00:00:00If you have just joined us and wanting an update on the Corvette factory situation,
00:00:10there is just one car, Ollie Gavin, stopped out on course,
00:00:14and then Marco Werder got into the side of Jan Magnussen big time
00:00:18and sent Jan scampering across the gravel trap.
00:00:23But thankfully, the 63 car is still in the race.
00:00:26The 64 has been retired.
00:00:29We are back.
00:00:30Welcome back to Le Mans, folks.
00:00:32Speeds live and continuing coverage,
00:00:35and it is car number two for Audi Sport North America.
00:00:38Tom Christensen, who has a two-lap lead over the sister car of Marco Werder,
00:00:43and there is the Corvette camp.
00:00:46What a day.
00:00:47Mixed fortunes.
00:00:48Bittersweet, really, but they are still very much in the race.
00:00:52And you know who else is still in the race?
00:00:53It's Ron Fellows in that 63 Corvette,
00:00:56and Dorsey, well, they're old friends,
00:00:59and they took some time to sit down and have a chat earlier this week.
00:01:02In endurance racing, you've won everything that you could possibly win.
00:01:10You're back again to try to win.
00:01:12Is this your last time at Le Mans?
00:01:14Well, you know, you never say never.
00:01:17Le Mans is a very special place,
00:01:18and it's really hard to win, so I give it up.
00:01:22Tell me this.
00:01:23What's your best memory of this place?
00:01:24Been here so many times now.
00:01:26To come here and get our first win in 2001,
00:01:29you know, that was something that Herb Fischel had worked at for a lot of years.
00:01:34And when he first told me about it in 97,
00:01:36it was, hey, I want to go take a Corvette to Le Mans and win.
00:01:40Cool.
00:01:41Come in.
00:01:41Was your win here, you think,
00:01:46the crowning glory in your achievements as a race car driver?
00:01:49I want to move, my Ron Fellows!
00:01:51This one and Daytona.
00:01:54You know, Daytona is another special place,
00:01:56and that year in particular with Dale Earnhardt Sr. with us,
00:02:01that time period for me with Dale Sr. led to opportunities with DEI,
00:02:06which I still maintain to this day.
00:02:09Well, since you never say never, what are you doing next?
00:02:12High on our list of priorities is to get a Nextel Cup win on a road course.
00:02:17We've won in Bush and Trucks and have come close in Cup,
00:02:20but we don't have one yet.
00:02:21So that is high on the list of things to get done.
00:02:25Maybe it's this year.
00:02:27Well, make me a promise, if you do decide to retire,
00:02:29don't come into broadcasting right away, please.
00:02:33No, I think I did it once with Greg Kramer.
00:02:36I did a speed touring race.
00:02:38And although fun, I found myself too busy watching.
00:02:45I want to stay active with Corvette.
00:02:47These guys are like family here at GM Racing and the Pratt-Millers,
00:02:50so we're going to stick around.
00:02:52We'll stay on this side of the fence, I think.
00:02:55I wish you good luck in this race.
00:02:58It looks to be the toughest one you're going to have, I think, in competition level.
00:03:01It wouldn't be anywhere near as satisfying if it wasn't.
00:03:04And this is certainly by far the most competitive GT1 field we've seen,
00:03:08and I know we're feeling like we're ready.
00:03:13He's a nice guy, isn't he?
00:03:14He's a true gentleman and one of the sports greats.
00:03:16How did you find sitting down and talking about the future with him?
00:03:19Yeah, very, very special time, and we wish him well.
00:03:32The Converse Men X car is on pit road, but let's put a cap on the Corvette situation.
00:03:37Here's Chris Neville.
00:03:39Lee, you know, whenever we think about Corvette, you always think about Ron Fellows,
00:03:42but whenever we have any questions about Corvette, we always go to Ron's car chief, Dan Binks.
00:03:46Dan, you've been with Ron for five years now.
00:03:48A lot of guys on this car have been here for a long time.
00:03:52As these changes are happening within the team and all the speculation on will Ron be back,
00:03:57what is the team thinking?
00:03:59Well, we just like racing with Ron, and, you know, he comes by the shop and has a good time with us.
00:04:03And, you know, my history with Ron is kind of tough.
00:04:06So, you know, I was Tommy Kendall's crew chief for his whole career, and we raced against Ron.
00:04:11So it's kind of neat to see both sides, and it's been a lot of fun.
00:04:13You know, as you look back over the years of this car and the changes that it is seeing as Ron has really developed it,
00:04:21when you look back to that first-generation Corvette, is it just so completely different than what we have on the track today?
00:04:27Well, it's just like anything you make.
00:04:29Every time you do it, it's better, whether it's a bicycle, skateboard, or a race car.
00:04:33So that's what all these guys do.
00:04:35They engineer a better mousetrap every time.
00:04:37Well, Dorsey, I know you were worried about Ron Fellows possibly getting out of the driver's seat and maybe up in the TV booth.
00:04:43But this guy, he's another guy that has the potential of taking away some of our jobs.
00:04:51Well, I'll tell you one thing about Ron Fellows, what I was trying to say before.
00:04:54If Ron Fellows wants to go out and get a Nextel Cup win on a road course, Ron Fellows will get the Nextel Cup win
00:05:01because he's that determined guy, he's that talented of a driver, and I'll pull for him 100%.
00:05:06Let's update you on some other things occurring here at Le Mans at the moment in GT2.
00:05:12It is that virtually unstoppable Risi Ferrari, the 430 of Mick Asalo, Jamie Mello, and Johnny Mollum.
00:05:20They are already up to 17th overall, and they are, of course, leading in class.
00:05:25They are being chased down by the Porsche of the IMSA Performance Matmut team,
00:05:32and American Patrick Long is in that car.
00:05:34But, however, behind the wheel right now is Richard Leet,
00:05:37and they are teamed with the owner, the principal, Raymond Narak, who is on the ever-improved.
00:05:43And they're some six positions further back overall, but they're second in class.
00:05:49And then the Scuderia Acosta Ferrari 430.
00:05:51So two Ferraris in the top three, and I'm sure we've already mentioned throughout this broadcast,
00:05:56only four Porsches at Le Mans this year in GT2.
00:06:01It's almost unheard of.
00:06:03It is a great spread of manufacturers right across the board.
00:06:06You're seeing a variety of work going on in the various pit boxes.
00:06:11This, to me, looks like the Team Modena car, is it?
00:06:15It's a little difficult to see.
00:06:18We'll update you when we come back.
00:06:21Hey, if it's time to dress up your mobile phone, go to speedtv.com.
00:06:35Custom wallpaper ringtones satisfy your need for speed with high-octane ringtones
00:06:40and fuel-injected wallpapers.
00:06:41It's great stuff for your speed mobile.
00:06:44Speedtv.com, and you can get more details right there, right then.
00:06:48Let's talk about a little team that not could, but can.
00:06:53They've shown us many times before, and this year at Le Mans, they've got a new,
00:06:56they've got a different car, and they sit in the top seven outright.
00:07:00Justin Bell has more.
00:07:01You're not comparing Martin Short to Thomas the Tank Engine, are you?
00:07:06My goodness, they're saying you're the little engine that could.
00:07:08He obviously just got out of the car, and Jao Bobosa's got in.
00:07:11It was a lovely run you just had.
00:07:13Is it nice out there at this time of night?
00:07:15Yeah, it is very nice.
00:07:16It's quite serene at times, except when you're being crowded by a bunch of Audis scaring the pants off you.
00:07:22And where do they tend to catch you up?
00:07:23Oh, just about everywhere, and they overtake everywhere.
00:07:27I'll take my hat off to them.
00:07:28Those boys are consummate drivers, they really are.
00:07:32It's interesting, because the Audis, they are far better at overtaking than the Peugeots.
00:07:37The Peugeots, you know, can't seem to quite make their mind up.
00:07:40They're not very decisive.
00:07:41You leave the door open for them, and they sort of dilly-dally,
00:07:44whereas the Audis, you don't even need to leave a door open.
00:07:46They're there.
00:07:47Oh, bloody hell.
00:07:48They slide under the crack at the bottom.
00:07:49Now, one thing I think we should give credit to, obviously, you know,
00:07:52the big teams have massive sponsors come by very easily.
00:07:55You've got Deutsche Bank there with their X-Markets.
00:07:57I mean, that takes a lot of work to build up to Le Mans, doesn't it?
00:08:00It does, yeah.
00:08:02It's, well, four years we've been at it now.
00:08:05And it's purely because of Deutsche Bank that we are here,
00:08:08and I'm very grateful we are too.
00:08:10Thanks for the mention.
00:08:11Well, one other mention we've got to make is Jaubo Bosa.
00:08:13I've raced with him, and it can be mildly depressing at times,
00:08:16because I think he's one of the fastest drivers out there anywhere,
00:08:20and he's well-deserving of these top rides.
