00:00You'll then get a couple of days off, you then may go on to late turns, 2 till 10 at night or even later actually sometimes from late afternoon up until 2am and then many staff work overnight as well. Bank holidays are all incorporated in the roster and we do that 364 days a year.
00:20We're only a few days into the London wide tube strike and yet consequences for commuters and the public are already significant.
00:31The strike which has left London with virtually no tube services has brought the city to a standstill and has demonstrated just how vital the London underground network is to the capital.
00:47The strike was called because of a dispute over pay and a reduction in the working week.
00:54TfL has offered a 3.4% pay rise but not a reduction in the working hours because it says this would be unaffordable.
01:05Joe Ryle, the campaign director of the Four Day Week Foundation said that they offer their full support to the RMT for a 32 hour working week.
01:16He added every union that takes action to secure a shorter working week brings the four day week closer to reality for everyone saying it's a bold and necessary stand and in reference to the striking workers said they deserve widespread support.
01:35Mr Ryle added that the five day week was a century old model that no longer reflects how we live and work today suggesting we were long overdue an update.
01:50Well look, we've made it really clear to TfL and LUL in every negotiating meeting that we've been in that what we're asking them to do is to make some real progress towards that.
02:00We're not saying they've got to deliver that in one year. If they want to talk about a longer term deal, we can talk about that.
02:06But otherwise we want to see some real progress towards that shorter working week, some better quality time off for people to recover.
02:13Well I don't think we are greedy. Every day the people that work for London Underground are generating £50 million for the London economy.
02:22And what we're asking for is a tiny fraction of what we create in value for London.
02:29Thank you for London.
