00:01When it comes to chasing criminals...
00:03We've got a job on already.
00:05Two wheels...
00:05Are better than four.
00:08We are off-road.
00:10Where police cars have to stop...
00:12Can't stop that.
00:14The biker cops keep going...
00:16He's driven across the fields.
00:19And nowhere is off-limits.
00:21He does have warning markers for...
00:23Weapons, baseball, bad violence.
00:25Coming towards you now.
00:26Riding to catch suspects...
00:29I'll carry on and do my job as I see fit.
00:30Is that all right?
00:31Book me then.
00:32Oh, damn.
00:32Kill you, that.
00:34Racing to save lives.
00:36This lady's in and out of consciousness.
00:38I'm looking for a ride on the...
00:40It's a car versus a bar bike.
00:42If it goes wrong...
00:43It goes wrong spectacularly.
00:47They are the UK's fastest responders.
00:50What are you playing at?
00:51Stay there.
00:52I'm almost right under arrest.
00:53Coming up.
01:00A traffic accident leaves officers searching for answers.
01:04Dear me.
01:05Absolute carnage.
01:07Biker cops hunt for wanted suspects after a mini-crime wave.
01:11Shots have just come in.
01:13They believe that it's three females.
01:15A bank holiday crash forces lockdown.
01:18Biter's not breathing.
01:19And a dangerous driver goes off-road and on the run.
01:23You're under arrest for dangerous driving.
01:24You fail to stop.
01:25Oh.
01:26You have many staff on today, Jack.
01:35I'm doing all right, actually.
01:36It's not horrendous.
01:37OK.
01:39Hello, 537.
01:40Hi, I'm not.
01:41Hello, mate.
01:42You all right?
01:44It's the start of a busy weekend for biker cop Paul Buckley.
01:48He chases suspects and bad drivers on a 1250cc BMW motorbike with a top speed of 140 miles
02:05an hour.
02:07Really, I've got a kind of golden ticket.
02:10You feel it more.
02:11You do feel the exhilaration of speed.
02:13Paul's one of 15 biker cops patrolling North Yorkshire on a fleet of marked bikes, an unmarked
02:21Kawasaki capable of 180 miles an hour, and four off-road dirt bikes.
02:32You lean into corners.
02:34For me, it's more exhilarating.
02:36Across 3,000 square miles of some of Britain's most dangerous roads.
02:43I've got an R2-2-3 coming in.
02:4937, you go.
02:50Motorbike purchase car.
02:52I've got no other detail at the minute.
02:56At the weekends, North Yorkshire attracts thousands of bikers, but all too often with tragic consequences.
03:05OK, I'm on an all-time bike.
03:06Being on a bike, Paul can reach the scene faster than patrol cars, so he's dispatched.
03:18It's on a popular biking route in the Dales, 60 miles away.
03:23It's an awful long way to go.
03:25I'm concerned that I get there as quick as I can.
03:30As Paul makes his way...
03:33I've got something shot at me, sorry.
03:35Yes, Sergeant, I've got an R2-3.
03:38I'll start heading towards...
03:40His Sergeant, Julian Pearson, is also en route.
03:43It's a car versus bar, mate.
03:45We've held a company unit that's got no unit to assist.
03:49Pass it by and go through CPR.
03:50Over the last three years, 30 riders have died across the Yorkshire Dales, and dozens more seriously injured.
03:58It's up near a very popular route for bikers.
04:03Just let me know when the first unit gets to go.
04:06How much have arrived on the scene?
04:11Where's the driver, isn't it?
04:12Back in the abyss.
04:14Bikes and that, isn't it?
04:20Paul approaches the scene as the driver of the car is rushed to hospital.
04:27It's a female car driver.
04:30He's going to be taken to Aedre Hospital to have that injury checked.
04:35And there's an update on the rider's condition.
04:38I believe the trauma is incompatible with bikes.
04:43The bike rider is deceased.
04:45I don't know the force hurts, but obviously there's them coming near that.
05:00I do know that it's a fatal.
05:03I've had personal loss.
05:05So I know how hard it is to lose someone close to you.
05:10So we'll do it best we can now to get to the bottom of what's going on.
05:15There's going to be family members who are going to need answers.
05:19I need to piece it together and build a story up using the debris pan where the bike is laid.
05:26Who has caused this incident?
05:35It is a nice day.
05:37So there might be quite a few bikes out.
05:38As well as dealing with bad smashes, biker cops like PC Paddy Green target wanted and illegal drivers.
05:47I think the inspector was out on the electric bike yesterday.
05:55Was he?
05:55And I've just noticed there's scrapes all down the side of it.