00:08:22How are you finding him as a teammate?
00:08:24Well, I first discovered him in a Moxler at 12,000 kilometers in 2003
00:08:30when he jumped in the car and was immediately three seconds lap quicker
00:08:33than everybody else on the track.
00:08:35And I thought, blimey, this guy's good,
00:08:36and I've thought that ever since.
00:08:38He's a perfect teammate.
00:08:39And I believe last weekend he was driving in America
00:08:42in the Brumos Porsche and set the fastest lap in that car,
00:08:46and he's a guy that's really deserving a top ride, to be honest.
00:08:49And I'll be very sorry if he leaves us,
00:08:51because he's a fantastic driver.
00:08:53Well, not only is he a great driver, he's a great guy,
00:08:56and you'll be responsible for his career taking off,
00:08:59as well as such good English he speaks.
00:09:01Thank you, Martin.
00:09:01Thanks a lot.
00:09:03Yeah, and congratulations to Martin Short, too,
00:09:05because so far the year's going pretty well in that new Pescarolo.
00:09:09He's a privateer team,
00:09:10and he is tied for points in the Le Mans series
00:09:13after two rounds at Monza and at Valencia
00:09:16with the works Pescarolo team.
00:09:18So they run a very good outfit.
00:09:20But it hasn't all been champagne and roses
00:09:23for Martin Short here at Le Mans.
00:09:25Let's rewind to 2004.
00:09:26You'll see what I mean.
00:09:31The Royal Centre racing car
00:09:33has got nailed by Sebastian Bordet,
00:09:35and Martin Short was clobbered there
00:09:37by the Pescarolo Jagd.
00:09:39It was closing every door,
00:09:40which is not supposed really to happen in endurance,
00:09:43so I was pretty surprised and upset in the car,
00:09:45and at some point I sneak in on the inside
00:09:48and it just closed again,
00:09:49so, you know, we had contact.
00:09:51It's just stupid.
00:09:52Now, what's the left rear?
00:09:54That was what was hit by Bordet.
00:09:56Martin Short slams the wall.
00:09:58That is a huge contact in the Porsche curves.
00:10:01He just drove straight into me.
00:10:03If that's getting in the way,
00:10:06well, I know he's an accomplished racer,
00:10:08but he should have been a bit more clever than he was,
00:10:11and it could have had very serious implications on me.
00:10:18Funny how things work out.
00:10:20He was nailed by a Pescarolo.
00:10:21Now he owns and drives a Pescarolo.
00:10:23He told me just quickly the other day, too,
00:10:26that he sought Bordet's cell phone number
00:10:30and rang him later that day, Dorsey,
00:10:32to take him to task.
00:10:34That's a man determined.
00:10:35He looked him up,
00:10:36and he gave him a piece of his mind, didn't he?
00:10:38All right, speaking of determined men, determined drivers,
00:10:40here's the 18-year-old American, Colin Brown.
00:10:44Yeah, Lee, while most 18-year-olds are enjoying their summer,
00:10:47getting ready to go off to college,
00:10:48Colin Brown enjoying his last summer of sports car racing
00:10:51before you headed off to the world of NASCAR.
00:10:5412 hours through your first Le Mans.
00:10:55What are you thinking?
00:10:56It's fantastic so far.
00:10:57I'm really enjoying this race.
00:10:59Tracy and Nick are doing a great job in the car,
00:11:01and so far the Cronen Racing Reset Compton Shoney car
00:11:04is just running real smooth so far,
00:11:06so hopefully we can keep it that way.
00:11:07You're running fifth right now.
00:11:09You guys going to be able to make a push to the front,
00:11:10catch up with the 97?
00:11:12Well, the 97's pretty quick right now.
00:11:14We're just going to stay out there
00:11:16and just keep making laps and see how it goes at the end.
00:11:18We know there's a lot of attrition at this race,
00:11:20so we're banking on that.
00:11:22You've been bouncing all over the planet last weekend,
00:11:24Watkins Glen.
00:11:25Now you're at Le Mans next weekend, Mid-Ohio.
00:11:28You starting to feel like a NASCAR driver?
00:11:30Well, next weekend I got Mid-Ohio,
00:11:31then a couple days after that I'm testing a stock car for Roush
00:11:34in, where is it, North Carolina.
00:11:36Then two days after that we're testing in Barber,
00:11:38and two days after that I'm back in Iowa testing a stock car,
00:11:41and the next day I'm in Daytona driving the DP car,
00:11:43so I'll be busy.
00:11:44Well, like most 18-year-olds,
00:11:46they like staying up until 3 in the morning,
00:11:48but Colin actually got out of the car and said,
00:11:49man, I need to take a little rest.
00:11:52He just loves to drive doors.
00:11:54That sounded like identical to what my schedule is almost,
00:11:57except for the stock car bits.
00:11:59He loves to drive, of course.
00:12:00He's 18 years old.
00:12:01What woman do you want out of life?
00:12:02He's got it all right now.
00:12:04This is the race-leading car that's on pit road.
00:12:06Tom Christensen is in in the two
00:12:08and stays in the car.
00:12:10This has been a solid stint from Tom.
00:12:13I'll tell you what, that's a tough old burn right there.
00:12:16He hit that huge accident not long back.
00:12:18They were wondering if he'd ever even be fit to drive here,
00:12:21much less start doing double stints and all this business.
00:12:24Double stitting in the night as well.
00:12:26This is a remarkable performance from Tom Christensen.
00:12:30You should also say his last lap happened to 3.27.6,
00:12:33which is just outrageously fast.
00:12:35Two seconds under what was the track record.
00:12:37That was actually the best lap.
00:12:39That was set by Alan McNish a little earlier.
00:12:40His last one was a 3.37.
00:12:42That was his in-lap.
00:12:43As we go to the out-of-race cars,
00:12:47and sadly the sister car, the Yost Audi,
00:12:50Mike Rockenfella crashed heavily,
00:12:52and that's why the three Audi is on that list.
00:12:54The Timbrook Laddie Radical, it went out early.
00:12:58In fact, the opening laps of the race,
00:13:00there was contact between it and another car,
00:13:02and it limped around for a little longer after that.
00:13:05The Lamborghini, well, it was gone right from the start, Dorsey, wasn't it?
00:13:08Yeah, it was totaled earlier on,
00:13:09and they weren't going to let it run,
00:13:10but they, at the last minute, let them rebuild the car,
00:13:13and it didn't last very long.
00:13:16Some more to go.
00:13:17The Audi R8-powered No. 5 Swiss Spirit Lola,
00:13:21it's now out of the race.
00:13:22Sadly, the creation, Judd, is gone.
00:13:24Two sensational paint job on that car.
00:13:27One of the two Panos Esperantes is gone.
00:13:30One of the two Spikers is gone.
00:13:31And most recently, the super-colourful Flying Lizard Porsche.
00:13:38So, tough luck for those guys,
00:13:42for the boys from Sonoma in California.
00:13:44So, as Tom Christensen marks two stints out of the way
00:13:48and begins his third,
00:13:50it is a remarkable performance.
00:13:52He's hanging in there.
00:13:53This guy's not.
00:13:54Yeah, he only did one and a half stints,
00:13:56and that was it.
00:13:56That was enough for him.
00:13:57He's taking a nap now.
00:13:58Well, you've got to grab it when you can.
00:14:00You do have to grab it when you can around this place.
00:14:02A few moments of sleep to try and help you get through.
00:14:06But it's amazing, once the sun pops its head up
00:14:10over the grandstand,
00:14:12how people lift and run hard to the end.
00:14:14Wednesday on Unique Whips.
00:14:21Pam Anderson is known for getting things fired up,
00:14:23but now it's Will's crew's turn
00:14:25to get Pam's engine started with an all-star ride.
00:14:29This is going to be huge.
00:14:31Unique Whips, Wednesday at 10 Eastern.
00:14:34Of course, only right here on Speed.
00:14:37Hi, everyone.
00:14:37Welcome back.
00:14:38We're here at Le Mans.
00:14:39It's the 75th running of the Michelin 24 hours of Le Mans.
00:14:43It's Lee Diffie, Dorsey Schrader up here in the booth.
00:14:45We've got Chris Neville and Justin Bell down on pit lane.
00:14:49As we work the nighttime hours,
00:14:51various teams have had various problems.
00:14:53That goes hand-in-hand with Le Mans.
00:14:56And look, there is the team that's grabbed the most attention.
00:14:58Here's Johnny Mollum standing by at Risi Competizione
00:15:02ready to take over from Micasalo.
00:15:05This is the GT2 class-leading car.
00:15:08Is it bulletproof here today, Dorsey?
00:15:10It's been pretty close to bulletproof,
00:15:12but I wouldn't say that.
