it.
03:08And the Pats defense hasn't been great either.
03:09No, no, no.
03:09Yeah, nobody's throwing them a parade.
03:11But the Pittsburgh defense has been atrocious for two weeks.
03:14It's just under 400 yards of offense in each of the first two games,
03:18and then over 30 points both times.
03:20So as much as a lot of week one the talk was, oh, Aaron Rodgers is against the Jets,
03:25and he kind of stuck it to the Jets.
03:27He threw four touchdowns.
03:28They won by a field goal.
03:29They barely won that game because the Jets offense, which nobody loves,
03:34was able to put up over 30 points.
03:36And then this past week Seattle took it to them.
03:38And teams are doing it.
03:39They're throwing on them.
03:40They're running on them very effectively.
03:41And that's another reason why I have confidence,
03:43because if the Patriots run early and have success doing that,
03:47it's going to make the day a lot easier for Drake May.
03:49You can look at the last two weeks as an example.
03:52Raiders stopped the run, kind of stopped the whole thing.
03:54The Dolphins never really stopped the run,
03:56and it allowed Drake May to do and the Patriots offense to do
03:59pretty much whatever they wanted,
04:01which I think is what's going to happen this Sunday.
04:04I think it's a Travion Henderson game,
04:05and that is not to say Drake May won't have a big game or Romandre.
04:08Stevenson won't do anything or Diggs couldn't get involved.
04:11I look at the running backs who have had success against the Steelers.
04:14It was Ken Walker last week.
04:16It was Brees Hall week one.
04:17And Travion Henderson, athletically, in terms of his burst and explosion,
04:23I think he's the kind of back who matches up with those two.
04:26So I think it's a Travion Henderson week.
04:28I think they're going to be able to do whatever they want on offense.
04:30They should, should be getting Christian Gonzalez back, I think.
04:35Do you not think that?
04:35I don't think so.
04:36You're making a face.
04:36Yeah, no, I don't think so.
04:37I mean, I think it would be great,
04:39but he was out for seven weeks with a hamstring injury.
04:42And that's exactly why he should be back.
04:44Yeah, yeah, yeah.
04:45But I think he's going to need the second week of practice to sort of ramp it up.
04:48That's my guess.
04:49I could be wrong, and I'd be happy to see him out there.
04:51Giardi yesterday said Christian Gonzalez took a rep in a shadow tackle drill.
04:55Hell yeah.
04:56And then was part of a half field chase down drill with guys you would consider the starter.
05:02So Giardi said yesterday.
05:03Shadow tackle drill.
05:04I don't know, I don't know, Tuesday night.
05:09But he had, no, hopefully he does.
05:10He was lining up with the starters is the real point there.
05:12And so, I don't know.
05:13I think that's encouraging that he's going to be out there.
05:15I hope so.
05:16Yeah.
05:16And really, the Steelers just have DK Metcalf as far as like who they would throw to.
05:21You know, last week, you needed him a little bit more with those two receivers.
05:24And even Geno Smith threw it way more than I thought he was going to with the Raiders.
05:27So, yeah, you would absolutely take him.
05:29I'd be thrilled to have him.
05:30I'd feel even more confident.
05:31I think they can win and will win even if he doesn't play.
05:35Me too.
05:35So, if you add him to the equation, then great.
05:38It's funny.
05:38Looking at Seattle last week.
05:39We were both picking them on Monday.
05:40We're like, they're going to win.
05:41And that was way before I thought Gonzalez was going to practice, never mind play.
05:44So, yeah, I'd pick them either way.
05:46But I'd feel better about it, obviously.
05:48Sam Darnold had almost 300 yards passing.
05:50Kenneth Walker had over 100 yards rushing.
05:53Jackson Smith and Jacob had over 100 yards receiving.
05:55And Cooper Cup, the corpse of Cooper Cup, had 90 yards receiving.
05:59So, they were able to do pretty much whatever they wanted offensively.
