00:00Three of these boxes will break the $5,500 bank.
00:12Is this one of them?
00:14Or is it this one?
00:15Or this one?
00:16We'll find out in a moment in this game of hide-and-seek
00:19as these nine celebrities...
00:22Hanson Williams, Lee Merriweather, Liz Torres, Alex Karras,
00:31Jan Murray, Jean-Lay Dubois, Denby Duncan, Tom Bosley,
00:40and Pat McCormick all join us in playing Break the Bank!
00:46Now, we'll meet our host, Tom Kennedy!
00:53Good to have you with us.
01:02You folks in our studio audience and you folks at home,
01:04welcome to Break the Bank.
01:05You'll find our game simple, fun to play.
01:07You've met our celebrities, and now let's meet our contestants.
01:10Johnny Jacobs, would you please?
01:12I'd be happy to, Tom.
01:13First, we have our current champion,
01:16whose winnings totaled more than $7,500, Fred Wallen!
01:24And his opponent, a freelance illustrator,
01:26whose hobby is metal sculpture, Dixie Whatley!
01:31Dixie Whatley is with us.
01:32Hi, Dixie.
01:33How are you?
01:34How are you?
01:35Fred, how are you feeling today?
01:36Tough night's sleep.
01:37Tough night's sleep, huh?
01:39All right.
01:39Here's how we play Break the Bank.
01:41Our game board has varied denominations of money in groups of three.
01:45There are also money bags scattered here and there.
01:47Here is what a typical board might look like.
01:50The three $100 boxes touching each other along one of the sides.
01:55The three $200 boxes, each touching each other.
01:59And the three $300 boxes, and again, they touch each other.
02:04The five money bags are scattered all over.
02:07And a wild box, which can be located anywhere and be used for any value.
02:12The remaining boxes are blank.
02:14They have no value, but they do not touch each other along any of the sides.
02:17Get three of the same and you win.
02:19Get three money bags and you break our bank, which is at $5,500.
02:23We'll see if it's broken after this.
02:30And now let us begin.
02:33We've returned our boxes to their original positions and, of course, changed them around.
02:36Remember, for every question used, you will hear a true answer from one celebrity and a false one from the other.
02:42And the first player to get three of the same money boxes wins.
02:45All right, Dixie Watley, current challenger, would you start us off?
02:49Pick a box.
02:49I'll take number 20.
02:50Number 20, she says, lower right-hand corner.
02:52Could we see box number 20?
02:55And there it is, a money bag.
02:56Now, you know, of course, the rules of the game.
03:00Now, you can keep this money without having to answer a question, but you lose your turn.
03:04Or you can refuse to take the money bag and then keep on playing.
03:06So do you want to keep it and try to get three money bags and break the bank, which is at $5,500?
03:12Or do you want to return it to its neutral position and keep playing?
03:15I think I'll return it and keep on playing.
03:17All right.
03:17That's whatever you say.
03:19It goes to its neutral position.
03:20Pick another box, Dixie.
03:21Number 16, please.
03:21Number 16.
03:23Could we see box number 16, please?
03:25It is a money bag.
03:27Ho, ho, ho.
03:30There you go.
03:31Now, Dixie, what do you want to do?
03:34You can keep it and forfeit your turn, or you can pass it up and keep playing.
03:39I think I'll pass it up again.
03:40She's going to pass it up again.
03:42There's two money bags, all right?
03:44You know, Tom, if she gets the third money bag, suddenly she becomes as old as I am.
03:50That's right.
03:51Yes.
03:52Shangri-La time.
03:53All right, Dixie.
03:54Pick a box.
03:55Number one, please.
03:56Let's see box number one.
03:58What is there?
03:59Oh, okay.
04:01And now, Fred Wallen, we're over to you.
04:03Lucky number two.
04:05Lucky number two.
04:06Could we see box number two?
04:08And there is a $200 box, and that is connected to Liz Coruscant, Lee Merriweather.
04:12Liz, what do you call a dog who brings back a duck to his master instead of eating it himself?