00:15:13I mean, there's a long way to go in the event still.
00:15:16Anything might and could happen.
00:15:18This team is prepared for anything that could happen, though, also.
00:15:21We've crossed over the halfway mark.
00:15:22This is the car that's second in class.
00:15:25American Porsche factory driver Patrick Long is part of this team.
00:15:29This is a young and upcoming driver behind the wheel right now,
00:15:33Richard Leitz, who has shown a great deal of speed.
00:15:36He drives in the Le Mans Endurance Series, or the Le Mans Series, I should say,
00:15:40with Raymond Narak, the team principal.
00:15:42And Patrick Long has been very impressed from him.
00:15:45Those guys are some ways back from the Risi Ferrari,
00:15:50but they are still second in class, 23rd overall.
00:15:53That's the IMSA Performance Matt Mood car.
00:15:56You may remember this one.
00:15:57This is the car that Romain Dumas drove in for the past couple of years with Narak.
00:16:02They have very close Porsche ties here in France, so we will keep an eye on that.
00:16:07They were fastest at the pre-test day, and they've been fast all weekend long.
00:16:11So they will be a contender for sure.
00:16:14The 76 Porsche, it's a French team.
00:16:17It was at the center of controversy, actually, last year,
00:16:20because Dumas crashed that car heavily.
00:16:22And when you crash your car, you're not allowed to replace the chassis of the tub.
00:16:26However, it's a French team, and they were allowed to.
00:16:30Um, say no more.
00:16:32A lot of questions were raised.
00:16:37All right.
00:16:38Let's take a look at the highlights of the race thus far.
00:16:41If you've missed it, if you've just tuned in, welcome.
00:16:44This is what has gone down the opening hour.
00:16:46Nice, clean start, but threatening clouds above it.
00:16:49In fact, it was a breezy track.
00:16:52Sebastian Bordet, the pole-sitting car.
00:16:55Look what happened in the first series of corners.
00:16:58Bordet ran wide.
00:17:00Flobber to Bollard, and Dindo Capello said,
00:17:03thank you very much, I'm going to slide on through.
00:17:06The Audis were quick for the opening several laps,
00:17:10but then they fell to Audi's power.
00:17:12Michael Verges almost nailed Adrian Fernandez,
00:17:15his Barrazi Epsilon team-mate.
00:17:17And as a result, there were drummers with the car,
00:17:20and he spent several laps back in the pit box.
00:17:23This is Tracy Crone in the Crone Racing with Risi Competizione.
00:17:27Ferrari ran off track early.
00:17:29And then for the sister car,
00:17:31drummers with the door while Jamie Mello was at the wheel.
00:17:35Quite bizarre, really.
00:17:37Hasn't affected them.
00:17:38They are the class-leading car still.
00:17:41To the second hour, Tom Christensen did a Sebastian Bordet, didn't he?
00:17:45That was a close call.
00:17:46Greasy circuit.
00:17:47Just caught Tom a little unawares.
00:17:49And then his team-mate, Mike Rockenfella,
00:17:53absolutely slammed the wall.
00:17:55Ollie Gavin behind the wheel of the 64.
00:17:57It was a drive-shaft problem.
00:17:59He was able to get the car fired up again,
00:18:00but he'd already had outside assistance from the officials.
00:18:03That official said, no, no.
00:18:04Come back.
00:18:05You're done.
00:18:05Your day is over.
00:18:06Check the rain out here.
00:18:09It had everybody scrambling.
00:18:11The Labra boys, first of all, in the Aston pit.
00:18:15And then here, the 33 Zaytek.
00:18:17That's Adrian Fernandez's car, sponsored by Lowe's.
00:18:20To the fourth hour, look at this Luke Alfong.
00:18:22Corvette just nails the Converse Men X Aston up in turn one.
00:18:28And then Stefan Mooker was narrowed,
00:18:31was very lucky to avoid injury here
00:18:34when there was an on-board fire.
00:18:36The back of his helmet was particularly inflamed.
00:18:40He jumped from the cockpit of that car and was OK.
00:18:43Then a wheel-bearing problem for one of the Peugeots.
00:18:46That caught everybody's attention.
00:18:48It was the 8.
00:18:48It spent time back in the box and lost several laps.
00:18:54To the seventh hour.
00:18:56Watch this for a close call.
00:18:58Marco Werner on the inside of Jan Magnussen.
00:19:01And it sends Jan flying.
00:19:04A lucky, lucky escape.
00:19:07And that's when you say thanks for the extra runoff.
00:19:11Both those cars still in the race and still very competitive.
00:19:14So, it has been eventful, Dorsey.
00:19:20And we're only halfway through and a lot more enough to come.
00:19:24It's been very eventful.
00:19:26You know, the guys were on a fantastic pace.
00:19:29The Audi guys were running at a much quicker pace
00:19:30than anybody thought they would.
00:19:32Everybody really thought that the Peugeot would be the one
00:19:34that was out there setting quick laps.
00:19:36Not that way.
00:19:37Well, right now, speaking of Audi pace,
00:19:40Marco Werner is doing very respectable lap times.
00:19:443 minute 30 last time around.
00:19:45He was three seconds, three and a half full seconds
00:19:47quicker than race leader Tom Christensen
00:19:50as the Peugeot boys are back on pit road.
00:19:54This is the 8.
00:19:55And Stefan Sarrazin climbs aboard.
00:20:02And Justin standing by.
00:20:07Well, you know, it gets down to these little friendsmen
00:20:09flying through a small hold on the side of these cars.
00:20:12It's definitely a two-man affair
00:20:13to get the driver into the cockpit.
00:20:15This one's going a little bit more smoothly
00:20:17than the Villeneuve one did.
00:20:18But this is a very slick operation,
00:20:20just like you're sitting down the other end of an Audi.
00:20:22These guys have rehearsed everything.
00:20:24There's nothing accidental about any of their movements.
00:20:27Of course, the only thing that is accidental
00:20:29is the throng of media and throng of people,
00:20:33you know, the marshals controlling the car.
00:20:35By getting a little glimpse inside the cockpit,
00:20:37we don't often get a chance to see that.
00:20:39It is quite amazing.
00:20:40It looks just like a Formula One steering wheel.
00:20:42Quite fabulous.
00:20:43You know what?
00:20:44The driver is unable to do his own belts up.
00:20:47There is not enough lateral movement
00:20:49for him to be able to put his elbows out
00:20:51and do the belts up.
00:20:52It looks like a standard stop.
00:20:54They're doing something on the side of the car.
00:20:56They took off the air vents
00:20:58on the left-hand side of the car
00:20:59just to gain access.
00:21:00It looked like a quick...
00:21:01He actually just tweaked a couple of wires
00:21:03and then closed it back up again.
00:21:05I'm not technical enough, Dorsey,
00:21:07to be able to tell you what that was.
00:21:08But it looks pretty good.
00:21:10So they're dropping the car on the ground
00:21:12and getting it back on.
00:21:14But actually, I think I can grab Pedro Lamy now.
00:21:16Hold on one second.
00:21:17Hey, Pedro, man, that was a good, great drive.
00:21:19Yeah, it was okay.
00:21:22I mean, the cars...
00:21:23We changed a bit the car,
00:21:25but it was not brilliant.
00:21:27We have a bit of a problem with the engine as well.
00:21:30So we will see.
00:21:31And obviously, what is the drama
00:21:34with the radiators in the side pod?
00:21:36They went in the side pod.
00:21:36Has it got an overheating problem?
00:21:38Yes, yes, it's true.
00:21:39It's overheating.
00:21:40That's a problem.
00:21:41Okay, well, you know what?
00:21:42You've got great teammates, great drive,
00:21:44and I know you'll be back in later.
00:21:45Thanks, man.
00:21:46So he's let the cat out of the bag.
00:21:48We do have a problem with the Peugeot.
00:21:50We know he's been pulling the side pods out
00:21:52and cleaning that debris out of there.
00:21:54But confirmation that the engine has been overheating.
00:21:57And for a diesel, Lee,
00:21:59this is a very critical situation.
00:22:01One that we will keep an eye on
00:22:04as we look at the Pescarolo Sport camp.
00:22:06Jean-Christophe Bouillon has done a good job.
00:22:09That car is in fourth overall as it pitted.
00:22:12Driver change being executed.
00:22:14So it's the two Audis, one and two,
00:22:17then Jacques Villeneuve in the best of the Peugeots.
00:22:19Bouillon steps from the car.
00:22:20That is the Pescarolo Sport.
00:22:23The Judd-powered Pescarolo.
00:22:27And away it goes
00:22:29to maintain its top four position.
00:22:31Stefan Sarrazin is fifth overall
00:22:33from Jan Cherouz in sixth
00:22:36and then João Barbosa in that customer.
