UPDATE ON THE HOTTEST SHOWS AT THE MOMENT.
Transcript
00:01We did go through quite a few dogs.
00:04We found you a match.
00:07She certainly ticks the fun box.
00:10It isn't just one chihuahua.
00:12It's a trio.
00:14Oh my God!
00:16She's five months old.
00:18It's a Jack Russell.
00:20His name is Mushy.
00:25In a quiet corner of the English countryside,
00:28there's a place for those looking for love.
00:31There is only one chance at life.
00:34And I'm missing the dog. Good girl.
00:36Here, a dedicated team match abandoned dogs.
00:39You've been through a rough time, haven't you?
00:41It's okay, buddy.
00:43With hopeful new owners.
00:45We can trot together! Let's trot!
00:47A lot of people come to us when they're at a crossroads.
00:51I lost five years of my memory
00:53and I don't think they will ever come back.
00:56And they're putting their trust in us.
01:01Last spring, we installed fixed rig cameras.
01:04Thank you!
01:05Additional support staff.
01:07Do you have any golden retrievers?
01:09We have 20.
01:10And a secluded meeting pen.
01:12Oh, nice.
01:13It's locked in here.
01:14To see how lives could be changed forever.
01:17With the perfect match.
01:19Oh, my God!
01:20Oh!
01:21Oh!
01:22You've given him the zoomies.
01:23Some connections happen in a heartbeat.
01:27Hello, we're here.
01:29Are you trying to help you?
01:30Are you trying to help you?
01:31I don't know.
01:32But for some, it can take time.
01:37When people connect with a dog.
01:39You're very effective.
01:40It's not through looks or a type.
01:42It's through a feeling.
01:46That first time, the tip of the tail wags.
01:48You just get a little flutter of hope.
01:50I love them.
01:51You know they're a keeper.
02:02Come on, Nala.
02:03Come on.
02:04Hello.
02:05Oh, we're going to find your friend, Nala.
02:07Yeah, we're going to find your friend.
02:08What can you smell?
02:12This is Nala.
02:13She's one of a kind of a dog.
02:15Do you have a run in my hair?
02:16Yes, we are.
02:17Good girl.
02:18She is a boxer.
02:19You've got to watch out, because you don't know when she can.
02:22Come on, step.
02:24Here to find a new best friend, with her humans in tow, is five-year-old Nala from Newcastle.
02:34Come on.
02:35Hiya.
02:36Hiya.
02:37Welcome to Budgree.
02:38Hi.
02:39Hi.
02:40So, I'm Alicia.
02:41Hello.
02:42Nice to meet you.
02:43Hello.
02:44Chris.
02:45Finn.
02:46Nala.
02:47Nala!
02:48I think she's just...
02:49Because she can't see, she's wondering what we are.
02:51She's wondering, right?
02:52Yeah.
02:53What?
02:54Is she blind?
02:55Completely.
02:56She's got no eyes.
02:57You didn't even notice, did you?
02:58Oh, no.
02:59She didn't.
03:00Nala is still as nosy as she was when she had eyes, but now she crashes into everything
03:05instead.
03:06Are we here for a pal for Nala?
03:07Yeah.
03:08We are, yes.
03:09What would you say she's like?
03:10She's definitely daddy's baby.
03:12Yeah.
03:13I never used to be a dog lover though, did I?
03:15Not really.
03:16Not at all.
03:17What did you do the first night we got Nala?
03:19I think put her on in the bed.
03:21In the middle between me and Susie.
03:23What are the logistics of a boxer in your bed?
03:25You buy your bigger bed.
03:27Shall we get you sat down and someone will be over and have a chat with you shall?
03:32Come on Nala.
03:37Hiya, the straight here now, just at the front of the welcome centre.
03:40No worries, thank you very much.
03:42A young Pomeranian has arrived at Wood Green after being found by a member of the public.
03:49Hiya, who have we got here?
03:51So we've been calling him Fox.
03:52Okay.
03:53Found him in my horse's field yesterday and at first thought he was a fox.
03:57He was rigid with fear.
03:59He was so scared that I thought I just wanted to take him to the vet to get checked over.
04:03Vet thinks he's around two years old, riddled with fleas.
04:08He's not lead trained, not house trained.
04:10Doesn't really know normal things, yeah.
04:11Definitely confirm those two things.
04:13Well, thank you for bringing him in and for helping him.
04:15We'll look after him.
04:17Come on then.
04:22I hate the idea that anybody out there would purposefully abandon their dog for whatever reason.
04:30Good boy, I'm a sister, Lynn.
04:32To actually take them somewhere and leave them to fend for themselves, it's really heartbreaking
04:38and you try not to think about what that dog must have gone through,
04:44because that just hurts too much.
04:46Are you all right, Bert? Shall we get you to help?
04:49We just know that as soon as they're within our care, they're safe.
04:54Good boy.
04:56He's very scared at the minute and probably in a bit of a state of shock as well.
05:00So coming to a new place with all these new sounds, they are going to sort of cling to what they know as safety,
05:06which for him is this crate at the minute.
05:08So we'll just let him come out really nice and slow.
05:10Good boy, darling.
