00:00The President of the United States and the United States
00:11Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro praised on Thursday the role of the civic military union to guarantee peace and security in the country.
00:18Several members, countries of the community and Latin American and Caribbean states CELAC signed a joint document strongly rejecting the United States military deployment in the Caribbean Sea.
00:35And the devastating magnitude 6.0 earthquake that struck eastern Afghanistan last Sunday has claimed the lives of more than 2,200 people and left nearly 3,600 injured.
00:53Hello and welcome to From the South. My name is Belén de los Santos. I'm from Atesor Studios in Havana, Cuba. We begin with the news.
01:05We now begin with the information.
01:18Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro praised on Thursday the role of the civic military union to guarantee peace and security in the country.
01:26The remarks were made during the establishment of basic units for territorial organization in the communes, also known as peace squadrons, where he also announced the activation on Friday of the first cycle of the Bolivarian national militia as part of the country's defense strategy.
01:44The head of state also announced that a digital permanent enlistment procedure will be implemented across the nation.
01:51President Maduro affirmed that the Bolivarian nation was at the forefront of the struggle for peace among the peoples of the South.
01:59So, from North to South, from East to the West, the homeland is blessed, satisfied, and we are going to guarantee territory by territory of peace.
02:14Attention.
02:16Attention.
02:17Governors, women and men, majors, in a perfect popular military and police fusion, attention, Bolivarian armed forces, police forces of the country.
02:33There is our goal, and I want to see very soon the declaration in the practice, the guarantees in the practice of 335 municipalities, territory of peace of the Republic, and of the 24-state territory of peace.
02:52Venezuela is a free territory in the face of any aggression from the U.S. Empire.
03:05And we continue in Venezuela because the nation's attorney general, Tarek William Saab, has categorically denied an alleged attack by the United States against a Venezuelan vessel in the Caribbean Sea.
03:16The highest authority of the Venezuelan public prosecutor's office described the information as an attempt to create internal instability in the country and also pointed out some inconsistencies in the U.S. account of the event.
03:29Although Saab emphasized that this incident did not occur, he highlighted that such operations should seek the detention of the involved criminals, not their elimination without due process or defense.
03:46And member states of the community of Latin American and Caribbean states alike issued a statement on Friday strongly rejecting the extra-regional military presence in the region.
03:58They said that Latin America and the Caribbean have been proclaimed a zone of peace based on principles such as the prescription of the use, the threat or use of force, the restricted respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity, the non-interference in the internal affairs of the state.
04:17The statement continues by saying that they reaffirm their will to combat them as a priority, enhancing regional and international cooperation and coordination within the framework of respect for international law and in compliance with existing legal frameworks and international conventions.
04:37The statement also continues stating that the slack countries signing this declaration call for the promotion of a secure environment and reiterate their firm commitment to defending peace, stability, democracy and development throughout the region.
04:54Prior to his visit to Ecuador, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio was in Mexico to address issues on their common agenda.
05:05Our correspondent in Mexico City, Daniel Rosas, with the details.
05:10Mexico and the United States advanced in an understanding of cooperation in the areas of migration, trade and, above all, security.
05:18A high-level group is being formed, which in fact has already met for the first time in Washington, and the idea is that there will be permanent, daily meetings between both governments, through the secretaries of state, to give continuity to this cooperation program.
05:37This mechanism of understanding, called the border security and law enforcement cooperation program, establishes concrete steps.
05:46This includes measures to counteract illicit financial flows, the flow of illegal fuel, the arrest of generators of violence, and the trafficking of illicit drugs and weapons, each in their own territory.
06:07But there is still much to be done, and we both understand that the cartels are a threat to the national security of Mexico and the United States, so it makes perfect sense to cooperate and work together.
06:26The meeting comes hours after Donald Trump, in an interview, praised the Mexican president, only to later assure that she does not accept the intervention of U.S. soldiers for fear of the Mexican cartels.
06:37This statement he made is not true, but we chose to keep the good relationship. I also thank you for the nice mention you made of me.
06:51Statements such as this, of supposedly attacking criminal groups to justify an intervention, opened the door to meddling, considers this specialist.
06:58On the one hand, a very alarmist discourse is being used about the supposed narco-terrorism that organizations such as the so-called Sinalo Cartel or the Jalisco New Generation Cartel would exercise.
07:12And on a second level, the response given to this is a supposedly accurate militarization sending United States troops to Mexico.
