00:00:00you know there's one race that you look forward to all season you know especially in the off
00:00:09season when you're training and it's Le Mans. Seldom in your life when you look forward to
00:00:14something for as long as I have does it exceed your expectations and every part of this event
00:00:18did just that. It's the first time and I'm kicking myself like why I didn't come here
00:00:22like 10-15 years ago. You know you get chills up and down your spine every time you come out here.
00:00:30First hour highlights and as the trickler flew Alan McNish led this 50 car field into turn one.
00:00:40Look to the left though there's Jan Lammers the racing for Holland Dome making a move and then
00:00:44Fabio Buffini caused the first full course yellow a massive accident from one Aston to another and
00:00:50quite a substantial oil leak on the 007 pole sitting GT1 car and early on at the 45 minute mark
00:00:58Frank Bieler put a move on his teammate Alan McNish to take over the lead of this race but look how
00:01:04close this was. The Pierre Bruneau LMP 2 car almost took out one of the R10 Audis.
00:01:14Welcome back to Le Mans everyone. Lee Diffie along with David Hobbs and Dorsey Schrader
00:01:18and the Aqua Velva race reset shows you where we are at after the first hour. It seemed like the
00:01:27longest lead in but it's great to get this first hour out of the way. Let's get it down to the pits.
00:01:33Calvin Fish what do you have for us Cal? Well we're down here with the guy who had that massive shot in the early
00:01:38going Fabio. Fabio first of all are you okay? Yeah I'm okay only the problem was the race. It's very long but
00:01:46after four laps I touched the oil with another car. With the corner cutting this was a big big problem
00:01:54for the corner of the car because not have a place, not have space in the outside of the corner
00:02:02for the car. I have a big crash but I'm very incredible. Very disappointed I'm sure. Were you
00:02:10feeling the oil Fabio before you got to that? Yeah it is. I'm checking from me the Aston Martin
00:02:17with the problem. A little look at the rear wheel but it's immediately for me to start braking. In this case
00:02:25there was more and more oversteering. It's incredible but this case was a big big crash and big big
00:02:32problem. Okay sorry to see you out. We got to get back. I think the Corvette may have a problem. That's
00:02:36right. The 63 Corvette has spun. Look at the big kid marks. They tell the story. Whoa. And finally gets
00:02:44back in the right direction. Wow well he's had a spin and he's lucky he didn't make car release. It doesn't
00:02:49look like he made contact but he backed up on the circuit. It's usually not a good thing. Of course
00:02:55he had to get room to spin that car around. Well I wonder if he got caught up in some other traffic.
00:03:01It's not like him to be making just a mistake like that. Well he caught it at the end unfortunately
00:03:07right there but the car was totally backwards. Here the guys get ready. Probably going to do tires.
00:03:13maybe flat spots I would assume. Yeah that when you that is a scary place to have a spin here at
00:03:21Circa de la Sarve. But Johnny O will bring that car in. And the guys will go to work. We do have an
00:03:29on-board replay of that. Here we go. Take a listen see what happens here.
00:03:35Yes. There was contact. There I thought I saw a dent in the guardrail but you don't see much of a dent in the back of the Corvette.
00:03:48That looked like almost like a cold tire. Do you know what I think he was trying to do? I think he was trying to stay out of the way of the Audi and he got off line and there's a bit of dust and rubber collecting there already. The old clag is starting because there's a long way to go yet. I think he just lost concentration looking in the mirror for the Audi.
00:04:04Well we've got Brian Till, Calvin Fish and Andrew Marriott in pit lane. The boys will update us as the Corvette team go to work to assess it. How does it look, Calvin?
00:04:14Well Johnny O is staying behind the wheel. I just had a quick word with Doug Feehan. I said what caused it. He said he had been reporting some kind of steering issue on the car. So they're certainly going to be taking the car in. There's a little bit of damage here on the rear clip where he made contact with the tire wall. I assume I haven't seen the pictures.
00:04:31But they're going to get this thing fueled up. They're going to spin it around and put it back in the garage and affect some repairs here. Johnny looks like he's going to stay in the car. But these guys can work miracles.
00:04:41But right now we're seeing the Aston having problems early and the Corvettes. We didn't see that last year.
00:04:48Well talking about steering issues. That's just superficial. That body damage won't do anything to the car and it didn't hit on that rear wheel which is good.
00:04:54But I can't believe how little damage there is because it did give the old guardrail a pretty good belt.
00:04:59Yeah it gave it a thump bar. I mean he could be having power steering failure or any number of things.
00:05:04Max Pappas standing by. Of course the trio of Ron Fellows, Johnny O'Connell who is now out of the car.
00:05:10And Max Pappas standing by.
00:05:14Well Johnny's gotten out. Max getting in.
00:05:17Or about to get in it looks like.
00:05:18Yeah it's a hot day today and if you can get away with not double stinting, the Audi guys are double stinting, if you can get away with it, obviously you're better off.
00:05:30Now we are expecting the 16 Pescarolo to be in shortly and that is the end of pit lane where they are situated all the way down at pit inn.
00:05:42They are the first two garages in this very lengthy pit lane here at Le Mans.
00:05:46Andrew?
00:05:48Yes indeed. Well this is the old Porsche garage of course down here.
00:05:51This has seen a lot of winning cars, this first garage.
00:05:55Looks if a second set of Michelins is going on this car.
00:05:59Remember this is the car which stopped very early and they wheeled the Michelins away.
00:06:03I think they're not going to add those.
00:06:04And very interesting, these Michelin tyres that are going on to the Pescarolo, if indeed they do,
00:06:10were developed for the new Audi.
00:06:12They are taller and larger than the tyres which were used last year.
00:06:16And indeed Pescarolo have had to change all the mud guards of the car, if you will.
00:06:22No tyres required, Manu Collar goes out.
00:06:25And of course that car on a different fuel strategy to the Audi.
00:06:29So very good pit stop there and they're happy with the tyre wear too.
00:06:33This is the car that took the fight to the Audis last year until a gearbox problem took them out of the fight for the lead.
00:06:40Can they go all the way this year?
00:06:42Of course the mud guards that Andrew is referring to are the fenders in the United States.
00:06:47Right, exactly.
00:06:48And there's those big bulbous fenders at the back because the tyre's taller.
00:06:51Well, let's get an update on Corvette.
00:06:54Calvin is there with Johnny O'Connell.
00:06:57Well, Johnny's just giving a report here to the engineer and trying to listen here.
00:07:01Just got away from me, so...
00:07:04Other than that, other than that, it's pretty good.
00:07:06I mean...
00:07:06Was it loose?
00:07:07It was starting to go loose.
00:07:09No, for the most part we were good.
00:07:12Johnny, big problem out there, mate.
00:07:14What was going on?
00:07:15You know, we...
00:07:17Try and get out of the way here so the boys can work.
00:07:21No, we've got a really good car and getting towards the end of the stint on those tyres.
00:07:26And to be honest with you, I don't know whether I got into something or it just got away from me.
00:07:30I mean, it's just a real slow, lazy spin that I didn't think I was going to have the room there to catch.
00:07:36So, you know, hopefully these guys can get a fix pretty quick.
00:07:39I saw the Audis coming up behind you.
00:07:41Was that an issue at all, Johnny, or were you just doing your own thing?
00:07:43No, I was doing my own thing.
00:07:45I wasn't worrying about those guys too much.
