00:00Duncan's daughter gets a new figure, but is she disappointing?
00:03Here's your look at the Mattel Massie Universe Masterverse New Eternia, Teela.
00:20Teela embraces her destiny as the avatar of the goddess of New Eternia
00:24in her quest to restore the power of Greyskull.
00:27She may be the captain of the garden all, but I still have my complaints.
00:30And those complaints will be discussed shortly.
00:32First, though, let's take the tape measure, and let's see how tall the New Eternia, Teela, stands.
00:37Of course, we'll also bring in some other examples as well.
00:39You know, it dawned on me, as it usually does when I start these reviews,
00:43it dawned on me I don't have myself a 7-inch scale Teela.
00:46I don't. Nothing from the revelation. Nothing previously either.
00:50So we're going to have to bring in some other figures instead.
00:53Teela, in the meantime, is going to stand at 7 inches in height,
00:56working out to be a figure that's 17 1⁄2 centimeters tall.
01:00Because I don't have a Teela of this size, we'll have to use stand-ins that start with S.
01:04On one side, we have the sorceress. On the other, She-Ra.
01:08Now, Teela and She-Ra are using the brand new bodies that make them a lot taller, obviously,
01:13so they cast, unfortunately, a really awkward shadow on the poor sorceress.
01:17Sorceress, though, one thing that she does do better, though, she has much better paint on her face.
01:21Something, though, about the recent releases, Evil-Lynn wasn't so bad.
01:25But I did notice, though, with She-Ra and now Teela, the faces are really off.
01:30It's almost as if, like, the sculpt is there, but the paint is the thing that lets it down.
01:35Not really speaking, though, with S's, but here's what they also look like with Battle Armor He-Man.
01:39Let's also bring in some other examples of Teela here, too.
01:42Here's what she looks like, then, with the Origins version of her, the one that came in clue with Zor,
01:45and also the Cartoon Collection Teela, to try too hard to separate the accessories that both come in clue with the side compartment
01:51and those that were in the tray with Teela.
01:54In fact, the only thing that actually was in with Teela was her spear.
01:58The spear is really done nicely here in a gold plastic.
02:01As you can see, some decorative details adorn the blade here on the top.
02:05And this can, of course, be held in her hand.
02:07She does have, in case you're curious, two gripping hands already on the ends of her forearms.
02:12For the things that she does have, though, in side compartment tray,
02:14one thing that wasn't inside the bag, though, is that she does come in clue with her Serpent Scepter.
02:20Serpent Scepter.
02:22And boy, does it ever look good.
02:23I do like the coloring of it.
02:24It's not nearly the color, though, what we got with the spear.
02:27The spear clearly is more of a gold color.
02:28This is kind of more of a bronzish brown.
02:31Boy, I'm having a hard time getting that all out.
02:33It does have a little bit of gold down below here.
02:35It does look like something a Serpent-wise, like maybe Serpenter or Cobra Commander would have as well.
02:40And it does have a bend.
02:42Now, I think the bend is supposed to naturally be like this.
02:44I can't think, though, that this was warped inside the packaging.
02:47Because it was, I mean, there was enough quarters, obviously, to accommodate the Scepter sitting inside.
02:52Sitting alongside the Scepter, the figure came included with a baggie.
02:57Now, ripping open the bag, the figure does also have a shield.
03:00And she does also have the Empress crown or cowl piece, which will also be done in the Serpent theme.
03:08Color-wise, though, I mean, the shield does look like it better suits more like the spear.
03:13So, again, if you have the two displayed like this, I would imagine probably most people are probably going to be displaying Tila with the shield, with the spear.
03:21Not to make that an assumption, really.
03:22But the figure, like I said, does come included as well with the cowl piece.
03:27The cowl crest will then basically sit over top of her head in sort of the same way as the vintage toy.
03:31Or the closest thing in proximity, the origins figure of Tila I have here as well.
03:36Coloring-wise, though, instead of going with the brown that they went with the original toy, again, they went more with this kind of bronzish brown.
03:43I had an easier time getting it out this time.
03:46This basically will just fit over top of her head.
03:47I'm not going to do it just yet.
03:48I'm not going to do it just yet.
03:49Because there are things I want to discuss first.
03:53The figure does also come in clue with a couple of closed fists.
03:55Not the most exciting thing I granted, I understand.
03:58Just because, again, like if you're going to have the figure holding anything.
04:01Then having her with these on the ends of her forearms are going to defeat the purpose altogether.