05:59I think the boss might be buying some cakes.
06:01Oh, has he fallen off it?
06:02When I was at school, we had a careers teacher and she asked me what I wanted to do.
06:07And I remember telling her that I was going to get paid to ride a motorbike one day.
06:11And she said, that wasn't going to happen.
06:17I thought, here we are.
06:24On the outskirts of York, Paddy's on the hunt for an illegal driver.
06:30Yeah, we've just had a rival sight of the vehicle.
06:32It was an NPR hit for a vehicle with no tax, no insurance.
06:37A police camera alert has triggered a search for a silver Astra van.
06:41The vehicle was silver.
06:43Nearby, there's a sighting.
06:44We're just getting a report now.
06:50One of my colleagues, having checked it through, follows it and it reacts.
06:55There's two sort of people that behave like that when faced by the police.
07:05Criminals or people that are just desperate to keep their driving licence or their car.
07:11Because, you know, it means a lot to a lot of people.
07:13It's their livelihood.
07:16As Paddy speeds up to support his colleague,
07:21the suspect, Astra, disappears off-road.
07:24We went down the farm track.
07:27Some rides are off-road for now.
07:31With Paddy and officers surrounding the area.
07:37The Astra driver is spotted trying to hide behind a farm building.
07:49And he makes a break for it in a desperate attempt to escape.
07:54Coming up...
08:03The vehicle's probably headed in their room.
08:05The pursuit of the driver goes off-road.
08:08He's driven across the fields.
08:10What are you playing at?
08:11We'll do the best we can now to get to the bottom of what's going on.
08:14And biker cop Paul looks for the cause of the fatal crash.
08:19His rev counter's on 10,500 roads.
08:21Good grief.
08:36Yeah, we've just had a arrival site of the vehicle.
08:38It was named for a vehicle with no tax, no insurance.
08:42Near York, biker cop Paddy Green and other officers are pursuing a suspected disqualified driver in a silver Astra van.
08:53Went on the farm track.
08:55Some rides, lots, lots for now.
08:57The mentality, I don't know if it's, they take the brain out sometimes, but it's just frustrating because it leads to crashes.
09:06The suspect made a dash for it off-road, but after trying to hide from the cops, he's back on the road again, desperate to get away.
09:17It's a loss-loss.
09:25Vehicle is plenty headed in stereo.
09:28I think they're still out there now.
09:30Put up description of them.
09:34Having the details of the car, we've got an idea of who should be driving it.
09:39We know where the car lives or where it should be.
09:42We've got some really good controllers in our control room, and they can look at us on mapping and help us out by putting us in just the right places to sort of tighten that net around somebody.
09:59Nearby, another unit catches sight of the Astra.
10:05There are now three cars and biker cop Paddy hunting for the runaway driver.
10:12Yeah, it's a visual loss at the moment.
10:15Yeah, I've got him in the distance.
10:16He is heading towards a home address.
10:18My lights are illuminated now.
10:20He's aware of my presence.
10:21This will be a fail to stop.
10:23Unnamed road, zero traffic, zero pedestrians, good conditions.
10:28I'm T-pack trained in a suitable vehicle.
10:31Authority to continue, please.
10:33Again, it's another visual loss at this time.
10:35Yeah, that's the three, Ben.
10:36A passing bus driver could have information about the driver's location.
10:42Has a van come back past you?
10:44I did see a van.
10:45The car just flew past me.
10:46Right.
10:46OK, thank you.
10:49Sorry, I've just stopped to talk to a bus driver.
10:52The vehicle has gone past him, so it is still continuing at the home address.
10:56I've lost ground on it now.
10:57I've got your mapping area, is that correct?
11:01Yeah, thanks.
11:01Will you go to Trifthown?
11:02You know, what do you do with the car just flying past me?
11:05So, with the help of the controllers, they identify a back lane where it might be able
11:11to pop out on through some fields.
11:13I was on the motorbike, so it was quite easy for me to get down these back lanes.
11:18With the Astra going off-road and the cars unable to follow, Paddy takes the bike cross-country.
11:23Yeah, go on.
11:29He'll not be far from you now.
11:30Get ready, mate.
11:31They've got an ETA for two minutes, so I don't know.
11:33He'll get there first.
11:37We'd been chasing after him for quite a while.
11:41My concern was that he'd go from a car chase to a foot chase.
11:45As other patrols circle the area, Paddy's able to go off-road near the suspect's address.
11:50Making some further enquiries.
11:52Start drifting up that way.
11:54I'll come back to you when I've got the information.
11:58Approaching some fields, Paddy spots the suspect.
12:04I am going to put these on.