00:07:47And it, you know, and we got, you know, our guys spotting and letting us know where they are.
00:07:52It's, you know, it's frustrating.
00:07:54And I feel bad for all the guys that, you know, work so hard.
00:07:56You don't like to get into your, you know, first one and a half stints and do this.
00:08:00But better now than later.
00:08:02We've got plenty of time to go here and who knows what's going to happen.
00:08:04All right, mate.
00:08:05Hang in there.
00:08:06Well, we heard him talking about the car being loose.
00:08:09He told his engineer that the car was starting to get loose toward the end of the fuel or the stint on those tires.
00:08:15So that's something we can watch as the race goes on.
00:08:18That was, you know, pretty early on to have the tires going off.
00:08:21Well, exactly.
00:08:21That means there'll be no double stinting or looking unlikely to be double stinting.
00:08:26The view from the front.
00:08:29This is race leader Alan McNish.
00:08:32And just look at the speed differential between the LMP1 car and the GT2 car.
00:08:37That's one of the Panos entries.
00:08:39I know.
00:08:40I love that new camera angle, by the way.
00:08:43There's a new company in charge of the worldwide feed here at Le Mans this year.
00:08:47And they've done a good job in relocating some of the camera positions as Alan whips by one of the Spiker Squadron GT2 cars.
00:08:54We've got a very slow-moving red.
00:08:56Is that the leader?
00:08:57Is that the 87 car?
00:08:59It's the red Ferrari.
00:09:00I didn't get the number.
00:09:01But it's limping along there.
00:09:03And that's why that waving white flag is a slow-moving vehicle flag.
00:09:0720 laps down for Alan McNish as the Audis continue to lead.
00:09:31We'll be back.
00:09:37And by AquaVelva.
00:10:03AquaVelva keeps your face toned and fit.
00:10:06You know what women say?
00:10:07It just feels better with an AquaVelva man.
00:10:12Well, Dorse, you can take the hair color.
00:10:14David, you can take the AquaVelva and I'll take the Lexus.
00:10:16Absolutely.
00:10:18Thanks a lot.
00:10:21I don't think I came out on the deal.
00:10:22If you have the AquaVelva and you have the hair color, then you can get the Lexus.
00:10:26Exactly.
00:10:27Back to things here at the Michelin 24 Hours of Le Mans.
00:10:31And we get a look a little further down the order at one of our American teams, the Asimco Motorsports.
00:10:38Celine, the trio of Johnny Mollum, Terry Borchella and Christian Fittipaldi.
00:10:43And wasn't that telling earlier when Christian said after the fabulous career he's had in both Champ Car and Formula One,
00:10:49he's even done a little bit of stock car racing to say he's kicking himself.
00:10:52He's left it this long.
00:10:54This is his first appearance at La Saffe.
00:10:56Well, Johnny O'Connell said, you know, makes the hair on the back of his head, you know,
00:11:01go goosebumps all over when he comes here.
00:11:03But it is, there is something about this place.
00:11:05There's no doubt about it.
00:11:06It is an awesome track to drive on.
00:11:0863 back out on track with Max Pappas behind the wheel.
00:11:11That's a good sign.
00:11:13It wasn't a good sign seeing it spin and crash into the barrier.
00:11:17But the Corvette boys can fix cars like no other.
00:11:21And Max is on his way.
00:11:23And speaking of Pappas, as we continue to watch the Asimco Celine,
00:11:27Pappas said he had the scariest drive of his life the other night during that wet qualifying session.
00:11:33He said his foot was buried to the floor, but he couldn't see anything.
00:11:37And he said it reminded, he thought he was in the movie Days of Thunder.
00:11:40He said it was fog, clear, fog, clear.
00:11:43And he just had to believe himself that he was going to be okay.
00:11:45Talked to Marco Werner as well.
00:11:47Several drivers actually who said that this, they've done some paving on this racetrack and it's brand new.
00:11:53And when that rain came out the other night, it just turned into a skating.
00:11:56And Marco said it was the scariest drive he'd ever had his entire life.
00:11:59Almost crashed the car.
00:12:01He said he saw a flame, which was the down shelf.
00:12:04I was a tailpipe.
00:12:04It was about one foot in front of his car.
00:12:06He never saw the car, just the flame.
00:12:08It's a massive weekend for the 64 Corbett.
00:12:10They are going for the hat trick of class victories and Ollie Gavins with Cal.
00:12:15He is.
00:12:15And they've also got a remarkable record going on over in the States with eight consecutive victories.
00:12:19But Ollie Gavins, great opening stint there.
00:12:21Are you surprised the problems we're seeing with some of the other GT1 cars falling off the road?
00:12:25Well, it seems to be very tricky out there at the moment.
00:12:29Every corner, every lap has a different characteristic.
00:12:33Sometimes it'll have a lot of grip and the next time coming around, you'll be sliding all over the track and the braking zones are quite tricky.
00:12:40It seems that there are a lot of people either putting oil down or fluids down or going off the track, dragging stuff back on.
00:12:45So you have to be really paying attention with the marshals looking and seeing on the track.
00:12:50And I know for sure that Mulsanne corner and Arnage is very bad at the moment, so I just warned Olivier about that.
00:12:57But the start was a bit crazy because there was a P car that was very slow or almost stalled, I think.
00:13:03And it bottled Darren up.
00:13:06So I then nipped to the left to pass Darren and I just borrowed Pedro.
00:13:10And then I had a bit of a look on the outside of Pedro coming into the first chicane.
00:13:14And I thought, well, it's a long race. There's a long way to go. Don't risk anything right now, just staying behind him.
00:13:21We seem to just about have the legs on them if we needed to push.
00:13:25The boys got us to the end of pit stops, as they always do.
00:13:29And, you know, we managed to just pull a little bit of a gap.
00:13:33But I think it's going to be tight, nip and tuck all the way.
00:13:36I can't see that there's going to be any let's up. It's going to be flat down for 24 hours.
00:13:41All right, mate, get some rest.
00:13:42Thanks.
00:13:42Just a quick update on the other machine.
00:13:44The 63 car is now back on track.
00:13:47They had to change out the rear wind and the tow rod end.
00:13:51So a little bit of a problem, but a quick repair here by the Corvette team.
00:13:54Let's go to Andrew.
00:13:55And repairs here on the number 50 car as well.
00:13:58The scarlet red Ferrari car.
00:14:00Down is out.
00:14:01The veteran born house is in.
00:14:03It's only a bit lucky here.
00:14:04It's tore up some of the rear bodywork, as you can see.
00:14:06But just above that bodywork, there's a little sticker, boys.
00:14:10And I think that this is a rather dodgy website.
00:14:14I'm not going to give you the web address, but it's something to do with a girl called Julie.
00:14:18Over to you, Brian.
00:14:19Do you know Julie?
00:14:20Negative, Andrew.
00:14:22I do not know Julie.
00:14:23But what I do know is that the 009 Aston Martin was in during that last break.
00:14:28Thomas Inga stayed in that car.
00:14:29Tire and fuels only.
00:14:31And that is significant because if you'll remember last year, drivers in those Aston Martins suffered significantly from the high temperatures in that cockpit.
00:14:40Now, the team has done a lot to reduce that temperature this year, correcting a lot more air through the front of the car and cooling those drivers.
00:14:47It seems to be paying dividends.
00:14:48It is over 90 degrees out here on the racetrack, and it's got to be well over 120 in the car.