04:17A dum-o.
04:18I know a lot about dogs because I went out with a lot of guys, and I went out with a guy
04:24that was such a dog, he used to ride in a car with his head out the window.
04:28And the answer to that question is a dog, a retriever.
04:32I see.
04:33Lee?
04:34Whatever you say.
04:35Lee?
04:36A dog who has just eaten.
04:39No, I said a Dalmatian.
04:40A what?
04:41Dalmatian.
04:42A Dalmatian.
04:43A Dalmatian.
04:44All right.
04:45Is it a retriever, Fred, or a Dalmatian for that $200 box?
04:47Sounds like a retriever.
04:48That's exactly what it is.
04:49A retriever.
04:50And you have a $200 box, and that's for the girls.
04:52Number six.
04:53He wants box number six.
04:57Could we see box number six?
04:59And did he find it?
05:00He found there, uh-oh, he found a money bag.
05:03Not a lot.
05:04Interesting development.
05:05Now, you know your choices, don't you?
05:07You have an option of two things.
05:09Keep the money bag, forfeit your turn, hope to get three of them, break the bank, or pass
05:14it up and keep playing.
05:15I'm going to take that money bag.
05:18He's going to take the money bag.
05:19You now have one money bag, two more and you break the bank, and now we're over to Dixie
05:23Watley.
05:24Huh.
05:25I'll take 13, please.
05:28Number 13.
05:29She's not interested in blocking.
05:31Could we see box number 13?
05:33There's a $300 box that is connected to Jan Murray and to Janet Dubois.
05:38Jan.
05:39In Macbeth.
05:40In what?
05:41In Macbeth.
05:42Oh, Macbeth.
05:43Yes.
05:44Shakespeare described something absolutely essential to life as being the chief nourisher in life's
05:49feast.
05:50What was he describing?
05:52Chopped liver.
05:53That's the only thing.
05:54Othello to cater it?
05:55No.
05:56He was describing, Shakespeare was describing, of course, marriage.
05:59Marriage.
06:00Jeanne Dubois.
06:01Absolutely wrong.
06:02He was describing my husband after dinner.
06:03Sleep.
06:04All right.
06:05Was it marriage or was it sleep?
06:06Dixie Watley for the $300 box.
06:07I'll say marriage.
06:08Wrong.
06:09Sleep was the answer.
06:10The box returns to his neutral position and we're back now to Fred Wallen.
06:11Number 16.
06:12Number 16.
06:13He knows that is a money bag.
06:14Can we see box number 16?
06:15And what do you want to do with it?
06:16He wants to keep it.
06:17He wants to keep it.
06:18He now has two money bags.
06:19If he gets the third one, he will have broken the bank for $5,500.
06:22Dixie.
06:23I'll take 20.
06:24She was going to go for 20.
06:25Another money bag and blocks.
06:26Could we see box number 20?
06:27Now it's up to you.
06:28What do you want to do, Dixie?
06:29I'm keeping it.
06:30She's going to keep that one.
06:31We'll put lips on that one.
06:32That means that belongs to her.
06:33And then we're back now to Fred Wallen.
06:34And then we're back now to Fred Wallen.
06:35Number 16.
06:36Number 16.
06:37He knows that is a money bag.
06:38Could we see box number 16?
06:39And what do you want to do with it?
06:40He wants to keep it.
06:41He now has two money bags.
06:42If he gets the third one, he will have broken the bank for $5,500.
06:44Dixie.
06:45I'll take 20.
06:46Box number 20.
06:47Now it's up to you.
06:48What do you want to do, Dixie?
06:49I'm keeping it.
06:50She's going to keep that one.
06:51We'll put lips on that one.
06:52That means that belongs to her.
06:53The other two belong to Fred.
06:54And we're back now to Fred.
06:56I'm going to gamble.
06:57Number 9.
06:58Number 9.
06:59Could we see box number 9?
07:01If this is the third money bag, you break the bank for $5,500.
07:07And there it is.
07:08It's a $100 box.
