00:00Five shipping containers, declared to be carrying electronic components, were instead found to be carrying about 5.3 million ringgit worth of copper scrap during a customs department inspection at the North Butterworth Container Terminal.
00:14Penang Customs Department Director Datuk Rohaizad Ali said enforcement officers found shreds and tubes of copper, and heaps of printed circuit board, weighing a total of 125 tons when they opened the containers, which originated from Thailand.
00:30Copper scrap, classified as prohibited and subjected to the Customs Order, Import Prohibition, 2023, requires a permit from Sirim.
00:39Two local men and a woman, who are owners of a company and an agent, aged between 40 and 60, have been arrested to facilitate investigations.
00:48In a separate case, Rohaizad said the department had crippled a contraband cigarette and liquor smuggling syndicate in early August, seizing nearly 439,000 sticks of cigarettes and over 1,300 litres of liquor.
01:02The seizure followed a raid at a residential unit in Padangsirai, Kedah, which was believed to be used to store the prohibited items.