04:08Let's talk a little bit about the shield here for a second.
04:10Now the shield obviously is going to fit over top of her hand.
04:13You basically slide it up her forearm like this and clip it around her hand.
04:16You can also as well take the hand off, clip it on the handle, then put the hand back onto the forearm.
04:22Or you can also just phone it in.
04:23You can just slide it really as far up the forearm as you can get it.
04:26And in most cases, it stays somewhat okay.
04:29I know it does.
04:30It could probably stay a little bit better.
04:32What's interesting, though, on the back of the packaging, they sort of sell,
04:35even the front of the packaging also does this as well,
04:38that the shield sits also on the back of her body.
04:40This is not something that you can perform successfully.
04:43There's no hook.
04:44There's nothing on the back of her body that allows the shield to sit there.
04:47So, though, while the front of the packaging that I will show in a second
04:50does sort of give the idea that Tila can actually have the shield on the back.
04:54It's not something that you can successfully do.
04:58Putting Tila down here for a second, can I just draw your attention?
05:01I'm going to bring the packaging right now.
05:03I found this was the same thing that they did with She-Ra, too.
05:06You get yourself really nice artwork here for Tila.
05:09And again, you can see the shield that's on the back of her body.
05:11I mean, it's only just there for the illustration.
05:13She does also have the serpent scepter in her hand as well.
05:17Just look, though, at the sculpt and the paint on the face.
05:20I say sculpt and paint like I'm sort of talking about the action figure.
05:23Sort of look at the drawing and the way it's colored.
05:26This is the way that Tila really should have been.
05:29This is not at all what we're getting here for Tila.
05:31And if you also just look on the back of the packaging,
05:34the face is, I think, still ugly.
05:37But they've done it with lighting, and of course, they've altered it, I'm sure, as well,
05:40just to make it look a little bit better than it actually is.
05:44Let's put that out of the way.
05:45So my big real issue with Tila, well, there's a few things, really.
05:48It isn't so much like from the neck down.
05:51From the neck down, it's fine.
05:53There are a few little issues worth color matching where the color doesn't quite match.
05:57You'll notice, like, for example, the top of her torso seems lighter
06:00than the colors on her arms as well as her legs.
06:03You can also look at it from the back as well to really see the difference in the change.
06:07I would imagine, though, they probably would have had to go in here and paint this skin color.
06:11And obviously, just starting with white plastic.
06:13These would have then been molded in skin tone.
06:16And you can see why the colors don't match there at all.
06:18This is an acceptable thing.
06:20Like, if this was the only QC issue with Tila, I would be fine for that.
06:24The biggest, biggest draw and fault for this figure still relies on her face.
06:30The face is disappointing.
06:32It's so funny, though, that even looking online,
06:34prior to ordering Tila and having her arrive to my doorstep,
06:37I had already known that there was issues, really, with her eyes.
06:41I wanted to also check online to listings that they had at Tila.
06:43And sure enough, most of the images all have Tila with these awkward-looking eyes.
06:48The eyes don't look fully painted on the eyeballs themselves.
06:52In fact, it actually looks like the eyeballs.
06:53It looks like she's always looking up at something.
06:56What is she looking at?
06:57I don't even know.
06:59The face is one thing, really, that with the eyes being the problem that they're looking up,
07:03it doesn't look like they're painted properly.
07:04It almost even really looks like she's just bored.
07:07Poor Tila.
07:10I would just think that this figure is going to be doing this a lot on my shelf.
07:15It isn't so much even just the fact that the eyes are done wrong,
07:18but if you look at the eyebrows,
07:19the eyebrows need to be a lot darker than what they actually are.
07:22I think also the lips could have been a little darker, too.
07:25There's not nearly enough contrasting colors here
07:28to pull attention away from the fact that the eyes are ugly.
07:31It also seems, too, like her hair is wrong.
07:34Boy, oh boy, we're going to have a whole list of problems here.
07:35The hair isn't so much the issue, I find.
07:38It is actually the tiara.
07:40By deciding to have the tiara sculpted on the top of her head
07:43and not being something that could have been moved forward,
07:46it does look like it's awkwardly placed.
07:49I think what I'd rather would have done,
07:51especially considering that you could put the headdress piece on her,
07:55I would have actually opted instead to have the tiara as a separate piece,
07:59separate altogether.
08:00One thing that would have accomplished,
08:02it would have allowed you then be able to move the tiara around
08:04to where you want to have it on the figure.
