You know, it's so screwed up the way it is now, Smiley.
00:04
You're going to have a different team every year,
00:06
and, you know, kids are just going to the highest bidder now,
00:10
so you don't know what players you're going to have until the season starts.
00:14
You know, I played golf with Coach Saban recently,
00:16
and that guy I admire and respect the hell out of him,
00:19
but he's the greatest college football coach ever.
00:21
And, you know, just talk about ways to fix the sport.
00:25
I don't know what you're going to do,
00:26
because I don't know how you're going to be able to put the toothpaste back in the tube.
00:32
And, you know, he was picking my brain because I want to fix it
00:37
because my thing is we have screwed up college sports
00:41
for like 1% of the players who probably should be getting paid.
00:45
Yeah, but the other 99% are getting a free education,
00:50
which is the most important aspect from where I look at it,
00:53
because most of these kids are black kids.
00:55
And I want them to get that free education because it's a big deal.
01:00
But because some guys who are not getting paid,
01:03
and I'm not opposed to players getting paid,
01:05
but not the numbers they're getting paid,
01:06
because that's an unsustainable business model.
01:09
To come up with $10, $20, $30 million every year.
01:13
And basketball, the thing that sucks about basketball, Smiley,
01:17
if I'm going to pay, I have to pay a kid millions of dollars
01:20
to be at Auburn for six months.
01:21
I'm not getting any return on my investment.
01:25
That makes zero sense.
01:27
At least in football, you get a great player.
01:29
You can pay him for three years.
01:30
He's there.
01:32
But to pay a basketball player millions of dollars
01:36
to be at Auburn for six months.
01:38
And, like, Cooper Flagg is amazing.
01:41
Like, he got Duke to the final four, which is incredible.
01:47
But, like, if you're going to pay guys millions and millions of dollars,
01:50
you've got to at least get a championship out of it.
01:53
And he just wanted...
01:54
You can't guarantee it.
01:56
You can't guarantee it.
01:57
And he is phenomenal.
01:58
I cannot wait to see Cooper Flagg in the NBA.
02:01
And they had a bunch of NBA players.
02:03
I think...
02:04
I forget the kid from...
02:06
He went to Charlotte.
02:09
Can't think of his name.
02:10
He had the kid who went to the...
02:11
They had three NBA players.
02:13
And they didn't even win the whole thing.
02:15
So, I just don't understand how we're going to fix this thing.
02:19
It's going to be very interesting in the next few years.
02:22
Well, even, too, the last thing I'll kind of touch on
02:25
with this college and NBA stuff, too,
02:28
is that you have a player like Chad Baker-Mazzaro,
02:30
who's one of the best players at Auburn over the last couple of years.
02:34
He obviously was up for a renegotiation process,
02:37
ends up taking more money,
02:39
or allegedly takes more money and goes to USC.
02:42
Reminder that he's a player that's 25 years old,
02:45
the same age as Zion Williamson,
02:47
who's just finishing up his fifth year in the NBA.
02:50
So, all of a sudden, you have these super, super, super seniors
02:54
that are taking advantage of the system
02:57
by making more money in college.
02:58
Because, is Chad Baker-Mazzaro going to be a good pro?
03:01
Maybe? Doubtful? I don't know.
03:03
But there's plenty of really, really good college players
03:06
that aren't going to be pros
03:07
that are just maximizing the amount of money
03:09
that they can make in their career,
03:11
which, would you blame him?
03:12
Probably not.
03:13
Well, I blame the NCAA for that.
03:15
Listen, man, we got some guys that had COVID
03:18
for like five years now.
03:21
Like, listen, I think there should be a max
03:24
you can be in college, probably five years.
03:27
You can't stay in college forever.
03:30
Even if you're making money.
03:31
I don't think it's fair.
03:32
You can't have 25-year-olds playing against 17, 18-year-olds.
03:36
I don't think that's healthy.
03:39
I mean, the COVID thing is over, first and foremost.
03:42
But, there's two problems in this whole thing.
03:46
Think about this, Molly.
03:48
Of every sports league in the world,
03:50
in the entire world, think about that,
03:53
overseas, wherever,
03:55
college sports is the only league in the world
03:57
that don't have a salary cap.
03:59
That's ridiculous.
04:00
Think about that.
04:00
Yeah.
04:01
Every single sports league in the world
04:04
has a salary cap,
04:06
except the NIL.
04:09
That's the first problem.
04:10
And secondly,
04:12
they get to renegotiate.
04:13
Like, if people get to renegotiate,
04:15
I want to renegotiate every year.