05:11Well done.
05:12Good boy.
05:13Well done.
05:14Good boy.
05:15Well done.
05:16When I do reach out to try and stroke him really gently, he is backing away.
05:30He is a little bit worried, so obviously we won't push that.
05:33We'll just take it at his pace really and just slowly start building up that trust and that bond with him.
05:39Good boy, darling.
05:41So brave.
05:42Well done.
05:47Come see you later, yeah?
05:49Oh, who's this?
05:55Nala.
05:56I can see obviously she is blind.
05:59She is, yes.
06:00Has she been like that since you got her?
06:02No, just a few months now.
06:04About six months ago, one of her eyes went white and they couldn't do anything for that eye.
06:11But then suddenly the other eye, the right eye, started to go as well.
06:19She was in pain.
06:20They said there's nothing we can actually do.
06:22She's gone completely blind now.
06:24So the only option really was to get her eyes removed and take the pain away.
06:29But even though we knew that was the really only option, it was still horrible.
06:32Yeah, of course.
06:34And you still feel guilty.
06:36So it was a big shock, but actually you think it was the best thing you could have done for her.
06:41Oh, definitely.
06:43Has that affected their personality at all?
06:45She's a lot more cuddly, but she's also a lot more anxious.
06:49She likes to lie on your leg or like lie close to you just so she knows that you're there.
06:53Yeah.
06:56It's like she's lost that spark that used to make her that bit crazier.
07:00This is just Nala doing zoomies.
07:03You'd let her off the leader and she'd just run round and round for ages.
07:06You'd walk back to the house and she would just collapse on the floor.
07:09She'd lie there with a smile on her face and you can tell it's a proper smile.
07:16She's lost a lot of her confidence, do you think?
07:18Yeah.
07:19Nala wants to do all the things she used to do, but can't quite learn how to play properly.
07:27If Nala could even do half zoomies, I feel like my heart would burst open.
07:33It's like winning the lottery.
07:36Finn, what kind of dog do you think Nala would really like as a companion?
07:40Would she like a play?
07:41A playful, protective, happy dog.
07:45That's really lovely.
07:46So a dog that will maybe understand that she can't see and help her.
07:51Yeah.
07:52So you're not really that worried about breed.
07:53It's more about the personality being the right fit for Nala.
07:56Yeah.
07:57Understood.
07:58OK, we'll go away and have a look at the dog.
07:59So hang tight.
08:00Yes.
08:01See you in a bit soon.
08:02Bye.
08:03Nala.
08:04Have you got a dog in mind?
08:07We do have coconut.
08:08I love that little boy.
08:11Well, he's not so little.
08:15And he's not puppy puppy, he's five months old.
08:18He'll definitely give Nala that confidence and that playful spark back.
08:24And I think Nala can then show him a thing or two and be a good role model as well.
08:30I think it's just a match made in heaven.
08:32This is coconut.
08:35And he arrived to Woodgreen as a stray.
08:38It could be that he needs a lot more attention than someone's able to give him,
08:43because he can be quite a needy boy.
08:45I love his big bat ears.
08:49He has still got a lot of learning to do.
08:52He's in his adolescent phase, so he's going to have some naughty teenage habits.
08:56But it's important that people have the patience for him as well.
09:00Coconut just enjoys playing with other dogs.
09:04Good boy.
09:06A home with coconut is probably going to be a lot of fun.
09:09We might have found you a friend, Nala.
09:15How would she feel about a brother?
09:18Nala, what about a brother?
09:20A boyfriend?
09:21Do you want to know his name?
09:23It's coconut.
09:26Coconut?
09:27Which might give you a little clue as to what colour he is.
09:32Is he white and fluffy by any chance?
09:34A little bit fluffy.
09:35A little bit.
09:36How old is he then?
09:38He's five months.
09:40Oh!
09:41He's a baby!
09:42At five months old, he's not got a fixed idea about what other dogs should be like
09:46and how they should respond to him, so actually growing up with a blind dog,
09:49he's not going to know any different.
09:51Yeah, I hadn't ever thought about it like that, yeah.
09:53I don't think we should know the breed.
09:55Should we keep the breed as soon?
09:56Yeah.
09:57Not small, it's not huge.
09:58I know you've got all this talk, but I just want to meet and run.
10:01Well, I won't keep you waiting too long then.
10:05OK.
10:06I'm going to take Nala down and then you shall see what coconut is.
10:10He's only a baby, so you have to be nice.
10:13Right, we're going to do step.
10:16Step.
10:18There we go.
10:20I think if Nala had lost a leg, I wouldn't faz us half as much as what
10:27our losing our eyes have because our eyes are really part of our personality
10:33and taking that away is like taking a bit of her away.
10:40Right, this big ramp here.
10:41This way.
10:42That's it.
10:44I couldn't look at her.
10:45Honestly, I couldn't look at her when she had her operation done.
10:48Not for the first few days because it just didn't look like Nala.
10:52We're going to go through the door?
10:54I had never seen Chris as...
10:57..heartbroken.
11:02Oh, oh, you're gay!
11:05There was a big old post there.
11:06I couldn't imagine what it's like for her.
11:08Terrified would be my thought.