07:09And it is connected to Sandy Duncan and to Alex Karras.
07:13Sandy, here's your question.
07:14Sandy.
07:15Yes.
07:16How are you?
07:17I was just looking at Alex.
07:18I'm fine.
07:19Okay.
07:20Sandy, in the days of the Wild West.
07:21Yes.
07:22You'd play chuck-a-lock by putting three of them in a wire cage.
07:25Three what?
07:26That's a good question.
07:29No, because you think I'm going to say, it's not dice.
07:32Because that's what you think.
07:33But it's little balls.
07:34Little balls.
07:35Alex Karras, what do you think?
07:37That's a fallacy.
07:38And she's wrong again.
07:40And she's lying on purpose because it's dice.
07:42And I don't care how cute she is.
07:43I can be like that to her.
07:45Fred, little balls or dice for the $100 box.
07:50I'll try dice.
07:51Dice it is.
07:52You've got a $100 box.
07:55Looking for a third money bag, I presume.
07:58What box do you want to try this time?
07:59Thirteen.
08:00If this is the money bag, you break the bank in $5,500.
08:04Could we see box number thirteen?
08:06It is a $300 box connected to Jan Murray and Janae Dubois.
08:11Jan, your doctor wants to check your medulla oblongata.
08:14Now, what article of clothing would you remove?
08:19I'd take off everything and wait for the nurse to make her move.
08:24Then, if I could pass the physical, I...
08:27What was that word?
08:29No, no.
08:30Medulla oblongata.
08:31Of course.
08:32The medulla oblongata is the brain.
08:33So, to examine it, you'd have to remove your hat.
08:36I see.
08:37Janne Dubois.
08:38Medulla.
08:39Medulla oblongata.
08:41Let me see.
08:42That's down around the bottom of the body.
08:44Well, what I want to know is what article of clothing would you remove?
08:47The...
08:48Gloves.
08:49Gloves.
08:50All right.
08:51Is it your hat or your gloves, Fred?
08:53It's your hat.
08:54The hat is right.
08:55It is the brain.
08:56The medulla oblongata.
08:57Well, now.
08:58You have two money bags, a $300 box, a $100, a $200 box?
09:03The world's your oyster.
09:06Looking for a money bag.
09:07Number five.
09:08He's looking for that third money bag.
09:09He wants to break the bank.
09:11And if this is it, he gets $5,500.
09:15So, could we see box number five?
09:18$5,500.
09:19$5,500.
09:20He brings these kids here.
09:23How do you like that?
09:24Woo!
09:25He brings these kids here.
09:27I would like that.
09:30Woo!
09:31You brought the bank side.
09:35All right.
09:36Oh, Fred break the bank wall and they called him in those days...
09:41Oh, wow.
09:42He says his interest in gambling.
09:45call him in those days. He says his interest in his gambling. But you also play this game
09:50extremely well, sir. $5,500 has added to your winnings. You now have a total of $12,400
09:57plus the trip to Acapulco for a grand total of $13,310. Dixie Watley, we have to say goodbye
10:06to you. What a pleasure having your pretty face on this show and your pretty body and
10:10the whole pretty you. Thank you, Dixie, for playing our game. Did you have fun?
10:14Sure did. All right. We have a nice gift for you backstage. Yes, Jan. What?
10:19Do you know it's unbelievable? What? This is only the second week of this show and they're
10:25already a half a million dollars over budget. That's what I know. Unbelievable. I know.
10:29And I'll probably come out tomorrow in T-shirts and socks and be saying, well, welcome to Break
10:34the Bank again, folks. Well, let me see here. We're going to add $500. No, we're going to
10:39start the jackpot all over again. And that means the next game will have $5,000 in the
10:43bank. We'll play that game after this. Don't go away now. All right.
10:57Well, Mr. Fred Wallen, current champion. So far, you have prizes and cash totaling $13,210. And
11:03on we go. We have a brand new challenger for you. Don't we, Johnny Jacobs?
