Ruben Selles in his final interview as Sheffield United manager, speaking to BBC Radio Sheffield after a 5-0 defeat at Ipswich Town
Transcript
00:00Do you think that you will get time in these circumstances if results don't improve?
00:05Well, I think it's not for me to speculate on that.
00:08For me, it's just to take the responsibility for what it is
00:10and then continue working hard until my time will end here, whatever it is that time.
00:16Upon your appointment, did the board say this was a long-term project,
00:19so with that, potentially some room for teething problems,
00:23or do you perhaps accept that it's still that zero-sum results-based industry?
00:28I know the business, I know how it works, and long-term can mean a lot of things,
00:35so I think it is what it is, and for me to answer that question,
00:39I'm here, I've never abandoned the players or the player that I am,
00:42and I work hard until my very last second here.
00:46Do you sort some kind of discussion with the board now to just say,
00:50look, what are your thoughts going forward?
00:54Again, I don't know anything about it,
00:56so as much as I can tell you that I give you the explanations today for this game,
01:01and then whatever is after the game or tomorrow,
01:03I don't have anything planned more than continue training the team.
01:08You made big calls today,
01:11Harmer and Campbell out of the team,
01:13the Player of the Year in the Championship last year
01:14and last season's leading scorer.
01:16What were you thinking behind that?
01:17Well, the way that I was thinking is exactly the team that you saw in the first half,
01:23a team that can defend, that can be aggressive,
01:24and then in the second part of the game we can make the changes
01:26to introduce that more quality or more final third threat.
01:31Unfortunately, we didn't make it happen at the end,
01:34but I think, as I say, the team in the first half
01:36was most likely the team that we want to see.
01:38Given the way this season has started,
01:42do you think that, well,
01:45I'm slightly going over all ground here,
01:46but the expectations at this football club are exceptionally high, aren't they?
01:50That after a winless start to the season as it is,
01:52the idea of getting into the playoffs and above,
01:56it's fanciful at the minute.
01:58Well, I think right now everything is speculation
01:59and everything will be magnified.
02:02I think we need to be focused on what is in front of us.
02:04As I say from the very beginning,
02:05to be Sheffield United manager to play for Sheffield United is a big responsibility
02:08and everyone will aim for the very best
02:11and getting the top of things.
02:13Right now we need to think about only what's next,
02:15what's the next training, what's the next action,
02:17how do we can go, get better,
02:21get our performances better,
02:23get more robust for 90 minutes and try to win the game.
02:25That's it right now.
