05:06The Changeling.
05:07Grief and atmosphere are at the heart of this story.
05:10Are you the child killed by the cold car?

05:17The Changeling is still terrifying enough to leave you sleepless for a few nights, but
05:21it balances those scares with a moving story of loss.
05:24Relying on overwhelming ambiance and psychological dread over cheap gore, it proves that sometimes
05:29the most terrifying monsters are simply the buried secrets of greedy, ruthless men.
05:34Well, what was that all about?
05:35Senator Carmichael thinks he's being blackmailed.
05:38While its methodical pacing won't be for everyone, there is no denying the visceral
05:42impact you'll be left with at the credits.
05:44There's a reason it's still regarded as one of the best, even 40 years after release.

05:59The Invisible Man.
06:00Escaping domestic violence is only half the battle.
06:03Trauma is something you can't outrun.
06:05An idea that takes on a new terrifying meaning in The Invisible Man.
06:16Re-contextualizing the monster as the echoes of a dangerous relationship is brilliant.
06:21It allows the film to gaslight, manipulate, and frame both the audience and see.
06:25It's some kind of suit that Adrian has built, and it has cameras, and I somehow, what?
06:33Then, when The Invisible Man becomes not so invisible anymore, it feels like the movie has
06:38really earned it.
06:39You think you're learning how to beat me, so I'm gonna truly teach you something.
06:44Not only is The Invisible Man an avant-garde update to a famous story, but it is one of the
06:49most addictive thrillers in recent memory, period.

06:53Smile.
06:54It takes some serious work to turn a grin into a source of terror, but that is exactly
06:59what Smile does.

07:08We have to give this movie its flowers, because there is another world where this could have

07:25Spine-tingling, but sophisticated at the same time, you'll come to Smile for the scares,
07:29but stay for its surprising, nuanced message about the ways we all subconsciously affect
07:33each other.

07:40The Witch.

07:54Robert Eggers crafts such a suffocating tale here, it's genuinely difficult to avoid getting
07:58sucked in.
07:59On the surface, it's a fairly simple story, but The Witch excels in what it doesn't show.
08:04It lives in lengthy still frames and stretches of silence, slowly ramping up the terror until
08:09it's practically unbearable.
08:17And then, only then will it give you a half beat to compose yourself before it's on to
08:22the next scene.
08:22We don't want to give too much away, but take our word for it.
08:25The Witch is downright spellbinding.

08:36It follows.
08:37You can get rid of it, okay?
08:38Just sleep with someone as soon as you can.
08:41Just pass it along.
08:42In this film, you're never safe.
08:44Not when you're asleep, not when you're with friends, and definitely not out in public.
08:48The titular It is always on its way.
08:55Sometimes it's a stranger, sometimes it's someone you know, but it's always coming.
09:00And when it finds you, well, you can guess.
09:03The ingenious premise adds a sense of danger to even the most innocent scenes.
09:07You really feel as desperate as Jay does, constantly wondering where the monster will
09:11strike next.
09:12Combined with a dreamlike aesthetic and a truly haunting score, It Follows has risen above
09:17a mere cult hit and turned into a true modern classic.

09:25Get Out.
09:26Jordan Peele's directorial debut scares audiences in all the right ways.
09:30In lieu of gory set pieces or excessive jump scares, his film relies on its politically charged
09:36mysteries to generate tension.
09:38And to say it works would be a massive understatement.

09:43Sorry, man.
09:44Okay.
09:45Get out!
09:46Chris meeting his girlfriend's parents is its own kind of horror.
09:49But by the time the credits roll, Get Out devolves into a bone-chilling fright fest that's
09:54bound to leave you thinking.
09:56Its biting social critique struck a major chord with audiences and critics.

10:03We are the gods trapped in cocoons.
10:06Alongside a massive box office hall, Peele walked away with the Academy Award for Best

10:13Clearly, Get Out leaves its viewers wanting to do anything but.

