02:01Over the years, Holiday developed a bad boy notoriety, which turned off parents but just endeared him more to their children.
02:10As time went on, his reputation grew more and more scandalous.
02:13Alcohol, drugs, girlfriends, multiple marriages.
02:17He never denied any of it.
02:18And in fact, the gossipy stories just bounced off Holiday and seemed to enhance his career.
02:23Many times people said, that's it, that's the last straw.
02:28This is the thing that's going to stop his career.
02:31And it was never more evident than in the 90s, when on the front page, Johnny Holiday has a cocaine problem.
02:39His record company was worried and they thought, this is it, you know, Johnny is not gonna...
02:46But he always, the people regroup, he has this army of fans.
02:52Some of them have seen him hundreds of times.
02:55This is incredible.
02:56You have people who really follow his tours from city to city.
03:00And it was the tours Johnny and Johnny's fans looked for.
03:04He loved the live audiences and went on nearly 200 concert tours, playing not only the big cities, but to the jubilation and delight of his fans, he always managed to include small towns as well.
03:15If there was a disappointment for Holiday, it was that he could never seem to transfer his appeal outside the French-speaking world.
03:25He tried recording in English and going on tour in the Anglo-Saxon countries, but only with limited success.
03:35It didn't matter.
03:37In his homeland, Johnny Holiday was a legend.
03:39So much so that, when it came time to commemorate the first anniversary of the terrorist attack at Charlie Hebdo, organizers chose Halliday to sing in tribute.
03:49Johnny Halliday, a rock and roller whose career was woven into the life of France for more than a half century.
