02:15However, it's not just pure campy fun, but artfully surreal.
02:19Almost like you've been pulled into a nightmare without rhyme or reason.
02:23That said, it does justice to the horror genre with some pretty gory turns of events too.
02:28Even if you just watch this for the giggles, you'll never forget it.

02:34I saw this at the IFC Theatre the day I did an SNL episode,
02:38and the next day I went to IFC Theatre at midnight and watched this movie.

02:45If alternate history is your jam, you can't miss this movie.

05:37Mother and daughter, Shida and Dorsa, are left to fend for themselves,
05:41not only amid the tangible atrocities of war, but also the torment of the malevolent djinn it brought along.
05:47This folkloric being is dread incarnate, causing Shida to lose her grip on reality as she struggles to protect her little girl.
05:55Barbek Anvari is masterful in his direction here, capturing an endless sense of suffocation on film.

07:27Oh, I hadn't expected that.
07:31Tongue has been severed.
07:33André Ovidol's foray into English-language cinema checks all the boxes for a fulfilling horror movie.
07:40Mysterious deaths, necromancy, witches, you name it.
07:44It all starts with coroner Tommy Tilden, played by Brian Cox, who is training his son, Austin, in his line of work.
07:51The duo comes across an unidentified cadaver and must now perform an autopsy.
07:56As they peel back the layers of Jane Doe's body, a chilling mystery unfolds, tracing back to the Salem witch trials.

11:57True to its title, this story revolves around an assassin named Tasha Vos, who possesses people.

12:14See if she can fight her way back and finish the job.
12:17There's already a degree of permanent damage.
12:21The longer she stays in, the greater the risk to her brain.
12:24Possessor would have been a great action film, but it chooses to convey the horrors of losing control instead.
12:30Whether it's Vos' point of view or her hosts, there's always a sense of terror brewing in each scene.
12:35By its conclusion, this psychological thriller will have you feeling paranoid about everything around you.

12:51Number 19. Mandy.
12:53It wouldn't be a Nick Cage film if his character didn't go off the rails.
12:57If that's your thing, then watching his Mandy character, Red Miller, go absolutely nuts will be a welcome sight.
13:04After a demonic cult sacrifices his girlfriend, Red goes on a roaring rampage of revenge.
13:10They lit her on fire!
13:14There were widow hippie types.
13:18Whole bunch of them.
13:20Filled with gory visuals and so much blood that you might forget what other colours look like,
13:25it's a violent experience from start to finish.
13:28Mandy's no-holds-barred content is hard to stomach, and the film knows it.
13:32Although the brutality is unrelenting, the antagonist's twisted minds have a scary quality of their own.
13:39She burned brightly, Mandy.
13:43Don't you think?
13:44Mandy is loud and proud of its premise, and there's a definite thrill in buckling up for this ride.
13:50Number 18. The Voices.
13:52This part comedy, part horror is as messed up as it is funny.
13:56Ryan Reynolds plays Jerry, a man with schizophrenia, whose hallucinations get the best of him.
14:01Convinced that his pet dog and cat talk to him, Jerry is motivated to kill.
14:06I'm evil.
14:07No, you're not.
14:08I've killed things on purpose, Jerry.
14:09There's no shame in it.
14:10It's instinct.
14:11The only time I've felt truly alive is when I'm killing.
14:15Weirdly enough, you can't help but feel bad for the character,
14:18as his list of crimes is a result of severe loneliness and bad luck.
14:21Added to the horror aspect is the deliberately happy and optimistic tone of the movie.

14:27You betcha.
14:29Sing a happy song, sing a happy song.
14:32Why don't you sing along, sing a happy song.
14:35The filmmakers seem to want you to feel uncomfortable,
14:38as Jerry's fragile state of mind threatens to wreak havoc.

14:44And don't ask me.
14:45You shouldn't make it worse.
14:47We sit and we wait.
14:50And we die?
14:52Not if you sit and you wait.
14:53Getting trapped anywhere is awful.
14:56But what if you're trapped with a gang of murderous neo-Nazis out to get you?
15:00Green Room follows the harrowing experience of a rock band in this situation.
15:04After witnessing a murder, the main characters have to figure out a way to escape.
15:08That's easier said than done,
15:09since the place is crawling with men with savage intentions.
15:12Okay, stand back.

15:21Although there are several action sequences,
15:24it largely leans towards a horror setting.
15:27Green Room combines a stifling feeling of claustrophobia
15:30with a foreboding sense of doom.
15:32With a story that moves at a quick pace
15:34and racks up a notable kill count,
15:36it's a film that never lifts its foot off the gas.

15:40The Entity.
15:41Whoever says that you shouldn't fear the unknown
15:43clearly hasn't seen this movie.
15:45In The Entity,
15:46Carla Moran is terrorized by an invisible being.
15:49Haunted by something she can't explain,
15:51Carla begins to lose her grip on reality.
15:53Then it is time for you to see a good psychiatrist.
15:55I can't afford it.
15:56Oh yes, you can.
15:57Betty Rivers, I happen to know,
15:58she goes over to the walk-in clinic at the university
16:00and payment is whatever you can afford.
16:02I hate the thought of it.
16:03Oh wow, I'm not crazy.
16:04Why this entity latched onto her isn't explained.
16:07However, this adds to the film's fear factor,
16:09as Carla's relentless torment
16:11has an additional layer of mystery.
16:13The film leaves us in a constant state of paranoia,
16:16just like the protagonist.
16:17It's a devastating and painful portrayal of suffering
16:20that hits much harder than anticipated.
16:23You won't appear.
16:26You won't appear because you're a devil out of hell
16:29and you're afraid.

16:35Number 15.
16:37Dog Soldiers.
16:381987's Predator remains popular
16:40for blending sci-fi with survival horror.
16:42Dog Soldiers is in the same vein,
16:44but instead of a killer alien,
16:46we get a pack of werewolves.
16:48A squad of soldiers is in for the fight of their lives
16:50when hunted by a group of lycans.
16:53It won't make any difference.
16:55They won't die.
16:57Yeah, well, excuse me,
16:58better pay your mind, sir.
16:59You want peace of mind?
17:01Run for your lives
17:02before they tear your legs for Monday.
17:03As their numbers dwindle,
17:05the possibility of a complete bloodbath
17:07looks inevitable.
17:08And while it's mainly on the scary side,
17:10some moments of dark comedy
17:11diversify Dog Soldiers' appeal.

17:33Fans have seen Ethan Hawke
17:34in romances like Before Sunrise
17:36and gritty action thrillers

17:38But the actor arguably shows better range
17:40as hapless writer Ellison Oswalt.

18:20and shots that will have you shrieking.

18:24dole out jump scares like there's no tomorrow.
18:27Sinister isn't revolutionary,
18:28but it gives horror fans exactly what they want
18:31with heart-thumping effect.

18:34The Exorcist 3.
18:36For a franchise's third entry,
18:38few films get as original as this.
18:40The first Exorcist remains a staple of the genre,
18:43so it was always difficult to follow in its footsteps.
18:46Here, Lieutenant Kinderman
18:47investigates a series of murders
18:49that connect to the Gemini killer.

21:54and if she were a little girl in the first place.
21:57I think there could be something wrong with Esther.

22:01You told us you never had any trouble with her.
22:03I didn't.
22:05But trouble does have a way of finding her.
22:07Orphan works as a slow-burn psychological horror.
22:10The character's streak of sadism takes several forms,
22:13whether it's killing people with hammers
22:15or tormenting her adoptive siblings.
22:18The film sprinkles several hints about Esther's identity
22:20before the huge reveal,
22:22when its climactic moments kick into overdrive.