00:22:39Pescarolo is seventh outright.
00:22:42Peter Cox is the best of the Astons in 0-0-7.
00:22:47In eighth overall, best of the GT1 class.
00:22:51Now here's what I'm thinking.
00:22:52It's 3.15 in the morning.
00:22:54It's as cool as it's going to be
00:22:56for the rest of this 24-hour race.
00:22:58And of course, if the Peugeots are right now
00:23:00having overheating problem,
00:23:01it might or might not be due
00:23:03to that rubber collected in the radiator.
00:23:05Certainly that's something they address
00:23:06each time they come in.
00:23:08But I don't know if that's all of it,
00:23:09if that's the overall total picture.
00:23:12As the sun comes up,
00:23:13which it will in about two hours,
00:23:15the temperature is going to rise.
00:23:17And I think we'll see probably problems
00:23:19occur within the Peugeot camp.
00:23:21See right here,
00:23:25one of the tire technicians
00:23:26taking a parameter check.
00:23:28They're checking the temperature of the tire.
00:23:30They'll stick that parameter in there
00:23:31all the way across from left to right
00:23:33and get a measurement.
00:23:34And it gives them an idea of tire wear
00:23:36and how much camber, if you will,
00:23:39the car has or the car has.
00:23:41These teams ready for a stop.
00:23:48Chris, what do you have?
00:23:51Lee, while we were away,
00:23:52the 97 did come in for a pit stop
00:23:54and Johnny Mullen,
00:23:55we saw him get behind the wheel.
00:23:57Now the team did spend
00:23:58about an extra minute in pit lane.
00:23:59They were working at the rear of the car.
00:24:01I checked in with them
00:24:01and they said that the clutch
00:24:02was getting a bit spongy
00:24:03on that Ferrari 430.
00:24:05So they were bleeding the clutch.
00:24:07Now the team says this isn't something
00:24:08they're too concerned about
00:24:09at this point in time.
00:24:10But remember, we still have about
00:24:12almost another 12 hours to go.
00:24:14So we might be seeing
00:24:16a little chink in the armor
00:24:17of that Ferrari.
00:24:18Wow, of course,
00:24:19bleeding the clutch
00:24:20lets you know that it's a hydronic clutch.
00:24:22What they're doing is the slave cylinder,
00:24:25if it was actually not slave cylinder anymore.
00:24:27But they're bleeding the air out of the line.
00:24:29But how did the air get there
00:24:30is my question.
00:24:35As far as LMP2,
00:24:37it is still American Bill Binney
00:24:40who leads the way.
00:24:41Young Chris Buncombe
00:24:42is behind the wheel.
00:24:4415th overall.
00:24:45And the competitors
00:24:46close by in that class
00:24:48are dropping further down the order.
00:24:51It's looking good for Bill Binney.
00:24:52He has a remarkable record
00:24:54here at Le Mans.
00:24:55We're back at Le Mans.
00:25:03Pit Lane is alive.
00:25:05This is the Barrazi Epsilon,
00:25:07the golf-sponsored car,
00:25:09the Zaytac.
00:25:10This is the sister car
00:25:11to the one that Adrian Fernandez
00:25:12is driving at the moment.
00:25:14And I mentioned
00:25:15as we went to the break,
00:25:16the Liz Halliday prototype
00:25:18had fallen down the order.
00:25:20And that has now elevated Adrian
00:25:22up into third place
00:25:23in the LMP2 class.
00:25:26Justin,
00:25:26I know that you're scanning Pit Lane.
00:25:28Have you found out
00:25:29what's going on
00:25:29with the Liz Halliday prototype?
00:25:32Yeah,
00:25:33they're up on the jacks.
00:25:34I mean,
00:25:34the big jacks in the garage.
00:25:36And they're actually
00:25:36rather belawnly
00:25:38looking at the back
00:25:39when there's three guys in it
00:25:40and they're changing
00:25:41the gearbox out.
00:25:42That's basically it
00:25:43as the gearbox has
00:25:43kind of ingested itself
00:25:45and now they're going
00:25:46to replace it.
00:25:47You know that's a lengthy stop
00:25:48which basically
00:25:49sets you back
00:25:50four, five, six laps.
00:25:51But the atmosphere
00:25:52has seemed pretty good
00:25:53in there
00:25:53because they know
00:25:54they can get back out
00:25:54a lot better
00:25:55than losing it out on track
00:25:57with a drive shaft
00:25:57or, you know,
00:25:58losing an engine.
00:25:59So they'll be back
00:26:00in the game
00:26:00before we know it.
00:26:03Good stuff.
00:26:04Thanks for that.
00:26:05Yeah, they do that.
00:26:05There's a long way to go.
00:26:06We've only just crossed
00:26:07the halfway mark
00:26:08some 20, 25 minutes ago
00:26:11and we're already
00:26:131,600 odd miles
00:26:16into this event
00:26:17as the ACO officials
00:26:19just checking out
00:26:20some photographers
00:26:21getting some final shots
00:26:22of the Barrazi Epsilon
00:26:24Zaytac.
00:26:24It gets released
00:26:25as this wonderful race
00:26:27continues
00:26:28and it's quite appropriate
00:26:29that we are here
00:26:31once again
00:26:32at Le Mans
00:26:32racing in France.
00:26:34You'll see what I mean
00:26:35after you watch this piece.
00:26:38In 1893
00:26:41when Illinois
00:26:41bicycle manufacturer
00:26:43Charles Durye
00:26:43built the first
00:26:44successful gasoline
00:26:45powered car
00:26:46in the United States
00:26:47Peugeot
00:26:48and another French
00:26:49manufacturer
00:26:50Panhard
00:26:50had already been
00:26:51making automobiles
00:26:52for four years.
00:26:54France led the world
00:26:55in the number of cars
00:26:56manufactured
00:26:57until 1906
00:26:59when overtaken
00:27:00by the US.
00:27:01France was also
00:27:03the birthplace
00:27:03of auto racing.
00:27:04In 1894
00:27:05the first ever race
00:27:07was run
00:27:07from Paris
00:27:08to Rouen.
00:27:10In 1906
00:27:11the newly formed
00:27:12Automobile
00:27:12Club de l'Ouest
00:27:13staged the first ever
00:27:15Grand Prix.
00:27:16It was held
00:27:16on a 64 mile circuit
00:27:18just east of Le Mans
00:27:19and the race
00:27:20took two days
00:27:22to complete.
00:27:24In July of 1914
00:27:26World War I
00:27:27broke out
00:27:28and for the next
00:27:29seven years
00:27:30there was little
00:27:31racing in Europe.
00:27:34In 1921
00:27:35the ACO
00:27:36revived the
00:27:37French Grand Prix
00:27:38using for its race course
00:27:40ten and three quarter
00:27:41miles of public roads
00:27:42in and around Le Mans.
00:27:44Much of that same circuit
00:27:45is being used
00:27:46in today's race
00:27:47some 86 years later.
00:27:49Despite climbing
00:27:50out of a hospital bed
00:27:51just two hours
00:27:52before the race
00:27:52California's
00:27:54Jimmy Murphy
00:27:54won it
00:27:55after rolling
00:27:56his Duesenberg
00:27:56during testing.
00:27:58He took the
00:27:58checkered flag
00:27:59with two flat tyres
00:28:00as well as
00:28:01a huge hole
00:28:02in his radiator
00:28:03due to many
00:28:04sharp stones
00:28:04encountered en route.
00:28:06The following year
00:28:07Murphy won
00:28:07the Indianapolis 500
00:28:09and the national
00:28:10championship
00:28:10driving the very
00:28:12same Duesenberg.
00:28:15Was that David Hobbs
00:28:16driving that thing?
00:28:18I tell you what
00:28:19it's not David Hobbs
00:28:20but here's
00:28:20Nicholas Prost
00:28:22son of
00:28:23four time world
00:28:23Formula One champion
00:28:25Alain Prost
00:28:26who was here
00:28:26earlier in the week.
00:28:27I'd never seen
00:28:28Alain Prost
00:28:29in the flesh
00:28:30before
00:28:30and he is
00:28:31so tiny
00:28:32I had no idea
00:28:33that he was
00:28:34so diminutive
00:28:35and still
00:28:36very very fit
00:28:37still into cycling
00:28:38big time
00:28:39and Peugeot
00:28:39took a second chance
00:28:40a second bite
00:28:41at where he was
00:28:42turning in
00:28:42there were too many
00:28:43people
00:28:43in
00:28:44where he wanted
00:28:45to take that
00:28:46shallow line
00:28:47into the pit box
00:28:47in the seven
00:28:48this is Jacques
00:28:49Villeneuve
00:28:49behind the wheel
00:28:50and so far
00:28:53so good
00:28:53in his
00:28:54night time
00:28:54stint
00:28:55what do you
00:28:57make of the
00:28:57Peugeot
00:28:58Storce
00:28:58you like it?