12:08You're under arrest for dangerous driving, fail to stop.
12:11Driving whilst disqualifying driving out of insurance.
12:13There's so often in this job where you end up in the wrong place at the wrong time, and
12:19it's so annoying.
12:23Driver and vehicle detained at my location.
12:27And sometimes you just happen to be in the right place at the right time.
12:30Across here, where the tree line is.
12:32Have you driven down this track here?
12:33Across the field, yeah.
12:35He's driven across the fields.
12:36What are you playing at?
12:38I just didn't know what to do.
12:40I'm sorry.
12:40No.
12:41I'm sorry, officer.
12:46Already disqualified, the man now faces another driving ban, a hefty fine, and a possible prison
12:53sentence.
12:54During the summer, the Yorkshire Dales become a mecca for bikers.
13:06Especially at weekends.
13:08But all too often, it ends in tragedy.
13:11Biker cop Paul Buckley has raced 60 miles through the Dales to a serious collision between a
13:25car and a motorbike.
13:29I don't know the force works, but obviously there's some coming here.
13:32I do know that it's a fatal.
13:35The driver is being rushed to hospital, but the rider tragically couldn't be saved, and
13:41it has died.
13:42In the weekends, we see thousands of bikers come up, particularly on a bank holiday weekend.
13:47But along with that, there is a lot more incidents happening involving bikers.
13:54We'll do it best we can now to get to the bottom of what's going on.
14:01As somebody has lost their life...
14:045, 5, 7, 7, 6.
14:05Paul's sergeant Julian Pearson and crash investigator Richard Barker are now on scene to carry out
14:13a detailed investigation.
14:17How old's Ryder?
14:19He was in his 50s.
14:21Didn't he?
14:23The scene really is one of absolute carnage.
14:27The bike was barely recognisable.
14:30Well, I've never seen anything like it, really.
14:34It doesn't matter who's right or wrong.
14:36You're vulnerable, are you, on the bike?
14:37Yeah.
14:38Yeah, sir.
14:39I mean, the forces involved are unbelievable in this case, as it's been thrown through the
14:44air at 40 to 60 feet.
14:46Right.
14:50The deceased, basically, we need to move him.
14:53So it's going to take a bit of help, really.
15:03We're all going to work together.
15:13It was the worst part of being a traffic officer.
15:17But you just remain detached.
15:19And you know that there's a job that we've got to do.
15:22So, unfortunately, it's a sad bit of the job.
15:25For family members, we need to confirm exactly what his name is.
15:28We have to search him to locate an ID card.
15:33So he's got a family.
15:35Yeah, and I expected to see him back this tea time.
15:36And asking him, that's how his ride went.
15:39That's not what happened, is it?
15:45With the rider taken away, attention turns to the crash site.
15:52That isn't a 60 mile an hour impact.
15:54No.
15:55No dash cam in that?
15:56None that she's mentioned.
15:57But she's in a bit of a state.
15:58We've got somebody going through to Aedale Hospital to get a blood sample in case there's any medication
16:03issues with her.
16:05A blood test will determine if the driver was fit to drive.
16:08And what's the marks down there coming up the hill?
16:13That's what we're going to need to see how you to look at.
16:19Rich Barker combs through the crash debris for clues to the cause of the collision.
16:24It's treated like a crime scene.
16:26The collision investigator, he'll evidence where parts are found, where exactly the car was found, where exactly the bike was found.
16:34At this early stage, you come up with a few hypotheses about what may have happened.
16:42You don't ruin the thing in, you don't ruin the thing out.
16:45It's purely about gathering the evidence at this point in time.
16:49His rev counter's on 10 and a half thousand revs.
16:54Good.
16:55Great.
16:55We saw the speedometer and rev cams from the motorcycle.
17:01It kind of indicate that the bike was going, I would estimate, at high speed.
17:07Paul's bike cams and expertise give investigators valuable insight.
17:12My motorcycle, for the viewpoint of the rider as it comes over that crest, will give a better representation for the collision investigator.
17:20And I can certainly give a motorcyclist perspective.
17:29I regularly come on this stretch.
17:31The only slight thing about this point in the road is there's a crest.
17:35And if you haven't got the view, then you come to an head-on car, then it's going to end in tears, which it has done.
17:44It's the hidden bit that perhaps what's caught a note.
17:47Julian and Rich check the point of impact.
17:54She definitely hasn't been on the verge.
17:56No, I've been all the way down.
17:57Both tyres inflated.
17:59Probably coming over, trying to angle it straight forward.
18:02And obviously, the closure of the curves.
18:04Somewhere around right here.
18:07He's been catapulted to where our number, where number two is.