11:06Yes, we do. Tom, a wife and mother whose hobbies are golf and antique browsing, Lori Savage.
11:11Welcome, Lori. You know how to play a game, Lori.
11:16I hope so. All right. We'll soon find out. We're going to start with you. Pick a box there.
11:20All right. I'll start off with number four.
11:23Box number four. Could we see box number four, please? And you found a $300 box right off the
11:28back. And that is connected to Sandy Duncan and Julie Merriweather. Sandy, experts say that
11:33a fresh one should have eyes that are clear and bright. Be pink and have a clean appearance
11:38with firm flesh, which will spring back when pressed with a finger. A fresh what?
11:45I want another question. No. I know it's, you go and it's a fish.
11:53Uh-huh. Lee Merriweather? You heard all of that, didn't you?
11:58Oh, yes. I know what it is. It's a cute little baby girl.
12:04Uh-huh. Is it, Lori, is it a fish or a cute little baby girl for a $300 box?
12:10Well, I'm going to say the fish because I don't think babies have pink eyes.
12:14It is a fish. You're right. Although, I don't know about the latter. You have a $300 box.
12:20And that's why we put the lips on there. That means that belongs to you, Lori. Now pick another
12:24box. I'll try number three, please. Number three, looking for another $300 box. Could
12:29we see box number three? Did she find it? Hey, you found a wild card, a deep wild card. Now
12:35you have to earn that card, young lady. And as a matter of fact, that box is connected to
12:41Jan Murray and to Lee Merriweather. And Jan, here is your question, sir. According to Dear
12:46Abby, a squeaking bed is usually caused by what? Three people with asthma.
12:58A squeaking bed is caused, I would say, by a poor frame. I see. Lee Merriweather.
13:05Me? Yes. Me. Oh, no, no. A bad, bad mattress.
13:10All right. Is it, Lori, a bad mattress or a poor frame? What do you think?
13:14Well, I'll have to say a bad mattress. Oh, honey, it's a poor frame. Jan was right. So
13:19that box returns to its neutral position. We're over now to Fred Wallen.
13:22Number three. Number three, says the wild card. And once again, to Jan and Lee. Jan, Jan, you're
13:28pregnant. Trust me, Jan. You're pregnant. According to Red Book, ideally, how long should you wait
13:36between having children? I'll at least, at least you, until you get into a private room.
13:41Oh, I would say, according to Red Book. According to Red Book. I would say three years. You should
13:51wait at least, no, just three years, and then it's time. Lee? Hmm. I have the feeling one year would be
13:59sufficient. I see. Fred, for that wild card, is it three years or one year? I'll try three years.
14:04You got it. That's it. The wild card is yours. And all you need is two more of anything to win
14:11the game. Two more of a kind, I should say. Pick a box.
14:15Number eight. Number eight. Could we see box number eight? What did he find there? He found
14:19a $200 box. That box is connected to Jan Murray and to Alex Karras. Jan, to the ancient Greeks,
14:26who was the man who slept in a bathtub and carried around a lantern in daylight? Alex Karras.
14:33No, that was, that was Socrates. Alex Karras. It was Diogenes. All right, Fred. Socrates or Diogenes?
14:45Diogenes. Diogenes is it. You now have, in effect, three $200 boxes. If you find and successfully
14:52get a third $200 box, you win the game in $600. So pick a box. Lucky number seven. Number seven.
15:00Could we see box number seven? It's a $100 box. New territory. That box is connected to Liz
15:07Torres and to Alex Karras. Liz, you try to touch your date on the patella. What are you aiming
15:13for? A hot night. No, you're aiming for a kneecap. Alex Karras. It's, uh, the patella is located in,
15:27it's the collarbone in medical terms. Yes, sir. It's kneecap or collarbone, Fred? Kneecap. Kneecap
15:33opposite. That's the patella. Well, now you have two $100 boxes and two $200 boxes. Now what are you
15:40going to do? Number 13. Number 13. If this is either a 100 or a 200, you have a chance of winning
15:47this game. And could we see box number 13? It's a $200 box. But of course, you have to answer this
15:55correctly in order to win the game. If you do come up with the correct answer, $600 in the game.