00:28:59I really like
00:28:59I mean
00:28:59it's a very
00:29:00sexy car
00:29:01and I'm
00:29:01quite impressed
00:29:01it's gone
00:29:02this long
00:29:02or this far
00:29:03into the race
00:29:03because
00:29:04it was built
00:29:05it looks like
00:29:06a little
00:29:06Formula One
00:29:06car with a
00:29:07body
00:29:07and it really
00:29:08didn't look
00:29:08to me
00:29:08like it was
00:29:09built for
00:29:09an endurance
00:29:10type of mode
00:29:11it looks
00:29:11like a
00:29:11sprinter
00:29:12well just
00:29:13to get a
00:29:14ride at
00:29:14Le Mans
00:29:14these days
00:29:15you are
00:29:16fortunate
00:29:17to have
00:29:17your ride
00:29:18taken away
00:29:19from you
00:29:19and
00:29:19get it
00:29:21given
00:29:21grab another
00:29:23one in
00:29:23another car
00:29:24well you know
00:29:24that you were
00:29:25meant to
00:29:25race this
00:29:26year
00:29:26I'm talking
00:29:26about
00:29:27Stefan Johansson
00:29:28he's with
00:29:28Justin
00:29:28why did you
00:29:31have to bring
00:29:31up the guys
00:29:32in the booth
00:29:32that just said
00:29:33you've had
00:29:33one heck
00:29:34of a week
00:29:34and it's
00:29:34not going
00:29:35much better
00:29:35right now
00:29:36it doesn't
00:29:38stop
00:29:39it's just
00:29:39I don't know
00:29:39what we're in
00:29:40for now
00:29:40but it's
00:29:41probably about
00:29:41I don't know
00:29:42fifth or sixth
00:29:43stop in the
00:29:45garage
00:29:45so it's
00:29:46not going
00:29:47too well
00:29:47now tell me
00:29:48obviously in the
00:29:49middle of the
00:29:49week when it
00:29:49all went upside
00:29:50down
00:29:50for you
00:29:51you were
00:29:52almost ready
00:29:52to jump
00:29:53back on the
00:29:53plane and go
00:29:54home or
00:29:54were you glad
00:29:55you stayed in the
00:29:56race
00:29:56I was actually
00:29:57I was back
00:29:58in my bags
00:29:58and everything
00:29:59and ready to
00:29:59leave the track
00:30:00and somehow
00:30:01Courage must have
00:30:02found out
00:30:03and they called
00:30:04me to come
00:30:05down to
00:30:05scrutineering
00:30:06and we chatted
00:30:08a bit
00:30:08and decided
00:30:09it was worth
00:30:10having a go
00:30:11well you've
00:30:12got to make
00:30:13your number
00:30:13privately
00:30:14listed
00:30:14make your number
00:30:15privately listed
00:30:16in the future
00:30:17and you won't
00:30:17get these calls
00:30:18thanks for the
00:30:19tip
00:30:19alright
00:30:20that was Stefan
00:30:21I know you'll
00:30:21be back out later
00:30:22what do I mean
00:30:22well what the
00:30:23story there to
00:30:25elaborate
00:30:26he was meant to
00:30:26be in the number
00:30:2710
00:30:27the arena car
00:30:28and that car
00:30:29crashed heavily
00:30:30at the pre-test
00:30:32day
00:30:32they simply couldn't
00:30:33get it ready
00:30:34in time
00:30:34so as Stefan
00:30:36said he was on
00:30:36his way home
00:30:37and then
00:30:38Yves Courage
00:30:40called
00:30:40the team
00:30:40wanted him to
00:30:41race in the
00:30:4213 alongside
00:30:43the very fast
00:30:44Sean Mark
00:30:44Goodon
00:30:45and Guillaume
00:30:46Moreau
00:30:46who similarly
00:30:48crashed the
00:30:4913 at the
00:30:50pre-test day
00:30:51and they had to
00:30:51scramble to get
00:30:52the 13 ready
00:30:53so Stefan
00:30:54unfortunately the
00:30:55week is not
00:30:56getting all that
00:30:57much better
00:30:57but they will
00:30:58hang in there
00:30:59and keep on
00:31:00soldiering on
00:31:01and that's what
00:31:01it's all about
00:31:02Dorsey
00:31:02he'll keep
00:31:04going for sure
00:31:05I mean
00:31:06you don't want
00:31:06to be at this
00:31:07race
00:31:07you really do
00:31:08whether you're
00:31:08in a car
00:31:08or not
00:31:09I mean
00:31:09this is a
00:31:09huge event
00:31:10and if
00:31:11nothing else
00:31:11just to be
00:31:12seen here
00:31:13is very
00:31:13important
00:31:14the 54
00:31:18the team
00:31:19Orica
00:31:19Selene
00:31:20up and
00:31:21running
00:31:22with Nicholas
00:31:25Cross
00:31:25behind the
00:31:26wheel
00:31:26plenty more
00:31:27when we
00:31:28return to
00:31:28LaSar

00:31:47because when
00:31:47you make it

00:32:07on Pit Road
00:32:08let's talk
00:32:09Alan McNish
00:32:09for a moment
00:32:10he's not in a
00:32:11Courage
00:32:11but he's
00:32:11certainly
00:32:12in an Audi
00:32:12and here's
00:32:13a quick snapshot
00:32:14of Alan's
00:32:15record at
00:32:16Le Mans
00:32:16I remember
00:32:171998
00:32:18when he was
00:32:18driving that
00:32:19beautiful
00:32:19Porsche
00:32:20GT1
00:32:21to win
00:32:22outright
00:32:22and since
00:32:23then
00:32:24there's been
00:32:24a lot of
00:32:25frustration
00:32:25involved in
00:32:26trying to
00:32:26get that
00:32:27second victory
00:32:28Chris
00:32:28so far
00:32:29so good
00:32:29for Squishy
00:32:30Lee
00:32:31it's 3.30
00:32:32in the morning
00:32:32and Alan
00:32:33McNish
00:32:33is half
00:32:34asleep
00:32:34but you've
00:32:34only got
00:32:35about another
00:32:35six minutes
00:32:36to wake up
00:32:36yeah
00:32:37that's not
00:32:38long
00:32:38not long
00:32:39to be honest
00:32:39with you
00:32:40I wish it was
00:32:40the 12
00:32:40hours of
00:32:41Sebring
00:32:41because the
00:32:41race will be
00:32:42over by now
00:32:42everything going
00:32:43well with
00:32:44the number
00:32:44two car
00:32:45so far
00:32:45you laid
00:32:45down
00:32:46a 3.27
00:32:47earlier today
00:32:47you have
00:32:48a couple
00:32:48more
00:32:48of those
00:32:48in you
00:32:49yeah
00:32:51basically
00:32:52everything's
00:32:52went well
00:32:53with the
00:32:53car
00:32:53it's
00:32:54ran from
00:32:54the start
00:32:55until now
00:32:55pretty
00:32:56without a
00:32:57problem
00:32:57the 3.27
00:32:59was a quick
00:32:59lap
00:33:00there was
00:33:00no question
00:33:00about it
00:33:01I'm sure
00:33:01we've got
00:33:01one of those
00:33:02somewhere
00:33:02not sure
00:33:03where
00:33:03but we've
00:33:03got one
00:33:04somewhere
00:33:04you've won
00:33:05this race
00:33:06before
00:33:06but never
00:33:07with Audi
00:33:07what would
00:33:08it mean
00:33:08to grab
00:33:08a victory
00:33:09with Audi
00:33:09grabbing
00:33:10a victory
00:33:11here
00:33:11whoever
00:33:12it's with
00:33:12is an
00:33:13important
00:33:13thing
00:33:13in the
00:33:13driver's
00:33:14CV
00:33:14there's
00:33:14no question
00:33:15about that
00:33:15you know
00:33:16we've had
00:33:17a lot
00:33:18really good
00:33:19runs
00:33:19with Audi
00:33:20in the
00:33:20American
00:33:20Le Moll
00:33:20series
00:33:21you know
00:33:21I've won
00:33:21two titles
00:33:22so far
00:33:22and a
00:33:23tremendous
00:33:23amount
00:33:23of races
00:33:24with Dindo
00:33:24and I
00:33:25think
00:33:25Dindo
00:33:26Tom and I
00:33:26feel
00:33:27we've got
00:33:27a wee bit
00:33:28of unfinished
00:33:28business
00:33:29after last
00:33:29year
00:33:30I think
00:33:30we'd better
00:33:31let him go
00:33:31so he can
00:33:31grab a cup
00:33:32of coffee
00:33:32before he
00:33:33gets behind
00:33:33the wheel
00:33:33well I'm
00:33:35kind of
00:33:36wondering
00:33:36which half
00:33:36of him
00:33:37is awake
00:33:37and which
00:33:37half
00:33:38of him
00:33:38is asleep
00:33:38because
00:33:39that's
00:33:39going to
00:33:39be
00:33:39a bit
00:33:39of importance
00:33:40here
00:33:40very shortly
00:33:41there's
00:33:42his teammate
00:33:42Marco
00:33:43Werner
00:33:43and it's
00:33:46been a
00:33:47very solid
00:33:47day for
00:33:48the Audi
00:33:48boys
00:33:49thus far
00:33:50wouldn't
00:33:50it be
00:33:50a great
00:33:50year
00:33:51for Alan
00:33:51if he
00:33:52could get
00:33:52there
00:33:52and get
00:33:53his second
00:33:53Le Moll
00:33:53win
00:33:54his good
00:33:54friend
00:33:54Dario
00:33:55Franchitti
00:33:55of course
00:33:56winning
00:33:56the
00:33:56Indianapolis
00:33:57500
00:33:57earlier
00:33:58this year
00:33:59just
00:33:59before
00:34:00we went
00:34:00to the
00:34:00break
00:34:00we were
00:34:01talking
00:34:01about
00:34:01young
00:34:01Nicolas
00:34:02Proston
00:34:02in
00:34:03that
00:34:03beautiful
00:34:04Orica
00:34:04Celine
00:34:05let's
00:34:05talk
00:34:06to
00:34:06the
00:34:06man
00:34:06himself
00:34:07here's
00:34:07Steve
00:34:07it's
00:34:09amazing
00:34:10who you
00:34:10find
00:34:10loitering
00:34:11in French
00:34:11pits
00:34:12at Le Mans
00:34:13Steve
00:34:14it's
00:34:14fantastic
00:34:14to see
00:34:14you
00:34:15are you
00:34:15enjoying
00:34:15your
00:34:15experience
00:34:16also in
00:34:17your new
00:34:17job
00:34:17yes
00:34:18obviously
00:34:19it's
00:34:20pretty
00:34:20exciting
00:34:20to be
00:34:20here
00:34:21we're
00:34:21a little
00:34:23more than
00:34:24half way
00:34:24through
00:34:25the race
00:34:25and both
00:34:26cars are
00:34:27still running
00:34:27very well
00:34:28so
00:34:28obviously
00:34:29one of
00:34:31the things
00:34:32that I