00:14:54Pedro Lamy stayed in, I should say.
00:14:56So it's Audi 1 and 2.
00:14:58Magnician Beeler, Montagne for Pescarolo on screen on the right-hand side as he comes by the Chamberlain Synergy prototype.
00:15:04And his teammate, Emmanuel Collard, is third, followed by the Courage Mugen in fifth place.
00:15:11The trio of Jean-Marc Gunon and the two Japanese drivers.
00:15:16It was interesting to hear what Oliver Gavin said then about the track because I've been watching the scoring monitor here.
00:15:22And everybody's best lap compared to what they're doing right now are significantly different.
00:15:27The best lap that Montagne did was a 3.36 early on.
00:15:30He's now doing 3.41s.
00:15:32Collard did a 35.
00:15:33He's now doing 45.
00:15:35The Courage, number 13, doing 48s as was doing 38s.
00:15:40The only guy that doesn't seem to be oblivious to the whole thing is Alan McNish.
00:15:43He's just done a 3.35.
00:15:46His best is a 3.33.
00:15:48So the track does seem to have slowed up a lot, and it seems to be affecting the bigger cars more than the prototype ones.
00:15:54And remember, some of these guys on double stints, particularly McNish, is on a double stint on his Michelins.
00:16:00So you would expect some fall off.
00:16:02Some fall off anyway, yeah.
00:16:04But obviously there has been some oil and stuff dropped around the track.
00:16:08There you see Alex Jung in the dome that was running so well.
00:16:11It was up to third, then had the drive-through penalty.
00:16:13And then Jan Lambers came in early because he thought he had a puncture from the puncture sensor, and it wasn't.
00:16:20And of course nobody was ready for him.
00:16:22Of course he did the right thing and blamed his teammate.
00:16:24Absolutely.
00:16:26He didn't take any himself.
00:16:29Well, Alex Jung has had a fair variety of driving experiences, hasn't he, since his Formula One days for Minardi.
00:16:36He's since gone on and raced A1 Grand Prix, won a race there.
00:16:40He's even done some V8 supercar racing in Australia, and the creation, Autos 14th, is in the lane.
00:16:47These guys have made a tough start to the race.
00:16:49Dreadful start.
00:16:50Alex Jung actually has pulled that car up.
00:16:52He was down to 10th.
00:16:53He's now back to 7th.
00:16:54So he, in fact, his best lap was a 3.39, or the car's best lap was a 3.39, and his last lap was a 3.39.
00:17:02Looks like now they're looking at the front of it.
00:17:04We reported rear brake problems and sat there for quite a while now.
00:17:08Now they're not working on it at all, so I'm not sure.
00:17:11Well, they had all the master saunders off the lane for all the brakes, so...
00:17:15Montaigne's in.
00:17:16This is the 17th Pescarolo.
00:17:19Andrew is standing by.
00:17:20Yeah, Frank Montaigne is in here, the pink helmet of the current Formula One driver for Super
00:17:32Aguri Racing, and the team ushering all the cameramen away.
00:17:37It's a bit of a scrum down here, as you can imagine.
00:17:40They have another set of Michelin's ready to go on this.
00:17:42These new, taller Michelin's, as I said, developed for the Alvinar on this car, but they certainly
00:17:47work well on it, and some probably are jostled here a little bit, but no, they decided to
00:17:52sail on that centre tyre, so they're getting some very good tyre wear on the Pescarolo,
00:17:59and this team seems very happy at the moment.
00:18:03One of the drivers from the lead Audi is, of course, Dindo Capello.
00:18:08First of all, Dindo, happy 42nd birthday to you.
00:18:12Sorry, I don't...
00:18:13Happy birthday.
00:18:14Your hearing's going, you're getting old.
00:18:16Thank you very much.
00:18:18Thank you very much.
00:18:18I was not...
00:18:19I don't think at the moment of my birthday.
00:18:21I've just followed the race, and it was really tough, the beginning of the race.
00:18:26Now it looks like it got a little bit quieter, but, you know, in a few laps I will be in the
00:18:33car, and I'm still...
00:18:34I'm already thinking of my driving.
00:18:37Talking about being quiet, this new diesel power plant that you're racing with this year
00:18:41is quite remarkable in terms of speed, but from when you're behind the wheel, how does
00:18:45it feel?
00:18:45What's the difference?
00:18:46What's the sensation?
00:18:48Yeah, the sensation at the beginning was really strange, because, you know, you don't
00:18:52hear nothing, you don't get any help from the engine noise.
00:18:56It's so quiet that you just feel the air on your helmet.
00:18:59And especially here in Le Mans, when you drive through the Porsche corner, and you just feel
00:19:04how the car behaves.
00:19:06At the beginning, it's really, really strange, but at the end, it's unbelievable.
00:19:10I would say good, unbelievable good, because with your body, you feel every small movement
00:19:15of the car that's really, really...
00:19:18I like it a lot.
00:19:19Okay, one final question.
00:19:21Now, when you were running the American Le Mans series, you didn't have any grey hair,
00:19:24and suddenly it turned grey overnight.
00:19:26Were you tricking us for all those years with some Brian Till hair colour?
00:19:29Did you have hair colour before?
00:19:31I had it for quite a while, because I thought when I was 28, 30, they said, oh, grey hair,
00:19:37make me older.
00:19:38But then at one stage, 2003, I said, okay, if I win Le Mans, I stop to colour it, and then
00:19:44I stop.
00:19:44Actually, I stop after pre-qualifying already.
00:19:47When I did Le Mans 2003, I was already getting grey.
00:19:50All right, mate, good luck.
00:19:51So you've got to assume that Brian Tillard looked just like that, too, then.
00:19:55Yeah, he would.
00:19:56Probably was, actually.
00:19:57Dindo Capello.
00:19:59He's won one in an Audi.
00:20:00He's won one in a Bentley.
00:20:02Can he go all the way again?
00:20:04They've relocated the famous Ferris wheel here at Circuit de la Salle, and this will be lit
00:20:09up beautifully later tonight.
00:20:11Back shortly.
00:20:11The combination of front-engine cars and 24 hours of intense racing at Le Mans, especially
00:20:25in hot weather, can mean some brutal conditions for drivers.
00:20:28Just ask Justin Bell, who suffered heat exhaustion after getting out of his Corvette in 2000.
00:20:33David Brabham was another example after he got out of the Aston Martin DBR9 late in last
00:20:38year's race when temperatures inside the cockpit allegedly reached upwards of 170 degrees Fahrenheit.
00:20:48I've never experienced anything like this in my life.
00:20:50It's just so incredibly hot in that car at the moment.
00:20:54And my right leg just cramped up, seized up.
00:20:58I couldn't do anything with it, so I just had to come in and change driver.
00:21:01It's just way too hot out there at the moment.
00:21:03And as a result of that, and many other examples, the ACO next year are trying to mandate air
00:21:14conditioning in closed cockpit cars.
00:21:16David, your thoughts?
00:21:17Well, it's going to be very, very difficult to achieve it correctly.
00:21:20Obviously, a street car, probably at the worst set case of, might have an ambient temperature
00:21:26inside of about 110, 120.
00:21:28You're going to try and cool down a car that's at about 170, which is full of holes and everything
00:21:33in the car is red hot.
00:21:35It's not insulated in any way, shape or form.
00:21:36The pedals get hot.
00:21:37The tunnel is red hot.
00:21:39The floor's hot.