10:18The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari.
10:20With just one look at this film's striking visuals, it's obvious why it's considered a
10:25revolution for arthouse horror movies.
10:27Dr. Caligari's twisted set design is the very definition of unsettling.
10:32Even when nothing particularly scary is happening on screen.
10:40And that's to say nothing of its actual narrative.
10:43The tale of a mad hypnotist turning patients into murderers is a painfully potent mirror
10:48to the state of 20th century Germany.
10:50It's all the more impressive since the silent film accomplishes it without any spoken dialogue.
11:00Dr. Caligari's artistic merits have kept it in the conversation for over 100 years after
11:05its release.
11:06And there's no reason to believe it can't do it for another 100, too.
11:09Number 18.
11:11Eraserhead.
11:12The story here is remarkably straightforward.
11:15Henry has a wife.
11:17He cheats on her.
11:18He blames their baby.
11:19And the screen cuts to black.
11:21However, the what isn't nearly as interesting as the how and why.
11:26You see, David Lynch's surrealist masterpiece features imagery so disturbing, it has to be
11:31seen to be believed.
11:39Whether it's walking home from the grocery store or eating dinner with some friends,
11:43the film successfully turns each and every mundane act into a deeply horrific set piece.
11:48It's a harrowing portrait of parenthood, for better or for worse.
11:52Suffice it to say, Eraserhead is utterly unforgettable, if only for that nightmarish baby prop.

12:02Number 17.
12:03Jacob's Ladder.
12:04This film is a little bit of everything on the horror scale.
12:07Psychological terror mixed with arthouse vibes and surrealistic moments.
12:14But above all else, it is terrifying.
12:17The movie follows Tim Robbins as a Vietnam War veteran who begins to experience extremely
12:22strange visions.
12:23The nature of these visions remains a tantalizing mystery throughout, and you soon begin to question
12:28the film's reality.
12:29It'll make you feel disgusted long after the credits roll thanks to its discomforting scenes
12:34and hopeless attitude.
12:36But no matter how difficult it may be to stomach, Jacob's Ladder is definitely worth stepping
12:41on.
12:41No one can remember that night.
12:44Like it flashes, but they don't make sense.
12:47Number 16.
12:48Repulsion.
12:49Repulsion was director Roman Polanski's first feature film to be released in English, and
12:54what an introduction it was.
12:59When the troubled Carol Ledoux is left alone in the apartment she shares with her sister,
13:03she begins to experience strange and unexplainable occurrences.
13:07The movie is terribly claustrophobic and isolating, a terrifying depiction of a young woman's slow
13:12dip into utter insanity.
13:14The acting, Polanski's use of sound, the startling images, and the filmmaking are all top-notch, and
13:20the result is a truly unnerving psychological experience.
13:32Number 15.
13:33The Haunting.
13:34The dead are not quiet in Hill House.
13:38Director Robert Wise interpreted this story as one about mental health instead of ghosts,
13:43and that vision is reflected in the film's final cut.
13:46Namely, there's a distinct lack of blood or monsters in its two-hour runtime.
13:51Don't mistake that as a lack of scares, though.
13:53On the contrary, The Haunting is easily one of the most off-putting films of its time.
13:59Oh, someone.
14:01It's a lie.
14:02Wise purposefully used an imperfect camera lens in order to give the set a distorted look.
14:07As a result, The Haunted House feels as much like a character as the paranormal investigators.
14:12Plus, the focus on Eleanor's deteriorating mental state ensures that when the scares do come,
14:18they are fiendishly effective.
14:21Number 14.
14:22The Others.
14:23I think that sometimes the world of the dead gets mixed up.
14:33The Others follows Nicole Kidman as a single mother who begins to suspect that her house is haunted.
14:38And even though it's a modern movie, it gleefully reminds us of old-school horror.
14:42There are no cheap jump scares, screeching violins, or buckets of blood.
14:46It's just a creepy haunted house that acts up in subtly horrifying ways.
14:50And Nicole Kidman perfectly portrays a troubled and increasingly desperate mother who only wants the safety of her children.
14:56It also has one of the most shocking endings in horror movie history, even if it's become common knowledge in
15:02the years since.

15:06The Others is a simple, old-fashioned ghost story.
15:09And we love it.

