00:00The worst performance coach happened in Blacksburg. We talked about Brent Pryde being potentially on the hot seat. They opened as a seven and a half point home favorite to Old Dominion. The line right before kick got as low as five points. Virginia Tech started slow yet again, and they lose it in dominating fashion to the Monarchs. They get blown out 45 to 26. And Brent Pryde after the game was fired.
00:28And Virginia Tech is 0-3, and they're reeling right now.
00:32Yeah, and you know what? There's so much more to this. I mean, the word I got out of Virginia Tech is that he was gone. They had heard. They knew he was going to be fired. And that's the way they went into that football game. It was a demoralizing thing.
00:45When the fans really don't want you to win because they want a new coach, and the administration is at that point, too, the players pick up on it. I mean, they were down 28-0 at halftime.
00:56They had two turnovers. Then ODU turned into touchdowns, and it was over before it started.
01:02The team was not—I don't want to say they quit, but there was no desire or incentive to play.
01:09And that's a sad thing because the players end up losing as much as anybody, but they were going to make that change,
01:15and they needed some reason to make it quick, and this is the reason they got to make it quick.
01:20But I'll say this. It takes situations like that because if you looked at every single individual athlete at Virginia Tech on that team
01:28and compared them body-to-body next to those at ODU, there would be more better athletes at Virginia Tech than at ODU.
01:35But the atmosphere over there at Old Dominion is a little different than what's going on at Virginia Tech.
01:40They were ready to make a change, and you know what? Now they're going to have to make one.
01:43And you and I were in agreement, you know, from their week one loss to South Carolina.
01:48That was impressive because they went toe-to-toe with a very physical offense and defense alliance coming out of the SEC.
01:55South Carolina was viewed as one of the better teams within the conference, and they lost it by 11 points.
02:01With a bounce back against Vanderbilt in week number two, they have a double-digit first-half lead against the Commodores,
02:08and then all of a sudden the wheels fall off again, and they get blown out 44-20 in the second half.
02:15So the mindset for Brent Prye and that team were not good entering week number three.
02:20And I think the bigger question now is, who could we suggest or who is capable of turning around the program?
02:29Is it, does Virginia Tech try and lure Shane Beamer from South Carolina,
02:34knowing that Beamer's father brought Virginia Tech to prominence?
02:37You know what, they're going to have to decide how serious their commitment they are.
02:41And I'll say it's about Shane Beamer.
02:43Does he want to go back to Purdue Tech and follow the legend that is Frank Beamer?
02:48Because Frank Beamer is a legend.
02:50He built that school, that football program where it is.
02:53I went through this when my father was a legend, even more so.
02:58I did not want to be a, I don't think either Tommy, my brother,
03:01wanted to go to Florida State and have to live that thing every minute.
03:05Because no matter what you do, you're probably not going to live up to that.
03:08So Shane went there, he played there, he coached there.
03:13I got a feeling he's got to think twice whether he wants to be the guy.
03:17But he may decide, let's go do it.
03:19But there'll be a, and I'll say the school has got to make a commitment.
03:24Not just because you're Virginia Tech doesn't mean the players are going to come
03:27without a whole lot of NIL money that'll attract portal transfers to Virginia Tech.
03:33Salaries that will bring in the top assistant coaches and the top head coaches.
03:38They're way below all that stuff right now.
03:40They're way below that.
03:41When Frank Beamer, just like with my father was at Florida State,
03:44and Frank Beamer was at Virginia Tech, NIL wasn't there.
03:47Portal transfers weren't there.
03:49Now you've got to have money.
03:50You better put money into the program for salaries and for players.
03:54I agree, and I think also, too, we've seen them go the route of, you know,
04:00out of the ACC.
04:01They got Justin Fuentes from Memphis.
04:05They take Brent Prye, the defensive coordinator at Penn State.
04:08I think they might be better off potentially getting a hot coordinator
04:12within the conference, someone that understands the landscape
04:16as opposed to going out and bringing in somebody that is not recognizable
04:20with the fame of Blacksburg.
04:22Do you agree with that type of mindset?
04:25Yeah, to be honest with you, you're probably better off finding someone
04:29that's on the verge of greatness, that can be right there at the edge
04:33of getting it all done.
04:35And sometimes that's hard to identify, but that's what a good athletic director
04:38and a committee have got to do is to find that guy.
04:40Because I don't think, you know, I've heard Jimbo Fisher's name.
04:44You know, now would he want to go there?
04:46Can he win?
04:47Because he doesn't want to just go to a Division I.
04:48He wants to go somewhere where he can win.
04:51And that's the key.
04:53So a coordinator who wants to prove himself may be the best indication.
04:57Let me go back to that.
04:58Shane Beamer would be great.
05:00I love Shane Beamer.
05:01What job he's done.
05:02But I don't know that he could go from South Carolina to Virginia Tech.
05:06Oh, god.
05:06Let me go.