08:06It also meant it would have given some depth to the figure,
08:10because with the tiara sculpted the way that it is,
08:12it looks too conformed to her face.
08:15Does that make any sense?
08:17You need to have layers.
08:18You need to look at this and be able to see,
08:19okay, the tiara does look like it's a separate piece.
08:22It does need to have some foreground and some background to it.
08:25It just sort of all looks like it's all one molded piece,
08:28which essentially is what it is.
08:29Yeah, the tiara definitely needed to be lifted a bit.
08:32There's nothing, there's no enough space behind it.
08:35And it certainly did need to be moved forward.
08:37Not that that would have fixed at all the problem,
08:39because tiaras can't fix the fact that she has a really bad face.
08:44She-Ra also had the same problem as well,
08:46where I liked the design of She-Ra,
08:49but I thought it looked better on the packaging.
08:51The paint was the thing that really did let this figure down.
08:54I still don't like the headdress piece that she has,
08:57but I got to think, though,
08:58that if the face was only painted better,
09:00it probably would have really saved
09:02and made the figure look better than what it was.
09:04Tila, I feel, has that exact same problem.
09:07Body-wise, though, if you're looking at the two,
09:08it does look like they're using somewhat similar arms.
09:11Obviously, they would have had to tool
09:12a brand new band piece around her bicep.
09:15Different forearms, obvious in the sense
09:16they have different guards,
09:17but it does look like they are sharing similar legs,
09:20which draws even more attention to the fact
09:22that She-Ra is very pale.
09:24Very, very pale.
09:24But again, like the height-wise,
09:27you can definitely see that this is
09:28where they want to move forward
09:29when it comes to the sizing of female figures,
09:31that they do want to make them bigger
09:32than, let's say, the likes of Sorceress,
09:35which, again, will just bring back her mom here.
09:37Quite the considerable height difference,
09:38really, between the two.
09:39But if you look at, really,
09:40like the original Sorceress,
09:43the paint was fine.
09:44The face was fine.
09:45I don't know what's really been changed here,
09:47whether maybe they've changed the factories,
09:49maybe they've even changed the department
09:50responsible for painting these figures,
09:52but the head sculpts lately have been off.
09:55Eva Lynn, again, was the exception to that,
09:56but I had a problem with Eva Lynn
09:58because the top of her head was misaligned,
10:00and a couple of people had that also as well.
10:03If you overlook, like, this part,
10:04I almost really feel like somebody needs to go in there
10:06and repaint these faces.
10:08I have seen, though, some talented people online
10:10that have gone in and corrected Tila's face,
10:12and it does have considerable improvement
10:14to the look of the figure.
10:15The rest, though, of the look of the figure
10:17does look good, though.
10:17I like the way that they've sculpted her fur
10:20there on the top.
10:20Actually, she's got this fur collar around the top.
10:22She's got some nice real use of gold
10:24there on the front of her bodice there, too,
10:26and she's got a skirting down below as well.
10:27Now, this is actually all softer plastic
10:30that is over top of her body.
10:32It probably just would be so much simpler
10:34than having to retool a brand new piece like this.
10:36I mean, if they had to sculpt the body underneath,
10:39I would think that that probably would be more expensive
10:40than sculpting and only producing
10:42the part that goes over top of it.
10:44Again, the gold looks good.
10:45The fur and the boots look good as well.
10:47If you were to just look at this figure
10:49and you didn't see the face
10:50from a side or a back glance,
10:53you would think to yourself,
10:54that's not a bad-looking Teela,
10:55until, oh!
10:56Until, of course, you had to see the paint,
10:58the paint problems all across her face.
11:01So again, if you want to take yourself
11:03the headdress piece,
11:04how it really does work
11:05is it's friction-forced.
11:07Which, again, if you didn't have the tiara there,
11:09this tiara could have easily just been removed.
11:11I mean, I don't think you really would have had
11:14to need to put a hole there
11:15or anything like that
11:15just to keep the tiara in place.
11:17Providing it was shaped
11:18about the same size as her hair,
11:20the tiara could then have been something
11:21you just remove, you know,
11:23just remove it when you want to put on
11:24the headpiece, the head collar piece.
11:27And it basically, again, all it is,
11:29is it's, there's these little indentations
11:31on the side to fit basically around her ears.
11:33So when you fit this on her face,
11:35you want to kind of make sure
11:36that it's first a little bit more centered.
11:38Put this against her face
11:39and then just push it in there.
11:41I mean, that's all it really requires.
11:43It's not going to be going anywhere.