07:19This is a way for Washington to exert pressure on Mexico, and it also unmasks Donald Trump's double talk, he adds.
07:30President Trump, who came, moreover, into office saying he would not get involved in external conflicts, on the contrary, has had a very hostile behavior.
07:44This is a form of failed diplomacy, considers Zavala.

08:17Welcome back to From the South.
08:21On Thursday, rhetories from the Ecuadorian Social Security Institute mobilized in several cities across the country to reject the draft law on strengthening and sustaining credit.
08:33In Quito, protesters gathered in front of the National Assembly, while in other provinces, demonstrators protested in front of government buildings and regional headquarters of the Institute.
08:43They warned that President Daniel Novoa's initiative could turn the Institute's bank into a political and financial tool, weakening an institution built on years of contributions from workers.
08:56Among their main demands are greater transparency in the management of funds, guarantees for current and future pensions, and the participation of members and rhetories in decisions that affect their social security.
09:13And Panamanian workers rejected the government policies, rescribing them as neoliberal because they generate poverty and inequality.
09:25This way, the Workers' Central of Panama condemned the measures taken by the administration of President José Raúl Molino,
09:32denouncing recent data showing that one in five Panamanians currently lives in extreme poverty, with indigenous populations being the most impacted in terms of their demographic.
09:44Furthermore, the union emphasized that current incomes are not enough to cover basic needs, and assured that it will continue fighting for social, economic, and labor improvements and defending the right of Panamanians to a participative and inclusive democracy that allows for true economic development.
10:03In other news, Costa Rica's President Rodrigo Chávez's political future could be decided on September 22nd, when the Legislative Assembly discusses lifting his immunity.
10:21The date was agreed upon on Thursday at a meeting of faction leaders and was proposed by the President of Congress, Rodrigo Arias.
10:29The session is subject to the President's availability, he has the right to attend, and is allotted 30 minutes to present his defense before the plenary.
10:39According to the legislative resolution, the final decision will be made during a single session in which deputies will begin discussing the lifting of presidential immunity,
10:49a process that will require a minimum of 38 votes in favor.
10:59In other news, the Thai parliament has confirmed the election of Anutin Shan Vedakul as prime minister.
11:07The political leader of the conservative opposition Bum Hai Thai party had remained the favorite to fill the position.
11:14Anutin won with 311 votes, more than the 247 that were needed for a majority among the 492 active members of the House of Representatives.
11:26Anutin will replace Payetong Tang Shinavatra of the ruling Peltai party, who was dismissed by the Constitutional Court last month over an ethics scandal.
11:38In this context, Anutin has pledged to dissolve parliament within four months and hold a referendum on constitutional amendments
11:47in an attempt to address the nation's mounting political challenges.
11:51Chinese President Xi Jinping and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un met in Beijing on Thursday,
12:04pledging mutual support and enhanced cooperation, according to state media from both countries.
12:10The talks took place at the Great Hall of the People following a commemoration ceremony marking the end of World War II.
12:17The meeting came a day after Kim attended a major Chinese military parade alongside other foreign leaders,
12:24including Russian President Vladimir Putin.
12:26During the discussions, Xi and Kim were joined by top officials from the respective governments,
12:32underscoring the close diplomatic ties between the nations.
12:36Xi highlighted the traditional friendship between China and North Korea,
12:40and pledged to consolidate and boost relations.
12:47And in Russia, the second day of the 10th Eastern Economic Forum was held in the city of Vladivostok,
12:57with President Vladimir Putin in attendance.
12:59Representatives from 70 countries are meeting this Friday at this important platform,
13:04whose primary objective is to promote economic development
13:08and strengthen friendly ties and cooperation among the participating nations.
13:13At the inauguration that took place on Thursday,
13:17the Russian head of state highlighted the valuable opportunity to discover
13:21the unique potential of the Russian for East.
13:24In this context, during his speech, President Putin reaffirmed that peace guarantees to be worked out
13:30for his country and Ukraine should be respected by Moscow if agreements are reached.
13:36If such agreements are reached, let no one doubt that Russia will implement them in full.
13:48We will respect those security guarantees that, of course,
13:52must be developed for both Russia and Ukraine.
13:55I will repeat once again, of course, Russia will fulfill these agreements.
14:00But, in any case, no one has discussed this with us at a serious level yet.

15:01Welcome back to From the South.
15:03At this moment, we go to Palestine.