00:21:40The steering wheel is hot.
00:21:41I don't think it's going to work.
00:21:43I think we're going to have to, you know, really concentrate more on keeping the driver
00:21:47cool with driver cooling equipment.
00:21:49The cool seat, the cool hat, you know, air into the, air into the helmet would be huge
00:21:53or get air somehow blowing up your trousers as the, as the song goes.
00:21:58And Dorsey, there is one car in this field this year, which is the Luc Alfont Adventures
00:22:02Corvette.
00:22:02He is running air conditioning.
00:22:04I guess it'll be interesting to, to judge from his race and how the performance, whether
00:22:08it's affected and those internal cockpit conditions, whether they have been improved.
00:22:14Well, there's a lot of different, a lot of different things that are being done by different
00:22:18teams.
00:22:19I've driven, obviously, in those cars most of my career in 150 degrees.
00:22:23You know, we wear cool suits with driver aids with helmets and so forth, all that being
00:22:27looked at.
00:22:27But the ACO is way out of bounds with what they want.
00:22:29They want to keep the temperature of the inside of the car under 38 Celsius.
00:22:33It'll never happen.
00:22:35Because you park your car out in the parking lot with the windows up in the summer, you'll
00:22:38probably hit 45 Celsius somewhere in there.
00:22:42And of course, Doug Fian, who's the general manager of the Corvette program, is working on
00:22:48some driver aids, which he's working with the ACO and the FIA to try and not change the
00:22:54rule, but, well, yeah, change the rule and have a more realistic way of approach of keeping
00:22:58the drivers cool, which have to be done.
00:23:01And, you know, the modern driver's suit, for instance, that clocks up about 30 degrees
00:23:05right there under the suit.
00:23:06Well, they're working on that, too.
00:23:08The people at SPARCO are trying to design a suit that breathes better, letting some of
00:23:12the air in and back out again to try to keep the body at the core temperature of the driver
00:23:17down.
00:23:18It's normal that your temperature of your body, 105 degrees in racing conditions, is what
00:23:23it is.
00:23:23I mean, that's a normal.
00:23:25But when you get really superheated, you know, I burn my hands.
00:23:28Once you get up about 106 or 107, then if your core temperature's up there, then you really
00:23:33have got danger.
00:23:34Your hands and feet can get very hot.
00:23:35You're right.
00:23:36And a lot of Nextel Cup drivers used to burn their feet on those hot floors, but...
00:23:41Then they've done that.
00:23:42Yeah, exactly.
00:23:44One driver used to driving closed cockpit cars is with Calvin Fish right now.
00:23:49Well, Tracy Groen is another one of the drivers here with the White Lightning team who are making
00:23:52the debut here at Lamar.
00:23:53How has the experience been for you thus far?
00:23:56So far, we've had nothing but great times, except perhaps the first practice session and
00:24:02second practice session at night in the rain.
00:24:04I could have done without that.
00:24:06But anyway, we learned a lot, know a lot more about the track now.
00:24:10Nick's out in the car now, so I should be in half an hour or so, really ready for it.
00:24:16Talk about those conditions on Wednesday evening.
00:24:18We saw some of the best in the business, Tracy, have major offs.
00:24:21How difficult was it to be driving out there with the teeming rain?
00:24:24Well, you know, when you hear guys like Andy Wallace and Max Pappas saying, you know, that
00:24:29was the scariest thing they've ever done, then you've got to believe that the voice of
00:24:34experience says, maybe we shouldn't have all been out there.
00:24:37Good luck the rest of the way.
00:24:38Enjoy the experience, Tracy.
00:24:40Thank you very much.
00:24:42And, of course, he is teamed with Jörg Bergmeister.
00:24:45And take a look at this graphic because these drivers that are here this weekend and the
00:24:50respective American championships that they're leading, and there is Jörg Bergmeister leading
00:24:55the Rolex sports car series Daytona prototype class.
00:24:59So it will be interesting to see how that chrome white lightning Porsche performs here this weekend.
00:25:04Well, Alan McNish, our leader, pitted the first time with the Audi on the 14th lap.
00:25:10That being said, in two laps, we can expect him again, and he's not going to sneak by me on this mileage issue.
00:25:16I want to see what they're up to.
00:25:17So, but if it follows suit, we would expect him in the next two laps.
00:25:21Lexus scoreboard shows you our positions as they scroll through overall, and that it still remains.
00:25:27The Yost Audi's, one and two, on board with the CompuAir Corvette.
00:25:34Passing one of the LMP2 cars.
00:25:35You see how much power that seven-liter Thunder Mountain motor does.
00:25:40The way it comes off those corners, just enormous grunt.
00:25:43You would expect the P2 car to probably repass at the other end of the straightaway.
00:25:51This is the class-leading LMP2 car, Chris.
00:25:54We'll get it back to Chris Neville in just a moment.
00:26:03Tommy Erdos has done a brilliant opening stint, and this is the class-defending car as well for RML.
00:26:11Change to the AER engine this year, though.
00:26:14It is a very strong combination of Tommy Erdos, Mike Newton, and former overall winner, Andy Wallace.
00:26:21Yes, but that AER engine is yet to make 24 hours in competition.
00:26:25It's done so on the dyno, but never in competition, not yet.
00:26:29Of course, it's pretty small, 1.9 liter.
00:26:32Call it 2 liter, turbocharged, four-cylinder.
00:26:35It has to do an awful lot of work to drag the car around here at speed.
00:26:40Traffic jam.
00:26:41That's the sort of thing that you can come unglued in when you're lapping a group of traffic like this.
00:26:49They're all watching each other.
00:26:51They're concentrating on the guy there trying to pass, and you can come sneaking up behind them.
00:26:56And I notice that these LMP1 drivers are pretty loathe to give anybody any room.
00:27:01They come rushing through, which always looks a bit brave to me, especially when you're doing the 24-hour race.
00:27:06Warren Hughes here for Chamberlain Synergy in the 39 on the left of screen, doing a good job.
00:27:12And he's had a bit of a musical chairs lead up to this year's 24.
00:27:15He was part of that successful trio of the RML team that we saw last year win P2.
00:27:22But he had a ride, then got shuffled out.
00:27:25It looked like he was going to be in the Panos LNT car, then got shuffled out of that.
00:27:29And after the 39, Chamberlain Synergy car was crashed heavily at the test day, and that driver was unable to continue.
00:27:38Warren Hughes was then drafted into that team.
00:27:40The 007 is serviced and gone as we continue the Michelin 24 hours of Le Mans.
00:27:49It is an Audi-Pescarolo battle up front.
00:27:53Stick with us.
00:27:53In addition to the test day and, of course, the race, there are a couple of other things well worth seeing during this festival of Le Mans.
00:28:19And one is scrutineering, the other is this, the Drivers' Parade on Friday.
00:28:24It's a day off, so to speak, at the track, and the drivers and teams head to the town.
00:28:28And just look at the amount of people that turn out to support the drivers in the town square.
00:28:32It's a wonderful atmosphere.
00:28:34And we've done our best to sample as much of the food and drink here as we can in Le Mans.
00:28:39And it's been a wonderful atmosphere all week long.
00:28:42Welcome back to Speed's continual live coverage of the Michelin 24 hours of Le Mans.
00:28:47And this is your race leader, Alan McNish.
00:28:49He has a 30-second lead over Frank Bieler, the sister R10 Audi.