11:11To go from seeing everything to complete darkness.
11:18I'm hoping that another dog can show her how to experience the world
11:22in a way that we can't.
11:26I'm going to meet new friends!
11:27And give Nala the insight to what kind of world's still out there.
11:32We want her to have every opportunity to enjoy life
11:36as much as she physically can.
11:39Give me your best behaviour.
11:43Oh!
11:44Hi!
11:45Hello!
11:46My goodness!
11:47Yes!
11:48Oh!
11:49Who's this?
11:50He's so lovely!
11:51Good girl!
11:52Who's that?
11:53Do you want to say hello?
11:54Very keen to say hello.
11:55Oh!
11:56Yeah, she is!
11:57Nala's blind, so she can't read any body language.
12:00Right.
12:01Oh, she's trying to find him!
12:02Yeah, he's there!
12:03Oh, are you trying to back away?
12:04Oh!
12:05Are you trying to back away?
12:06Oh!
12:07Oh!
12:08Oh!
12:09Oh!
12:10Oh!
12:11Oh!
12:12Oh!
12:13Oh!
12:14Oh!
12:15Oh!
12:16Oh!
12:17Oh!
12:18Oh!
12:19Oh!
12:20Oh!
12:21Oh!
12:22Oh!
12:23Are you trying to back away?
12:24Oh!
12:25Oh, I think Coconut's a bit worried.
12:26A little bit worried.
12:27Yeah.
12:28Shall we give him a bit of space?
12:29He's not going to hurt you.
12:30She's really nice.
12:31She just can't see you.
12:32I know.
12:33You're all right.
12:34Do you think he's a bit scared of her?
12:36Yeah.
12:37Yeah.
12:38Yeah.
12:39I think he's just not sure.
12:40Not sure.
12:41Not sure.
12:42You might not understand that she's blind.
12:43Are you OK?
12:44Is he all right?
12:45It's difficult for her, I guess, because she can't see where he is.
12:47No.
12:48She has to get really close to know he's there.
12:49Oh, bless her.
12:50It's OK.
12:51She just wants to know.
12:52You're not sure, are you?
12:57I think she likes him.
12:59I just think he's a bit unsure.
13:02I think it would be great to get the family down.
13:04Yes.
13:05Just to see what they think.
13:06Do you want to go and see?
13:08Let's go!
13:10How's that going?
13:11Biggs.
13:12Biggs, right?
13:13Obviously, you brought up matching dogs.
13:14Yeah.
13:15Obviously.
13:16Have you ever tried humans?
13:17No, but I would love to.
13:18But I can't...
13:19I should be your experiment.
13:20What are you after?
13:21Everything.
13:22Anything.
13:23Everything.
13:24Not anything.
13:25God!
13:26I don't know, but I would love to.
13:28But I can't... I should be your experiment.
13:30What are you after?
13:32Everything.
13:33Anything.
13:34Everything, not anything. God!
13:44Oh!
13:45Do you think there's a doggo waiting for us?
13:47We're actually here.
13:48I know.
13:50Praying Wood Green will find them the perfect match,
13:53Reverend Alex and wife Carrie.
13:56We met at Vicar School.
13:58Not many people say that.
14:00I feel a bit sick.
14:01It's a bit real now, isn't it?
14:03Yeah, yeah.
14:04I gave Carrie the most romantic proposal.
14:07I was actually ironing some cloths for Holy Communion.
14:10We still joke now that the laundry is where the best things happen.
14:17She nicks my clothes, you know.
14:19If you're going to be married to a woman,
14:20you're going to take your advantages where you can.
14:24Let's do it.
14:25I was.
14:29So, what sort of things would you like in a new pet?
14:33That slight cheeky personality.
14:37Not too prim and proper.
14:39Yes.
14:40I'd like a dog that would go to the pub.
14:42To church.
14:43The coffee shop and it's the social...
14:45Social time.
14:46The social time.
14:47The social time.
14:48And I want to be able to equally snuggle up on the sofa and chill.
14:52Yeah.
14:53Is this going to be your first venture into the dog world?
14:56Both of us have had dogs before, separately,
14:58and then we've had one dog together who we've recently lost, say.
15:03Aw.
15:04She was called Minnie.
15:05Do you mind if we ask what happened?
15:07It was a freak accident.
15:10She jumped and gave herself sort of the equivalent of like a whiplash injury
15:15and she was paralysed.
15:17Aw.
15:18How awful.
15:19It was very, very sudden.
15:21You couldn't replace Minnie, but we realised that we need a dog.
15:25Yeah.
15:26Yeah.
15:27Well, I think you've given us everything that we need to hopefully go and find you a dog.
15:33Sit tight.
15:34We'll go and have a look and we'll be back soon.
15:36OK.
15:37Thank you so much.
15:38See you soon.
15:39Say hello.
15:40Well, hello.
15:41You too.
15:42Hiya.
15:43Hiya.
15:44Hiya.
15:45Hiya.
15:46Hiya.
15:47Hiya.
15:48Hi, Nala.
15:49Mum and Dad's here.
15:50I'm Finn.
15:51Have you found a friend?
15:53Hiya.
