00:00What's Thou Like To Live Deliciously?
00:05Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we're counting down our picks for the most intense, scary films of all time.
00:11These fear flicks effectively double as character-driven dramas, which makes them stand out.
00:15Dad, I don't like this.
00:28Ryan Coogler's horror masterpiece takes us to the Jim Crow era in the American South,
00:33where the Smokestack Twins set up a juke joint for the black community.
00:37They bring their cousin Sammy along, whose transcendental talent in blues music
00:41spends time and space, but also lures ancient evil to the establishment.
00:55An Irish vampire, Remick, knocks on their door with the promise of salvation and belonging.
01:00Yet, such proposed fellowship is rooted in exploitation and erasure, a metaphor for race relations in the 30s.
01:07Well, we believe in equality and music.
01:12We just came here to play.
01:14Spend some money, have a good time.
01:16The ever-lurking sense of impending doom and sinners is scarier than any vampire.
01:21Sammy's Dilemma, Stack's sacrifice to protect Mary in a cruel world, and Smok's self-destruction,
01:26these are what we care about, though the supernatural spectacle is glorious too.
01:30They playin' music.
01:37Number 9.
01:39The Haunting.
01:40Hill House isn't the only thing haunted in this film.
01:42Our protagonist's soul is too.
01:44The Haunting follows Eleanor, an emotionally vulnerable woman, whose mental health is fraying at the edges.
01:50She's riddled with guilt over her mother's death, and has past trauma from experiencing paranormal activity.
01:56I'm here, what is it?
02:00What is it?
02:01I thought it was you pounding.
02:03It was.
02:05I mean, I did.
02:07But now, it's down near the other end of the hole.
02:09When she's invited to Hill House to investigate ghostly happenings, her psychological state deteriorates, spiraling to the point of no return.
02:17This adaptation of Shirley Jackson's The Haunting of Hill House focuses on Eleanor's loneliness, obsession, and mental decline.
02:24He doesn't make the rules around here.
02:28Nell, I'm talking to you.
02:31I'm sorry.
02:32What's the matter with you? Didn't you hear, Marque?
02:34Rather than playing up the otherworldly dread, it gives us a slow and painful unraveling that can make the audience feel helpless.
02:41Add to that a queer subtext with a dash of repression, and you have dramatic gold.
02:46Now be very, very careful.
02:50Now come down.
02:53Number 8. Let the Right One In
02:55A tormented young boy named Oscar gets involved with a neighborhood kid, Eli, whom he discovers to be a vampire.
03:02Their loneliness gives way to a strange bond, as they protect each other in their own ways.
03:07Slå tillbaka mer än vad du vågar.
03:10Då slutar de.
03:13Då hjälper jag dig.
03:18Jag kan det.
03:20However, the line between codependence and love is easily blurred.
03:24By the end of the film, Oscar skips town with Eli, but we're left questioning if it's devotion or manipulation that moves the boy.
03:31After all, in choosing Eli, he's accepting a grim fate, like Eli's former caretaker, Hakann.
03:37This decision both corrupts and preserves his innocence, and that duality is what drives the plot.
03:51Eli is a terrifying fiend, but Oscar's willingness to look past it is the true horror.
03:56Number 7. The Fly
04:08A teleportation experiment takes a tragic turn when scientist Seth Brundle accidentally fuses his DNA with that of a fly.
04:15Bone-chilling body horror ensues, giving the audience ample scares.
04:28However, the heart of the story lies in Seth's psychological transformation.
04:32His journey from hubris to denial, desperation, and grief is appalling.
04:38I was not pure. The teleporter insisted on inner purity. I was not pure.
04:44I don't know what you mean.
04:46Meanwhile, his lover Ronnie must bear witness to this tragedy while battling the fear of inheriting his mutation via their unborn child.
04:54Through the monstrous Brundle Fly, director David Cronenberg presents a meditation on disease, identity loss,
05:01and the oft-unseen emotional toll caregivers must bear.
05:04To put it simply, you go in for a sci-fi horror and come out with your soul crushed.
05:09You have to leave now. And never come back here.
05:14Number 6. Don't Look Now
05:17The loss of a child is one of the most harrowing experiences parents can go through.
05:21John and Laura Baxter lose their young daughter Christine.
05:24Although struggling internally, they travel to Venice for John's work.
05:28There, Laura finds healing through a psychic, who informs her that their daughter is happy.
05:33John refuses to see merit in the claim, but is plagued by strange visions that remind him of Christine.
05:39What's that, John?
05:41It's okay. I found the real world. It's down here. Come on.
05:47Trapped in his trauma, John slowly loses his grip on reality until he's too far gone.
05:52Nicholas Rogue offers a masterful reflection on mourning here, exploring the devastating consequences of leaving grief unattended.
06:09Unfortunately for John, it returns as a fatal fixation, leading to his demise.
06:14The horror here is bone deep.
06:17Wait. Wait. Wait.
06:25Wait.
06:27Number 5. The Babadook
06:31Amelia is a single mother who lost her husband on the day she gave birth to her son, Samuel.
06:36Now, six years later, the boy's personality is getting exceedingly disruptive, but she can hardly tend to his needs without resentment.
06:43Things reach a tipping point when Sam discovers a book about a mysterious entity called Mr. Babadook and becomes convinced it's real.
07:00Haunted by the Babadook, Amelia is overcome with urges to take her son's life.