18:11And then?
18:12He's tumbled at three.
18:13It's signed correctly, isn't it?
18:17Yeah.
18:19So, yeah, unfortunate.
18:24The passenger compartment has remained pretty intact, and that's what modern cars do.
18:29Motorbikes, there is no option, but they don't do that.
18:31It will now be up to Rich's report to conclude what's happened, and who, if anyone, was at fault.
18:47This has been a bad day for all concerned.
18:49It's a bad day for family members.
18:51It's a bad day for us.
18:52All the things we see, it affects us, so there's a lot going through my mind as a police officer and as a biker.
19:03After seeing how dangerous biking can be, Paul faces another biker's challenge on his journey back to the station.
19:12With bad weather intensifying and visibility getting worse.
19:16I can see the clouds rolling in, and they're becoming a very dark sky.
19:25The heavens open.
19:27I'm losing sight of the road.
19:31I don't particularly trust sweat roads and motorcycles.
19:35There's massive visibility issue.
19:41I can see a van that's coming towards me.
19:44My lane.
19:52Good to left to avoid a head-on collision.
19:56I see my life flash before me.
20:07An absolutely crazy move.
20:09Thankfully, I was nearly taken head-on for my bike.
20:18Back at base, Paul's thankful he's in one piece.
20:21But what he's seen today is a big reality check.
20:25Why don't I just get rid of my bike entirely?
20:27Would that be a sensible thing to do?
20:29Because I've got a family.
20:30It's things like this, I just bring it home to you, how vulnerable we are.
20:35I was just lucky that I wasn't immune and fatal.
20:37Around 15 motorcyclists are seriously injured or killed every day in the UK.
20:44With millions of vehicles travelling through North Yorkshire all year round,
20:58biker cops like Paddy Green are always looking for illegal drivers.
21:01When I'm riding past cars on the motorway, you can see right into them.
21:07It's often a lot quicker to get to an incident on a bike than it is in a car.
21:11Kids never wave at you in cars either.
21:12Kids always wave at the bike.
21:15Accent all traffic units.
21:17Disqualified driver.
21:18Yes, sir?
21:21747, you're north or south?
21:23847, you're north or south?
21:24847, you're north or south?
21:25847, you're north or south?
21:26847, you're north or south?
21:28Paddy's responding to a sighting of a suspected banned driver, 10 miles away.
21:34I think it might come down our way.
21:37Do you want to start in Jordan?
21:39I am starting.
21:42The standard of driving of some of these people who choose to ride a vehicle illegally is pretty poor.
21:50It poses a danger to them or other road users and they're often linked to criminality.
21:56We're just going to enter that one.
22:05Paddy pulls up ahead of the suspect and lies in wait.
22:11It's a local Intel market.
22:14It's about six months to go to the ride.
22:17Yeah, we see.
22:19We'll just look to see if we can see the car, stop it and find out who the driver is.
22:25Go ahead.
22:27Stand by.
22:28I've got it.
22:29We're all trained in tactical pursuit and containment and if for whatever reason somebody does fail to stop, if you're on a motorcycle you can pursue that vehicle until you've got all the chess pieces in the right place to bring it to a safe tactical resolution.
22:51Hitting 100 miles an hour.
23:01Paddy makes up ground on the suspect.
23:05Further behind, colleague Joe Moore is racing to provide backup.
23:12Joe Moore is racing to provide backup.
23:14We'll just make catch up.
23:20I'm behind that on Xavier now.
23:22Have to bring it off the services.
23:23All right, manager.
23:25Coming up, Paddy's chase takes a sinister turn.
23:29He does have firefighters and more weapons, baseball bats, violence.
23:30And it's a race to save another rider's life.
23:39The rider has sort of slaving gone under this car.
23:42In North Yorkshire, biker cops like Paddy's chase and more.
23:46He does have firefighters and more weapons, baseball bats, violence.
23:51And it's a race to save another rider's life.
23:54The rider has sort of slaving gone under this car.
23:57The rider has sort of slaving gone under this car.
24:02In North Yorkshire, biker cops like Paddy Green are the fastest police responders.
24:12I'm behind that on Xavier now.
24:15A police camera alert has come in about a wanted disqualified driver.
24:20747-0, vehicle just busted.
24:24Let's bring it off the services.
24:26AMPR is a fantastic tool.
24:35It helps us identify criminals on the road network
24:39and people using vehicles illegally on the road.
24:42All right, monitor, thank you.
24:44As Paddy signals for the driver to follow,
24:47colleague Joe Moore closes in to provide backup.
24:52747, vehicle appears to be compliant.
24:55What's the purpose of your journey today?