06:03And so, yeah, I think the Patriots will be in good shape.
06:06And, yeah, we'll see.
06:07I mean, Gonzalez, my guess, will be listed as questionable going into the game.
06:11And then we'll find out at 1130 on Sunday if he's active or not.
06:15Fingers crossed that he's out there.
06:16But, I don't know.
06:17I have my doubts.
06:17All right.
06:18This week's Verizon matchup features the Patriots offense against that Steelers defense.
06:22We both expect a big day out of the Pats.
06:24That is your Verizon matchup, the New England Patriots, powered by Verizon 5G.
06:30Let me ask you this, Keith.
06:31When Jeremy Piven came in studio on Wednesday, Frank.
06:34Yeah.
06:35I believe we were right in the midst of answering this question.
06:38So, just let me double check your answer.
06:39We were right in the throes of it.
06:40Mike Vrabel or Mike Tomlin?
06:43I'm going Mike Vrabel.
06:44I don't think anybody could make the case for either guy and be like,
06:48it's for sure him and the other guy.
06:50No way.
06:50It's like a big gap between the two.
06:52It's not.
06:53But, Mike Tomlin has obviously been one of the most steady coaches in the NFL.
06:58Has that crazy streak of not having a losing record.
07:01Although, also hasn't won a playoff game in going on 10 years.
07:06And, kind of gets there and then loses.
07:08And, is always kind of in it.
07:09But, I don't think they've been a Super Bowl contender since they won it.
07:13And, that was a long time ago.
07:16Mike Vrabel, you know, the last couple years in Tennessee obviously weren't very good.
07:20But, when he had A.J. Brown with Derrick Henry and even Tannehill.
07:24I mean, they made a conference championship game.
07:26I like Vrabel a little bit more.
07:29It's hard to go crazy and be like, oh, he's way better.
07:31But, I'll take Vrabel.
07:33And, you know, if you could do this in a vacuum or Mike Tomlin were here and Vrabel flipped,
07:38I might feel differently.
07:40So, I'm not down on Tomlin as a coach.
07:42Yeah, yeah, yeah.
07:42I just think it's stale.
07:43Yep, for sure.
07:44I think what's gone on there is he's barely holding on.
07:48Yeah.
07:48They're living by this, oh, well, he always has a winning season.
07:51And, most of the time he makes the playoffs.
07:53Or, he never has a losing season.
07:54And, most of the time makes the playoffs.
07:56And, he's such a floor coach these days.
07:59And, I think Roger's going to drag it down.
08:01I'm not a big believer in Mike Tomlin today.
08:03If he gets another job and he starts over somewhere else, I may change my answer.
08:07So, maybe that's too wishy-washy.
08:09But, this weekend, I like Vrabel better.
08:11Vrabel is energized and in a new spot.
08:14And, I don't think he's a great head coach.
08:16I think he's a good head coach.
08:17But, I feel similar to Tomlin.
08:19So, I'd take Vrabel.
08:20Same question with the quarterbacks.
08:21May or Rogers?
08:23So, this one I actually do think is close.
08:26And, I'm really hopeful that the answer is different in, say, five weeks.
08:30But, right now, I'm still going to take Aaron Rodgers.
08:32I think Aaron Rodgers is not what he was.
08:35Last year, he only won five games with the Jets.
08:38But, I think a big part of, like, the anti-Rodgers push would be, he basically went into New York and played GM.
08:44And, then, you know, people are annoyed with all of his different interviews and stuff that he does.
08:48But, like, on the field, Drake Mays had a great game last week.
08:53Like, a great game.
08:54How many great games has he had in his career?
08:57Oh.
08:57And, right now, maybe just the one.
08:59Like, I think we probably tiered the two in a similar group where they're, like.
09:03I was actually just trying to look.
09:04I was trying to find our QB tiers.
09:05Or, do we have Rodgers lower?
09:06I'm looking it up.