07:05The monster becomes a physical manifestation of her untreated mental illness and suppressed trauma.
07:10Only by confronting the darkness does it recede, allowing mother and son to heal.
07:22The titular creature offers moments of grotesque fright, but it's Amelia's isolation and her nightmarish descent into uncontrollable rage that terrifies.
07:37Number 4. Rosemary's Baby
07:39The scariest part about this film is just how relevant it is now.
07:43Rosemary's Baby is an occult horror movie that explores the violation of consent and bodily autonomy.
07:49Rosemary's husband sells her womb to the devil in exchange for fame.
07:53She is stripped of her reproductive rights and forced into a pregnancy that is ungodly and drains her life force.
08:00This is no dream, this is really happening!
08:07She is gaslit into thinking her very real experience of pain, is paranoia, and is denied proper care.
08:13Her newborn is taken away after she gives birth, but she's then expected to nurture the Antichrist.
08:18What have you done to it?
08:20What have you done to its eyes?
08:23It's the patriarchy on steroids.
08:26No matter how many times you watch this film, it never gets less ghastly.
08:30What have you done to him, you maniac?
08:33Satan is his father, not Guy.
08:36Number 3. Hereditary
08:38Ari Aster takes generational trauma, compounds it with a family tragedy, and stages it on a cultic tableau in this blood-curdling film.
08:46It follows Annie, who's struggling with the loss of her estranged mother, Ellen.
08:50Days later, her daughter Charlie dies in an accident caused by her son, Peter.
08:55Annie is consumed by guilt, resentment, and grief, which embitters her relationship with Peter.
09:00But you can't take responsibility for anything! So now I can't accept, and I can't forgive!
09:08In the desperate pursuit of closure, she leans on the supernatural, as willed by a demon-worshipping cult previously led by Ellen.
09:15The supernatural chaos escalates in tandem with Annie's psychological breakdown as the Grams devolve into dysfunction and ultimately perish.
09:23Only Peter survives, posting the demon king Paimon in his body, doomed to pass on a legacy of inherited trauma.
09:40Hail, Paimon!
09:42Hail, Paimon!
09:44Hail, Paimon!
09:48Number 2. The Exorcist
09:51This classic tugs at our heartstrings while making our skin crawl.
09:55The Exorcist revolves around the torturous possession of 12-year-old Reagan.
09:59When science fails to save the girl, her mother seeks the help of Catholic priests Father Marin and Father Karras, who decide to perform an exorcism.
10:07But deliver us from the evil one.
10:09Save me, O God, by thy name. By thy might defend my cause.
10:13Proud men have risen up against me. Men of Ireland seek my life.
10:19While the ritual is the central conflict of the film, there are deeper undercurrents too.
10:23Father Karras struggles with his faith amid personal loss.
10:26The demon, Pazuzu, is seen as a representation of the fear surrounding the socio-political upheavals of the late 60s.
10:33Before almighty God. Guilty before his son. Guilty before the whole human race.
10:42It's the Lord who expels you. He who is coming to judge both the living and the dead, and the world by fire.
10:49Meanwhile, Reagan's possession conveys the negative perception of defiant youth among older generations during that time.
10:56That said, feminists consider it a demonization of female sexuality. This complexity has given the film its immortality.
11:03God damn you! Take me! Take me!
11:10Before we unveil our top pick, here are a few honorable mentions.
11:13The Witch. This folk horror starring Anya Taylor-Joy explores religious paranoia.
11:18You killed that father! You're a witch! I love you! I love you!
11:25What?
11:27Audition. A widower's attempt to find the perfect woman turns into his worst nightmare.
11:33Pearl. Repression becomes murderous rage in this Ty West film starring Mia Goth.
11:48Help! Help me! Somebody please help!
11:54Carrie. The titular heroine comes of age in a world of shame and unleashes bloody revenge.
12:09The substance. Society's toxic beauty standards force a fated celeb to take a monstrous form.
12:15You are the Matrix. Everything comes from you. And everything is you.

12:39Number 1. The Silence of the Lambs
12:42Jonathan Demme's chilling psychological thriller doesn't need cheap thrills or mindless scares to entertain.
12:47The horror it evokes is both cerebral and visceral as it exposes the darkest parts of human nature.
12:54Our villain, Buffalo Bill, is a serial killer driven by self-hatred.
12:58To catch him, FBI trainee Clarice Starling interviews the psychopathic Dr. Hannibal Lecter, hoping for insights into the minds of killers.
13:05Dr. Lecter, my name is Clarice Starling. Can I speak with you?
13:10You're one of Jack Crawford's, aren't you?
13:13I am, yes.
13:14Their intense conversations have a corrosive effect on her mental health, but ultimately liberate her from the shackles of her own trauma.
13:21I went to live with my mother's cousin and her husband in Montana. They had a ranch.
13:27Was it a cattle ranch?
13:29Sheep and horses.
13:31How long did you live there?
13:33Two months.
13:35Why so briefly?
13:37I ran away.
13:38With newfound courage, she apprehends Buffalo Bill.
13:41Clarice's transformation forms the emotional core of the film, flanked by grisly crime scenes that terrify.
13:46Thus, it strikes the perfect balance between horror and drama, doing complete justice to both genres.
13:53I have no plans to call on you Clarice. The world's more interesting with you in it.
13:58So you take care now to extend me the same courtesy.
14:02You know I can't make that promise.