25:10I just go to Newcastle to meet a friend of mine.
25:13Have you got a driving licence, buddy?
25:15Cheers, mate.
25:21Interesting.
25:22Yeah.
25:23It's produced an Albanian licence.
25:26We'll just chime in there.
25:28Joe updates control.
25:30Have they given an address?
25:32Are there any chance?
25:33Can you just check that?
25:34Where do you live, buddy?
25:36I'm just checking in now.
25:39Yeah, he's got previous arrests for GBH.
25:42He does have warning markers for weapons based on violence.
25:47The man isn't the disqualified driver linked to police intel.
25:51But the checks raise other suspicions.
25:54We've got the insurance.
25:57He is on the insurance.
25:58Happier's licence is a real licence.
26:00Right.
26:01From Albania?
26:02Yeah.
26:03How long have you been in the UK?
26:05I live in the UK for like five years.
26:08If you've got an EU driving licence, you can drive in the UK.
26:12If you're outside of the EU, you've got 12 months from point of entry to change to a UK driving licence.
26:20Last year I started to drive.
26:22Is he on PNC?
26:24I'm just checking in now.
26:29Just for information, he does have six points on his licence.
26:32And that was an offence date of 2022.
26:37The man's driving offence was over two years ago.
26:41He's already got six points to Conviction 2023.
26:45Oh, right.
26:46Well, he's been driving for more than a year then, hasn't he?
26:47Yeah.
26:48And if you choose to drive illegally, and it goes wrong,
26:53you have got a responsibility for your own actions.
26:56I'm going to caution you, so you don't have to say anything,
26:58but it may only be defensive if you do not mention one question,
27:00something from which you later align in court.
27:02When you're driving in the UK from outside of the EU, you've got one year.
27:05Your driving conviction is from two years ago,
27:08so you've been driving for well over a year.
27:10So I'm reporting you for driving otherwise in accordance with your licence.
27:14You're not licenced to drive this vehicle on the road,
27:17so we're going to take it.
27:19All right.
27:20Can you just give me a warning, man?
27:22I don't like that.
27:23Mate, you've had five years.
27:24So what?
27:25You'll have to get a lift or a taxi or a train or something like that.
27:30Illegal drivers, they're often linked to criminality,
27:33and from the public's perspective, they've had enough of him.
27:40He'll be dealt with through the court system for that,
27:42and he's clearly not a very good driver because he's got six points.
27:45Near Harrigan, biker cop Paul Buckley is back on the weekend shift,
28:02and the good weather is attracting hundreds of bikers to North Yorkshire's roads.
28:06The roads that are up here are some of the best in the country.
28:13But along with that, there is a lot more good traffic collisions involving bikers and cars.
28:19If you come off your bike, you're in a vulnerable position.
28:23Extentual traffic units.
28:3030-37, you go.
28:3270-22 steering, car bus and motorbike.
28:40Okay, I've got a new topbike.
28:48Initially the rider was underneath the car.
28:53Fire on route.
28:57What's going through my mind is we'll only be quick enough to get there
29:00to be able to assist and prevent problems deteriorating further
29:04where we might potentially lose life.
29:07Paul's sergeant Julian Pearson is also on his way to the incident,
29:10which involves a middle-aged rider with a group of bikers, including his son.
29:16How's it been graded as serious?
29:19Bikers not breathing.
29:20All right. Heli-med are on route.
29:24Simple. It's not sounding too good, is it?
29:27It's not breathing there, no.
29:32Paul's on the back seat. He's going to get there before me.
29:39The rider has stopped breathing.
29:41This is serious injury or it's going to be worse.
29:45Just watch your back, you gents.
29:45For the safety of the rider being able to be airlifted away,
29:53the helicopters need clear passage.
29:56He's turning around, he's turning around.
29:58So we need to lock the seam down as quick as we can.
30:02One door more coming this way.
30:07There's no closure on the far side.
30:09There is no seam management at the moment.
30:11Will we just continue on here?
30:16Yes, yes.
30:17Straight through.
30:18To four.
30:20With a major incident unfolding,
30:23other emergency services are on scene,
30:25but the road is still open.
30:28Paul needs to act fast and shut the road.
30:30I'll get these clothes set up for the start.
30:34OK.
30:35Coming through.
30:36Go that way.
30:36Spin around.
30:38Yeah.
30:39Damn it.
30:42Have you got the car, Reg, involved, the VW Golf?
30:46Yeah, I've got a car and I've got the bike riding.
30:50As the rider's injuries are potentially life-changing,
30:53the air ambulance needs to get into hospital fast.
30:56But first it needs to find somewhere to land.