00:34:32know
00:34:33well about
00:34:33is the
00:34:34efficiency
00:34:35and the
00:34:35amazing
00:34:35tent
00:34:36of the
00:34:36Marinka
00:34:37now it
00:34:38must be
00:34:38fabulous
00:34:38to see
00:34:39your
00:34:39cars
00:34:39in
00:34:39their
00:34:40hands
00:34:40yes
00:34:41obviously
00:34:42we've
00:34:42gone
00:34:43through
00:34:43a lot
00:34:43of
00:34:43development
00:34:44with it
00:34:44the cars
00:34:45seem to
00:34:45be quite
00:34:45reliable
00:34:46we're running
00:34:47pretty much
00:34:48our own
00:34:48pace
00:34:48and we'll
00:34:49kind of
00:34:49see what
00:34:49happens
00:34:50in the
00:34:50last few
00:34:51hours
00:34:51now for
00:34:52viewers back
00:34:54in America
00:34:54I know
00:34:55they're going
00:34:55to want
00:34:55to talk
00:34:55about this
00:34:56quickly
00:34:56or hear
00:34:57about it
00:34:57you've got
00:34:57a lot
00:34:58of press
00:34:58recently
00:34:58you've
00:34:59moved
00:34:59on in
00:34:59your
00:35:00evolution
00:35:01of your
00:35:01business

00:35:03yes
00:35:07to where
00:35:09I'm still
00:35:10there in
00:35:10spirit
00:35:11and
00:35:11supporting
00:35:12the company
00:35:13but I'm
00:35:14I have

00:35:22that's very
00:35:22exciting
00:35:23it's a very
00:35:24big project
00:35:24and
00:35:25I've been
00:35:27over to
00:35:27China
00:35:28we've looked
00:35:28at the
00:35:29factory
00:35:29it really
00:35:30is the
00:35:30real deal
00:35:31and I'm
00:35:32pretty excited
00:35:33about doing
00:35:33that
00:35:33well
00:35:34all that
00:35:35we'll add
00:35:35is that
00:35:35if you can
00:35:36bring some
00:35:36of the
00:35:37majestic
00:35:37beauty

00:35:41you'll
00:35:41have
00:35:41done
00:35:42more
00:35:42than

00:35:42before you
00:35:44so thanks
00:35:44Steve
00:35:44okay
00:35:45it'll be
00:35:46interesting
00:35:46I've gone
00:35:48from one

00:35:52for $13,000
00:35:53but I think

00:36:04Synergy
00:36:04prototype
00:36:05the Lola
00:36:05AER
00:36:06Peter Owen
00:36:06behind the
00:36:07wheel
00:36:07and it
00:36:08seemed to be
00:36:09stranded there
00:36:09for a moment
00:36:10Dorsey but now
00:36:11it seems to
00:36:12have cleared
00:36:13got itself out
00:36:14of harm's way
00:36:14he had a spin
00:36:15and he was
00:36:16sitting there
00:36:16I don't know
00:36:17if you see a
00:36:18little bit of
00:36:18smoke right now
00:36:19out of the
00:36:19back of the
00:36:20car
00:36:20when he was
00:36:20trying to
00:36:21refire it
00:36:21there was a
00:36:22great deal
00:36:22of smoke
00:36:23like something
00:36:23had gone
00:36:24pretty badly
00:36:25wrong in the
00:36:26engine compartment
00:36:26but he hasn't
00:36:27fired now
00:36:28and I saw
00:36:29wisps of smoke
00:36:29but I don't
00:36:30see what I
00:36:32saw before
00:36:33so we'll see
00:36:33here in a minute
00:36:34because he's on
00:36:34pit lane
00:36:34the team owned
00:36:35and run by

00:36:38second consecutive
00:36:40year in the
00:36:40LMP1 class
00:36:41after having
00:36:43some time away
00:36:44from the top
00:36:45prototype category
00:36:46remember he ran
00:36:47the TVR Tuskans
00:36:49for several years
00:36:50and he said
00:36:52boy they were a
00:36:53handful
00:36:53he said I'm
00:36:53enjoying being
00:36:54back with
00:36:55prototype
00:36:55so Peter Owen
00:36:56gets the car
00:36:57back in the box
00:36:58the team go to
00:36:59work hard
00:36:59they didn't
00:37:00quite get it
00:37:00in the box
00:37:01as a matter
00:37:01of fact
00:37:02the team's
00:37:02working hard
00:37:02not to get
00:37:03run over
00:37:03now it's
00:37:04smoking pretty
00:37:04good out of
00:37:05the engine
00:37:05bay you see
00:37:06it there
00:37:06these guys
00:37:07were not
00:37:08ready for
00:37:08this pit
00:37:08stop obviously
00:37:09and whatever
00:37:11broke happened
00:37:12right down
00:37:13at the pit
00:37:14in entrance
00:37:14so he was
00:37:15lucky to get
00:37:16back there
00:37:17you can see
00:37:18on the side
00:37:18part of that

00:37:56that
00:37:57you know
00:37:57obviously
00:37:57the smoke's

00:37:58of the vents
00:37:59they seem
00:37:59particularly

00:40:17if you're
00:40:21interested in
00:40:38which particular
00:40:39manufacturer
00:40:40which particular mark is where in prototype one this is how it stands Audi Audi Peugeot
00:40:47Pescarolo and Peugeot the top five very successful run thus far through the first half of the 75th
00:40:55running of the Michelin 24 hours of Le Mans for Audi it's Lola Courage Zaytek the top three
00:41:02in P2 the class well this one they call it here the class that nobody wants to win
00:41:07really is the best last team standing how about the Astons they really want to take the fight to
00:41:15Corvette this year and that was made a whole lot easier by the retirement of the 64 Corvette it's
00:41:21down to Johnny O Ron Fellows and Jan Magnussen in the 63 look at that they are surrounded by Astons
00:41:29and in GT2 it's the Risi Ferrari over the IMSA Performance Porsche and then the Scuderia Ecosse
00:41:37Ferrari those 430s are a beautiful thing check this out there's activity down at the number two
00:41:43Audi pit Christensen is about to come in before we get to that let's take you to a piece about diesel
00:41:50power it's appropriate we're talking Audi diesel power at Le Mans and certainly Audi were not the
00:41:56first to turn up with it for those beautiful R10s prior to last year there were five diesels in total
00:42:01that had competed here the first was in 49 the most recent was this one in 2004 Ian Dawson's
00:42:08Taurus Racing and then of course the victorious 2006 effort in the R10s Werner Pirro Bieler
00:42:17a remarkable performance on debut to win
00:42:20of course all those diesels were old school type of diesels not nothing like today what we're seeing
00:42:27these diesels don't smoke folks they don't smell bad they don't make that knocking noise they don't make
00:42:32any noise and in the case of Peugeot you see on the side the HDI FAP FAP is a particulate filter and
00:42:40what that is is it takes the exhaust gas coming out of the exhaust pipe runs it through a filtration
00:42:44system which eliminates any size of matter that would come into the atmosphere thusly no smoke
00:42:51no smell pretty neat stuff what causes them to smoke you see you see particularly the R10 it smokes a lot
00:42:57on on exit of pit box when they do that when they shut it off in there I think it probably what it does
00:43:02is it brings oil into the cylinders when it starts itself back up it burns that initial oil off and
00:43:07then it won't smoke anymore until they shut it down again that was Nicolas Lapierre in the lead
00:43:13Orica Saline
00:43:14serviced and sent 13th overall and 6th in class that's the best of the Salines and we heard from
00:43:27Steve Saline earlier when he chatted with Justin very thrilled to see the cars out there circulating
00:43:32well and who knows what will happen in another 11 and a quarter hours time Bob Berridge brings the
00:43:40Chamberlain synergy prototype back on pit road I just made the analogy that they might smoke a lot
00:43:48of cigarettes here in France but there are no particulates flying around that's good
00:43:52Justin what's happening down there at Chamberlain
00:43:54you know I'd love to sound clever and be able to tell you I mean he came in they changed the rear
00:44:01left tire then he took his gloves off put them back on and they didn't they put a little splash
00:44:07I guess and I guess he's off so you know I just wish I could help you out but it was one of those
00:44:12weird stops maybe there was I'll try and find out what was wrong with the tire just for our records
00:44:16but they took out the left rear and off he goes again so know what Chamberlain needs you know
00:44:21they've got that oil problem and I'm sure they just don't want to keep coming in and out well
00:44:24Justin one time I hit a bump on the race tour of course and I chipped my tooth and so I spipped
00:44:29the tooth out of my hand and put it in my glove maybe that was what it was about but I doubt it
00:44:34you know well maybe I have a feeling that you know that's probably why you're such a fabulous
00:44:40good-looking man Dorsey is that missing tooth at the front of your mouth it's the first tooth at the front
00:44:46Alan McNish is standing by this is the big news almost 200 laps down
00:44:54Tom Christensen is in the third and final sector on this 8.4 mile circuit and he will bring it in
00:45:00after triple stinting you have to remember that it was only mid it was the 22nd of April when Tom
00:45:07was involved in that scary scary crash in the DTM series at Hockenheim severe whiplash trauma head
00:45:15injuries he was not in a good way to put it simply and it was very much in doubt whether he would