15:54You're excited.
15:55She's very excited.
15:56I'm happy to see you.
15:57Are you going to play now?
15:59Good boy.
16:00It's OK.
16:02Oh, you're gaining a bit more confidence now.
16:03Oh, look at how he bounces as well.
16:04He kind of pounces, doesn't he?
16:05Oh.
16:06That might be a bit too much for her.
16:07You're getting a bit over the top now.
16:08Calm down.
16:09It's probably just all of the excitement and, yeah.
16:10What?
16:11What?
16:12Oh, oh.
16:13You need to learn any boundaries a little bit.
16:14It's like puppy going into adolescence is such a hard age, isn't it?
16:17He's got a bit too excited.
16:18It's a bit more confidence now.
16:19Oh, look at how he bounces as well.
16:20He kind of pounces, doesn't he?
16:21Oh, that might be a bit too much for her.
16:22Oh.
16:23Oh, that might be a bit too much for her.
16:24Oh.
16:25We're getting a bit over the top now.
16:26Calm down.
16:27It's probably just all of the excitement and, yeah.
16:30What?
16:31Oh, oh.
16:32You need to learn any boundaries a little bit.
16:35Oh.
16:36It's like puppy going into adolescence is such a hard age, isn't it?
16:39He's got a bit too excited, I think.
16:42Finn, do you want to get some toys out for Coconut and see if he'll play?
16:47Hello.
16:48Hello.
16:49Ready?
16:50Hey.
16:51Hello.
16:52Do you want to play?
16:57Oh, that's nice.
17:00Oh, my goodness, Coconut, have you made a friend?
17:05It's a doggy party.
17:08Oh.
17:09Oh.
17:10So cute.
17:11You're going to knock into that water.
17:12Wow.
17:13Yeah, wow.
17:14She put her foot in it.
17:15Coconut reminds me of Nala when she had a vision.
17:19She was very bouncy.
17:21Yeah.
17:22She was always doing things that she shouldn't have done.
17:24Yeah, I would say it's like watching a little one run round with their brother or sister.
17:29Oh, there's Nala.
17:30I don't doubt for a second he can be trained.
17:35They'd be lovely together once he is.
17:38Oh, Nala, where's your friend for Nala?
17:42The only thing I worry about is, is she up for the challenge?
17:46Ourself.
17:47Good boy.
17:48Good boy.
17:49Good boy.
17:51We have had a really good look through all of the dogs that we've got.
17:58Yeah.
17:59We have picked a Maltese cross.
18:01Oh.
18:02Oh.
18:03He is a social butterfly.
18:05And his name is Mushy.
18:07Mushy!
18:08He is a bit of a cheeky chappy.
18:13Oh, be careful what you wish for!
18:16Oh, I can't wait to meet him.
18:19Good boy!
18:20Yeah!
18:21So, Mushy is quite the character.
18:24He's got a lot of energy.
18:26He's very playful.
18:27Mushy, Mush.
18:28Come here.
18:29He definitely, definitely has a mischievous side to him.
18:33Mushy!
18:34He loves being chased.
18:37He sniffs absolutely everything.
18:40Every single blade of brass.
18:42So, unfortunately, Mushy's owner was made homeless.
18:48So, then he had to move into a temporary accommodation.
18:51So, they made the decision to bring him here.
18:53Give me your paw.
18:54Good boy!
18:55Yeah!
18:56Yeah, good boy.
18:59Once Mushy knows you, he's a really affectionate boy.
19:02But he doesn't always show the love instantly.
19:04And that might be why he's been here for seven weeks.
19:07And that's not good for a young dog.
19:09With Mushy's new family, I want him to show his affectionate side
19:12and actually go up and accept some fuss.
19:18He'll want a sniff, won't he, first?
19:19Yeah, he will.
19:20To get the idea of the land.
19:22Yeah.
19:23I mean, it used to take us hours to get anywhere with Minnie with a sniff.
19:29So, this is Minnie probably at her happiest in the middle of a game of ball.
19:34Her right ear was Frenchy and up and her left ear was shitsy.
19:39OK.
19:40OK.
19:41Right.
19:42We've got to be calm.
19:43With our children all being grown up and living away, when we had Minnie, it was like our version of family 24-7.
19:57That empty nest was kind of filled a little bit.
20:02Oh, I hope he likes us.
20:04Yeah.
20:05Yeah.
20:06I want him to feel loved.
20:08Right, you've got to be a good boy, OK?
20:11Show him your crazy side, but also show him your nice side.
20:14Here's some movement.
20:16There's something about to happen.
20:19We would never replace Minnie, but to rescue would be almost to do it for her and to honour
20:28her and give another dog the love that she'd given us, really.
20:33Come on, then.
20:35Here we go.
20:36Oh, gosh.
20:37Hello.
20:38Oh, my God.
20:39Hiya.
20:40I'm Georgia.
20:41This is Mushy.
20:42Hello.
20:43Hi, Georgia.
20:44I'm going to let him for the lead.
20:45I'll probably have a little sniff around.
20:46But, yeah, feel free to play with him.
20:47OK.
20:49OK.
20:50OK.
20:51He's going to have a good sniff first.