00:28:54And so far, so good.
00:28:56He's cutting his way through the traffic.
00:28:58No problems today.
00:28:59Now, the little Scotsman has really been legging it down the road today.
00:29:02There's no doubt about it.
00:29:03He's kept up the pressure.
00:29:04He's kept up some very good laps.
00:29:06I told you about the lap time just dipped a little bit.
00:29:09But he seems to be back right on form now.
00:29:11His last lap was only two-tenths slower than his best lap of the day.
00:29:15And they're nearly ten seconds a lap faster than the best Garola of Collard back in third spot.
00:29:23Well, he stopped the first time on lap 14.
00:29:25But remember, there was some caution laps.
00:29:27There was a couple laps of caution that he was under.
00:29:30He's already passed 14 laps now under green.
00:29:32This will be, if he does fit this lap, 15 laps on a tank of fuel.
00:29:37It's been green the entire time.
00:29:38I was talking with Alan the other day, and he said, Le Mans really is the natural home for this R10.
00:29:45You got to drive the R8 yourself as we take a look at a super slow-mo.
00:29:49And I said, what's different about it when you first drive it?
00:29:52And he said, well, there are many things.
00:29:53He said, you know, the low noise for a starter.
00:29:56And he said, the torque is amazing.
00:29:58He said, but there's significant aero differences on this car as well.
00:30:01Can you go into details on that, Doris?
00:30:03What do you think?
00:30:04I know you haven't driven the R10, but what do you think it might be like?
00:30:06Well, they certainly have improved on aero, and they would have because they had such good years,
00:30:09six good years with the R8.
00:30:11I'm sure this makes more downforce.
00:30:13It's a bit heavier at the back end because of that diesel engine.
00:30:17The torque is a major issue.
00:30:18No question about that.
00:30:19800 foot-pounds of torque, and this car running without traction control.
00:30:23They have a form of traction control for it, but they haven't refined it,
00:30:27and the drivers have been told not to use it unless it were in the rain or something like that.
00:30:31So it's a handful of a car.
00:30:32We've seen them spin the car a couple, several times at Sebring.
00:30:37Definitely that much power, it can cut you out.
00:30:41Well, of course, it's got the V12 engine, which is longer than their old engine,
00:30:44so the whole car is longer, which obviously changes the aerodynamic package.
00:30:47The end of sport.
00:30:48Lola is in.
00:30:49This is Duncan Dayton.
00:30:52And away.
00:30:53They're languishing some way down the field.
00:30:55They've had a fairly checkered start at the beginning of this race, unfortunately,
00:30:58and they're still down in 45th spot.
00:31:02You're going to see a lot of pit stops now, and here comes the Audi.
00:31:05Race leader is in.
00:31:07Right on schedule.
00:31:10That's 15 laps under green.
00:31:12That is scary for the Pescarola people.
00:31:17Now, there should be a driver change coming up.
00:31:19McNish is preparing himself to launch out of the cockpit.
00:31:26These guys are so slick at this.
00:31:29This is pretty to watch.
00:31:30Look at how quickly he's out of there.
00:31:32Capello is ready to step in, and McNish is out of the cockpit already.
00:31:36Great teamwork here as well.
00:31:38Now, the drivers are allowed to help each other.
00:31:44You can only have the fuelers working on the car, and the drivers can help each other.
00:31:48And, of course, the brake and tire specialists.
00:31:52Cal.
00:31:53Well, certainly now the door has been opened in terms of what mileage they're getting.
00:31:57That's a 15-lbs stint there for McNish.
00:31:59He plugs Dindo Capello in, and they're going to be changing tires.
00:32:02So that's a double stint on these Michelins.
00:32:04It's basically in the heat of the day, as Brian mentioned earlier, over 90 degrees ambient right now.
00:32:09So extremely hot conditions.
00:32:11And right behind the set machine, the eight car is in.
00:32:13Vila turning it over to our defending champion here, Marco Verna.
00:32:16So Dindo Capello, he searches for his third victory here at Le Mans.
00:32:20And right now, Marco Verna in the eight car is looking for his second.
00:32:23And Frank's won three of these, so a lot of experience on this squad.
00:32:27In fact, this driving trio have had 15 podiums from the 20 starts that they've had here.
00:32:31So a lot of experience in this number eight machine.
00:32:35The differential on this car was also changed after the morning warm-up.
00:32:38So they saw the problem on the seventh car and said,
00:32:40We may have the same problem over on the sister cars, but that was really precautionary.
00:32:44Great start by the Yost team.
00:32:46Marco Verna underway.
00:32:48And in that opening stint, Frank Biela has set the fastest time of the race thus far
00:32:52at a 3 minute 32 second, 0.691.
00:32:56So the German has done a good job from one German to another.
00:32:59Verna is on board.
00:33:01And, of course, that marvellous victory for Marco.
00:33:06It was great to see him finally get a Le Mans victory.
00:33:10And he's in search of his second.
00:33:13David, what's it like when you begin your first stint of the race in Marco's shoes right now?
00:33:18Well, of course, hey, there's a huge responsibility on his shoulders
00:33:20because the other guys just successfully got to some of the hairiest parts of the race,
00:33:24which is the start when people tend to duke it out and everybody wants to win on the first corner.
00:33:28How long does it take you to get up to your rhythm, though?
00:33:30It doesn't take long.
00:33:31These guys have done so much testing and so much practice in these cars
00:33:34that it doesn't take them long.
00:33:36The tyres aren't officially heated, but they are warmed before they go on the car.
00:33:40So you just take your lap to settle in.
00:33:42And then on a nice evening like tonight, he's in for a nice two-hour drive.
00:33:47The first accomplishment you've got to do is get out of pit lane without spinning the tyres
00:33:50or you get a three-second penalty.
00:33:52It's a dumb rule that they got.
00:33:54And anyway, I talked to Alan McNish and he said,
00:33:56you try coming out with 800 foot-pounds of torque and not spinning the tyres.
00:34:00It's not that easy.
00:34:01Not spinning the tyres or stalling it.
00:34:02Or stalling.
00:34:03That's what he said.
00:34:03Stalling it is a major issue.
00:34:07These cars, these R10s, are equipped with traction control,
00:34:10but they are choosing not to use it here at the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
00:34:14Too much shock on the drive line is what I'm hearing.
00:34:19You know, it's just too abrupt and it will break other things.
00:34:22So they'd rather not even mess with it.
00:34:23It's not refined as much as maybe they might like to see.
00:34:26Obviously, any time you start your stint,
00:34:30the key thing you've got to have is information from the previous driver
00:34:33to tell you what the track situation is like.
00:34:36All right, let's get it down to Calvin with Alan McNish.
00:34:39Alan, great opening stint there.
00:34:40How is the race car during the opening stint before the first fuel stop?
00:34:44Frankie went by.
00:34:45Any problems with the car?
00:34:46No, none at all.
00:34:46I just got caught in traffic in the middle of Indianapolis.
00:34:49And Frankie, I saw, was on my right side,
00:34:52but I didn't know whether he was down the inside or not.
00:34:54So I just gave enough room that two cars could fit round.
00:34:57That allowed him to get the power down and come out
00:34:59because I was on the dirty side.
00:35:01But then once we got into the second stint,
00:35:03the car got better and came towards us
00:35:05and I was able to sort of get the foot down a bit.
00:35:07What were you feeling in this morning's warm-up
00:35:09where the car had to come back to the garage
00:35:10and have some things fixed?