11:44You don't have to worry
11:45that the headdress piece
11:46is going to be falling off.
11:47I feel like it does fix the figure's face
11:49only by just a little bit.
11:51The sculpting of it looks really good too.
11:53And again, if you like the look
11:54of the classic tiara,
11:55you probably would end up
11:56displaying her like that.
11:57It really does depend on
11:58how you really want to have her
11:59displayed on the collection shelf.
12:01I think most of the time
12:02I've displayed my original Origins tiara
12:04with the headdress piece on
12:06because it looks more like
12:07the original toy.
12:08I might follow that same suit
12:09not just for the fact
12:11I want it to look like
12:11the original toy,
12:12but I think it also does
12:13kind of draw attention
12:14a little bit away
12:15from the fact that the paint
12:15has really let this figure down.
12:18For the figure's articulation,
12:20let's take this back off
12:21for here a second.
12:23Tila, with her tiara,
12:25does have a ball joint
12:26for her head.
12:27It doesn't give you granted
12:28much in the way of poseability.
12:30I mean, you can only again
12:31really move her head up and down
12:32just by a little bit.
12:33The head also rocks
12:34back and forth as well
12:35and you can rotate the head
12:36all the way around.
12:37Even though she does have
12:38a collar on the back of it,
12:39it doesn't seem to get
12:40in the way at all
12:41of allowing the head
12:42to do what it's doing right now.
12:44The arms do rotate
12:45all the way around.
12:47There's a hinge
12:47that allows easily
12:48for the arms to go out
12:49at a t-pose
12:50or even a little higher than that.
12:52The figure does have
12:52a swivel here in her forearm,
12:54a bend in the elbow,
12:55hands rotate all the way around
12:57and a hinge there as well.
12:58The upper torso
12:59is going to be on a ball joint.
13:01I say that term very loosely
13:02because it doesn't really
13:03do a whole lot.
13:05I mean, yes,
13:05it does rock back and forth
13:07more really than it does
13:08up and down.
13:09She does also have
13:10a waist swivel.
13:11Legs do split out.
13:12They're on ball joints.
13:13They go forward,
13:14they go back.
13:15There is, though,
13:15a gap space
13:16between the legs
13:17and the tops.
13:19You can bring them up
13:19just a little bit,
13:20but you'll always really notice
13:21that there's a gap right here.
13:23I think it's just to allow
13:24movement forward and back,
13:25but it does feel
13:26sort of like the legs
13:27struggle a bit
13:27to get a high kick going.
13:30I mean,
13:30as you push this up,
13:31you'll see.
13:32It does seem to want
13:33to force it back down.
13:34So the gap really
13:35doesn't do anything more
13:36than just being an eyesore.
13:37She does have a full leg split
13:39three quarters of the way
13:40up the thigh.
13:40The figure does have
13:41a leg swivel,
13:42so you can rotate
13:43that all the way around.
13:44She does have a double hinge
13:45in the knee.
13:45Yes, she does.
13:47Articulation here,
13:47though,
13:48in the top of the boots,
13:49an ankle pivot up and down,
13:50an ankle rocker there as well.
13:53So much so is wrong
13:54with Tila's face.
13:56So much so is right
13:56with the rest
13:57of Tila's body.
13:58Yeah, there are
13:59a few little issues,
13:59obviously having to go in there
14:01and paint the skin tone
14:02over white plastic
14:03did then result
14:04in having the torso
14:05being a little lighter
14:06of a skin coloring
14:06than her arms,
14:08than her legs.
14:09But that's a small thing
14:10with the greater problem
14:11really being her face.
14:13It again is really a reminder
14:14when we looked at She-Ra
14:15that She-Ra was,
14:17I think,
14:17a fine figure.
14:18I know some people
14:18didn't really like
14:19the look of her armor.
14:20I liked what they were going with,
14:21but I liked it a lot more
14:22when I saw it on the packaging.
14:24Tila, I feel,
14:25really feels the same way.
14:26When you look at
14:27the packaging of her,
14:28and I'm just going to
14:28leave that here,
14:29there's not really
14:31much change
14:31between the original idea
14:33and the illustration of her
14:34to how she's then
14:35interpreted in plastic,
14:36but something so went wrong
14:38when it came to
14:39painting her face.
14:40The tiara needed to be bigger.
14:41I felt like it needed
14:42to be more to the foreground.
14:44It needed to be
14:45really a separate piece
14:46so it gave some sense
14:47of depth
14:47to the figures,
14:48to the hair.