00:45:21even compete he is now just triple stinted at night Chris what a remarkable performance for the race
00:45:27lead up yeah Lee I don't think there's going to be any spitting of teeth down here in the Audi camp
00:45:32things much more surgical it is uh early evening back in the states 3 30 in the morning here in
00:45:37France and this team has done over 10 pit stops so everybody well planned checking all the vents and
00:45:43ducks on this Audi making sure that nothing is clogged up while they're getting a full tank of diesel on board
00:45:49and Tom Christensen handing over to Alan McNish fuel is done car up in the air putting on a fresh set of
00:45:57Michelin slicks how about the teamwork Chris just the way that Tom gets out starts assisting Alan
00:46:06you know it's amazing to watch these teams you know when you watch nascar formula one these teams over
00:46:12here in uh they're just so surgical everything is so planned there's really no thought involved it's
00:46:20just going through the motions uh Tom Christensen just went into the garage as soon as he gets his
00:46:24helmet off we'll be sure to get a couple words with him lovely thank you mate 20 car is in trouble
00:46:29this is not a good sign for the Pierre Bruno pill beam Mark Rostan Gavin Pickering Chris McAllister I think
00:46:37it's Gavin who is behind the wheel we saw him standing by earlier with that fluorescent yellow helmet
00:46:41that day glow helmet and is that down at uh Arnage doors it could well be I think it is and the
00:46:48thing I don't like that I'm looking at is the fact that he's turned the lights off you can see that
00:46:52there are lights down there on that corner uh so it's not totally dangerous but I don't like when a
00:46:57driver has spun a car has trouble and then in the middle of the night shuts the lights off of course
00:47:02it saves the battery but other drivers coming in that area would like to know that that car is there
00:47:07I mean there's some street lights so you can see that
00:47:18and they're working the corner people are helping him out there trying to
00:47:21he's unbelted himself looks like he's extricating himself from the car there's the trouble on this car
00:47:26no back end and a big hole in the front end 15 this is the sheroos racing system car this is doing
00:47:35well you know at the moment it's up there it's in the top six at the moment with yan sheroos behind
00:47:41the wheel see the big hole in the nose right front corner right underneath the headlight something's
00:47:49rock or something has gone through there done major damage could have been one of those cones the sole
00:47:53remaining panos esperante for the lnt team young american tom milner was in the sister car
00:48:02and this is bell stepping from the 82. it looks like they're going to put the rollers under it
00:48:07which means if they do that they're probably going to go into the garage as this car is
00:48:11so the sheroos car taken into the garage meanwhile dr ulrich converses with tom christensen
00:48:25about that marvelous triple stint the lnt guys go together go to work on the panels it's being taken
00:48:32into the box so dramas here for the 82 keep in mind that richard dean and lawrence tomlinson were a part
00:48:40of that winning trio last year the surprise winners for the panels esperante dr don panos was here to
00:48:48enjoy that victory sure not his team but the man who started the brand thomas leuch in the background
00:48:56there the crew chief on the number two listening to what tom christensen has to say about the audi r10
00:49:02this is a normal debrief as he's just come out the best time to talk to a driver is his mind is fresh
00:49:09and dr ulrich smiling as is tom christensen they're happy no no question that is a great stint three
00:49:16stints in that car nearly three hours behind the wheel look barely any sweat on him
00:49:21and here's the sheroos racing system prototype there's the damage you referred to dorsey and it's
00:49:28more than a hole it's completely delaminated the whole right front pod wheel pod you see it there
00:49:34it's cracked all the way alongside it so it needs a new nose tell us more justin uh it needs more than
00:49:42a nose job mate it needs a rear end job uh if you actually can see we look at the rear wing here look
00:49:49at the rear wing you can see that's completely broken in half as well as the venturi at the back
00:49:54i'd say although we didn't see it alive on tv this had a pretty significant uh off the whole car's kind
00:50:00of a bit buggered at the moment i saw when it came in it had no rear rear uh engine cover but it's more
00:50:05than that now that you've said the weight you're right it must have done a pirouette into the railing
00:50:10front and back or back than front yeah there's certainly a lot of action i mean it's obviously
00:50:17repairable by the look they're going to take the rear rear rear wing mounts off new front end and uh
00:50:21they'll get it back out but you know what that was uh the drivers disappeared out the back with his
00:50:25head between his tail right now yes i would and you would oh yeah don't worry i'd have been in my rental
00:50:33car by now so anyway they're doing their thing they you know this the great thing about prototypes as
00:50:39opposed to gt cars is that they're so easy to work on everything just comes off like a big lego
00:50:44set so we will see them uh get back on this you know with the gt car you you knacker a corner and
00:50:49it's all over for a while on these it's a lot more uh you know piece by piece so i'm sure we'll get
00:50:54them uh they'll get back on the road well we had a glimpse there of something off the road there was
00:50:59a luke alfon corvette doors on the security camera being towed out of harm's way it has not been
00:51:06a fabulous day here's the 006 labra aston
00:51:15regulation stopped from everything we can view from here i wonder what went down with that luke
00:51:20alfon corvette yeah you could just see that like you said that was a security camera shot
00:51:26they had a uh a record there but we don't know what's going on this is world feed so
00:51:30we're jumping around a little bit as they show us what they're finding
00:51:36and the 006 is released patrick bornhauser roland burville and gregor fisken the trio in this aston
00:51:44martin and gregor fisken has had a very busy weekend he deals in fine historic cars this tells us about
00:51:53gavin pickering in the uh pierre bruno pill beam and it was at arnaje it's just a simple spin got in
00:52:02there early on looks like a little bit of rear brake by us
00:52:09i can tell you more on the uh on the luke alfon car it was the 72 and luke alfon himself was behind the
00:52:18wheel it has come to a stop 16th in 16th overall and around 7th in class so frustration for the french
00:52:28skiing hero and who has uh really got very had some great results in the uh the parry dakar let's
00:52:37hear from tom christensen here's chris tom we're a little bit past halfway you've got almost a two
00:52:43lap lead on the sister car you're starting to think about that eighth win or is there still too much time
00:52:47on the clock yes much too much time on the clock we are racing uh that's uh absolutely the car's
00:52:54running good we had a very aggressive opening trying to trying to put all the pressure we could on
00:53:02everyone and um didn't do the magnificent first stints and then on the intermediate i was driving i was
00:53:10pretty pretty pleased with the car alan got uh extended the lead even further now i did three stints
00:53:16on the medium tires at night and the michelin's there working beautiful and um yeah so far everything
00:53:23good after that three stints any ill effects from the wreck at hockenheim
00:53:31i missed my my a little bit my daily training i feel i feel this at night because it i feel i use a
00:53:37little bit more resources now at night that i would do but anyway the next time i'm in the car it's um
00:53:44it's daylight again and then i hope to be back to uh my normal me you spoke to us earlier in the week
00:53:50about the sharp rocks and all the gravel traps what kind of shape is the track in
00:53:55not too bad but there are a few spinning cars but there has been gravel down after dunlop down through
00:54:01the the s's but not much and i would say when people people have not brought too much gravel on there
00:54:08the circuit is in a pretty good state good luck also had a chance to check in with the team lee on
00:54:13the number three car that wreck that mike rockenfeller had very early in the race the team said that the
00:54:19track was still quite slippery after that first rain we had and mike was just pushing a little bit too
00:54:25hard said probably you know a 23 year old driver first time in the car at le mans just uh pushing a