31:00The rider has slid and gone under this car.
31:04And I believe he's been removed from underneath the car.
31:07The bike is always vulnerable.
31:08It just brings it home how vulnerable you are.
31:11So he's had breathing difficulties,
31:14and it is serious potential fatal.
31:16And that at the moment is how I'm treating it.
31:20We're thinking of seam preservation.
31:22We need to secure the vehicles where they are
31:24so that no-one touches them or moves them.
31:27I want to ensure that witnesses stay at the scene
31:29so we can get an account of what was happening
31:32and build a picture of what caused this collision,
31:35who was at fault.
31:37Show me six.
31:40While Paul takes charge of seam preservation,
31:46Julian receives an update on the casualty.
31:48How are we looking?
31:49Ambo are working on him at the moment.
31:51Is he riding with these others?
31:53He is, yes.
31:54All these other bikers he was with,
31:55and that's his son.
31:58Right, OK.
32:00With the helicopter finally on the ground,
32:02medics prepare to airlift him to a trauma centre 40 miles away.
32:06He speaks to his son.
32:11Which area are you all from?
32:12Cardiff.
32:13Right.
32:14And then we were just on a weekend.
32:16I was ahead of him.
32:17And he came back?
32:19Were you kind of the lead biker then?
32:22Right, OK.
32:22I was going to take you before the bend there,
32:24and then I heard that something had happened,
32:27so I just went around.
32:28To come back.
32:30He's an advanced motorcycle instructor.
32:33Yeah.
32:33If you just bear with us,
32:35because the priority is obviously getting him away,
32:37getting him sorted out.
32:39What kind of level of injury are we talking about?
32:40Broken pelvis, eternal bleeding.
32:44Right.
32:44It is serious, potential fatal.
32:47There's going to be all kinds of thoughts
32:49going through his son's mind.
32:51He's going to be worried
32:52whether he's going to pull through.
32:54I'm going to take you down to James Bond.
32:56OK.
32:57And I'm going to take you with the helicopter.
32:58OK.
32:59I'll make my way there.
33:03As the casualty is airlifted to hospital...
33:07Check the bikes,
33:08make sure we haven't got any GoPros
33:09or anything on any of the bikes.
33:11The investigation continues.
33:13There's no dash cameras,
33:14nothing I can see at all.
33:17See you later.
33:20And some of his friends leave the scene.
33:23Obviously, I appreciate you might be in shock.
33:25Julian speaks to the driver
33:27who collided with the casualty.
33:29First thing I need to do
33:29is probably just breath test you.
33:31Just because it's mandatory,
33:31you're going to need to do it.
33:34Take it here, Brett.
33:35Pop your lips around there.
33:37They blurred you going.
33:38Well, thank you, that'll do.
33:40OK, that's negative.
33:42The driver says she was indicating
33:44to turn right.
33:45Were you indicating to turn?
33:47Braked
33:47and was pulling out
33:49when the biker came from behind
33:50and the collision happened.
33:54It's OK.
33:55And which way was the bike coming from?
33:56The biker went over the bonnet
33:58Coming from behind you.
33:59and under the car.
34:01Send her home.
34:05And we can speak to her later.
34:07Despite the driver's account...
34:09We need answers
34:10to determine what's happened.
34:12It's still unclear
34:13what caused the crash.
34:18Witness statements
34:19are essential.
34:20Your mind can play tricks on you.
34:22Sometimes their version of an event
34:25isn't as it actually panned out.
34:26Paul and Julian take a closer look
34:30at the crash scene.
34:31She stops here
34:33and indicates last minute
34:35and breaks suddenly.
34:36And then the bike
34:37obviously then
34:37hasn't got enough room to stop.
34:39So it comes out
34:40to overtake her
34:41knowing she's turning.
34:43It wasn't a poor manuva.
34:44He's just running too close.
34:46With a view probably
34:47to get an overtake in
34:48because his son's already
34:49gone down the road.
34:50Then they have the coming together
34:51which is probably where
34:52the road paint is there.
34:54And then he's come off
34:55and she's then got him
34:56trapped under the front of her car.
34:58Yeah, she's collected him
34:59and that's it.
34:59She's entitled to stop.
35:01Emergency stop.
35:01With no indication
35:02she can stop
35:03for a rabbit cross at the road.
35:04With the scene dealt with
35:07and evidence gathered
35:09Paul heads back out on patrol.
35:24Agency.
35:28We've just had three young girls
35:30come in.
35:30They just ran out
35:31with a handful of clothing.
35:32North Yorkshire police
35:34receive hundreds
35:35of emergency calls
35:36every day.