20:52What can you smell, Mushy?
20:53Oh, typical boy.
20:54He's definitely checking it all out, isn't he?
20:55Yeah.
20:56Yep.
20:57I'll just mark the fact that I'm here.
20:58I think we're going to have to pee-proof our house.
21:01He is definitely marking his territory, but it might also be a bit of a nervous behaviour,
21:07so weeing can release tension.
21:20He's got to get comfy first, hasn't he?
21:22Yeah, he's got to.
21:24He's got to do all these marking and all the sniffing.
21:29Oh, hello.
21:31Oh, I saw that.
21:33Oh, I saw that.
21:34Oh.
21:36That was still there
21:39It's one of the four F's isn't it you know if you're worried by something you can
21:43Fight flight and then one of them is fool around so he's just being a bit silly because he's scared
21:49He doesn't really know what to do all that anxiety
21:53Hello hello
21:56Come and see me hello. Oh, and we're off again
22:06Oh
22:07Yeah, he's quite good at entertaining yourself ideas. He's just living his life and having a great time
22:14Is he affectionate in her?
22:21Home is really different
22:23Without a dog. It's still like
22:29Mini would sit on my knee and just be with me. I miss that so much
22:34Mm-hmm
22:47Do we feel like a brave boy today? I think we do
22:51Stray Pomeranian Fox has been groomed deflead and is settling into life at wood green
22:57Day by day Fox has been growing in confidence and he is doing really well. Oh you cheeky boy
23:03Even this is so much progress with him
23:07Compared to the first day where he was even reluctant to come out the crate. It's so rewarding to see
23:12Come on then good boy
23:15Well done
23:17When you pick his lead up he actually gets really excited which is a complete 360 from when we first picked that lead up
23:22He would run away. He'd hide and he'd shake
23:25But now he actually really enjoys going for walks good boys go through here
23:30New things scare him quite a lot. This is probably because he's not really had much exposure to things
23:35What's that? Can you see a duck? Come tell him
23:40Foxy! What's this? You want to all hang out together? Come on then
23:46Good boy! You've got to be gentle
23:48But for now it's all about just building his confidence in the world
23:52Good boy, you're being so brave, aren't you?
23:56I want a big dog
24:03A big dog?
24:05No, I want a small dog
24:07Lucy, what are you?
24:09Small medium
24:11Small medium
24:13You're prepared, aren't you?
24:15Yeah
24:16This is Lucy's dog bag, isn't it?
24:20You've had this for probably about two years
24:23She's got poo bags with a poo bag holder and she's got a lead and a collar
24:28Can't leave a garden centre without coming out with something
24:31Yeah
24:32What breed, Harry?
24:33St. Bernard
24:34St. Bernard
24:35St. Bernard
24:36Lucy?
24:37No
24:38Pomeranian
24:39Pomeranian, yeah, that's more like it
24:4214-year-old Lucy has rallied the whole family in search of a four-legged friend to finally call her own
24:49How long have you brought your dog for? Has it been a long time?
24:51Yes
24:52What have you brought for your dog, Lucy?
24:54Stick
24:55Let's see
24:58How long have you had the stick for?
25:00Six
25:01Six days?
25:02No
25:03Six years
25:03Years
25:04Yeah
25:04Yeah
25:05It's actually true
25:08We were walking, weren't we, in the woods
25:10And Lucy saw a stick
25:13And said I want to keep it
25:16They get my dog
25:17Yeah
25:18So we've kept it, haven't we, safely
25:20Hopefully the new dog likes sticks
25:22It's like Cinderella and the Slipper
25:24It's the dog and the stick
25:26It's been a lot of planning
25:27We've been waiting for this moment, haven't we
25:30Shall we get you sat down?
25:31Yeah
25:31Yeah
25:32Get you comfy
25:33I'm so excited
25:35Thank you
25:40I think for us it's about the personality and temperament of the dog more than necessarily the breed
25:46Yes
25:47I want to put my baby in
25:49Oh wow, okay
25:50Small ideally, because where's it going to sleep?
25:53On my bed
25:55On Lucy's bed
25:56So what sort of personality would you like the dog to have?
25:59Calm
25:59Calm
26:00Cuddly
26:01Yeah
26:01Loving
26:02Very friendly
26:03Yeah
26:04Yeah
26:04Lucy's been in a bit of pain, haven't you?
26:08Yeah
26:09Recently
26:09And spent a lot of time in her bed and in her room
26:15Lucy has cerebral palsy and she's got dystonia, which is like a muscle spasm tightness
26:24For the last six months, Lucy has been in and out of hospital a lot
26:33Occasionally you've said, haven't you, I'm lonely and I'd like a dog
26:36Yeah
26:37The fact she has that feeling and knows what that feels like
26:41Yeah, that's not what you want
26:44No
26:46I think just companionship and friend
26:50Yeah
26:51Shadow
26:52Yeah
26:53Dad
26:54You're embarrassing me, Dad
26:56Oh, God
26:56I love it
26:57Dad
26:57We'll go and have a look and see what we can do, all right?