00:35:11What were you feeling from the driver's cockpit?
00:35:14Obviously, the warm-up's the last chance
00:35:16you've got to verify the car before the race.
00:35:18And so I think for everybody,
00:35:20it was a little bit of a nervous moment.
00:35:21But saying that, we had that in Sebring
00:35:24and we came back from that one.
00:35:25So I knew we should be okay.
00:35:27Been a few years since you've won this.
00:35:28Is it great to be on the squad with Tom finally?
00:35:31Yeah, well, with Indotom and I,
00:35:32I think we've got one squad that's got one goal,
00:35:35and that's the win.
00:35:36No egos, no reason to try and prove anything,
00:35:38just the win.
00:35:39All right, mate, good luck.
00:35:41There he is, Alan McNish.
00:35:42First part of his 24-hour job is done.
00:35:46A very successful start as he hands over
00:35:48to Dindo Capello,
00:35:50and Biela hands over to Marco Werner.
00:35:53The Audi sports squad are looking strong.
00:35:58Time to leave Circuit de la Salle
00:36:00just for a moment,
00:36:01and we leave you with the top three
00:36:02at our respective classes.
00:36:18Reminding you about NASCAR race day
00:36:20tomorrow at 11.30 a.m. Eastern live
00:36:23right here on Speed.
00:36:25It's the definitive free-race show.
00:36:26It returns to set the grid
00:36:28and latch your window notes.
00:36:29So get fired up for race day
00:36:30with NASCAR race day
00:36:32built by the Home Depot.
00:36:33That's tomorrow at 11.30 a.m. Eastern
00:36:35right here on Speed.
00:36:36Back at Le Mans.
00:36:37And...
00:36:42Coming out of Ted Russo
00:36:45to the straight,
00:36:46those trees on the left,
00:36:47which are pretty big now,
00:36:48big popular trees.
00:36:50When I first raced here,
00:36:51they were younger trees,
00:36:52and they were just painted white.
00:36:53That's all you have.
00:36:54No guard wear.
00:36:55They just painted the bottom of the trees white
00:36:56so you could see them in the night.
00:36:58They led to straw bail on them.
00:36:59I must admit that.
00:37:00I think I'd rather not see them at all.
00:37:02That's the case.
00:37:03That's true, yeah.
00:37:06Here's the first of the chicane.
00:37:07You can hear that deep rumble
00:37:09from the Corvette.
00:37:13Got a little loose
00:37:14as it came off there.
00:37:15Yeah.
00:37:16Wagged the tail.
00:37:18Well, maybe that torque
00:37:19and the heat of the day
00:37:20is having an effect on the Corvette
00:37:23because Johnny O'Connell said,
00:37:24you know,
00:37:25that he felt the rear end
00:37:26was going away just a little bit
00:37:27as he had that spin earlier on,
00:37:30which is obviously not
00:37:31double-stilling his tires at that stage.
00:37:33When the Corvette team
00:37:34left the test day a couple of weeks back,
00:37:36they said it was the best
00:37:37one they have ever had.
00:37:40Would quite often leave Le Mans
00:37:41with a few niggly problems
00:37:43and scratching their heads
00:37:44and with quite a healthy to-do list
00:37:46before coming back
00:37:47for the race meeting.
00:37:49But they said
00:37:50this was such a successful test
00:37:51and everyone was quite high
00:37:53in spirits.
00:37:54As we continue to ride
00:37:55with Max Pappas,
00:37:56it hasn't been the best start
00:37:57for the 63.
00:37:58The sister car,
00:37:59the 64 of Olivier Beretta,
00:38:02Oliver Gavin
00:38:03and Jan Magnussen
00:38:04still leads
00:38:04the GT1 class.
00:38:07Speaking of the GT cars,
00:38:09let's talk GT2 for a moment
00:38:10because we're rather a P2
00:38:12because we would like
00:38:13to say hello
00:38:14to Liz Halliday,
00:38:15the one and only
00:38:16female competitor
00:38:17in the race
00:38:18and regular
00:38:18in the American Le Mans series.
00:38:20Hi, Liz Lee Diffie with you.
00:38:21Hi, how are you doing?
00:38:22Good.
00:38:22Tell us about the start
00:38:23because it was an eventful one
00:38:24and it seemed as though
00:38:25those electrical issues continued.
00:38:27Yeah, basically by about
00:38:28the second lap
00:38:29we started having a misfire
00:38:30that we couldn't seem
00:38:31to figure out
00:38:32and, you know,
00:38:33tried everything,
00:38:34plugs and coils.
00:38:35Ultimately,
00:38:36it turns out
00:38:37that the engine
00:38:37was overboosting
00:38:38and it was a wastegate problem.
00:38:40So boys worked really hard
00:38:41and seemed to have put it right.
00:38:43Felt a little slow to me still
00:38:44but I think so far,
00:38:46touch wood,
00:38:46everything's going well now.
00:38:47I saw you in the paddock
00:38:49probably about an hour
00:38:50before the race start.
00:38:51You were a little bit nervous
00:38:52because that's the first time
00:38:53you've started here at Le Mans.
00:38:54How was it?
00:38:55Yeah, it was pretty cool.
00:38:56I mean,
00:38:56I just tried to play things safe
00:38:58at the start.
00:38:59I wasn't going to get in any trouble.
00:39:00Obviously,
00:39:01by about the second lap
00:39:02I was having trouble already
00:39:03so unfortunately
00:39:03that's, you know,
00:39:05short-lived
00:39:05but, you know,
00:39:06still really awesome
00:39:07to take that start
00:39:08and be in front of everybody
00:39:09and for my team.
00:39:10Well, not only are you good
00:39:12at motorsport,
00:39:12you're also an accomplished equestrian.
00:39:15Tell us a little about
00:39:15your efforts
00:39:17with the equestrian side of things
00:39:19because it's an interesting mix
00:39:21that you have going.
00:39:22Yeah,
00:39:23I'm also a three-day event rider.
00:39:25Oh,
00:39:26there we go.
00:39:26Nice.
00:39:28Well done,
00:39:29boys.
00:39:29My horses are famous now.
00:39:32Oh my goodness.
00:39:33Well,
00:39:33she had the front wheels
00:39:34on the road
00:39:35and the horse.
00:39:36Very nice.
00:39:39Well,
00:39:40how do you get those horses
00:39:41not to bite you?
00:39:42They always want to bite me.
00:39:43Well,
00:39:43that one you've seen
00:39:44in the pictures,
00:39:44he can be a bit grizzly at times
00:39:46but as long as you give him
00:39:47lots of treats,
00:39:48he's pretty happy.
00:39:49Now,
00:39:49you've got an event coming up,
00:39:50haven't you,
00:39:51shortly?
00:39:51I do.
00:39:52I've got an event next Saturday
00:39:53with two of my horses
00:39:55so I'm going to be
00:39:57straight back home
00:39:58and straight back on the horses.
00:39:59Well,
00:40:00listen,
00:40:00we wish you the best of luck
00:40:01for the rest of the race.
00:40:02I'm sure it's not the last time
00:40:03that we will talk to you
00:40:04throughout the 24 hours.
00:40:05Go and enjoy a short rest
00:40:07and we'll talk to you soon.
00:40:07Great,
00:40:08thanks a lot.
00:40:08Liz Halliday there
00:40:09from the Intersport Racing Team
00:40:11and they will continue
00:40:12to power on.