00:54:31little bit too hard a little bit of an experience so they are saying that it was his fault in that
00:54:36accident well we feel for rocky because he is a super driver and here we have luke alfon brings the
00:54:44uh the corvette back on pit road the eight was in as well stefan sarrazin has the uh the peugeot 908 on
00:54:51pit road and as the team go to work at luke alfon let's just revisit the tom christensen situation
00:55:01dorsey as we go back to hockenheim april 22nd look at this is that not one of the biggest you've seen
00:55:09yeah that is as big a hit as you could possibly get both cars totally destroyed look at that i mean just
00:55:14drove all the way through the car lucky lucky guy christensen to get away with even the injuries he
00:55:22did get which were pretty substantial yeah to revisit that story it was one of the stories right at the
00:55:26top of our show earlier today it is truly a miracle that he is even here and let alone to be as fit and
00:55:33as alert and as sharp as he is it wasn't his choice he had to get medical clearance to be allowed to race
00:55:40here and he has just triple stinted at night what a man that's why he is the best at le mans the seven
00:55:46time winner will it be eight
00:56:10welcome back to the michelin 24 hours of le mans thomas inga getting ready to take over from peter
00:56:15cox currently leading gt1 thomas you've had a few stints behind the wheel we just talked to one injured
00:56:20driver tom christensen now you the elbow how's everything holding up well i've done already four
00:56:27hours four stints in the car and right now we've got what 3 30 4 30 in the morning and uh it's already
00:56:37quite painful i would say but um i still need to be strong and we still need to bring you know both
00:56:44cars to the finish uh the best high car also in the first position you won this race back in 2003
00:56:52what's it going to take to get the aston martin up there and close this thing out in front of the corvette
00:56:58well at this moment it looks like we've got really fast car reliable as well so we just need to run
00:57:04without problems without mistakes uh and uh hopefully i will think you will stay together
00:57:10the whole car like like it is now and we can clock until um until the end of the race uh on these
00:57:16positions good luck i think we better let thomas go the crew is starting to get up getting ready for
00:57:22the 007 and the 009 to come in for pit stop well he knows what it's like to win here at le mans in class
00:57:28this was back when it was gts days and the pro drive 550 marinello ferrari he peter cox and jamie
00:57:35davis won but then in the following years absolute frustration dorsey where they said if it was the
00:57:4221 hours of le mans they would have won that's the worst way to go out get all the way up there 21
00:57:48hours in all your work's done you're thinking you've got a one and then right with this to the
00:57:52finish line inside it all goes bad it happens a lot it was good for the corvette boys though
00:57:57doug fian and the gang got to rub it in pro drives came so close but yet so far those following two
00:58:04years can they go all the way well the last time thomas won in class was with peter cox he's driving
00:58:12with peter cox again he also has f1 legend and uh british racing hero johnny herbert in that aston martin
00:58:20so it's all looking good at the moment it is works astons one and two in gt1 and they have a lap
00:58:27unfortunately for the american fans they have a one-lap lead on the corvette jan magnuson right now
00:58:34driving that one lap is not a lot it's eight miles but it's not a lot if something should go wrong
00:58:39and just to reiterate a point that we made a little earlier on we are at the hands of the world feed
00:58:46suppliers because it's in the middle of the night they do give the french cameraman some relief the
00:58:51the guys who are operating on the back stretch uh les henoudier malsan around in indianapolis uh
00:58:58down in the deep dark stretches of this track they do give the cameraman relief that's why we get a lot
00:59:04of vision on the front stretch and in pit lane and uh it's not a uh an ideal situation for us us either
00:59:11so we appreciate your patience at home folks and uh we are giving you as good as we possibly can and uh
00:59:19when uh daylight breaks the uh the cameraman come back on and then we get full course coverage so
00:59:26we uh continue here is the double zero eight aston on pit road and gee they have performed well so far
00:59:34the labra competition this is the one with christoph boucher and ironically this is the man who won the
00:59:40last time perjot was here boucher was part of that successful trio in 1993 when jean tot was at the
00:59:48helm of that team with the then the then perjot 905 guiding it to victory lane and the double zero eight
00:59:57it's christoph boucher forbizio gollen and kasper elgaard the danish driver the trio in this car all
01:00:04highly experienced dorsey indeed they are looks like forbizio gollen is going to stay in the car this looks
01:00:09routine uh nobody in any kind of a hurry they're going to double stint those tires i don't see any tires
01:00:16out there take fuel only and release simple as that if you're just tuning in we know that it's a perfect time
01:00:25back home in the states alan mcnish is leading the way for audi sport north america he has a two lap lead
01:00:31over the sister audi of marco verner and then f1 star jacques villeneuve in his debut performance
01:00:38at lemar is running third he is a further three laps down on marco verner then roman dumar who we know
01:00:45also well for the penske porsches in the american lemar series is running fourth outright for henry pescarolo
01:00:53and then stefan sarrazin in the second peugeot 908 is in the top five we see another aston martin
01:00:59on pit road is this the 007 it's the class leading car peter cox is in driver change no doubt about that
01:01:07we see peter getting out this can all be done while they're fueling the driver change can be done the
01:01:14window can be cleaned nothing else can be done they have tires and rudiment but that won't happen until
01:01:19the fueling is done chris lee this is another very precise team down here in pit lane the sister car
01:01:27a little over 50 seconds behind this one so there's a good chance it could take the lead after this pit
01:01:32stop but they're both a little bit off on their pit stops right now so that car was in just a little
01:01:38while ago and we'll expect it in probably in about another seven or so laps but this team very quick
01:01:43pit stop inga already behind the wheel and the car down in a way that had to have been less than a minute
01:01:49what i'm seeing right there chris is that car is spotless i mean it doesn't have anything
01:01:53marked up on it it's very clean the guys have been doing a good job of cleaning the windscreen and
01:01:58everything every time it comes in it's where you want a car to look after you know half a day of
01:02:03racing around here what you have to remember too is that the pro drive house if you wish to call it that
01:02:10is so sophisticated so savvy and they have a finger in a lot of different pies whether you want to talk
01:02:16about it in world rally sense over the years v8 supercars in australia sports cars in europe of
01:02:22course pro drive and their f1 aspirations as well they know where it went wrong in the years where
01:02:28they were leading and could have perhaps should have won whether it was quality control issues human
01:02:34error issues and i think george howard chapel and his man dave richards at the helm of pro drive they
01:02:41know where they went wrong and they are going to try and rectify that situation in 2007. here's jan
01:02:47lama's racing for holland prototype it's in and the 14 has sadly slid down the order it was running nice
01:02:55and strong earlier in the race but now they're uh substantially down the order trying to claw their way back
01:03:03in the dome it's currently 24th outright your own bleak molen uh just stepped from the car he won the
01:03:12most recent round of the porsche super cup at uh at monaco he was a guest there though so he didn't get
01:03:19full points and patrick hoistman who we know so well from the rolex sports car series patrick gathered
01:03:25the full 20 points there on the streets of monte carlo bleak molen is a very handy driver and
01:03:32he partners jan lammers the dutch star along with david hart as well in that dome powered machine
01:03:42oh the dome chassis so the dutch machine back out and adam
01:03:49as we leave you with an overview of our respective top three in the classes