35:38We've had him in
35:38three days on the shop now.
35:40And the biker cops
35:41are usually the fastest
35:42to respond.
35:44How many were there?
35:45There was one in the car
35:47and two.
35:48They're running up the road now.
35:50Three young girls.
35:51They've got in the land rover now
35:52and they're heading up the road.
35:54With the report
35:55of an alleged theft in progress.
35:57Right, okay.
35:58I've managed to get
35:59the registration.
36:00Biker cop Paul is dispatched.
36:08I took it in vehicle involved.
36:12Yeah, last reliable sighting
36:14was downbound.
36:18Okay, is that?
36:20They've just left the store.
36:23I'm not sure which way it's gone.
36:25But I will start
36:29area search
36:30from where I am
36:31back into the wall.
36:34The report's come in.
36:36They believe
36:36that it's three females
36:38who have been taking
36:39kids to the wall
36:40then I've run out
36:41from the door with it
36:42and got into this vehicle.
36:44With Paul racing
36:45to intercept the suspects.
36:47He sees Jack Doddsworth
36:52joins the search.
36:58There's a sight
36:59over the railway line.
37:02Paul,
37:03there's a picture
37:03in there with contact.
37:06Here is your thank you.
37:09I didn't expect
37:10to go back to sight.
37:12Booker's in far,
37:13too far off it.
37:14As Paul speeds ahead
37:16on his BMW RT-1250.
37:20Yeah, you're having great work.
37:22Jack and the car
37:23are caught in traffic.
37:25Can't stop there.
37:30I can see you caravans.
37:33With Jack held up,
37:35Paul is alone
37:35without backup.
37:39You don't know
37:40what you're going
37:40to come up against.
37:41Some people
37:44are anti-police.
37:46I've arrived
37:47initially by myself.
37:48I'm likely
37:49to be outnumbered.
37:52Coming up...
37:52Your vehicle,
37:53I believe,
37:53has just been
37:54involved in some crime.
37:56A suspect driver
37:57faces some tough questions.
37:59Half an hour ago,
38:00that vehicle
38:01was being driven
38:01by a lady.
38:02Is that going to be you?
38:03No.
38:04As her past
38:05catches up with her...
38:06It's got some
38:07very expensive
38:07and shoplifting
38:08right across the country.
38:09And Paul needs
38:11backup fast.
38:13The initial log,
38:14does it say
38:15young horses
38:16run to the car?
38:17Yeah,
38:17one way with a brake
38:18keeps us off.
38:27Agency.
38:28We just had
38:29three young girls
38:31who just ran out
38:32of a handful of clothing.
38:34With reports
38:35of an alleged
38:36shoplifting spree
38:37near Harrogate...
38:38How many were there?
38:39There was
38:40one in the car
38:41and two...
38:42They're running
38:42up the road now.
38:43Three young girls.
38:45They've got in the
38:45Land Rover now
38:46and they're heading
38:47up the road.
38:48Biker cop Paul Buckley
38:49is racing to intercept
38:50the suspects
38:51in a black Land Rover.
38:55I will start
38:56area search
38:57from where I am
38:57back towards.
39:02I can see
39:03the caravans.
39:04The motorcycle
39:07can give us
39:08an extra edge
39:09if you go
39:10through bollards
39:11or over railway tracks
39:13or you're down
39:14narrow lanes.
39:16We have an advantage
39:17that we can go
39:18basically
39:18where the car
39:19would stop.
39:24I'm with the
39:25vehicle now.
39:26I'm PC
39:32Buckley.
39:34Is this vehicle
39:35yours?
39:35Yeah.
39:36Your vehicle
39:37I believe
39:37has just been
39:37involved in some
39:38crime.
39:39It's been caught
39:40on CCTV.
39:41Well I don't know
39:41why you've ever
39:42left here all day.
39:43No, no,
39:44listen to me.
39:44Listen to me.
39:46Just listen to me.
39:48Just listen to me.
39:50I found an entrance.
39:51After getting
39:52stuck in traffic
39:53PC Jack Doddsworth
39:55arrives to assist.
39:59Yeah,
39:59Buckley is getting
40:00some details of
40:01the female
40:01matchup description.
40:02Yeah,
40:02I'm cautioning you
40:03because I need to
40:03ask you something
40:04about your vehicle
40:04so you don't have
40:05to say anything
40:05but anything you do
40:06say may be getting
40:07out of this.
40:07It's on the caution.
40:09Is it in your name
40:10that vehicle?
40:11The logbook
40:12is not on my name
40:12because I buy
40:13and sell cars.
40:13Okay,
40:14so whose name
40:14is it in there?