15:06A new investigation based on classified data from an Israeli military database
15:10has revealed that most of the Palestinian detainees from Gaza in Israeli jails
15:15are civilians held without charge or trial.
15:19The investigation based on this classified Israeli military data
15:23reveals that many Palestinians from Gaza held in Israeli prisons without charge or trial
15:28include medical workers, teachers, civil servants, media workers, writers, and also sick people, disabled, and also children.
15:38In this context, in May of this year, the database recorded 1,450 detainees marked as arrested,
15:47representing just one in four of all Palestinians from Gaza identified as fighters.
15:53At the time, Israel had detained around 6,000 people under its unlawful combatants law,
16:01which permits indefinite imprisonment without charge or trial.
16:05In Iran's foreign minister, Abbas Argachi reaffirmed the country's commitment to supporting
16:17the Palestinian people's legitimate resistance against Israeli occupation.
16:22During a meeting with Hamas political bureau members in Doha, Qatar, on Thursday,
16:28Argachi highlighted the urgent need for regional countries and the international community
16:33to take concerted action to halt the genocide.
16:36In this context, a top Iranian diplomat called for a coordinated effort among Islamic nations
16:42to end the genocide in Gaza, deliver humanitarian aid to those affected,
16:46and hold Israeli leaders accountable for their actions.
16:52We continue now with other topics.
16:57Violent clashes over a land dispute in farming communities across Ghana's Savannah region
17:03have forced thousands of residents to seek refuge in makeshift camps.
17:10The communal conflict, which began late last month, has led to widespread displacement
17:15as local populations flee their homes to escape the unrest.
17:19Officials reported on Thursday that the clashes have resulted in at least 31 deaths
17:25and displaced nearly 50,000 people.
17:29In addition to those sheltering inside Ghana, more than 13,000 individuals have crossed into
17:35neighboring Ivory Coast to find safety, highlighting the regional impact of the ongoing violence.
17:49The devastating magnitude 6.0 earthquake that struck eastern Afghanistan last Sunday
18:03has claimed the lives of more than 2,200 people and left 3,600 injured as well.
18:09The Afghan government continues rescue efforts and has confirmed the recovery of hundreds of bodies
18:15from the rubble of collapsed houses, several aftershocks have rattled Kabul,
18:19and the Pakistani capital Islamabad, the strongest, was recorded on Friday morning,
18:26measuring 5.6 in the Richter scale.
18:29In this context, the delivery of emergency humanitarian aid
18:33and the setting up of temporary shelters for displaced people is being organized,
18:39while the World Health Organization has called for more funds to provide health care and disease surveillance,
18:45underscoring the urgent need for international support.
18:52Precisely in this context, the government of Russia and China have allocated resources destined for Afghanistan
18:59to aid in the aftermath of the seismic event.
19:03Precisely, the Russian emergency ministry informed on Friday that a cargo plane had brought 20 tons of food items to Kabul,
19:12following an order by President Vladimir Putin.
19:15Meanwhile, the China International Development Cooperation Agency unveiled it would provide some 7 million U.S. dollars
19:22in emergency humanitarian aid, including urgently needed supplies such as tents, blankets, and food as well.
19:29The packages from the allied nations will support ongoing disaster relief efforts in the country's hardest-hit areas.
19:37And the border territories of Punjab and India and Pakistan have been affected by intense monsoon rains
19:54that have caused flooding and landslides.
19:57The Indian Meteorological Department reported that the rainfall left more than 43 people dead,
20:03nearly 2,000 villages affected, and about 162,000 hectares of agricultural land destroyed.
20:11Meanwhile, on the Pakistani border, the Provincial Disaster Management Authority of the Department
20:16revealed that 46 people have died due to the rains that also left more than 3.5 million people affected
20:25and at least 4,000 settlements flooded.
20:27Meteorological Departments forecast continued rainfall, complicating the climate outlook for both nations.
20:45And we go now to the Americas, as the National Meteorological Service of Mexico reported on Thursday
20:52that meteorological phenomenon, Lorena had downgraded to a post-tropical cyclone,
20:58changing its trajectory to move along the coast of South Lower California.
21:03Authorities warned the risk of life-threatening flash flooding continues for Baja California Sur and Sonora
21:11through Friday despite the deviation.
21:14In this regard, its maximum sustained winds have decreased to near 55 km per hour with higher gusts.
21:23The weather is expected to begin improving over the weekend with clear skies
21:28and a gradual increase in temperatures being forecasted.
21:32And like this, we have come to the end of this news brief.
