00:00Pelagia's View
00:07Fragments of the true teachings of Jesus remained alive in some people's hearts
00:15until a few centuries after his death.
00:20Yes, a small part of the Son of God's doctrine
00:24had not yet been distorted or misinterpreted by people at that time
00:30and some of them faithfully strived to fulfill the word that he had left.
00:38Proofs of this are the ideas defended by the theologian Pelagius
00:44who lived in the 4th century of our era.
00:48Among other things, he taught that salvation was in the very hands of the human being.
00:58Pelagius claimed that salvation was achieved by the individual
01:02through his right choice and self-effort.
01:07That was due to the exercise of free will
01:10a gift bestowed by God upon human beings
01:14and an integral part of their nature.
01:18Pelagius said that the ability to act at one's own discretion
01:22when properly exercised produces virtue
01:27the supreme good duly followed by reward
01:31since each one has the prerogative to choose between good and evil
01:36and from there to bear the consequences.
01:40In addition to free will, the Lord has endowed the human being
01:46with dormant virtues waiting to be awakened by the individual
01:51such as being interested in others.
01:55According to Pelagius, compassion was
01:58to feel someone else's pain as if it were ours.
02:03On sin, he asserted that the predisposition or inclination to evil was
02:11in itself a result of sin
02:14and that the habit of sinning
02:16eventually weakens the human being's volition
02:19and obscures his thinking.
02:23He also supported that sin being within
02:27could not be transmitted from one person to another
02:31which, in his view, would be immoral.
02:36If evil, corruption, could be inherited
02:40then God's goodness and justice would be destroyed.
02:45Original sin did not taint human nature,
02:50he asserted, indicating that man cannot hold
02:54the original sin or the fall of man
02:58responsible for his weaknesses.
03:01And he insisted,
03:03Pelagius preached that the Creator
03:22had not ordained anything impossible for human beings
03:26and that the frailty of the flesh
03:28was merely a pretext for not doing good.
03:33From Pelagius are also these words,
03:36No one knows better the measure of our strength
03:41than he who gave us our strength,
03:44and no one has a better understanding
03:46of what is within our power
03:49than he who endowed us
03:51with the very resources of our power.
03:55He has not willed to command anything impossible,
03:59for he is righteous.
04:03Close quote.
04:05Twelve centuries before Pelagius spoke those words,
04:09the prophet Micah had already taught his people
04:12the same concept.
04:14Open quote.
04:15He has shown you, O man, what is good,
04:20and what does the Lord require of you
04:22but to do justly,
04:24to love mercy,
04:26and to walk humbly with your God.
04:30Close quote.
04:31Micah chapter 6 verse 8
04:34And the author of Ecclesiasticus,
04:38Book of Syrac,
04:40also reiterated a few centuries later,
04:43He has not commanded anyone to be wicked,
04:48and he has not given anyone permission to sin.
04:52Close quote.
04:54Syrac chapter 15 verses 20 and 21
04:58Unfortunately, as with almost all good things,
05:03the doctrine of Pelagius,
05:06reminiscent of genuine teachings of Christ,
05:09was considered heretical by the clergy of that time
05:13and summarily rejected.
05:15In furious opposition to Pelagius,
05:18who taught that people are perfectly capable of not sinning,
05:24the theologian Augustine established
05:27a diametrically opposed principle.
05:30Non posse non pecare.
05:33It is not possible not to sin.
05:38From then on,
05:39Augustine's principle has always been enthusiastically welcomed
05:43by those who do not want
05:45or can no longer move their spirit in an upward direction,
05:50towards its development,
05:52as advocated by the Omnipotent Creator.
05:57They are the servants who buried their talents
06:00instead of making them pay interest on interest,
06:04as was their obligation.