40:15I've signed
40:15the logbook
40:16off.
40:17You seem to be
40:17answering a bit
40:18like a politician
40:18with...
40:19No,
40:19I'm not a politician.
40:20I'm not going to be
40:20worried about it.
40:21Right,
40:21I asked you
40:22whose vehicle it is.
40:22You said it's yours.
40:23It is mine.
40:24So why isn't it
40:25in your name?
40:25Because I sounded
40:26last night.
40:26Yeah,
40:27but that won't
40:28change the logbook.
40:29Not overnight,
40:30will it?
40:30Yeah,
40:30well,
40:31and he's dropped
40:32it back to me
40:32for 20 minutes ago.
40:33Right.
40:33He said he doesn't
40:34want it.
40:34Half an hour ago,
40:35that vehicle
40:36was being driven
40:37by a lady.
40:38Is that going to be
40:39you?
40:39No,
40:40I never left
40:40here all day.
40:41Okay,
40:41so where's the
40:42keys for your car?
40:43What do you want
40:43the keys for?
40:44Because the vehicle's
40:45got no tax on it.
40:45Yeah?
40:46Yeah,
40:46so I'll be
40:47taking the car.
40:48I'll be taking it
40:50at least for no tax.
40:54The tale is
40:55along the lines
40:55of she sold it
40:56to someone
40:57the previous night
40:58and that it had
40:59been returned
41:0020 minutes
41:01prior to me
41:02stopping it.
41:03It's been returned
41:03by this fella
41:04due to some
41:05mechanical irregularity.
41:07We've been given
41:08a bit of a
41:08roadside account
41:09which is a bit
41:10of a tall story,
41:12frankly.
41:12Yeah.
41:13The car's
41:15untaxed
41:15and the woman's
41:16uninsured.
41:18Can you jack up
41:19recovery?
41:20It'll be coming
41:20on suspicion
41:21of no insurance.
41:23Yes,
41:23yes.
41:24Paul searches
41:25for evidence
41:25of the stolen
41:26clothing.
41:29So,
41:30let's look
41:30at this boot
41:31of this car.
41:36There's nothing
41:37in the car
41:37but Paul
41:38spots something
41:39else.
41:40There is
41:41someone in
41:42the near
41:42vicinity
41:43that
41:43might match
41:45the description.
41:46The initial
41:47log,
41:48does it say
41:48young lasses
41:49were on
41:50the car?
41:52Oh, yeah.
41:52It just says
41:52three young girls,
41:54one wearing
41:54a bright pink
41:55top
41:55and they got
41:57into the car
41:58so I'm
41:58presuming the
41:59driver was
41:59sat waiting
42:00for them
42:00and thought.
42:04Yeah,
42:04I received
42:05the purported
42:06driver person
42:07I spoke to.
42:07She is wearing
42:08a pink top
42:08but I don't
42:09think you'd
42:09remotely
42:09mistake her
42:10for a young
42:11lass.
42:13It's got
42:13various offenses
42:14and shoplifting
42:15going back
42:15over the years
42:16and right
42:17across the
42:18country really.
42:19Yeah, I received.
42:21The reality is
42:22I don't know
42:22who the driver was
42:23depending on
42:24if there is
42:24any CCTV
42:25but I don't
42:27purport
42:27for going through
42:28eight mobile
42:29homes.
42:30although the car
42:35is seized
42:36without evidence
42:37to prove
42:38the identities
42:38of the three
42:39females
42:40the suspects
42:41are free to go
42:42while the police
42:43carry out CCTV
42:44enquiries
42:45at the store.
42:45one of the best
43:01things about being
43:02a motorcycle
43:03officer is
43:04that thought
43:05that what we
43:06do do
43:06can make a
43:08difference
43:08and maybe
43:08save a life.
43:09It's easy
43:12to underestimate
43:13how important
43:14that bike
43:14is for policing
43:16and that's
43:17both as
43:18regards to
43:18collision
43:18and dealing
43:19with criminality.
43:23They offer
43:24massive
43:24advantages
43:25and they're
43:26essential in
43:27North Yorkshire.
43:27the failed
43:34to stop
43:34silver
43:35Astrovan
43:35driver
43:36arrested
43:36in a field
43:37was charged
43:38with failing
43:38to stop
43:39for police
43:39driving
43:40without
43:41due care
43:41and attention
43:42no insurance
43:43and no
43:44MOT.
43:45He could
43:46be facing
43:46a prison
43:47sentence
43:47and another
43:48driving ban.
43:51Investigators
43:52believe
43:52the rider
43:53was on
43:53the wrong
43:54side
43:54of the road
43:55at the
43:55crest