00:40:13That's a strong car,
00:40:14strong car and engine combination
00:40:15and that particular team
00:40:17had a 20 lap lead last year
00:40:21only to suffer a few
00:40:22mechanical problems
00:40:24that took them out
00:40:25and here's an overview
00:40:26of the American teams
00:40:27here at Le Mans this year.
00:40:29We are very well represented.
00:40:38There you see the 63 car
00:40:43of Corvette
00:40:44with Max Pappas at the wheel.
00:40:45It's down in 37th spot
00:40:47after that long lazy spin.
00:40:50See the damage
00:40:51of the bodywork at the back.
00:40:53They didn't even repair that
00:40:54but unfortunately
00:40:55they did say
00:40:56they put a tow link on
00:40:57so it did hit the suspension.
00:40:5916 is back in
00:41:00and Emmanuel Collard
00:41:01out of the car.
00:41:04It's been a fairly smooth run
00:41:06thus far
00:41:06for the Pescarolo 16.
00:41:18This looks to me
00:41:19to be Eric Comas
00:41:20climbing on board.
00:41:22And the big news
00:41:23with this team
00:41:24I'm sure the boys
00:41:25mentioned a little earlier
00:41:26was Jean-Christophe
00:41:27Bouillon
00:41:28who was meant to start
00:41:30fell over at home
00:41:31I think he was putting
00:41:33some curtain rods up
00:41:34or something like that
00:41:34broke his wrist
00:41:35and the team
00:41:39and he stalled it
00:41:39finally gets going.
00:41:41The team tried
00:41:42Christophe Boucheau
00:41:43former Le Mans winner
00:41:44and they said
00:41:45that he wasn't up
00:41:46to doing the quick times
00:41:47and they drafted in
00:41:49fellow French driver
00:41:50Nicolas Manassion
00:41:51from the Creation
00:41:52Auto Sportif team
00:41:55very late in the piece.
00:41:57the 7 of Dindo Capello
00:42:01has an 18-second lead
00:42:02over the sister Audi.
00:42:04We'll be back.
00:42:13You're watching the Michelin
00:42:1524 hours of Le Mans
00:42:17and this is the 8
00:42:20for Joost Audi
00:42:21of Marco Werner
00:42:23former American Le Mans
00:42:26series champion
00:42:27chasing the sister car
00:42:29there's only a deficit
00:42:30of just under 17 seconds.
00:42:35As we take a look
00:42:36at a Valvoline race reset.
00:42:38Here are your
00:42:39respective class leaders
00:42:41the Portuguese driver
00:42:42Miguel Amaral
00:42:44leading the P2 class.
00:42:46It is the Corvette
00:42:47the one that is going
00:42:49for three consecutive
00:42:50class victories
00:42:51leads the way
00:42:52in the Scuderia
00:42:53across Ferrari
00:42:544.30
00:42:55of Andrew Kirkcalde
00:42:57who leads
00:42:58the GT2 class.
00:42:59So that's how
00:43:05things stand
00:43:05at the moment
00:43:06and it's been
00:43:08a fairly interesting
00:43:09first two hours
00:43:11of the Michelin
00:43:1224 hours of Le Mans
00:43:13it is still very much
00:43:14the battle between
00:43:15Audi and Pescarolo
00:43:16up front
00:43:17and speaking of
00:43:18Pescarolo
00:43:18here is the 16
00:43:19Eric Comas
00:43:20has just taken over
00:43:21from Manu Collard
00:43:25who we know
00:43:25so well in America
00:43:26from both
00:43:27the American Le Mans
00:43:28series and the
00:43:29Rolex sports car
00:43:29series has done
00:43:31a lot of racing
00:43:32in the US
00:43:34has been a class
00:43:37winner here at
00:43:37Le Mans
00:43:38but is in search
00:43:39of his first
00:43:40overall victory.
00:43:46Following the
00:43:47number nine car
00:43:48the Courage
00:43:49down in the
00:43:50number nine car
00:43:52I'm in the
00:43:58five car
00:43:59that's running
00:43:59that's running
00:44:00in ninth.
00:44:02We knew what
00:44:02you meant.
00:44:03Yeah, you know
00:44:04what I was
00:44:04trying to say.
00:44:05Harold Premat
00:44:05behind the wheel
00:44:07of that Swiss
00:44:08spirit Courage
00:44:09and they're doing
00:44:09a pretty good job
00:44:10actually to be
00:44:11in the top ten
00:44:11at this early
00:44:12stage.
00:44:14The Pescarolo
00:44:14so far has
00:44:15not been able
00:44:16to match
00:44:17fuel mileage
00:44:18with the Audi
00:44:18which we knew
00:44:19that wouldn't
00:44:19be the case
00:44:19but it's two
00:44:20laps different
00:44:21stopping those
00:44:23Pescarolos
00:44:24about every
00:44:2413 laps
00:44:25and of course
00:44:26Alan McNish
00:44:26went 15
00:44:27last time
00:44:28around.
00:44:29Two times
00:44:30World Rally
00:44:31Champion
00:44:31Sebastian Loeb
00:44:32suiting up.
00:44:35Crowd will go
00:44:35crazy over this
00:44:36one won't they?
00:44:36Oh absolutely.
00:44:37This guy has
00:44:38created such a
00:44:39stir here
00:44:40and it was the
00:44:40same situation
00:44:41last year as
00:44:42well.
00:44:42Just so much
00:44:43interest in him
00:44:44and we're very
00:44:45fortunate here
00:44:46at Le Mans
00:44:46this year to
00:44:47have a current
00:44:48World Rally
00:44:49Champion
00:44:49driver and a
00:44:51current Formula
00:44:52One driver
00:44:52not only in
00:44:53the same race
00:44:54they're in
00:44:55the same car.
00:44:57And it's
00:44:58French.
00:44:58And they both
00:44:59happen to be
00:44:59French.
00:45:00And he is
00:45:00about to take
00:45:01over from
00:45:02Frank Montagne.
00:45:09Kit Lane
00:45:10and Chris Neville
00:45:10Hi Chris.
00:45:12Lee while we
00:45:13were away on
00:45:13that last
00:45:13commercial of
00:45:14the 009 did
00:45:15come in and
00:45:15Pedro Lamy
00:45:16handed it over
00:45:16to Stefan
00:45:17Serrazin.
00:45:18Pedro you just
00:45:19did a double
00:45:19stint last
00:45:20year.
00:45:20I know it's
00:45:21very difficult
00:45:21for the team
00:45:22to do double
00:45:23stints.
00:45:24Today's another
00:45:24warm day but
00:45:25this year you
00:45:25look a little
00:45:26bit fresher.
00:45:27Yeah it looks
00:45:28like that we
00:45:29can survive
00:45:29with double
00:45:30stints with
00:45:30the same
00:45:31tires so we
00:45:32will try to
00:45:33do a race.
00:45:35I mean now
00:45:35it's hot.
00:45:36I think when
00:45:37we're going to
00:45:38be cooler it
00:45:38will be better
00:45:39for us we
00:45:39will see.
00:45:40You were
00:45:40chasing down
00:45:41the Corvette
00:45:42number 64
00:45:42there.
00:45:43Can you guys
00:45:43run pace with
00:45:45them?
00:45:45Were you
00:45:45expecting this
00:45:46pace?