14:49But the face is really
14:50the thing that lets
14:51the figure down the most.
14:52I wish that the eyebrows
14:53would have maybe been painted
14:54kind of in a dark red.
14:56There would have been
14:56a little bit more
14:57like eye shadow
14:58or something around the eyes
14:59just to give it
15:00a little bit of layers to it.
15:01It just feels like the figure.
15:04The lower half of the body,
15:05I feel,
15:05like feels like
15:06a Mattel release.
15:07The face does feel
15:09like it's a knockoff
15:10and I hate to really say it
15:11the way that I am
15:12because, again,
15:12like if you look at the way
15:13that they've illustrated Tila
15:15on the front,
15:16on the side,
15:17it's a great looking design
15:19of the character,
15:20but it so terribly
15:21lets the figure down
15:22when you actually
15:23see it in hand.
15:24Again,
15:25what I might just end up doing,
15:26as I did mention earlier,
15:28is I might take, though,
15:29the serpent headdress piece
15:30and put that actually
15:31on her face
15:32just to take attention
15:33away from the fact
15:34that they really
15:35let the figure down
15:36when it comes to the paint.
15:37So what went wrong
15:37with Tila?
15:38Well, I can tell you
15:39what went wrong with Tila.
15:40It was her face.
15:41The face,
15:42you gotta think,
15:43I really would have liked
15:44to have seen
15:44what the prototype
15:45would have looked like
15:45all done in gray.
15:46You know, of course,
15:47before they get
15:47the final production shots
15:48of what the figure
15:49is going to look like.
15:50I would have liked
15:51to have seen
15:51the unpainted head sculpt.
15:53Just to say,
15:54just to be able
15:55to 100% say,
15:56well, the face was ugly
15:57right from the moment
15:58it was molded.
15:59I don't think
15:59that was the case at all.
16:00I think what we may have had,
16:01like we would have had
16:02with Shira,
16:03was probably a really good
16:04molded face
16:05long before it went
16:06to the paint department.
16:07Somehow,
16:08between the production
16:09of the mold
16:09and what we finally got
16:10in the finalized figure,
16:12something again
16:13missed its mark.
16:15And again,
16:15I could be the person
16:16just behind the camera.
16:17No experience at all,
16:18I can say,
16:19when it comes to developing,
16:20producing,
16:21or manufacturing figures.
16:22But I can tell you
16:23what I like
16:23and what I don't.
16:24And there are things
16:25that when I look at Teal,
16:26I think to myself,
16:27yeah, the tiara
16:28needed to be a separate piece.
16:29It needed to be higher.
16:31It needed to be further forward
16:32on the front of her face.
16:33And there definitely
16:34need to be a lot more paint,
16:36a lot more time spent
16:37to perfect things
16:39like her eyebrows,
16:40darker colors
16:41around her eyes,
16:42and maybe even adding
16:43a little bit of extra
16:43coloring to her lips.
16:45Because unfortunately,
16:46though,
16:46that's the thing
16:47that you're going to be
16:47continuing to look at
16:48on a figure.
16:49The rest of the body
16:50could be still fine
16:51and have all the possibility
16:52that it should have.
16:53But if it lets you down
16:54in the face,
16:55that's the one thing
16:56that you're going to be
16:56constantly looking at
16:57and constantly being bothered by
16:59every time you get
17:00a glance of her.
17:01Now, I've got her currently
17:02with the shield in one hand.
17:03I had to take,
17:04obviously,
17:04the hand off the forearm,
17:06slip it onto the handle,
17:07pop the hand back in place.
17:09That's what the possible,
17:11the professionals all do
17:12when it comes to attaching shield.
17:14And then, of course,
17:14I've got the spear
17:15in her other hand.
17:16Not really going to be the way,
17:17I'm not going to be really the way
17:18I'm going to have
17:19the figure displayed.
17:20Instead, choose and go
17:21with the serpent empress,
17:22the goddess.
17:23I'm going to have her
17:23displayed that way.
17:24I think just for one reason,
17:26because, again,
17:26I want to have her look
17:27kind of like the vintage toy.
17:29But again,
17:29like I said earlier,
17:30I think it's going to draw
17:31more attention away
17:32from her face.
17:32We don't want to draw
17:33attention too much
17:34to her face.
17:35We want to do the opposite.

17:51in this video.
17:51I have actually, in fact,
17:53looked at several
17:54Tila listings online.
17:56And even the up-close shots
17:57all have Tila with wonky eyes.
17:59Why did Tila have to have
