00:00Welcome to the fourth installment of the EasyPT series.
00:15Until now, we have already learned about the verbs and alt tenses.
00:20Now it's time to understand what are active and passive voices.
00:24Allow me, your host on the EduTrainXPT Learning Channel,
00:27we pioneer in PT training to cover this topic of English grammar
00:31in the simplest way possible.
00:34The sentences that we make comprise three elements,
00:38subject, verb and object.
00:40I am going to cover the subject, verb, object topic in detail
00:44in my next video on the PT grammar series.
00:46But for now, you should know that a subject is something
00:49that performs an action.
00:51For example, Tom cooks chicken.
00:55Tom is the subject as he is performing some action.
00:59Cook, which is the verb.
01:01And chicken is the object that receives the action from the subject.
01:05So these sentences are what we normally speak
01:08and are called as active voices.
01:11In active voices, the subject of the sentences perform the action.
01:16So active voices focus on the subject.
01:21Whereas the passive voice doesn't focus on the subject.
01:24It focuses on the object.
01:26If I say, the chicken was cooked by Tom, this is passive voice.
01:31The subject here, Tom, is actually receiving an action.
01:35That's the basic difference between active and passive voices.
01:39So when is passive voice used?
01:41It is used for impersonal writing, formal, traditional or scientific writing.
01:46For example, a new research was done by scientists recently.
01:51But passive voices are a little unclear, difficult to read and make longer sentences.
01:57These are the problems in the passive voice and you should try to use active voice wherever possible.
02:04Let's see some examples on the screen now.
02:07See how active and passive voice changes depending on past, present and future tenses.
02:14Watch closely how every time in passive voice simple past tense is used.
02:20Tom cooks the dinner.
02:22The dinner was cooked by Tom.
02:24That's present.
02:25Now, Tom cooked the dinner.
02:27The dinner was cooked by Tom.
02:29Past tense.
02:30Now, Tom will cook the dinner.
02:32The dinner will be cooked by Tom.
02:35Similarly, in continuous form, Tom is cooking the dinner.
02:38The dinner is being cooked by Tom.
02:41Tom was cooking the dinner.
02:43The dinner was being cooked by Tom.
02:45Tom will be cooking the dinner.
02:48but there is no passive voice for future continuous.
02:51So now you understand how active and passive voice changes according to the present, past
02:57and future choices.
02:58With this, we complete the active and passive voices.
03:02In the next grammar video, we are going to cover a very important topic, subject, verb
03:07and object in detail and this is very important if you want to do well in your reorder paragraph
03:12questions.