15:20For the first hour of this seminal Japanese work, you'd be forgiven for assuming it's an oddly paced romance film.
15:26But a body bag and an infamous needle scene later, an audition reveals itself as one of the most sinister
15:32horror films of all time.
15:41The shocking twist of fate works so well because the film spends most of its runtime intentionally lulling the audience
15:47into a false sense of security.
15:49Outside of an odd line here and there, there is nothing to prepare you for what the movie becomes in
15:55its final minutes.
16:07Audition is a true masterclass of turning audience expectations into a sadistic type of gruesome horror.
16:14Number 12.
16:15The Babadook
16:24The Babadook was an unfortunate victim of misleading marketing.
16:28Many audiences expected another haunted house romp like The Conjuring and were left disappointed with this more methodical film.
16:34However, those without faulty expectations found a harrowing movie about the destructive power of grief.
16:40The story follows a depressed single mother who becomes hunted and influenced by The Babadook, a monster found in her
16:47son's pop-up book.
16:48While The Babadook is indeed scary, it's in the metaphorical nature of the monster where the real scares lie, as
16:54Amelia soon becomes enveloped by the madness that The Babadook represents.
16:58This is both a depressing and uplifting film, and it's frightening to boot.

17:12Number 11.
17:13The Blair Witch Project
17:15To make this found footage movie, three actors were set loose in the woods with a camcorder and no written
17:21dialogue.
17:22Eight days of filming later, they turned in a movie that's still influential to this day.
17:27I know, I know, we have to get back to the car.
17:29We're obviously not wanted here, so let's get the hell out.
17:32The shaky cam presentation adds a certain visceral quality to each unnerving moment, and there are a lot of them.
17:39Yet somehow, the accelerating scares never compromise how authentic the footage feels.
17:44Even with the knowledge that this is fiction, the movie never fails to put you right in the character's shoes.
17:49I am so, so sorry for everything that has happened.
17:56At a time when horror films were becoming increasingly cinematic, The Blair Witch Project went in the completely opposite direction.
18:03And evidently, that was a very good thing.
18:07Number 10.
18:08Funny Games
18:08Despite its name, this horror flick is no laughing matter.
18:12Just not for the reasons most expect.
18:15On paper, a pair of sadistic invaders tormenting an innocent family is pretty standard horror fare.
18:21But instead of resisting those tropes, Funny Games embraces them by slowly and surely blurring the line between fact and
18:28fiction.
18:36While there are still plenty of grisly moments to satisfy genre diehards, none of them matches the mind-bending twists
18:42this movie throws at you.
18:44At a certain point, it feels less like a movie and more like, well, a game.
18:49Albeit one that is totally rigged.
18:52Nothing is scarier than villains who can write their own ending.
19:02Number 9.
19:03Don't Look Now
19:06Another oldie but a goodie, Don't Look Now stars Donald Sutherland and Julie Christie as a depressed couple who travel
19:12to Venice.
19:13There, they meet a psychic who informs them that their dead daughter is attempting to reach and warn them of
19:18impending danger.
19:19Oh yes, she's with you, she's with you, my dear.
19:22The movie is arguably a masterpiece, and it still manages to stop the heart all these years later, thanks to
19:29its horrifying scenes and harrowing depiction of grief.
19:32It also has one of the scariest endings in horror movie history, one that's sure to leave you open-mouthed
19:38and petrified.
19:39It's influenced many filmmakers over the years, and it's not hard to see why.
19:43Wait, wait.
19:50Wait.
19:53Number 8.
19:54The Sixth Sense
19:55M. Night Shyamalan's breakout feature is known for having the twist ending to end all twist endings.
20:01But there's a whole film preceding that moment, and its execution is just as exemplary.
20:06I don't want to be scared anymore.
20:08From the very start, The Sixth Sense excels in the steady rise and fall of tension.
20:13It takes the time to let its characters sit back and breathe.
20:17Then, when a ghostly hand reaches out from under the bed, it has genuine stakes.
20:22Best of all, the film is just as interested in its contemplative themes as it is terrifying its audience.

20:33I think we said everything we needed to say.
20:35That thoughtful approach makes for an incredibly fulfilling two hours, whether you know the ending or not.