00:45:47Well we
00:45:47changed the
00:45:48tires different
00:45:49timing but we
00:45:50didn't expect
00:45:50that they were
00:45:51so fast after
00:45:52qualifying.
00:45:53We had a
00:45:54feeling because
00:45:54we thought that
00:45:56they had something
00:45:57on their focus
00:45:58and they have.
00:46:00All year long
00:46:01over in America
00:46:01you've been
00:46:03running the
00:46:03Pirelli tires.
00:46:04You come back
00:46:05over here you're
00:46:05running the
00:46:06Michelins.
00:46:06Has it been a
00:46:06difficult transition
00:46:07for the team?
00:46:09Well we raced
00:46:09here last year
00:46:10with Michelin so
00:46:11I think the
00:46:14Michelin has more
00:46:15experience in this
00:46:16circuit and that's
00:46:18why it was the
00:46:19team option.
00:46:20Good luck.
00:46:22Pedro Lamy he
00:46:23has raced some
00:46:23beautiful machinery
00:46:24here at Le Mans
00:46:25over the years
00:46:26as we bring you up
00:46:27today with the
00:46:28highlights of the
00:46:29first two hours
00:46:30it was Alan
00:46:31McNish that took
00:46:31the tricolor and
00:46:33led the field up
00:46:34the main straight.
00:46:35Jan Lamy was
00:46:35quick to pounce
00:46:36on Jean-Marc
00:46:38Gunon and make
00:46:39his impact there
00:46:41and speaking of
00:46:41impact what about
00:46:42this Fabio
00:46:43Babini in the
00:46:44BMS Scuderia
00:46:45Aston and then
00:46:46to the works Aston
00:46:47Darren Turner was
00:46:48on board the
00:46:48007 and a severe
00:46:50oil leak put them
00:46:51into the garage
00:46:52very early at the
00:46:5345 minute mark
00:46:54Frank Bieler took
00:46:55advantage of Alan
00:46:56McNish getting
00:46:56caught in the
00:46:57traffic and whipped
00:46:57off by early
00:46:58that was a neat
00:46:59move and then
00:47:00the 20 Pierre
00:47:01Bruno Pilbeam
00:47:02almost took Frank
00:47:03Bieler out as he
00:47:04split the two
00:47:05Audis.
00:47:09Take a look at
00:47:10the second hour
00:47:11you're on board
00:47:12with Johnny O'Connor
00:47:12watch and listen
00:47:13that was not
00:47:19expected
00:47:20got a little
00:47:21tailey
00:47:22and Johnny
00:47:24was left
00:47:24to lift back
00:47:25to pit lane
00:47:26and there was
00:47:27a little bit
00:47:27of damage
00:47:28on the rear
00:47:28end of that
00:47:29car
00:47:29and the Corvette
00:47:30boys were able
00:47:31to get that
00:47:32fixed
00:47:32so good work
00:47:34from those guys
00:47:35as it's just
00:47:35a little after
00:47:367pm local
00:47:38time
00:47:38here at
00:47:39Circuit
00:47:39de la
00:47:39Saft
00:47:40as we take
00:47:41you to
00:47:41the class
00:47:42leaders
00:47:43in our
00:47:43respective
00:47:44classes
00:47:44the two

00:47:45classes
00:47:46the two
00:47:46GT
00:47:47classes
00:47:47that's how
00:47:48it stands
00:47:49at the moment
00:47:50as we flip
00:47:51over and show
00:47:52you the top
00:47:53three in each
00:47:53of our GT
00:47:54classes at the

00:47:55are the boys
00:47:56that are going
00:47:56for three
00:47:57straight
00:47:58they are in
00:47:59good shape
00:47:59and it is
00:48:00that Scuderia
00:48:01across Ferrari
00:48:02that leads
00:48:03the way

00:48:05Lightning
00:48:05Krone
00:48:06Porsche
00:48:06as we see

00:48:14boys
00:48:15I don't know
00:48:15if you've
00:48:15spoken about
00:48:16this already
00:48:16but it will
00:48:17definitely
00:48:17be France
00:48:18against Germany
00:48:19again
00:48:20and it will
00:48:20certainly
00:48:21be a French
00:48:22manufacturer
00:48:22against the
00:48:23Audi
00:48:23because
00:48:24massive news
00:48:24this week
00:48:25that Peugeot
00:48:25if you haven't
00:48:26heard
00:48:27are coming
00:48:27with an
00:48:28HDI
00:48:29diesel
00:48:29next year
00:48:30now David
00:48:31this is going
00:48:31to be a
00:48:32coupe
00:48:32they're going
00:48:33to have a
00:48:33100 degree
00:48:3412 cylinder
00:48:355.5 litre
00:48:36engine
00:48:36and we've got
00:48:37problems here
00:48:38for the
00:48:38Lister
00:48:38and they
00:48:39are going
00:48:40to go
00:48:40head
00:48:40to head
00:48:40with the
00:48:41diesel
00:48:41prototype
00:48:42with Audi
00:48:43next year
00:48:43that will
00:48:44be fascinating
00:48:44they're talking
00:48:45about 650
00:48:46horsepower
00:48:47out of that
00:48:48plus
00:48:48nearly a
00:48:49thousand
00:48:49pounds
00:48:50feet
00:48:50of torque
00:48:51100 degree
00:48:52angle
00:48:52on the
00:48:52cylinders
00:48:53is to get
00:48:54the weight
00:48:54of the
00:48:55engine
00:48:55low
00:48:55and that's
00:48:56going to be
00:48:57a big
00:48:57effort
00:48:58by Peugeot
00:48:58next year
00:48:59so if Audi
00:49:00are still
00:49:00around
00:49:01it's going
00:49:01to be
00:49:01a massive
00:49:02battle
00:49:02Beretta
00:49:03is in
00:49:04pitlane
00:49:04Calvin's
00:49:04there
00:49:05he's going

00:49:08still a
00:49:09little
00:49:09warm

00:49:11they've

00:49:12the guns
00:49:12at
00:49:12the
00:49:12ready
00:49:12so once
00:49:13the refueling
00:49:13is complete
00:49:14Lembier will
00:49:15do a
00:49:15double
00:49:15stint
00:49:15the tires
00:49:16are only
00:49:16doing
00:49:16a single
00:49:17once the
00:49:18temperature
00:49:18cools down
00:49:19a little
00:49:19bit
00:49:19I think
00:49:19we'll
00:49:20see
00:49:20some
00:49:20of these
00:49:20GT1
00:49:21teams
00:49:21and GT2
00:49:22teams
00:49:23attempt to

00:49:28Andrew
00:49:29Manu
00:49:34the pace

00:49:35hot
00:49:35the pace
00:49:36was very
00:49:36hot
00:49:36indeed
00:49:37yes
00:49:38we start
00:49:38really
00:49:39quick
00:49:39but
00:49:40unfortunately
00:49:41we are
00:49:42a bit
00:49:43slower
00:49:43at the
00:49:44moment
00:49:44but
00:49:46we have
00:49:46still
00:49:47to push
00:49:48until
00:49:48the end
00:49:49and
00:49:49just
00:49:49to see
00:49:49if we can
00:49:50do something
00:49:53it seems
00:49:53to be
00:49:54quite
00:49:54difficult
00:49:54at the
00:49:55moment
00:49:55because
00:49:55they
00:49:55can
00:49:55do
00:49:56two
00:49:56more
00:49:56laps