26:59Okay
27:00All right, thanks so much
27:01Bye
27:01Thank you
27:02Bye
27:02Bye
27:02Bye
27:03Yay
27:04Oh, my gosh
27:08Come on then
27:11Yes
27:12And he wants, yeah, he just, he's not sure
27:14He's not sure of us
27:16He's quite erratic with his behaviour
27:18He's just not settling
27:22He's just not sure who we are
27:28He wants to engage
27:29Yeah, yeah
27:30But he's just not sure who we are
27:34He wants to engage
27:38Yeah
27:39Yeah
27:40But he's just not sure who we are
27:43Yeah
27:43Okay, he's just not aware of this
27:44Oh
27:44What...
27:45Er...
27:46Mushy
27:47Mushy
27:49What's he going?
27:51What's his going?
27:52Where's he going?
27:52Where's he going?
27:53Where's he going?
27:53Where's he going?
27:54Easy
27:55Here
27:56Easy
27:57Easy
27:57Easy
27:58Quick
27:58Bring it back, bring it back
28:03With Alex's job, people look to you for guidance or for comfort.
28:11Yes, what's down here?
28:13That's a good boy.
28:15That's a good boy.
28:17She's very gentle and nurturing in her ways.
28:21That's it.
28:22Oh, you've got a very wet face.
28:24And she can relate to people.
28:27He's lying down.
28:29He's really good.
28:30Oh, good boy.
28:31Oh, she...
28:33You're really a good boy.
28:37Good boy.
28:39He's the good boy.
28:41Oh, that's what we wanted to see.
28:48Oh, my gosh, he's quite...
28:51No, she doesn't mind what he wants.
28:56They're seeing that cheeky side that we told them about.
29:00Yeah.
29:01He's really playful.
29:05Yeah.
29:06Come on.
29:07Can we get this?
29:08Oh, well done.
29:08Oh, well done.
29:11I really like his confidence and his independence.
29:15That's it.
29:16I believe that Minnie had a quiet word in his ear and said, yeah, go and live with these two.
29:24They're all right.
29:25Ah, the dog's for Lucy, she's 14 and she's absolutely desperate for a dog.
29:36So we have Poppy.
29:41She's nine.
29:42She's a Pomeranian, she is cuddly, she is chilled.
29:46She's used to sleeping on the owner's bed.
29:48I mean, Lucy loves Pomeranians.
29:53We do have a Pomeranian.
29:55Yeah.
29:56Wow.
29:56We have Fox.
29:57He's a little stray, very, very frightened when he came in.
30:02His confidence is coming on in leaps and bounds.
30:05He can be really affectionate once he's got to know you, but he won't do it on the first date.
30:10It's just how instant they want that dog that's going to curl up on the bed with her.
30:16Fox is Lucy's dream breed type.
30:20Doesn't fit perfectly behaviourally.
30:22Poppy isn't necessarily the type they're looking for, but is a much better fit behaviourally.
30:28I'm just not sure.
30:31We've narrowed it down to two possibilities.
30:35Okay.
30:35The first one is a little boy, and he's very sweet.
30:40What is it?
30:42Pomeranian.
30:42Oh, my gosh.
30:46Oh, my God.
30:48Now, Lucy, this little dog is called Fox.
30:53Fox?
30:54All right?
30:55But I want you to understand that Fox is a stray.
31:00Fox has been very nervous when he first came in to us.
31:04Okay.
31:05He has an affectionate side, but we don't know if he's ever lived in a house before.
31:10All right?
31:12And there's going to be a fair bit of work involved into integrating him with the whole family.
31:18Right.
31:19All right?
31:19Okay.
31:20So, it's not perfect perfect.
31:24I don't know.
31:27Look at her.
31:28I mean, sort of 100% perfect.
31:32For Lucy.
31:33Yeah.
31:34So, the other option is a little beagle.
31:38Okay.
31:39And her name is Poppy.
31:40Yeah.
31:41She would be an easier slot into the family.
31:44Yeah.
31:45She is not up for loads of exercise either, and you ain't getting her out if it's raining.
31:50Well, you're not getting Lucy out if it's raining.
31:52But we already know that she's really snuggly.
31:54She's used to sleeping on the bed and all of that kind of stuff.
31:57So, well, let's see how you get on.
32:00Let's see how Fox is when you meet him.
32:04Okay.
32:04Yeah.
32:04Okay.
32:05Happy?
32:06Happy.
32:06Well, clearly, yeah.
32:08Yeah.
32:11Oh, my God.
32:12OMG.
32:13OMG.
32:17Because he's called Fox, what colour do you think?
32:21Ginger.
32:22Yeah.
32:24Lucy was born at 25 weeks.
32:27We couldn't hold her, but she was...
32:30Tiny.
32:30Yeah, she'd fit in the palm of your hand.
32:32This is amazing.
32:34Are you bursting?
32:36Yeah.
32:37We didn't actually know that she had cerebral palsy, did we, at first?
32:42It was her annual review that they said that she's got cerebral palsy and it will affect
32:50her sort of lifelong...
32:53I do a big gulp.
32:55A big gulp?
32:56Don't be nervous.
32:58Oh, Lucy.
32:59Don't be nervous.
33:02Okay, let's go up here.