20:43Black Swan
20:44You what?
20:47I want to be perfect.
20:48Director Darren Aronofsky certainly knows how to explore the dark sides of the human mind, and he does it masterfully
20:54in Black Swan.
20:55This is a movie about a ballerina who descends into insanity due to the immense pressure of landing a coveted
21:00role.
21:01Natalie Portman shines as Nina Sayers, capturing both the childlike innocence of the white swan, and the dark maturity of
21:07the black swan.
21:08And helping us to feel conflicted about the nature of her character and her sanity.
21:13The film explores the dangers of attempting to reach perfection in a beautiful, scary, and unforgettable way.
21:19Aronofsky is a true master of the psychological.
21:22Perfect.
21:23What?
21:25Perfect.

21:32That is perfect.
21:34Number 6.
21:35Hereditary
21:35At its core, this is a movie about a family in mourning.
21:39And yet, even in its most innocuous moments, Hereditary channels an unbearable amount of rising dread.
21:46It's hard to breathe.
21:49What do you mean?
21:51I think my throat's getting bigger.
21:53Then, just like that, it all boils over in a burst of graphic violence.
21:58And then another.
21:59And another.
22:01None of these scenes is easy to sit through by any means.
22:08Still, it's hard not to be mesmerized by the film's ambitious themes.
22:13Especially when they're brought to life by a career best performance from Toni Collette.

22:24All in all, Hereditary succeeds because it's an utterly enthralling deconstruction of grief that just so happens to come with
22:31a few jump scares.

22:35Misery
22:36I thought you were good, Paul.
22:38But you're not good.
22:40You're just another lying old dirty birdie.
22:43Stephen King has really done it all when it comes to horror.
22:46A little gross-out gore here, a ghost story there, and some vampires sprinkled on top.
22:51With misery, he tackled non-supernatural psychological horror.
22:55And he succeeded brilliantly.
22:57I have this gun.
23:03Sometimes I think about using it.
23:06The story, about an author who becomes trapped with a psychotic fan,
23:09was adapted perfectly by Rob Reiner,
23:11who beautifully transfers the isolation and claustrophobia felt on the pages to the screen.
23:16Kathy Bates' performance in particular is stellar,
23:19playing the seemingly pleasant but realistically unhinged Annie Wilkes.
23:23It's a terrific adaptation,
23:25and a terrifying look into the dangers of celebrity worship.

23:30God's sake.
23:31It's for the best.
23:32Number 4.
23:33The Silence of the Lambs
23:35Where were you going, Clarice?
23:37I don't know.
23:38I didn't have any food, any water, and it was very cold.
23:42The Silence of the Lambs is undoubtedly a masterpiece,
23:44and it remains the only horror film to win the Academy Award for Best Picture,
23:49a testament to just how memorable and powerful it is.
23:51The film follows FBI trainee Clarice Starling,
23:54who seeks the help of an imprisoned cannibal in order to catch a serial killer.
23:58If I help you, Clarice, it will be turns with us too.
24:02Quit pro quo.
24:03I tell you things, you tell me things.
24:05She soon forms a fascinatingly therapeutic bond with the cannibal, Hannibal Lecter.
24:09Not only is their relationship tantalizingly complex,
24:13but also the film itself is rife with unforgettable quotes,
24:16nightmarish images,
24:17and one of the best villainous performances of all time in Anthony Hopkins.
24:21I ate his liver with some fava beans and a nice Chianti.
24:29It's not only a fantastic horror movie, but a fantastic movie too.

24:41Number 3. Psycho.
24:43It's not hyperbole to say Alfred Hitchcock's signature slasher flick
24:46practically defined what the horror genre could achieve.
24:49That being unforgettable plot twists,
24:51despicable villains,
24:53and loads of spine-tingling moments.
24:55Add in a downright iconic musical score,
24:57and it's really no wonder Psycho lives on as Hitchcock's magnum opus.
25:04It's so scarily good,
25:06it's genuinely difficult to choose a favorite part.
25:09The performances,
25:10the direction,
25:11or the fact that Hitchcock pulled it all off with a fraction of his normal budget.
25:15Either way,
25:16we can all unanimously agree on one thing.
25:18Despite decades of innovations and rip-offs,
25:21Psycho still easily holds up as a gripping example of tasteful horror at its best.