16:01That box is connected to Jan Murray and Jané Dubois. Jan. Jan, approximately how young
16:07was the youngest Roman Catholic ever appointed cardinal?
16:1513 years. I was just at St. Peter's in Rome and I heard about this. Jané Dubois.
16:21You can't believe anything he says. It's 36 years old. All right. Now, for the game and for $600,
16:2913 years or 36 years, and your answer is? I'm not religious. I just guessed 13.
16:35You've won the game. $600 right there. Very well done, sir.
16:45We know where the wild card was. It was in position number three. That's one of the things
16:49that helped him win that game. And we have to say goodbye to Laurie Savage. And we thank you
16:53very much, though, Laurie, for playing our game. We have a very nice gift for you backstage.
16:57And Johnny Jacobs, what else do we have for Fred Wallen here?
17:01Tommy can enhance any room in his house with this library of books, a year's free reading
17:06from Popular Library. This month featuring a great mystery, The Caesar Code and The Best
17:10People by Helen Van Slyke. And when you finish reading, turn your eyes to your color television.
17:16It's a color TV from Toshiba. 90 square inches of enjoyment featuring the innovative black
17:21striped tube for improved sharpness and color purity furnished by Toshiba America.
17:26Well, you're wrapping up pretty good there, Frederick. And as a matter of fact, you have a grand total
17:33now of cash and prices of $14,570. We're going to add $500 to our bank, folks. The next game
17:40will be worth $5,500. We'll play that game after this. Don't you go away. Laurie, thank you.
17:51Our current champ, Fred Wallen, has cash and prices totaling $14,570. And Johnny Jacobs,
17:57let's introduce his new challenger here.
17:59Okay, Tom, she's a public relations counselor whose interests are art and people, Jill Sefton.
18:05All right, Jill. Welcome aboard, Jill. I'm going to ask you to start this game off. Would
18:11you do that for us?
18:12I'd be happy to.
18:12Then pick a box.
18:14I will take number eight.
18:15Number eight. Could we see box number eight, please, and see what she's... Oh, a $200 box.
18:20Connected to Jan Murray and Alex Sparris. Jan, you have just made what is politely termed a
18:26zitzmark in the snow. What have you done?
18:29I think I violated my white ski suit. That's what I think it sounds like. But no, a zitzmark. If I
18:37made a zitzmark in the snow, it means I sat down.
18:41Uh-huh. Alex Sparris.
18:43Well, it's so crazy because I am such a great skier and I know shushing and things like that.
18:47What it is really, truthfully, and you know it as well as I do, is that you lose your ski,
18:51your skis in the snow, and that's exactly what it is.
18:54Uh-huh. So, Jill, is it you lose your skis or you sit down in the snow?
18:58I think it's you sit down in the snow.
18:59That's right, or fall down in the snow. There you go.
19:02You now have a $200 box. We'll put the lips on there indicating they belong to you, Jill.
19:06Pick another box.
19:07Okay, I'll try number nine for another $200.
19:10She's looking for another one. Could we find... Look at box number nine. You found a wild card.
19:14You have to earn that card. You have to come up with the correct answer in order to earn it,
19:19and that box is connected to Sandy Duncan and Alex Karras.
19:22Sandy, after the witch locked Rapunzel in the tower, her lover climbed up something of hers.
19:29What did he climb up?
19:30Oh, nothing unpleasant. It was her hair.
19:35Uh-huh. Alex Karras, what did he climb up?
19:39She threw down a little bracelet and...
19:41No, she didn't.
19:42Sandy, Sandy, please, it's my turn.
19:45And I know about Rapunzel, and it's a bracelet that could expand.
19:50And he was so light and so...
19:52Oh, Alex!
19:52No, he prances, and he was so light, he could just jump and that's it.
19:55Jill, was it her hair or a bracelet?
19:57It was her hair.
19:58It was her hair.
