00:00You know, it's so screwed up the way it is now, Smiley.
00:04You're going to have a different team every year,
00:06and, you know, kids are just going to the highest bidder now,
00:10so you don't know what players you're going to have until the season starts.
00:14You know, I played golf with Coach Saban recently,
00:16and that guy I admire and respect the hell out of him,
00:19but he's the greatest college football coach ever.
00:21And, you know, just talk about ways to fix the sport.
00:25I don't know what you're going to do,
00:26because I don't know how you're going to be able to put the toothpaste back in the tube.
00:32And, you know, he was picking my brain because I want to fix it
00:37because my thing is we have screwed up college sports
00:41for like 1% of the players who probably should be getting paid.
00:45Yeah, but the other 99% are getting a free education,
00:50which is the most important aspect from where I look at it,
00:53because most of these kids are black kids.
00:55And I want them to get that free education because it's a big deal.
01:00But because some guys who are not getting paid,
01:03and I'm not opposed to players getting paid,
01:05but not the numbers they're getting paid,
01:06because that's an unsustainable business model.
01:09To come up with $10, $20, $30 million every year.
01:13And basketball, the thing that sucks about basketball, Smiley,
01:17if I'm going to pay, I have to pay a kid millions of dollars
01:20to be at Auburn for six months.
01:21I'm not getting any return on my investment.
01:25That makes zero sense.
01:27At least in football, you get a great player.
01:29You can pay him for three years.
01:30He's there.
01:32But to pay a basketball player millions of dollars
01:36to be at Auburn for six months.
01:38And, like, Cooper Flagg is amazing.
01:41Like, he got Duke to the final four, which is incredible.
01:47But, like, if you're going to pay guys millions and millions of dollars,
01:50you've got to at least get a championship out of it.
01:53And he just wanted...
01:54You can't guarantee it.
01:56You can't guarantee it.
01:57And he is phenomenal.
01:58I cannot wait to see Cooper Flagg in the NBA.
02:01And they had a bunch of NBA players.
02:03I think...
02:04I forget the kid from...
02:06He went to Charlotte.
02:09Can't think of his name.
02:10He had the kid who went to the...
02:11They had three NBA players.
02:13And they didn't even win the whole thing.
02:15So, I just don't understand how we're going to fix this thing.
02:19It's going to be very interesting in the next few years.
02:22Well, even, too, the last thing I'll kind of touch on
02:25with this college and NBA stuff, too,
02:28is that you have a player like Chad Baker-Mazzaro,
02:30who's one of the best players at Auburn over the last couple of years.
02:34He obviously was up for a renegotiation process,
02:37ends up taking more money,
02:39or allegedly takes more money and goes to USC.
02:42Reminder that he's a player that's 25 years old,
02:45the same age as Zion Williamson,
02:47who's just finishing up his fifth year in the NBA.
02:50So, all of a sudden, you have these super, super, super seniors
02:54that are taking advantage of the system
02:57by making more money in college.
02:58Because, is Chad Baker-Mazzaro going to be a good pro?
03:01Maybe? Doubtful? I don't know.
03:03But there's plenty of really, really good college players
03:06that aren't going to be pros
03:07that are just maximizing the amount of money
03:09that they can make in their career,
03:11which, would you blame him?
03:12Probably not.
03:13Well, I blame the NCAA for that.
03:15Listen, man, we got some guys that had COVID
03:18for like five years now.
03:21Like, listen, I think there should be a max
03:24you can be in college, probably five years.
03:27You can't stay in college forever.
03:30Even if you're making money.
03:31I don't think it's fair.
03:32You can't have 25-year-olds playing against 17, 18-year-olds.
03:36I don't think that's healthy.
03:39I mean, the COVID thing is over, first and foremost.
03:42But, there's two problems in this whole thing.
03:46Think about this, Molly.
03:48Of every sports league in the world,
03:50in the entire world, think about that,
03:53overseas, wherever,
03:55college sports is the only league in the world
03:57that don't have a salary cap.
03:59That's ridiculous.
04:00Think about that.
04:00Yeah.
04:01Every single sports league in the world
04:04has a salary cap,
04:06except the NIL.
04:09That's the first problem.
04:10And secondly,
04:12they get to renegotiate.
04:13Like, if people get to renegotiate,
04:15I want to renegotiate every year.