33:05Her cerebral palsy affects her, obviously, physically.
33:08Oh, my goodness.
33:13She's really lucky that she's got all the understanding and humour and emotions and all of that.
33:21But that obviously makes it tricky for her sometimes because she knows that she isn't the same.
33:29Here we are.
33:30She's quite independent in terms of she knows what she wants to do and what she doesn't want to do.
33:38If he's been a stray, then he might not know how to play.
33:43Oh, teacher.
33:44You're so kind.
33:46She wants to have moved out by the time she's, is it 26, she wants to get married and she wants to live with her boyfriend and then they'll both have a dog each and she wants to be a spy and save the world.
34:01What do you think he'd like?
34:02Salmon.
34:03Salmon and trout or what?
34:05Trout.
34:06Or these?
34:07Golden.
34:08What do you reckon that is?
34:09Chicken?
34:10Yes.
34:10She's sort of typically at that age where, yeah, you want that independence away from your parents, really.
34:16Having any type of independence is very different for Lucy.
34:21How long do you think we're going to wait?
34:24Nearly now.
34:25Maybe any moment, Lucy.
34:26Maybe now.
34:28Any moment now.
34:28Any moment now.
34:30Come on in.
34:31Good boy.
34:33Big day for you, Mr Fox, isn't it?
34:35Yeah.
34:37Just got to try and be as brave as you can.
34:40Stay calm.
34:44Deep breath.
34:45Deep breath.
34:46She'll feel really proud having her own dog.
34:51Yeah.
34:52You know, she'll feel grown up and she'll want to tell people, this is my dog, won't she?
34:57And that would feel like she's a bit more independent.
35:01Up you go.
35:02Come on.
35:04Come on, let's go.
35:07Oh, my God.
35:09Are you ready?
35:13Give me my name.
35:14Yes.
35:15Good boy.
35:16Hiya.
35:17Hiya.
35:17I'm Aya.
35:18And this is little Fox.
35:19Hello.
35:20Hello.
35:21Good boy.
35:22He might just sniff around for a minute.
35:24He can be quite shy to start with.
35:26Hello.
35:28Come on, then.
35:29I don't think she can quite believe that it's a Pomeranian that's walked in the door.
35:35Foxy.
35:36He's a worried little thing.
35:39Now, it does take him time to warm up and he can be a bit aloof.
35:43Poor little thing.
35:44Yeah.
35:44I know Lucy would really like a dog to sit on her lap, wouldn't she?
35:51What we're trying to do is go up here, up here, up here so you can see him.
35:55Lucy wants to see your little face.
35:59Good boy.
36:00Good boy.
36:00Good boy.
36:01Good boy.
36:02That's a great night.
36:03It's okay.
36:05Now, see if you can put the go up the next step.
36:08Fox.
36:08Fox.
36:09Fox.
36:10Foxy.
36:11Foxy.
36:12Foxy.
36:13Foxy.
36:14Can I hold him?
36:17We can't hold him yet, Lucy.
36:19No.
36:20I think he needs to...
36:21He needs to be...
36:22Trust.
36:23Yeah.
36:24Trust.
36:25Exactly.
36:26That takes time.
36:27Trust.
36:28That can take quite a long time.
36:32Fox.
36:33Before I look after you.
36:35Say hi, darling.
36:38Fox.
36:39Paul.
36:40Puppy.
36:42Play with me.
36:44Play with me.
36:48I just...
36:49I just want to be friends with him.
36:51Yeah.
36:52I know.
36:53Fox isn't obviously going to just come and curl up on your lap today, Lucy.
36:57Or maybe not even in a week.
36:59week. And he doesn't like being picked up. Okay. We'll see. Are you worried that he's
37:11not going to be friendly enough with you? Yeah. Yeah. You want to meet Poppy? Yeah.
37:16Okay. I think that's a good idea. Yeah? We'll just see. Yeah. All right then. I'll take
37:22this little man out. Bye, Fox. Sorry, Fox. He's not bad. No, you don't feel bad. Don't
37:29feel bad. Yeah. Maybe Poppy will be in soon. She won't go out in the rain. Just like
37:54you. Suits you. Very lucky day. Yeah. Lucy is a really positive person. There are obviously
38:06times when she just, yeah, and she asks why and says, why am I like this? I wish I wasn't
38:13in pain, which is heartbreaking. And you just wish you could take it away, but you can't,
38:19unfortunately. Come on in. Good girl. We want to do something that will make her happy,
38:28and Lucy having a dog will just give her a bit of joy. Yeah, and be her new best friend,
38:33effectively. Yeah. Oh, I heard something. Come on. Let's go. Oh, you're not going to do
38:40the steps, no? Come on. Oh, Poppy. Poppy. This is Poppy. Hello, Poppy. Come on. Do you feel
38:54comfortable with me leaving her here with you so you two can have a little chat and interaction
38:58together? Yeah. Come on, Poppy. Come here. Yeah. She looks so friendly. Oh, she does look
39:04friendly, doesn't she? Can we sit? I think she can sit. Poppy, sit. She's sitting. Can I hold
39:14her? Come on, you can climb up here, darling. Poppy, look. Poppy. Good girl. Yay. Here she is.
