New Seacroft council housing scheme pays tribute to sporting hero

A new council housing development in Seacroft is bringing high-quality affordable homes and a champion tribute to a sporting hero of yesteryear to a Leeds community.

00:03The Doris Story House apartment building in Seacroft forms part of Leeds City Council's Housing Growth Programme,

00:10with all 33 new homes at Brooklands Avenue, available for affordable rent,

00:15providing a welcome boost for an area with significant housing demand.

00:2025 one-bedroom apartments and 8 two- and three-bedroom houses have been built on brownfield land

00:26and have been named in honour of the East Leeds swimmer Doris Story,

00:30who was just 19 when she won two gold medals at the Empire Games of 1938 in Sydney.

00:37Two of Doris's grandchildren, brothers Darren and Damien Quornby,

00:41were joined by senior councillors and other stakeholders

00:44for an event celebrating the imminent completion of the scheme.

00:49Construction Group Waits have carried out a wide-ranging community engagement programme in Seacroft

00:54since work began on the development in late 2023.

00:58They've connected with more than 1,330 local students via school activities,

01:04work experience, site visits and other initiatives,

01:07and supported the Seacroft Community on Top Group with a £10,000 grant.

01:13Their team have also volunteered over 100 hours to lend a hand

01:16at the Seacroft Forest Garden Community Green Space.

01:20More than 350 new homes have been built via the Council's Growth Programme since 2018,

01:26and more than 450 homes have also been acquired as part of the programme.

01:31Locations where new homes have recently been delivered include

01:34Barncroft Close in Seacroft and Scottshall Drive in Chapel Allerton,

01:38as well as a site in Middleton, formerly occupied by Throssell Recreation Ground

01:42and Middleton Skills Centre.
