00:00A vast world of possibilities, voyages of discovery, new world trade goods to exploit and profit from, and building a colonial empire that will reshape the globe.
00:12Let us set sail with exploration and colonization and its impact on the living world of Europa Universalis V in today's feature video.
00:24Exploration in EU5 is about discovery and opportunity.
00:27Fully coming into its own during the age of discovery.
00:32Exploration is part of our wider geopolitics system and can be found under the expansion tab as it lies closely to your nation's technology, navy, and pops.
00:42Mechanically, exploration will allow a nation to uncover more of the world map, discovering locations for colonization, new markets, and other nations that may already exist.
00:53Exploring overseas will cost you in both time and money.
00:56You will also need to recruit explorers for these expeditions.
01:00Most of the time, these explorers will be hired from your court, but can also include historical figures like Columbus or Magellan, venturing into Terra Incognita, revealing new lands and new resources.
01:11As your expedition explores uncharted territory, you will not know where they are exactly, until they return, revealing more of the map.
01:20Once your naval exploration finds land, you will need to fund a separate land expedition to chart deeper into the coastline.
01:27Coastal nations like Portugal or Castile will start with an advantage, thanks to advanced shipbuilding and maritime tradition.
01:35That being said, exploration isn't limited to just those with the right ideas.
01:40Theoretically, any nation in EU5 could become a colonial power.
01:44Discovering new lands opens your nation up to new opportunities.
01:47You'll gain access to trading with new markets, discover potential allies and potential enemies, and of course you'll find land ripe for colonization.
01:56Colonization lets you claim and settle new lands.
02:00Once again, like exploring, colonization is a constant investment, not just in money, but in pops and time.
02:07To colonize, you grant a colonial charter to a specific area of the map, and pops will move from your homeland every month to slowly colonize the target location.
02:17Colonies are shaped by their environment and pops.
02:21For example, in tropical provinces, say in Brazil, the colonists will face risks like disease, which will slow the pop growth unless you invest in medicine or better infrastructure.
02:31Likewise, fertile regions like Virginia will have their own challenges.
02:37They might attract settlers faster, but your settlers might also clash with the indigenous pops already living in that location.
02:44Once a colony completes, you'll be able to assign its governance or add it to an existing colonial nation already under your control.
02:51But the work is far from complete.
02:53For a colony to survive, you'll need to support it from the homeland.
02:57This is where the colony system will integrate with your global trade.
03:00You might need to ship grain to a Caribbean colony to prevent starvation, but the colony itself might still export sugar back home, which will boost your economy and population happiness in your primary market.
03:12Discovered regions will give access to new markets, from which colonial goods will flow back to the home nation, bolstering their coffers.
03:19Controlling key nodes requires naval dominance and strategic infrastructure, as rival nations will vie for the same prizes.
03:26Colonizing different parts of the world will give you access to goods and resources that do not exist in your market.
03:33Bringing a new good into a market can create a new demand and economic potential.
03:37But do be careful.
03:39Once a pop gets a taste for some of these exotic new goods, they will continue demanding it, and if you are unable to feed that demand, it may lead your pops to becoming more dissatisfied.
03:48This all makes exploration and colonization a high-stakes investment, gambling with world-changing rewards.
03:55Maybe your colonial efforts will lead to booming economic growth, or maybe all that time and ducats will be spent in vain, as you're edged out by a more powerful colonial rival.
04:04Or perhaps changing events at home means you're unable to support your colony, and it will simply wither and die.
04:10Whatever happens, remember to be ambitious.