39:25That's lovely. That's so much better. Poppy, come. Hello, Poppy. Come on, Poppy. Come on. Come
39:35and sit on my lap. Oh, yes. I mean, she'll definitely curl up on your bed, won't she?
39:41Find a stick. She's held on to that stick for how long? Six years. We've not had the chat.
39:49Dogs and sticks don't go together. No. Three, two, one. Poppy. She's not interested in the
40:03stick. I'm not sure that she's really a stick kind of girl. That's OK. I don't want a stick.
40:16Get rid of it. OK. Get rid of it. She doesn't want it. We don't need it. No. Poppy. Come
40:24on, Poppy. Come on. Good girl. Go on, her, Willa. Come on, you. Come on to see Lucy. Come
40:31to see Lucy. This is Lucy, Poppy. Oh. She said hello to you. They love me. Poppy. Poppy. Poppy.
40:41Poppy. Poppy. She really wants to get... Yeah. ..onto Lucy. But she can't work out how
40:48to do it. Maybe there's another one. Look. Oh. So that she's in front of you.
40:54So sweet. Oh, I love it. Just building a bridge to Lucy. Poppy, up here. Up here. Come on. Come on.
41:09Come on. Good girl. Come on. Good girl. Come on. Now here. Good girl.
41:25Lucy, she acts as a bit of an inspiration, really. Good girl. To see a big smile on her face and
41:36her find a dog and a companion that is incredibly special. She deserves everything she can get
41:43out of life, really. I do.
41:49Lucy. I do love her.
41:52Poppy, I love you.
41:57You're a puppy dog for me, I guess. She's my dog.
42:01Yeah. They love her.
42:03Aww. I love Kit and she's not a ball, really.
42:07No. She talked to her.
42:09Love you, Poppy.
42:11I thought Coconut was adorable, but I don't think Nala was too sure.
42:31He wanted Nala to play, but she couldn't see what she was supposed to be playing with,
42:36and he couldn't quite grasp that.
42:39Yeah, we weren't sure if it was the right choice.
42:41But after spending more time with him...
42:45We took him home.
42:47Bolt! Nala!
42:50Hello.
42:51Yay!
42:53Hi.
42:54Hi, you too.
42:57We thought he looked like Bolt off the movie Bolt, and it kind of just stuck.
43:04From the moment we brought Bolt home, they got on so perfectly, they got in the car together.
43:11I think Nala knew he was a bit scared, so she put our paw over him, and that was it.
43:16They cuddled Nellie all the way home.
43:18Not too fast. Come on then.
43:20He's built her confidence no end.
43:23Go on then.
43:24Poppy!
43:25She's attempted the zoomies, and she hasn't done that for a long time.
43:30Bolt has brought out Nala's inner puppiness.
43:33You know, that sort of cheekiness and silliness that she had lost, it's just back again.
43:40And I think she's much happier now.
43:42It's just a little bundle of white fluff.
43:53So fluffy.
43:54Yeah.
43:55We were both pretty sure straight away that we would take Mushy home.
44:01When we first brought him home, he was very calm, and he was super gentle.
44:10And then in the second week, he didn't seem happy in our home.
44:18Every single small thing would make him really anxious.
44:23He started to become a little bit more aggressive.
44:26He bit me, but I was able to deal with that.
44:32But at the point where he became so unpredictable, it just felt untenable.
44:37Yeah.
44:38Unfortunately, I had to drive him back to Wood Green.
44:44Good boy.
44:45Fox was a lovely dog, but it didn't feel like there was really that connection between Fox and Lucy.
45:03Then to see Lucy and Poppy interact, they just seemed really comfortable around each other.
45:10And Lucy was adamant that we took Poppy home with us.
45:13Yeah.
45:14Poppy, come on.
45:15Where are the treats?
45:16In the bag.
45:17Oh, God.
45:18Oh, God.
45:19Oh, God.
45:20Oh, God.
45:21My gosh.
45:22She's demolished the whole bag.
45:25You're greedy.
45:26Very funny too.
45:28Poppy was officially named Poppy Stardust, and she's slotted in perfectly.
45:35Poppy's favourite spot is in Lucy's bed.
45:37Poppy.
45:38Yeah.
45:39The bond is lovely.
45:41Poppy, come on.
45:43The first few nights, Lucy said, I haven't slept because Poppy snores.
45:48And I said, oh, no, do you want her to be out of your room?
45:51And she said, no, I'll just get used to it.
45:55Lucy's happier, isn't she?
45:57A bit more content.
45:58Yeah.
45:59When Poppy's in her room, I have to give her a drink or something.
46:02And then she says, okay, you can go now.
46:05I don't need you.
46:06I've got my friend.
46:07Poppy, Stardust, and Lucy, they're happy together.
46:10Love you, Poppy.
46:11Love you, Poppy.
46:12Love you, Poppy.
46:14Bye, because you've been here.
46:15Bye.
46:16Bye.
46:17Bye, bye.
46:19Bye, love you.
46:20Bye.
46:22Bye.
46:25Bye.
46:27Bye.
46:33Bye.
46:37Bye.