09:07I would almost guarantee we had Rodgers lower.
09:09But, I'm trying to find our QB tiers.
09:11I'm searching for him.
09:11But, it feels like all these guys so far are kind of similar.
09:16Where, like, Geno Smith or Tua or Rodgers or May, for this season, especially the first month of the season, they're all capable of a really good game and a really bad game.
09:25So, even though I don't want Rodgers by any stretch, I think for just Sunday, I think Rodgers is still a better quarterback.
09:31Yeah.
09:32And, I think if you want to say it that way, like, for one week.
09:35Yeah.
09:36That's a.
09:36I hope it's a different answer soon.
09:38Like, that kind of thing.
09:39And, you know, if you get into, for the next two years, it's not even a debate.
09:45And, even by the end of this year, hopefully it changes.
09:47You know, if Drake May has a few more games like he did this past Sunday, then it will change the answer.
09:52But, right now, I mean, I don't know.
09:53I mean, Aaron Rodgers, everyone clowned on him.
09:56He still had, like, what, 28 touchdown passes last year.
09:58Yep.
09:58Like, he wasn't a complete bust.
10:00It was more of the expectations and, you know, you kind of roll your eyes at him.
10:05But, yeah.
10:05I would take Drake May in that matchup.
10:08But, the way you said it would be the closest to get me to answer Aaron Rodgers.
10:12Like, just for a game, who am I taking?
10:14For the year, who am I taking?
10:16May.
10:16Obviously, long-term, we'd all take Drake May.
10:18But, Sunday, you'd say Rodgers is the better quarterback in the game?
10:20No.
10:21No.
10:21I would still lean May.
10:22But, I'm saying, if you ask me that question, that's the one I've got to think about the most.
10:26I'd say Drake May.
10:27May looked terrible week one.
10:28He looked great last week.
10:31Rodgers looked pretty good week one.
10:33He threw four touchdowns.
10:34I think that does mask some of the other stuff he did in that game, which wasn't as good.
10:39And then, last week, not so hot.
10:40Now, you're right.
10:41His numbers last year were, at the end of the day, pretty good.
10:44I just, I don't feel like he's anywhere near as surgical as he used to be.
10:49Anywhere near the same player.
10:50He's bouncing around team to team.
10:51Right.
10:51I would lean May, but that's fine.
10:53But, on just Sunday, that is close.
10:55And, I think if Drake May is allowed to run a little bit, that's something that Rodgers doesn't do anymore.
11:01And, I mean, he might pick up the occasional few yards here and there.
11:04But, like, that is another advantage that Drake May could have.
11:07I think both the head coach and the quarterback matchups are pretty close.
11:12Like, I think, you know, you could make a good case for either guy.
11:15Especially when you're talking about just this Sunday.
11:17And, it's also the first time, like, they're in a similar situation where both are going to be going into their third game as a duo.
11:23Right?
11:23Like, nobody has the experience advantage over the other.
11:27Like, Tomlin's worked with Rodgers for so long.
11:29Or, or Vrabel knows Drake May.
11:30No, it's both very early in the relationships.
11:33And, it's a pretty big game for both teams in that sense, too.
11:36Because, they both look at the other one as, this is a winnable game.
11:40Like, this is a very winnable game.
11:41Oh, no.
11:42Somebody's going to be 2-1.
11:43This is, they're kind of like, let's, let's get, let's get above 500.
11:46Let's get some momentum going.
11:48And, the Patriots look at it the same.
11:49The talk on Monday in either place would be, alright, you're 1-2 and you lost to the Steelers.
11:54Or, you're 1-2 and you lost to the Patriots.
11:56Like, it's a big kind of swing game early in the year.
11:59So, you guys can discuss Pats or Steelers.
12:02How do you see it shaking out?
12:04Who do you like in the coaching matchup?
12:05Who do you like in the quarterback matchup?
12:07We continue to pick our way through it here on a Patriots Friday on Jones and K.
